Penalties and Mistakes PLAGUE Chiefs in Stunning Defeat

Kansas City finds a way to lose this game and move to two and three on the season today on Locked on Chief Live from the land of the three and the home of the Chiefs. This is the Locked on Chiefs podcast. Welcome back, Chief Kingdom. Thank you for making us your first listen of the day on the Lock on Podcast Network. Your team every single day. Uh so much to talk about when we get to this game. Matt Derek is with me today. We’re going to be talking about the offense and the defense playing uh pretty decent uh for the most part, but special teams problems a little bit later on. Turning points in this game, but we’re going to start looking at this game and and kind of breaking it down. I It really looked like a tale of it’s not even really two halves. It was almost really like the first quarter and a half maybe for the Chiefs versus the rest of the game. And it was sloppy the rest of the game. Yeah. you know, after the first couple of really the first three offensive drives, uh, the Chiefs got really, really weird after that. Um, once again, I mean, they were they were putting up a ton of yards. I mean, they put up almost 500 yards of offense, Chris, and they won the turnover battle. They you look at the box score and they absolutely dominated this game. I mean really the only thing you could really point to I mean are the probably the the three biggest things in this game I think you’d say the the thing that really flipped the field obviously the interception the pick six game changer that was the most significant moment of this game because that was a 14-point swing. Um certainly the the you’re going to count the penalties the penalties on the kickoff for person Bucker don’t get count getting it all the way out to the 40. So, you include that amongst the other penalty yardage that the Chiefs had tonight and that somewhat offsets a little bit of the the issues. But those three things in particular, you know, the the kickoff out of bounds, the penalties in general, and the pick six, I mean, those three plays were crucial to Jacksonville’s chances tonight. Yeah. And Jacksonville played a good game after the first couple of drives. They found a way. I mean, they were down 14-0 and then they came back and went up for 2114 and with the pick six Kansas City looked like they were getting ready to put a, you know, put it to another touchdown lead with, you know, 214 going the other direction and all of a sudden, uh, Pat Mahomes throws a pick six and it’s not something that you’re used to him to seeing him do. He was fooled and that’s really what that comes down to. He never saw the linebacker. He never saw Devin Lloyd in that space. And I’ll give credit where credit’s due. Taekquin Thornton made a heck of a play trying to catch him from behind uh and showed heart and showed what you want. And he showed that multiple times of the season. So, I’m loving what I’m seeing from him. He had a good game at different times, but it just was not enough. They couldn’t sustain anything in the second half. Uh you look at the first half, they scored two touchdowns on the first two drives. look like they’re going to be unstoppable all night long and then all of a sudden penalties start getting in the way. Yeah, it’s and once again, I mean, it was it was penalties all across the board. I mean, it was not only just a couple times special teams penalties hurting them in their own situations. I mean, it hurt them on field position on a couple of racing a couple of nice little returns by Bashard Smith. And I’ll be honest, I mean, I thought some of those were a little soft, like maybe there were some things that the Chiefs have been doing that Jacksonville may have just flagged to the officials because they wanted them watched for because you got, you know, three, four, I think, well, three significant, you know, either the double team penalties or holding penalties on the Chiefs on the returns. Those seemed a little bit abund abundant. Um, a lot of them called for just to be random luck. So, it feels a little bit like maybe that was an emphasis that the Jaguars had the officials looking for specifically because they were calling stuff that doesn’t normally get called, I thought, tonight in and some of those situations, especially like the double team that that Nico got called for. Um, he kind block kind of just ran into him. I don’t know it was really a double team block and even the two holds on Cochran. I mean, it kind of looked like both guys were kind of pulling each other to the ground. So, I don’t know. I mean, I I thought they were both a little soft on the first one specifically. Cochran’s guy was falling to the ground as Cochran was blocking him. I I mean, it wasn’t one of those things where he, you know, stopped his progression or anything. It was the guy was literally going to the ground and Cochran is still sitting there trying to block him and keep him out of the play. I didn’t like that call. I didn’t like the other one either, but uh it is what it is at this point. You look at what this is going to mean though for Kansas City. They moved to two and three on the season and they have a tough game coming up against the Detroit Lions on Sunday night and that’s the last game they they’ll play without Rashi Rice. Uh but so many things could have gone right for Kansas City. I mean you saw Bashard Smith get more involved in the offense. That was a positive. Uh you saw positives from Xavier Worthy. You saw Taekwon Thornton continue his evolution and do different things for this offense. Travis Kelce was more involved. the running game got going to a little bit uh besides just Patrick Mahomes. All those different things went right and yet you still couldn’t find a way to get a win in the win column. What was the thing that stood out to you the most in this game? Matt, I mean, you know, we set aside the penalties and and the backb breakaking plays and you know, let’s let’s just set the aside the the pick six we were talking about earlier over at Deon Lloyd. I mean, it’s just the to me the craziness about the penalt some of the penalties just absolutely bailing out the Jaguars tonight kind of explains everything. I mean, um their touchdown drive to end the first half. You know, you had the maybe again a soft pass interference penalty on, you know, call on Jaylen Watson. Um there was a lot of things that were pass interference on the second half that weren’t called that I thought were worse than that penalty on Jaylen Watson. And then you had the dropped interception that I mean Nick Bolton pretty much had until uh Drew Tranquil knocked it out of his hands and then Tranquil probably had a chance at it too and couldn’t couldn’t get it down. Um Brian Cook has an interception on the penalty that Jamari Connor draws. So again, you know that there were there were plays abundant for the Chiefs to be made. And I mean Andy Reed will, you know, probably say it was just by a hair, you know, just by that much that they lost this game. And and the reality of it is it is. I mean, this this was a game that you look at the box score and the Chiefs, they should have won this thing by double digits. And then you look at these individual plays and again, you know, a lot of games come down to maybe five plays that are 50/50 calls and they go which way they go to the the which way they go that both teams can sometimes decide it. And this was one of those games. All five went the Jaguars way. Trevor Lawrence makes what was probably the uh play of the game. falling down, getting stepped on, getting up, and still finding a way to get into the end zone. And they talked about it on the broadcast afterwards. If he doesn’t if he’s not able to get up and anybody touches him while he’s down, they’re rushing to get the ball off and it’s fourth down, so they can’t spike it and they have no timeouts left. That is pretty much the exact situation you want to put them in. And Kansas City’s defense couldn’t get it done. And part of that, I will say this, part of that, I think, was them being tired because the other part of this game was that they seem to be on the field a ton in this game. Uh, and I do think that that played into, you know, the pass rush. But the one thing that I think that really stuck out to me is I don’t remember seeing any cover zeros. I was expecting Spagnolo to start sending pressure late, uh, especially when things tightened up a little bit, and he never really went there. That kind of surprised me a little bit. Yeah, I’ll be interested to see what the what the blitz numbers were coming out of this game because it did feel like that, you know, the Chiefs brought some a couple of blitzes in the first half that were pretty effective. And it it just seemed like in the second half that they they you’re right. I mean, that they just pulled him off that they really weren’t going after Lawrence that much. Uh, you know, I think a little bit of it obviously was that, you know, Specs was trying to adjust a little bit to how much, uh, Trevor Lawrence was scrambling. So, he was using a little bit more of a spy there for a while. It wasn’t consistent. I mean, um, Trevor, to his credit, seemed to do a pretty good job of knowing when there was a spy there and when there wasn’t for him to take off and run. And you know, in that play you talked about where he he’s, you know, the the right guard steps on his foot and talks him to the ground, you mentioned that, hey, if he if he gets touched there, that might very well be the ball game. Uh Lawrence, even after the game said he was trying to just scramble to get the ball away so he could throw it out of bounds and lo and behold, he just finds some room and manages to get into the end zone. I mean, again, that’s that’s not even a 50-50 play. That’s a game a play that’s like a 991 play. That’s a play that should go the defense’s way every single time. But, you know, the Chiefs have we we’ve been down that road before. I mean, a lot of people were having an Andrew Luck flashbacks to 2013 because it was the same kind of deal. Well, it’s crazy because Kansas City had a lot of those plays go their way last year. Really kind of helped them winning all those one-score games. This year, it’s going the exact opposite way. The ball has bounced the other direction. Uh, and they’ve got to find a way to overcome it. When we get back, we’re going to talk about the turning points in this game and what that is going to mean for this Chief’s team as they move forward to the Lions. Right after this, this episode is brought to you by Price Picks. Every day we make decisions, but on Price Picks, being right can actually get you paid. Price picks. It’s good to be right. So much to talk about, Matt. Uh turning points in this game. We’ve kind of already touched on it a little bit. Uh but obviously the biggest one, the pick six. You miss Deon Lloyd. He’s sitting there at a situation where I I think at worst case scenario if you’re Patrick Mahomes you’re thinking okay it could be an incompletion there’s nobody around Juju other than Devin Lloyd because he didn’t see him dropping into coverage. Uh but goes for pick six and nobody is able to catch Deon Lloyd changes the game completely. Yeah I mean it really does. I mean at that point the Chiefs are getting ready to go up at 2114. It feels like at that point and that’s going to be a pretty insurmountable deficit. I mean, at that point, you didn’t really feel like that the the Jaguars offense had been consistent. I mean, they’d had that drive at the end of the first half that got them points, but they had to have some breaks to go their way to get that. Uh, but the Chiefs, it looked like they were finally starting to get some things done on the ground game. Mahomes looked like he was in charge. That drive in itself was a what, an 8-minute drive, 65 yards downfield. I mean, they were they went slow and steady, just absolutely milking the clock on that drive. and it looked like that was going to be it. So yeah, I mean for the you have a a point swing like that on that particular play. Uh I mean that was a gut punch. I mean it to me if anything I mean give the Chiefs a little bit of credit the fact that they were able to bounce back and and score to come off of that and tie the game back up because that was a gut punch on that 99 yard kick pick k pick k pick k pick k pick k pick k pick k pick k pick k pick kick return. Well, and it’s crazy because if we’re not talking about that play, the turnover that we’re talking about that changed this game was Nick Bolton’s punch out at the goal line of Trevor Lawrence. And that is a heads up play by Nick Bolton because I’m sure he’s watched film. I’m sure he’s watched Trevor Lawrence do it many times. He knew exactly what he was doing when he punched the ball out and it was clearly out before it crosses the goal line. But then Kansas City goes and scores on a 97 yardd drive to go up 14-0. And you think that’s the point where this game’s about to get out of hand and it completely just shifts and goes away after that. Jacksonville ends up holding up 21 straight. Yeah. And and again, I mean, you know, there wasn’t it wasn’t the only play. I mean, that that was a significant one, but there was a handful of plays on which that this game absolutely turned. And I mean that and that’s going to happen in close games any time, but every single one I mean you there was like we mentioned it there was a couple of plays on that that touchdown drive for Jacksonville that any point of which that the Chiefs could have gotten a stop twice on that drive and that ends that that that takes that puts the Chiefs in the wins column on this one. Uh you know take away any one of the penalties in this game each one of them it seemed like every single one of the I think 13 penalties that the Chiefs had in this game. It seemed like every single one of them was at an inopportune time. I mean, maybe the one that was slightly most insignificant was the last one, the five-yard penalty that they took for for taking backto-back penalties. But even that, you know, was kind of significant of the fact that all these turning points that we’re talking about for the most part, they were all mental breakdowns by the Chiefs. I mean, the one that was the potential turning point that was in their favor was the Nick Bolton play. uh stopping and and keeping Trevor Lawrence out of the end zone. Everything else, I mean, all these other moments that we’re talking about were, you know, whether it’s Chiefs penalties or it’s dropped interceptions, it’s, you know, the pick six, I mean, everything that we’re talking about, those are mental miscues that this team just beat itself tonight. The I will give Jacksonville one, and this is actually a little bit of a turning point for me, and it’s probably one that isn’t going to is going to fly under the radar, and people aren’t going to think about it and talk about it much. Uh coming out of Jacksonville scoring their first touchdown, uh Patrick Mahomes throws a little pop pass to Xavier Worthy and Josh Hines Allen hits him for a six-yd loss. Now, I don’t care about the six-yard loss. That’s not why it’s really a turning point for me, but it was a turning point because if you watch that play, if Worthy gets past Hines Allen, that’s probably a big gain and Kansas City’s off to another score at least before halftime and then they get the ball back coming after halftime. Uh, and great play by Josh Hines Allen. It not blocked. It was a design play where you’re not blocking the defensive end thinking that Worthy is going to get past him and he didn’t. And man, I it’s just crazy how it’s a game of inches and that one was just so close to busting open and being a huge play for Kansas City and they shut it down. It was a great play by Jacksonville. Yeah. And you know the ironic thing is that you know we were I was at least kind of talking about as the Chiefs were going to the half talking about the fact that hey the Chiefs had a chance to double dip. You they had got the ball back I think with 243 left in the at in the first half had a chance that they could go down and get some points. They were getting the ball at the beginning of the second half. They could get some points and you know that middle middle eight that coaches sometimes talk about and I mean I think it’s mostly college coaches they usually talk about the middle eight but last four minutes of the first half first four minutes of the second half I mean the Chiefs had a chance to own it by having that last possession and getting the first possession of the second half they didn’t score any points. Jacksonville on their and their final drive, their final one final drive that they scored on. They scored points in the final four minutes of the first half and they scored points on their first drive of the second half. I mean that was and would you talk about the middle eight? Jacksonville won the middle eight today. Yeah. And it was crazy because Kansas City after that worthy play, they end up punting the ball back to Jacksonville and you’re thinking Jacksonville could go down and score and then defense steps up and actually stops them from even getting a chance to be close to scoring. But the defense continued to show that they were able to go going to be able to be up to the challenge to an extent, but they were just on the field so much. They had, you know, play after play after play. And then you look at, you know, the pick six and the defense is not out there for that po portion and you’re thinking, okay, maybe they’re going to get some rest, maybe they’ll be able to get some pass rush. But they really just couldn’t get Trevor Lawrence down when it counted. And that’s what really hurt them. He continued to get out and make plays with his legs, which turned into turning points also just because of the fact that he was able to keep drives going that looked like should be dead in the water. Yeah, Lawrence ended up scrambling 10 times for 54 yards and a couple of touchdowns. Um not ideal certainly. And that’s I thought that you know I was I was kind of surprised that maybe that Spags didn’t go to a spy earlier just you know once he once he got a couple of those big runs off that maybe they went to it. and he did kind of go to it eventually with Leo Chanel, but then like I said, you know, Lawrence did a pretty good job of knowing when there was a spy and when there wasn’t and knowing when he could take off and when he couldn’t. And you know, those escapes for the most part were pretty critical. I mean, on both sides tonight, Mahomes had six carries for 60 yards. At least one of those was a designed run. Um Lawrence had maybe a designed run or two in there, too. But, you know, for your quarterbacks to be doing most of your damage on the ground tonight, I mean, once again, uh, Chiefs held at the end 12 carries, 49 yards. That’s that’s a that’s acceptable effort against an NFL starting running back. Defense, I mean, sort of did its job. On one hand, they gave up three touchdowns, but on the other side, you know, you look at the yards that they gave up and they just didn’t allow Jacksonville that much, but Jacksonville took advantage of their of short fields and their opportunities and the penalties. Well, and then the crazy thing is you talk about, you know, the the quarterbacks leading the the in the running game and you look at Kansas City and you have Kareem Hunt who ran for 33 yards, which I don’t know when the last time he ran for 30 yards was, but it’s been a very long time. You had Pekco that had a 16 yard run. Uh Hunt averaged seven yards per carry. Pacheco had 5.1. It’s not like they couldn’t run the ball. They were efficient and they did well when they were running it. They just didn’t stick with it. And but how do you how do you really feel bad about that when Patrick Mahomes is throwing for 318 yards and at least in the first half was pretty much hitting I think he had maybe two or three inter two or three incompletions in the first half. Uh he was playing very well. It just didn’t translate at the end of the game. Yeah. And the rough thing is is that you know you look at Pacheco and Hunt and yes two carries that they had for 49 yards. it was the other 14 carries for 36 yards that was a lot like they’ve looked the rest of the season. Um I was at least encouraged that Pacheco had a lot of touches that I felt like were his hardest runs of the year. And I mean a couple of those were even on receptions too. And I mean that was the closest that he’s looked to pre you know fibula fracture. But you start to continue to look at it and I mean that’s the thing is that Pacheco has has just not looked like the same running back since that injury. Um, I think his tops in rushing to tweet this out earlier tonight. I think his 55 yards I think he had, uh, top of 15 receiving. Uh, I think 60 yards is high for scrimmage in a game since coming back from the injury that’s end of last year, beginning of this year in the postseason last year, too. I mean, it’s going to be a long time now from that injury for Pacheco to still be cutting putting up those kind of yards. And and hey, is it some of it because he’s not getting a ton of touches? I mean, tonight, seven carries, you know, I think he had 10 touches altogether. Not a ton for what you consider a starting running back in this league. So, is it just that he doesn’t have the burst and the explosion that he used to have, or is he not getting enough work to get in rhythm? I’m I’m I’m sure that you can hear arguments on both sides of that. Yeah, and I would say that I think that there’s probably some issues with the amount of touches he’s getting if you look at it. Uh, seven carries on the night. Kareem Hunt had seven carries on the night. So you 14 carries between the two of those. Uh Bashard Smith only had one carry. So 15 carries between your running backs. Uh when you’re running what 20 uh 63 offensive plays. So probably need to run it a little bit more. Uh because you were running it decently. You weren’t running it great, but you were running decently enough. When we get back, we’re going to talk about the offense and the defense step up in this game. And I think that they put them in the position to win, but special teams caused a problem and in the end it cost them the game. Offenses and defense probably do enough to get this game and get this win, but special teams cost them. And we kind of talked about this earlier, but I do I do want to dive into it a little bit more. Uh Bucker on the night, other than the penalty, obviously that was a big one, but uh you know, four for four on extra points, didn’t have a chance to kick a field goal. U really kind of curious, they could have tried an extra long field goal at the end of the first half, decided not to do that. I wonder if if that had something to do with, you know, his miss earlier in one of the games earlier this season from a long distance. But on the night, you look at it, Bashard Smith has a huge touch or a huge return that gets called back because of a hold. You have another hold that cost them at the end of the game. And then you have, you know, the the double blocking or the, you know, two people blocking the same guy. Just too many penalties on the special teams side of the ball for this team to get a win. Yeah. And you know that that’s the thing. I mean it’s you look at this individually and you look at what the offense put up and you’re right Chris. I mean the offense did enough to win this game. You look at what the defense did and and there’s what they gave up the the Trevor Lawrence and I mean yardage, passing, rushing, everything. They they shut down by and large the run game. I mean the only thing that the Jacksonville really had was was Trevor Lawrence scrambling and his passing numbers were pretty pedestrian and they won the turnover battle. So you look at that and you think that that was enough to win the game. You could certainly argue that special teams alone cost cost the Chiefs this game. I mean they certainly cost them a yardage in specific spots, cost them field positions in a couple of crit critical moments. Um you know that was the one area that the Chiefs just didn’t seem to have a lot of trust in tonight and faith. I was kind of surprised because you mentioned it there were a couple of opportunities there where the Chiefs uh you know punted on the plus side of the field and you know one of them was understandable. I think the the second one you know was that fourth and nine that was going to be close to it um in the second half in the first half they had a fourth and two at the 46. Yeah I mean that’s borderline I mean you know it’s but Reed’s been going for it but the Chiefs have been going for I mean they’re probably I think at home he probably does go for that. I’m I’m thinking I’m I was still kind of surprised that they didn’t go for it tonight. Um especially just the way that they’ve been playing offensively. It felt like that was maybe the right time to go for it. I mean, trust your defense to get a stop if you need to. Um they punted. It wasn’t a bad punt by Arisa, but you know, if you’re punting from that situation, you’d like to get the ball inside the 10 and they got it like the 15 instead. So, wasn’t great ideal punt. uh low snap too may have may have contributed to it on that that play, but you know, two decisions where honestly I mean I I could have thought for the Chiefs going for it in either one. Um would have been long field goals. I mean, but that’s in Buter’s range and that’s why you pay him the big bucks. So, if you don’t trust him in those situations because he’s been struggling, I mean, I don’t know why you pay the big bucks. I mean, you’re you’re trusting that your kicker is going to be able to get himself out of it. Well, he’s not going to get himself out of it if you’re afraid to put him on the field. Yeah. And the crazy thing, I’m sitting here looking at the total at the final stats. Kansas City got 476 yards on offense. Uh didn’t allow a single sack in this game. I don’t even know. Like I know Mahomes got hit a couple of times, but I don’t even know that he was really under pressure very often in this game. I’m going to be really curious to see when I go back and look and see how much the pressure was. But Jacksonville just wasn’t really getting there and really affecting things. I I do think the offense played uh very quick to start the game and they were getting the ball out quick and and Mahomes knew where he was going with it early on and that changed a little bit in the second half. But 63 offensive plays um five for nine on third downs. So not horrible on third downs, but they never went for it on fourth downs. But the thing that sticks out, and you know, we’ve you’ve said this a couple times, 13 penalties on the Chiefs, four on the Jaguars, and you’re talking 13 penalties, 109 yards. Uh obviously the defensive pass interference, and and I’ll say this, the one on Tamari Connor in the end zone was defensive pass interference. No doubt in my mind on that. That was that was the right call. Uh but there was the what Hollywood Brown got hit before the ball got there on on another play. I don’t remember if that was the third or fourth quarter, but uh it goes uncalled. Uh there were several things that I think went uncalled in this game. Uh but you cannot have 13 penalties. And I I will say this, one of the things and I I kind of hate going here, but one of the things I was encouraged by the offensive line played a pretty pretty clean game. Yasua Matia had a hold, but no real false starts. And I’m sorry the Jawan Taylor’s penalty wasn’t on Jawan Taylor. So, uh, you know, he’ll get it on the on the stat sheet, but I thought they played pretty well that way. Yeah. And you know, once again, I mean, you circle back to the penalties, you had four on special teams. That’s just that’s just unreal. And again, I mean, Dave Tobun, for Dave Tobun in particular, I mean, that just doesn’t happen very often. and uh you know that that’s going to be something that he’s going to be ticked off about this week. And I mean and and right to be fair, I mean it’s absolutely worth questioning the discipline of the special teams unit and and if that was an issue today. Like I said, also, I mean, I do wonder if Jacksonville just saw something on film that they alerted officials to to watch out because you just don’t normally see those kind of particular calls piled up in a hurry like that against the team, especially, you know, like the double team and the hold and and that particular hold because it was the same player against the same player both times. I mean, it felt like that the Jaguars maybe knew something or saw something that they could take advantage of. And if that’s if that was the case, I mean, if it was just the flat out the Jaguars realizing that they could kind of draw some penalties from the Chiefs, I mean, kudos to them. And that goes back to your discipline if you’re putting yourself in that situation that you’re going to get called for those those flags and those tic-tac penalties. You can’t put yourself in those spots. Well, I think the craziest thing is I the entire season I’ve been worried about Buter kicking the ball out of bounds on his kickoffs because he seems to be kicking it to that corner every single time. and it’s usually within 10 yards of the sideline or you know what looks like 15 feet from the sideline and I’m sitting there going it’s gonna go out of bounds and then he finally kicks one out of bounds and it cost them at one of the roughest times in the of the season and generally speaking I wonder if they’re going to change the way that they approach the kickoffs from here on out because I don’t understand why you’re putting your your kicker in that position to begin with. Yeah, perspective for a little bit, but it’s just it’s a rough place. Yeah, there’s there’s no doubt that the Chiefs have been pretty aggressive a little bit in their placement of of the ball on on kickoffs. They haven’t been using the strategy that I think the Rams and a couple of other teams have where you’re they’re trying to kick line drives and get it on the ground. Um and though that’s been a pretty effective strategy. Um the Chiefs, I mean, have been for the most part like the top third of the league as far as starting field position for um the opposition. I mean, they’re doing a pretty good job. I mean, they’ve been keeping teams on average short of the 30, which is where you want them tonight. That wasn’t the case, you know, and and certainly that last one was was an issue, but this goes back even a little bit LA to last year, Chris, your to your point, um Budgers had a habit of of putting the ball in the same place on kickoffs, and other teams have noticed it. I mean, they’ve picked up on it. And so, I think you are seeing teams jumping a little bit. They’re kind of planning on where Bucker’s going to put those kicks. So, not only has have the Chiefs been on one side being aggressive as far as placement goes and trying to do that, but then they’ve also been predictable. So, teams, even though they’re being aggressive, teams are planning and strategizing for that. So, it’s something’s got to give. You’re right. I mean, you know, you can’t continue to play with fire because obviously tonight it bit you. If you’re going to be playing aggressive, you need to be getting better starting pos starting field position out of it. Yeah. And they’re going to have to figure something out in the kicking game. And whether or not they’re able to figure out that the penalties, we will see. Kansas City does have a quicker turnaround than normal because they play on Sunday Night Football against the Detroit Lions, which is going to be a huge game for them as they sit at two and three headed into the sixth game of the season. And I will say this, from what we’ve seen from the offense, from the first couple of weeks to what we’ve seen the past couple of weeks with the offense, I think you have have to feel pretty good about where this unit is going, where this unit can head. Uh, and it was funny because I saw Royals on the field a couple of times tonight and he was on the field, but he was doing the worthy motion. He wasn’t playing. He didn’t really do anything else. At some point, he’s going to get involved in the offense. So, I do think that this offense is going to continue to get better and Mahomes will continue to be better and the offensive line has been playing well. So, I think that will work in their favor. Matt, any closing thoughts? I think you kind of summed it up for me. I mean, you you put 28 points on the board offensively. You that’s enough to win most games. You really give up 24 points defensively. You got seven points that your offense put on the board for them. I mean, that’s usually enough to win defensively. So wasn’t uh necessarily you forced two turnovers that yeah it wasn’t necessarily the best performance from this defense we’ve seen better. It was still good enough to win. Offense was good enough to win. Special teams hurt them. Turnover the one big turnover hurt them. I mean this is this is a hard one to take because this the Chiefs should have won this game. So they let it get away from them. There is zero doubt about that. Question for me is going to be just is hey for the first five weeks of the season is this who the Chiefs are? Are they a 500ish team that’s going to end up in this spot the rest of the way and they’re going to be fighting for a playoff spot or is this just hey Jacksonville on a Monday night situation just a tough place to play? I don’t know that Jack Jaguars didn’t win this game the way that they they’ve been winning this year. So that’s that’s at least another one of these concerns to me that if you’re the Chiefs I don’t feel like Jacksonville won this game. You gave it away and if you’re Kansas City, you can’t do that anymore. Yeah, you absolutely lost this game if you’re Kansas City in my eyes. And I will say the one thing that I feel decent about going into this next game against Detroit is Kansas City’s offense continues to play better and I think that that’s going to pay off. I don’t see them continuing to have this many mistakes game in and game out. If they do, this season’s going to be over and they’re not they may not make the playoffs. I mean, that’s just the reality of of the way that they’re playing right now. I hate saying that. Uh, but if they continue making the mistakes that they’re making, they won’t make the playoffs. But I do think that they have what it’s going to take to get turnaround. And as long as they can get through this next game against Detroit healthy, I think that you’re going to see a completely different offense in the second half or in the the rest of the season. And let’s not forget Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs were 15-1 last year before they set Mahomes and the starters for the last game of the season. So, they have the ability to run some games off and I do think that the schedule will get a little bit easier in the second part of the season. There you go. That’s going to be it for us today. Thank you so much for listening. We really do appreciate it. Leave your comments. Let us know what you think and where this team is going to go. And we will be back to talk to you more tomorrow.

  1. There was a holding penalty on Brian Cook when Trevor Lawrence fell down. The clock would have stopped the jaguars would have had first down at like the one yard line

  2. Chiefs have no PASS RUSH without blitzing and nobody wants to say it but Chris Jones looks OLD. Chiefs need to make a trade soon for a dynamic pass rusher or their season might be in jeopardy

  3. Not only did Buttger’s out of bounds kickoff give Jax the ball on the 40, it ran zero time off the clock because of no return.

  4. Blame Patrick’s father! It’s all him and his side of the families fault. The stress and pressure they put on Patrick isn’t fair and it’s affecting his play

  5. Devin Lloyd baited Pat into that pick all the way. He faked the blitz and then pulled back to cover what he knew would be the hot route to JuJu to counter the blitz. Lloyd countered the counter and made a game changing play as a result

  6. We either trade for a pass rusher, or this season is over. It’s as simple as that. Jones is doubled and taken out of almost every play, while no one else can do anything. 56 was nowhere to be seen as usual, and any qb will pick apart 35 and 27 all day when given a clean pocket. This roster is incomplete, and it’s going to cost us a season in Mahome’s prime.

  7. Also, it seemed like almost everyone did something incredibly stupid to lose this game. Andy should’ve never called a running play at the 5 yard line when Hunt was unstoppable. Pat should’ve never thrown the ball in that situation because it was too risky and he payed dearly for it. The penalties were horrible due to coaching. Tranquil killed a turnover for reasons. Hollywood blew a great play call at the end. The D line not getting to Lawrence on the last jags td was a pathetic lack of effort, and Cochrane was ass, along with Butker’s ridiculous out of bounds kick. Just sloppy all around for almost everyone.

  8. Chiefs fans complaining about the refs when there was an obvious DPI on the Lawrence interception and a ridiculous flag that was picked up on a legit OPI for one of their touchdowns is peak Chiefs fandom.

  9. I was trying to think of what all went wrong since the game ended. All I can come up with is that they seem to have lost their moxie. Sloppiness in special teams, poor effort, bad penalties. Things HAVE to change for them to have any hopes of getting to another SB. I still believe in this team, but they need better leadership and accountability.

  10. The Kansas City Chiefs defense is not keeping their eyes on the football they lack the basic fundamentals of always watching the football and knowing where the footballs going the quarterback that fell down two times and went into the end zone like it was nothing if the defensive players were watching the football that man would not have went into the end zone and the Chiefs would have won the football game😢😢😢😢

  11. Thornton did a terrible job catching himšŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ he didn’t even try to tackle him. He swiped at the ball so what’s that gonna do when the ball goes out of bounds

  12. For my fellow Chiefs fans who are just not seeing the reality: we're only two wins better than the Jets who are 0-5. Let that sink in.

    Bottom line..

Reid, Spags and Nagy need to wake up and realize they are burning up a talented squad playing the same strategy they have played for the last 10 years.

Chiefs are the most studied team in the NFL and the league has our number. This play not to lose vs. play to win garbage is done. Reid's total failure to focus on the mid-game and concentrate on double-ups, smashing their opponent and not backing off when up a couple must happen.

The fans are sick of stressful 1 score wonder wins. Last night was such an obvious failure of coaching and play call philosophy.

Nope, no chance we win division now and low chance for post season.

  13. Why the Chiefs like to get cute in the redzone is beyond me. Hunt and Pacheco were heating up at that point. If you run the ball off tackle you have a better chance of scoring if you must th we ow it, use a big body TE or bigger Reciever to the back of the endzone. Why throw in traffic and risk the Russel Wilson/Pete Carroll moment.

  14. Chiefs made NO offensive adjustments to what the Jags did on D.
Giving up the long ball killed them.
Mahomes got played Big Time on the INT.
Lawrence falls on the final snap and still scores, embarrassing!

  15. Running back and Pass Rusher Chiefs needed bad, too many penalties Brain Cook and Watson get beat alot, cook never look for the ball alway playing man. smh

  16. How can you say every play went the Jaguars way? It was a back and forth game all night just admit that much. The Jags weren’t just divinely gifted a win, they earned it
