Cubs lose to the Brewers 3-1 in game five of the NLDDS on Saturday night. Quick intro really for me uh for this Cubs team getting eliminated tonight by the Brewers. It’s it’s dispiriting. I don’t think it’s a disgrace by any means, especially after being down 20, forcing a game five. Uh but there is there is a lot to review not only tonight but the next several weeks. Uh I think our first few years of doing the show we’ve been quicker to turn the page. I think with this team for better or worse uh we could spend more time with what happened and uh sometimes you do just lose and this defeat Sam completes the 2025 season for the Cubs. Yeah, there’s so there there’s so many ways to go. Um, you know, I I I I think I agree with you. I think in the offseason, and by the way, for people joining us right now, we don’t go away in the off season. In fact, we stay the exact same. So, um, if you want to unplug or, you know, we a lot of Brewers fans have been really complimentary of us. You want to join the show and and and and you know, talk some Cubs, please do. But um yeah, look, I mean, I got to tell you, Matt, I I we’re going to talk about the story of this team, and I’m I’m proud of this team. I think they showed a lot of grit. They showed a lot of fight. Um just not a good enough offensive group. Um, and for me, you know, I I I continue to repeat myself, and I’m not repeating myself to sometimes you have to I’m not repeating myself uh to, you know, to call out Kyle Tucker, but you go out and get a a superstar caliber player. So, you don’t have the same situation uh that that you’ve had basically the last two years, in the last three, four months. Uh it’s been the same situation offensively as it always has been. a lot of lows, a couple of highs, some home run balls, and um they just weren’t good enough offensively uh in a huge game. They got their one solo homer. Um you have key moments written down. I’ll just go to one. I’ll go to the the key moment. Uh it was the sixth inning. Oh, yeah. Huge. And the Cubs were down 2-1. They had two men on, nobody out. A 3-1 count. Ashby to Tucker. Tucker’s not really overwhelmed by lefties. Has great numbers against Ashby. gets a 3-1 pitch right down the middle, swings through it. Then you give credit to Ashby, made a great 3-2 pitch cuz uh Tucker still has the ability to control the zone even if he’s not connecting and he wouldn’t have swung at ball four and he Ashby made a perfect pitch on the corner. Sey hits a ball to left center field that I thought had a chance to get down. It didn’t. And then Hap strikes out looking and and seven, eight, nine were really quiet. You don’t get a lot of opportunities in these games like this. Look at Seattle, Toronto last night. They played till, you know, midnight because nobody could find a way to score. So, you know, you got to take advantage of your opportunities. The Cubs didn’t. And and Milwaukee didn’t do a whole lot either. They actually, you know, against their identity, uh, hit three solo home runs, but they were with two outs. And I’ll say the last thing, the last thing, and I’ll pass it back to you. I I can’t I can’t emphasize enough this Andrew Vaughn thing for them. I It’s annoying. Do you remember the day they got him? I don’t know if I remember to that level of detail, but I just know Savali complained y and and and and the Brewers found a trade partner in the socks who had demoted Vaughn what two weeks earlier, maybe not even. The the Cubs need to send Savali out in their own dugout. He cost him the season by complaining because sure when they got Vaughn that first game it was Yamamoto in Milwaukee. his first game, he had a three-run homer off Yamamo. Yeah, I don’t remember that specifically. And that was the start of the Brewers run overtaking the Cubs, which I think we learned that if this if this was home field for Wrigley, the Cubs win this series. And then I thought he had the two biggest home runs of this series. It’s just it’s baseball. He did. It’s baseball. And um credit him, credit the Brewers. The Cubs just did a lot of really really good things in this postseason. They went four and four, which isn’t surprising how they finished the year. Um, a lot of great stuff with the bullpen and defense, but just don’t have enough bat-to ball skills offensively in my opinion. Yeah, I’m not going to follow up on this, but I I Vaughn’s final line with the He was hitting like four something at one point. Yeah, he cooled off at the end, but the job was already done. Yeah, it’s crazy. Um, the sixth inning, Sam, that was the first time they even had a runner in scoring position. Yeah, they didn’t give themselves a chance to win. Yeah. Uh they only had five base runners the entire game. I believe that’s right. Stole a homer by Sea. As you mentioned, it was it was hard in the bottom of the first to to be trailing 10. I I’ll have to say that. Um again, it’s only it’s only a run. The Cubs ended up only scoring a run and say answered back, you know, 15 minutes later. Uh but but wasn’t wasn’t thrilled at the time. You know, Ray did go the two and two/3. Kitridge later allows the solo shot. Uh and and also Tucker had talk about chances for big moments, you know, he did bad again. Yeah. And as the tying run at the plate, he grounded out. Yeah. Same swing. Same same swing for three months pretty much. And uh man, I I the goal in my mind and it goes back to Tucker. The goal in my mind since the 13th of December, final four was the NLCS and if they did that then anything after was a bonus. Well, I agree with you. They they went down 20 in this series, forced a game five. It was against their rival. They played complete baseball in three and four. Yeah. And games three and four were memorable. Uh game four might be in the top 10 in Wrigley history. Am I overstating that? Uh I don’t I mean in in terms of the crowd and stuff, it was pretty special. Okay. Um but it’s still it’s still dispiriting. Um but you know they they as the theme of their their year and really their identity of what ended up being this team, they fought back. Uh you know, winning this series was was the goal. I was trying to convince myself yesterday and today that this game didn’t matter. I think that would be a little extreme. Yeah. Um but but they made it they they got close and and it’s not it’s not good enough to what the goal was from from uh 10 months ago when they made that trade, but uh what a series. Yeah, I think I think the thought is is that if they won this series, they kind of maxed out what was possible, especially with with with what was, you know, who they were missing pitching wise. Um, just I I you know, we’ll see what happens with Milwaukee and LA. I’m not going to count out Milwaukee. I have a lot of respect for them, but you know, with the with the guys that the Dodgers are running out there, you know, that’s crazy, man. It just didn’t seem, you know, that feasible, especially when it’s would be in LA. But, so you’re right. I mean, it ca it came down to this. And like I said, I I said on the show the other night, regardless of what happens tonight, I think this team earned some respect that it did not have coming into the playoffs. And I’ll be honest, I don’t think they even had it after beating San Diego. I think they earned that respect um by by getting the job done uh in games three and four against the Brewers, which we’ll talk about. They they went 4- one at home in the postseason and 0 and3 uh um on the road, you know. So, well, you you use the word proud in your first comments. Yeah, I I I I I am I think I I look back at this team positively because I don’t think they’re that good, right? So, when you don’t think they’re that good, you can’t sit here and scream about them getting beat in a game five. Um and and I think I think we need to talk more about more more about that and and and how this team’s going to be looked at. There’s so much stuff in the offseason, too. I mean, we’re we’re going to be this will be our first ever offseason where like day three, we don’t have to worry about rumors. We got an actual team to reflect on. I know. I know. And uh just a little little teaser for that for sure. Yeah. Like you said, five days a week and uh so much to unpack. 92 wins, first postseason appearance in a full year since 18. First postseason series win since uh 17. though expanded uh playoffs. All right, let’s keep this train moving along right after this brought to you by FanDuel. Yeah, we’ll be here five days a week. Uh there’s maybe a you know eight eightweek period, January, February when we’re three, four days a week, but otherwise uh we’re we’re a full boat every single week. All right. Uh it was a blank season. I I Sam I was thinking peculiar. Yeah. To fill in the blank, but I want to make my case for something else. Okay. The Cubs never won or lost more than five games in a row, which is a main reason. It was peculiar. It was just weird. They lost three or more in a row, only five times. They won three in a row, a league leading 15 times or more. uh league leading 48 and 25 in games following a loss which lines up from you know the last 20 seconds of of my claim here but this team did always fight back and I would go as far as to say they they stopped the bleeding and many times they did it quick uh and yes they went 33 and 31 over the final 64 there was a stretch in there or two where it felt tighter felt a little clunky multiple players offensively with cold streaks, a pitching staff that was up and down. Uh maybe some of that was overblown, maybe it was justified. And then you top it off, you have the wild card, you have the NLDS, what happened? And I think in the end, the way I’m filling in the blank is the 2025 Cubs had a had a hard fought season and they were fighters, man, the whole time. Yeah. I think, you know, not surprisingly, I think mine is a little longer. You know, I I would look back at this season initially and like like right right after they lost and my initial reaction would be it was a step in the right direction, but they got to figure out Milwaukee. Like it’s just that I just think Milwaukee ruined the season. And I’m not just saying that because they beat him in the DS. They ruined the season by by them winning 97 games. How many conversations did we have both on and off the air about, all right, like Sam, they’re still having a good season. Yeah, you’re right. I got to slow down. I got to stop watching Milwaukee. But at the end of the day, Milwaukee, if Milwaukee wins 91 games and this game is at Wrigley Field tonight, we’re we’re we’re talking about the Dodgers. You know, was this team good enough to win a World Series? I don’t think so. Um, but you know, with Horton healthy, with Steel healthy, and and and maybe a little bit more back- to- ball skills, I I do think they got a shot. But this Milwaukee team, and it’s not it’s not, let me be very clear, it’s not that these the teams have big gaps between each other. We just saw them. I believe now they finish the season nine and nine verse each other in 18 games. Yeah. But the organizations still do because the Cubs are working with 90 plus million dollars. You know, they should be able to field a team that is better than these guys and and it’s and that’s credit to Milwaukee, but you know, that’s why you go get they they don’t they’re not going to trade for a guy like Kyle Tucker. They don’t have a name like that on their team. It used to be Yelich. It’s not anymore. Um and and that just didn’t it didn’t do what it needed to do. And and I think that’s why I was so frustrated the second half. It wasn’t just as much as the Cubs were struggling, but I’m just watching this team and it’s like this is a problem and and I think they’re really close. I definitely don’t think the Cubs fear them. I definitely think the Cubs feel like they are as good as them, but they got to figure that out next year. With all due respect to St. Louis, with all due respect to Cincinnati, um I just I’m not into the whole well let’s have a Cinderella run at the Wildard. you gotta find a way to win this National League Central and make a statement. Um but but but like you said, I do think there’s a step forward. Um the the the pitching infrastructure, I thought this year really took some steps forward. You got you got seasons from Brad Keller that you never get. You the Cubs never get that castaway reliever and Theelbar, Pomerance, I know Pomerance gave up a run today. Palencia made some huge strides. I mean that was a really big step. We’re not going to have to waste a lot of time. um in late February next year panicking about the bullpen because I believe they showed us um what they could do there. Uh we know about Pete. I think there’s a lot of questions over at third base that we’ll get to maybe in some of my solo shows in the offseason. Um offensively that that just looks broken right now. Yeah, they might be pursuing someone for that spot. Yeah. Yeah. Nico her was sensational. PCA at times was electric. Kelly was good. Bush was great. And I gotta say this on camera live sea a Suzuki whatever happens to him you know because because you know maybe he gets traded in the offseason in a walk year he delivered man he delivered even even in that spot with two on one out. That was a really good swing of the bat and was really really close to making a difference in this series. Um he delivered when it mattered most. It’s always a roller coaster with him but my hats off to him. Um he had a really good series and a really good postseason when it mattered most and I did not think that was going to happen. Yeah. And I thought his last AB actually put a good swing on it too. He did. He did. Yeah. Just got under it a little bit. So need more bat-toball skills on this team. Move the baseball. Hit the ball to right field. Hit and run. Get a bunt down. You get some clutch hits. There’s not enough bat to ball skills. This team’s too much waiting. Waiting. Well, I’ll start doing some research at who they could get that fits that category because wouldn’t you say they have one of the best in baseball at that and her? Absolutely. He’s one of the best pure hitters in the game right now, right? Yeah, I think he is. Yeah, he is. They’re one more guy like if if they had a guy like that at third base, this lineup’s complete. All right. Well, I might have a couple names for you. Not today, though. Yeah, please. I’m not not today, but I have and maybe not maybe not Monday either. No, not till I think with this team reviewing this team. Yeah, like Thanksgiving. November. November. Not No, I think earlier than that, but yeah, but but you’re Yeah, you got the month right. Okay. Uh All right. Yeah. I like like usual, you know, you’re how you went through that was was great. I think using the word ruin is your personal choice. Yeah. I think over the course of 162, I just can’t get there. Yeah, that’s fair. Especially given their head-to-head record. That’s fair. You’re right. And every year now, they need to be a playoff team. Yeah, especially why Council’s still here, man. Well, why did they bring him in otherwise? Well, in 2027, in June, we might just have them all on the show at the same time. They’re not going to be doing anything. But well, that’s true. But that that next step of the ladder to surpass the Brewers, given the infrastructure in place up there, and given their losses, they won’t trade for Kyle Tucker. Sam, they’ve traded away Kyle Tucker. Corbin Burns, Josh her, Devin Williams. They lost Willie Adamus in free agency. They win. They win. And they win. It’s a great organization. Solving that next step is is is key. Boy, did Murphy manage a good game tonight. I will never be upset with a playoff appearance. But it’s it is crystal clear that despite a nine to9 head-to-head record that there is work to be done. There’s some meat left on that bone. the putt the putt on the green is just a bit to the left or the right or short whatever it is and how they’re going to do that every day an I’ll look in I’ll look into it but and we will you know throughout the throughout the winter time but uh especially when it comes time to target new players Uhhuh. But uh yeah, it’s uh still sitting here. Yeah, it’s tough. This a tough show. It’s it’s hard. It’s hard. Yeah, I mean it’s it was they played b real games for almost literally seven months. Yeah, you said it really well and and I want to say this, the Cubs are close to this. They’re starting to show some signs, particularly on the pitching side, I think. That’s right, Kate. in your uh sermon there. Kate Kate Horton, Sam Kate Horton might be the top of the rotation starter they’ve been looking for. Yeah, stay healthy. Um, no, 100%. And I mean, I I I think they’re really close on the pitching side. I think they got to get a little bit more creative, a little bit more flexible uh u offensively. Now, you could counter and say, “Well, what are you talking about, Sam? Game five, it came down to four home runs. They hit three, you hit one. That that was it. But to me, it really came down to two on, nobody out. You couldn’t put the ball in play. Yeah, it was the top of the sixth or do that. But listen, I got a really important question for you that I want to ask you after the break. All right. All right. Let’s do that coming up next. Also, little another small free agent teaser, Sam, because Keller, Pomearance, and Theelbar Yeah. are all free agents and I don’t know if the because really because of their age I don’t know in Keller’s VO at the end I’m not sure if we do see them again in Cubs uniforms we’re gonna have to wait and see no no my head starts I’m not ready for that all right Sam will pose a question to me right after this episode is brought to you by Monarch Money most people can’t name all their financial accounts or even what they’re worth whether it’s 401 1ks, properties, or investments. That way you don’t miss any of the great Cubs content we’ve got for you. Uh we still need to confirm this, but I I think we’ll be back next. I think that would be would it be Monday morning or Tuesday morning? I think we’ll be back next. Tuesday morning probably, right? Yeah, I think Tuesday morning. And uh you know we’ll very likely be in the pending breaking news. Yeah. Mornings for a long time. Yeah. Yep. Um All right, Sam, what’s your question? My question for you is from a Cubs perspective as a Cubs fan, right? A will you be rooting for anybody in the NLCS? And B, if so, who from a Cubs side of things? Well, I actually would want to start it off like this because from a baseball side of things, I do wonder if the Brewers beating the Dodgers for all that that would stand for would signal any shifts in the sport. Mhm. Whether that was style of play, spending or or something else. 100%. But as a Cubs fan, I will be rooting for the Dodgers. So, let me make a case. Let me just make a case against for for the Brewers here. Just a case because I’m not a big I made a small one there. Yeah. No, it was a great case. It’s a very fair case. I’m going to make first of all who But do they get past Otani, Snell, Yamamoto, and Glass? Now, it would be it first of all, and remember, they already are 6-0 against them uh this year. I mean, which is which is really weird, and I just feel like that might change. But, and by the way, that six and0 might have cost the Cubs the division and an NLSCS appearance, you know, if the the Dodgers just do what they’re supposed to do. But whatever. Um, and what if those was out of the All-Star break? Yep. In in Shioz Ravine. Um, here’s the case for the Brewers. All right. If the Brewers find a way to upset them, kind of shows the Cubs are right there. You you leave you leave the season going, “We took the best team in the league cuz they had the best record in the league. If they beat the Dodgers, I don’t really care what happens in the World Series. If you beat the this Dodgers team in seven games, you’re you should get a separate trophy. You’re the best team in the league.” Yeah. Um especially if you had the best record in the league, and you say to yourself, “Hey, you know what? It wasn’t just us.” and and and we took him to five games and are right there versus if the Dodgers do what a lot of people think the Dodgers are going to do which is take them out in five. It’s like first we got to solve the Brewers and then like what do you do against this team? You know what I mean? It it just makes more mountains because ultimately I think you were correct. The goal this year was to make a final four run to really start feeling playoff baseball. And you know what four and four against the Padres’s and Brewers is nothing to be embarrassed about. It’s nothing to to c it’s nothing to celebrate about, especially when all four of those games came at home, which is going to be another separate offseason uh uh conversation because I think the Cubs have to like if the Cubs can find a way to get home field in the playoffs, they’ll go that I mean Wrigley is I mean they are Yeah, but will people want to play here though? Exact right. No, I’m ser No, I’m not joking. No, I know. Offensively, my voice correct. Hitters. Yeah. Yeah, hitters. You know, pitchers should be lining up. They would want to play here. If you’re in a contract here, you just line up, pitch here, give a How do I get to the Cubs? Um, but I think um yeah, I just think I I think I’d feel better in the offseason starting the show going, “Hey, we took the the best team to five games versus, oh, we we’re in this battle with Milwaukee for who’s the best.” And it is a battle, by the way. It isn’t I don’t want to make it seem I don’t want to come out of here and be like, “The Brewers own the Cubs.” That’s not the case. They split 18 games this year. That just didn’t happen. A and we’re separated and we’re separated out by four or five games. It’s just that with the amount of money that they spend versus what we spend and it just doesn’t you know what I mean? It it’s just so frustrating that they’re still here with 92 wins. It it it should have been enough. It should have been enough to win a division. It should have been enough to to go play the Dodgers, who by the way only won 93. Um that was a big story. Yeah. Yeah. So, um, yeah, I don’t know. That’s my case. I’m I’m looking forward to that series just because it does have Cubs it does it does have Cubs ramifications. Um, just two teams in the AL that have gotten over the hump as well. Yeah, just to Yeah, that doesn’t do much for me. Uh, because I I’m I’m pretty, you know, I’m pretty hurt by this. So, you know, I usually take a little when the Cubs make the playoffs and lose, that’s usually a break for me. Like I didn’t watch much 2020 coverage. Yeah. the the Bears if the Bears are five and four going into that next Vikings game. That would be actually nice. Yeah, I I can’t go there. Um you know, Illinois lost by about 97 today uh to the Buckeyes. Did Iowa win? Yeah, today’s Saturday. Did Iowa win today? Well, they were up 170 after the first quarter. All right. Well, you were in Iowa. They won 37 to nothing over Wisconsin. Wow. Yeah. Yeah. Wisconsin. Well, at least one Wisconsin team struggling. Um but uh yeah, man. Look, it was um it was a really lot of storylines for this team. Yeah, it it was a really really from I’ll say from the Tucker trade on, one of the most interesting teams to talk about. The the PCA stuff in the first half I think was as big of a story as any in baseball. Um obviously he fell off. the Tucker thing will be a huge I’ll go as far as to say exhausting storyline in the offseason because we all know how it’s going to end. Uh but but all in between there’s a lot of good there and um I I I think my biggest takeaway from this team is I I really respect um their ability to get off the mat. You know, Matthew Boyd got off the mat uh after after game one. I if got a chance today, I think he would have got off the mat. Jameson Tyion got this team off the mat after they lost to the Padres’s and and pitched really well when when former Cub U Darvish couldn’t even make it through the first inning and that was a really good Padres’s team that they beat. They’re no slouches. Um that was a memorable moment by Yeah. Yeah. Um so, you know, to to me it just came down to just just putting the bat on the ball and in clutch situations and and not and not getting that big homer, but finding a way to get that big hit. If it was a homer, great. Um, and they just couldn’t do it. They haven’t been able to do it really to be honest with you since Ben Zers did it uh on a November night in 2016 consistently. Yeah. Yeah. That’s and that’s the that’s the road that’s the road ahead for for sure is the Andrew Vaughn part of this though. The Andrew Vaughn part of this though will make me lose sleep. It will cuz I mean I just looked up his numbers like 860 OPS in a Brewer uniform. Crazy man. and and that home run he hit today and the home run he hit off a show I think were were probably the outside of Haps’s three-run homer the two biggest homers of the series. Yeah. No, I think that’s clear. I think that’s clear to me. All right. Uh we’re just getting started really. This is only the start of uh what’s ahead here. I really think the rest of the month will be about 2025 and then after that we’ll be starting to turn uh the page. We’ll be back very likely Tuesday morning uh with more recap of the season. I think on Tuesday itself, Sam Jed Hoyer will speak. Um so that will be Hey Matt, can I just can I interrupt you for one sec? Yeah. Yeah. Uh when the Brewers took their uh uh their team photo, Yeah. they had a flag uh they flew the L with a flag on it. What What are your thoughts on that? Yeah, I think that’s um that’s that’s a disgrace by them. That’s a disgrace. I I think they should be ashamed of themselves. Okay. Well, they’re rubbing it in, right? Is that good naturatured rubbing or is it or is it more of a low brow? Yeah, I think I think I think it just kind of shows you the the the rivalry in the city. I think the Cubs win that they don’t you know you you just move on but to them you know it’s a big win and you know it is because it’s a they you know last year Yeah. Right. Right. was a really tough exit for them. I don’t subscribe much to that stuff. It’s never been I’ve never been a big like if you if I lose what am I gonna say. Right. Right. Yeah. And I I’m performing a little bit. It’s just kind of It’s a little tacky if they do. Yeah. No, it is it is it’s a bit tacky for sure. Especially Especially considering the fact they’re in 48 hours they got to play the Los Angeles Dodgers and they’re they’re worried about you know uh uh you know making fun of the Cubs. Right. Right. Yeah. Yeah. We’ll see. Uh, we’ll see what happens the rest of the postseason. At least it’s gone well for the Bears against the Packers lately and we’ll be here all off season long. 2. Brewers fan here. Just wanted to say you guys definitely overachieved this year. Either way, hell of a series. So definitely don't hang your heads. You've got a bright future. GoBrewCrew 💙💛🔥

  3. I understand the frustration, but we made it to game 5 of the NLDS; let's face it, we were never making it to the WS if we won this series

  4. There are 2 types of sports fans:
    1. Fans of the game and fans of their team
    2. Fans that just look to validate their shit-talk and superiority complex

I appreciate that you guys are the first type. The Brewers and Cubs have formed a really nice, passionate rivalry, and that's good for the game. Both fanbases are invested and care, and so long as we don't get into those toxic fans of the second variety, we should appreciate that rivalry.

Both teams showed a lot of character and played a tight series. There will come a time that Chicago is on top of it, but in the meantime the Brewers brand of baseball deserves their moment.

  5. Hello matt and sam, I am very disappointed in the outcome of tonight's game. This may be a question for later in the Off-season..But if the cubs don't resign Tucker, then who will be the big bat in the Lineup To anchor the team Offensively. I don't really have an answer for that question. I would really like to hear your answer In the coming weeks and months to come. Thank you. Great Show.

  6. The Brewers are a better ran organization than the Cubs. As a Cubs fan that hurts my heart. So damn tired of the Brewers and Packers (small market) beating our "large" market sports teams.

  7. Fire hoyer!! This guy is not gm material!! This Cubs team almost all of 2025 could not hit. They struckout so many times this season it may be a record. Replace the front office with some competent baseball minds and Cubs will roll until then forget it!!

  8. Brewers fan here. After the previous 2 games I was not hopeful about tonight's game. I know we're "bitter" rivals, but I'm sending out goodwill to all of Cubs nation. Anyone who makes it to the post season deserves to be there, and you certainly deserved to be there. 2026 is right around the corner and we'll be meeting again before we know it. Congratulations Cubs fans on a great season.

  9. LOB / Cubs had to be #1 in that category. for playoffs. Happ,Tucker,Swanson, PCA 0-14 / final game. Milw swept dodgers twice this year.

  10. Brewers fan here. Have been following you two since around the ASG when the division race got tight. It’s crazy how much I’ve grown to enjoy this show and like you guys along the way..you do a phenomenal job. Cubs fans are lucky to have you guys as a voice!
