Aaron Glenn Press Conference (10/6) | New York Jets

Good morning. Uh when it comes to injuries, uh Kiko has a fra sprained foot. Um but he’ll be just fine. Um obviously we’re leaving today to head to London. So two guys that will actually be traveling that’ll be evaluated during the week is Kane and uh and JJ. Um, Michael Carter would not travel today, right? He’s still in concussion protocol. Um, so we’ll see how that goes. See if he’ll travel on another day to be with us, uh, to be able to play in the game. So, uh, those are the injuries that came up. Um, when it comes to the game, uh, really nothing changed from my thought process from yesterday. I mean, obviously disappointed in the loss. Um, obvious obviously disappointed in the fumble and the penalties that we’ve had. Um, again, the same thing happened the week before and there’s no magic wand uh that changes those things. The only thing that changes those things is what we emphasize, which we’ve always been emphasizing, and going back to work, right? That’s the only thing that changes those things. And you do that in practice. So, um, I know that is something that everyone’s talking about, but that is something that we are emphasizing. That’s something the players understand. And listen, no one’s feel worse than that fumbled than Breeze does. All right? And I have all the trust in the world in that player. Um, that player was having a hell of a game. Obviously, the game had to turn into something different because of the score. And we had Justin throw 46 times, which is something that we really don’t want to do because we want to make sure that um, we’re running it just as well as we’re passing it. Um, and that’s how we play football. That’s our brand of football. And I do know this, there were a lot of good things that I’m proud of that happened in that game. We just got to fix those things that cause you to lose games. And if you look across the league, I would say about 85% of the games that were lost, teams that are lost, lost the same fashion that we did, turnovers and penalties. So, we got to continue to look at and try to clean those up. Any questions? AJ, you just sort of touched on it. Your branded football, the way you want to play, what you guys have talked about since the spring. Yep. run the ball, playing good defense. Do you um do you need to start faster in these games? In other words, do you need to be playing with a lead rather than falling behind to in order to play the brand of football that you want to play? Yeah, you know what? I I think just in general, um in all three phases, we talk about being able to start fast. Um obviously, our offense did a really good job of driving down the field and we end up getting a field goal. We should have got seven on that, but we got a field goal, so we got points. Defensively, that’s what we got to make sure we end up stopping teams. um from scoring in that situation because I think the last couple of games we have given up a touchdown or field goal in that instance. So that’s something that that again is an emphasis of ours. Um but you’re absolutely right, right? Starting fast is something that we want to do and I think most teams want to do that anyway. Um but for us to play the way that we want to play, it’s important for us to be able to do that. And Dallas had uh three walk-in touchdowns. Usually that means there was a lack of hustle or maybe a missed assignment on the play. What was your take on those three? Uh, Mr. Simons on that. All right. And we have to get better at that. And that comes from um sometimes players want to do a little too much and their eyes can be in the wrong spot, but guys, just do your job and we’ll be just fine. And you see that on a number of games across the league, especially when you get down in that area. All right. So, uh, we got to do a better job of just doing our job and focusing on that and not trying to do too much because that’s what happens, right, when teams are moving the ball. Um, guys get a little nosy. Our guys want to do too much and um, and I just focus on what they have to do. On the picking, I just want a quick follow on that say again touchdowns. Said it was a busted coverage. So, which leads me to my question with these missed assignments. Do you think maybe Wils should simplify the defense a little bit just to, you know, get the players playing faster? Well, you’re just talking about like those plays. I mean, it’s like 62 plays or 70 some plays within a game. So, I’m not going to sit there and say that it was total issue because of four plays. Um, so I’m not going to go that route. You know, we talking about the other plays where everybody was in line and we just got to win all one ones, right? We got to win those one-on- ones in that situation. And I understand exactly what Sauce is talking about. And collectively, me myself, right, we all have to make sure we’re on the same page when it comes to that. We talked yesterday about, you know, you want to prevent them from feeling, okay, here we go again. Yep. H how do you address that with them? Because again, I know it’s a new year and a new staff, but a lot of these guys have been here and experienced this type of stuff, turnovers, penalties, you know, all that. Well, listen, for the last two years, I think the last two years, we um I think we led the league in penalties. And I’ve said that at the beginning, like you just don’t hit a wand and that changes, man. The work has to be able to fix those things. And that’s what practice is for. The same thing when it comes to to to turnovers and also taking the ball away. We have to work to get those things done. And nothing overcomes that. Nothing overcomes the work. And the thing is, I know for a fact our players have bought into what we’re doing. So that’s why I know it’s not a here we go again because every day we emphasize it. Every day we talk about we attack those things every day and the players attack them too, you know. So I have no um I am not worried about that part of the here we go game. If you guys heard the players talk and you guys see what their mindset is and they feel the same way that we do as coaches is there’s no such thing as that for us right now. We just got to continue to play uh to continue to work. We got to work. A there was a there was a moment in the first half where I think uh Justin Fields pass like hit the camera um like the sky cam or whatever. I believe there’s a rule that like they’re supposed to run the play again or something like that. Like do do you know why why that didn’t happen? I I have I have no idea that there are a number of things that that I question, but that’s just the way it goes. And listen, every coach is going to question certain calls that happen in the game. Um, and we try to get clarity on it, you know, as the week goes by by asking those questions and and trying to send those in. So, uh, we’ll see how that goes. Are you considering any personnel changes on defense? You know what, and I say this every week is you earn your keep. You earn your keep. So, I think everyone’s always we always looking at that like who gives us the best chance to win. that does that does not mean that we’re just having wholesale changes week in and week out, but I do expect us to earn the players to earn their keep during the week. You touched on this a little bit last night, but um with the pass rush, you know, basically getting only one sack and that was kind. Uh now that you had a chance to look at it more closely and you did blitz a lot, which you usually do, um why wasn’t getting home? Well, I don’t think we uh we blitzed a ton. Um the thing is, listen, the slide is going to Quinnon like danger every time and our other guys has to win their one-on- ones. That is something that I talked to a number of guys about last night and they understand that. And in this day and age, you see a lot of 12 personnel and they’re blocking. They’re keeping everybody in. And that’s one of the reasons why we had issues is they’re keeping every when you got a four-man rush, they’re keeping everybody in and they’re blocking this thing up and they have these twoman routes. So, we got to do a better job of making sure we understand how to make sure we cover those two-man routes for the most part. Aaron, why um why did you decide to go to London early in the week? Some teams go later in the week. And I believe you went with New Orleans, right? Uh assistant, have you ever done this trip other than that one? you know, I went as a player um in New Orleans and a coach in New Orleans and um and we always went early and I always felt that guys got acclimated, you know, a lot quicker when you go early. Um that’s something I just believe in, you know, so uh it’ll be a good trip for us. Again, we going there for one reason that’s going to win the game and I look forward to the work that we’re going to have this week. Aaron, you talked about how you spoke to Tony Dunie and Jimmy Johnson. Yep. Uh that’s you reaching out to them just for like advice or or what precipitated that? Well, both of those guys reached out to me. Um because again, I mean, they they’ve been here and they understand the noise that’s that’s going to come from, you know, all over the place, from the fans, um from the media, and they’re telling me cuz they they they see everyone in my press conference. They see what the players are saying, and they’re telling me, “Man, stay the course. You know, you know exactly what’s going on in that building. You know exactly what’s going on on that practice field.” And I appreciate that because they have, you know, been a part of what I’m going through um and what we’re going through for the most part. And and I believe exactly what they’re saying. And that’s something that we’re going to do. We’re going to stay the course. We’re not going to waver. We’re not going to let any of the outside noise starts, you know, to get us to, you know, have issues between each other. Listen, coaches and players, we’re on the same page. Trust me when I tell you that. And we’re going to continue to work our ass off until we get this thing fixed. Sometimes when a new regime comes in, it becomes very obvious to everyone that it’s a total rebuild. When you got in, and I recall that at the scouting combine, you said exactly, “We’re here to win.” Now, do you do you think having the benefit of some hindsight here, do you think maybe you underestimated the challenge that you were stepping into? What coach is not here to win now? I’m asking. Well, every coach is here to win. Now, what you didn’t say is what I said. I’m not thinking about the Super Bowl. I’m not thinking about playoffs. I’m thinking about building a foundation. That’s exactly what we’re doing. So, every coach in this NFL, I mean, that’s what you That’s what you’re here for is to win. So, I’m I’m not changing that at all. Yes, we are here to win now. We’re actually absolutely here. Have we done it yet? No, we haven’t. I understand that. We’re 0 and five and we own that. But I do know this. That’s not gonna stop us from doing everything we can to win. So, absolutely, we are here to win now like every other coach is. Aaron, if uh if I can ask about one coaching decision from yesterday. Yep. Um fourth and five. Fourth and five at the Cowboys 43. I think it might have been your second series. Uh you had to go up there 43. Fourth and five. You decided to punt. Just what what went into the decision to punt there? I want to play field position football at that point. I want to back them up, you know, put our defense on the field and see if we can stop and see if we can create field position. That was the only reason why. Thank you everyone. Appreciate it.

  1. I am a lifelong Jets fan, so this is being brutally honest. I do love AG's demeanor and I do think that he can get things fixed eventually, but…as things stand we are the worst team in the NFL and this regime isn't fixing anything this year from what I'm seeing. I'm hoping that having the #1 pick will get us our franchise QB and all of the help we are going to need in order to get this team to playoff level. Coach Salah won 4 games with arguably less talent. I don't see any way this team will get 2 wins, nonetheless 4 this year. Looks like we will be the laughingstock of the NFL, again.

  2. This around the league quotes is nonsense… we only team that’s 0-5…..around the league they figured how to win. And 2 why didn’t anyone ask about the stupid uniforms worn yesterday in 85 degree weather

  3. Darren Mougey has to flip this roster! They cut kick-off returners, but the defense sucks, Fields holds the ball way too long, and the only WR 1 they have is G. Wilson!

Draft Carson Beck and get him some playmakers!!

  4. Yo Ag is getting soft!!! The New York jets State of mind. Let’s talk about that third down defense!!! Let’s talk about running for 5 yards a carry and then passing in twice on 2nd on 3rd! This team is a joke and AG getting sucked right in! Everyday we talk about it! Man every Sunday yall suck! Change the conversation !

  5. The F issue is that nothing is working man u can say all we can do is go back to work shit is getting worse not better the defense is trash they obviously they gave up after the breece fumble thats brutal the coaching has been absolutely brutal on all phases expect special teams 0-6 coming this is worse than the Kotie era

  6. Lol AG sounds like he is coaching kids. These are grown ass men and they need to start treating them like grown men. The team looks like they are quitting on this coach already. AG seems way 2 positive for the play we are seeing

  7. This guy read his own headlines all offseason and got punched in the mouth. Close your eyes and he is saying all the same crap Saleh did. Hard to set a foundation now when 80% of the roster needs to be cut.

  8. No they did not lose like we did. We are not even competitive… other teams may have lost tough games. We just get humiliated and the turnovers just add to the humiliation

  9. I'm sorry if at least they were 2-3. I would say ok. Coach.. keep them going… But they are 0-5.. they should be at. Least. 6-7 points on the score board. Each quarter.. ant their is 4

  10. This coach has set a new standard for sucking in our illustrious history of horrific football. This will not turn around. Admit you hired a competent TERD and move forward. Zero accountability. Zero focus. Zero wins. The same old Jets would wipe the floor with this team. This coach sucks and the owner should accept responsibility for shopping at the dollar store and hire Mike McCarthy. You need a grownup to fix this mess. Step one is to identify the problem. AG is the problem. Feel free to hire me if you’re not happy with the results from the 33rd team. I’ll do it for a Garrett Wilson jersey and the sign for Aaron Glenn‘s parking spot.

  11. I can't stand his ignorance to admit that we aren't good. Look you can talk your players/OC/DC up all day but what the tape that he says he watches SHOWS WE AREN'T GOOD!!! He walked in and first media day he said "we're coming to compete and win this year' and now it's "this is gonna take time and work"…….Which is it?!?! I love GW, Sauce, Q, Breese but they aren't leaders…..Leaders grab players like Ray Lewis did and despite the mistakes lift others up and get others to play each and every down like it's their last. What we have and you can see it EVERY WEEK……As soon as we have a fumble the team quits, as soon as the other team scores 14 the team quits, etc…….I'm sorry I'm just tired of HC after HC saying "i gotta watch the tape", "we gotta go to work", "we're gonna get better"……It's been over 10 yrs and we haven't gotten any better!!!! We should've hired Rex
