Picking Minnesota Vikings wins after the bye week

Vikings by week. There is no game. There is nothing to talk about on Purple Daily. Oh, hold on a second. There’s plenty to talk about. So, Declan is not in every show, but he is in. He was in on Friday, he’s in on Mondays, he’s in on Sundays. That’s right. He’s still working the key days. Uh and we today we are going to take a another crack at predicting the Viking schedule because as we’ll get to, so much has changed, not only with the Vikings, but also with their opponents. All right, Dex, we are going to uh and we’ve done this I think two or three times, but here’s the thing. Yep. If you remember in May when the schedule came out, we all said, I think at the time we all said, “Well, first five games, the Vikings better be four- one because they got a gauntlet coming up. They got a killer.” It goes Philadelphia on October 19th, a week from today. Thursday night, short week against the Chargers in Los Angeles, followed by a game at Detroit, and then finally a game against Lamar Jackson and the always, always so tough Baltimore Ravens. Well, guess what? A lot has changed with the Vikings. A lot has changed with their opponents. So, I think it’s appropo with the Vikings at three and two. Maybe not as big a disaster as we thought that would be to pick the schedule again. Let’s do it. So, even though there is no Phil Mackey, that does not mean Phil Mackey ignored the assignment. Phil has sent me his picks game by game, which we’re also about to do here. Okay. On on the schedule. Um, I believe I in both times picking the Viking schedule, the one you said in May and then again, I think we did it at the fair. I don’t know when we did it again. I think it was sometime before the season started. Sounds right. Definitely before the season. Uh, I picked them to go 12 and five in both iterations. Let’s see if that changes. See if I can still match the seven and 12 and five final record. I think I originally was at like nine wins or something pretty low and then I upped it to like 11. I think the last one I think I I had them 11 and six in my last predictions. Okay. All right. So, we’ll go game by game here. Um, so week six by we’ll go to week seven against the Eagles. Jud, we’ll go to you, then I’ll give mine, and then I’ll read Phil’s. Uh, we’ll go that and we’ll go all the way down the list. So, at Philly, Jud, out of the buy, the Minnesota Vikings will blank. Okay. So, that game is here and the Vikings will win that game. Okay. Philadelphia is a short-term mess now. A year ago, they were 4-2 and then I think they did not lose again through the Super Bowl. So, but it’s a home game. The Vikings have a lot to clean up. We don’t know who’s going to start at quarterback. This is not an easy game, but this is a game that if the Vikings get their act together, um especially if they get the penalties cleaned up, which they did a little bit against Cleveland, but even more, the run game, if they can stop the run game, Philadelphia’s passing game is a mess. And let me give you the one big difference I think exists between the 2020 for Eagles and the 2025 Eagles offensive coordinator. Your guy Kell Moore was really good. and Kell Moore. So, when the Eagles were scuffling, okay, they got things fixed. They now have because again, if you have success, you lose your coordinators. They now have a new OC under fire. The offense has not been clicking. The pass game has been a mess. So, I’m going to go with a win here for based largely on the fact that it’s a home game. If this was in Philly, I wouldn’t pick the Vikings, but I’m picking the Vikings. Yeah, Philly looks a little vulnerable here. It does kind of feel like if the Eagles are going to get right, it does feel maybe against the Vikings, but their offense doesn’t look great. Um they they hey, credit to them. They they’ve won a lot of games. Um I think we always overreact to their dysfunction cuz it’s Philadelphia, but I have this as a win, too. I have this as a W. Uh coming out of the buy, we’ll see if it’s JJ. We’ll see if it’s Carson Wentz, but I have it as a win most likely regardless of the quarterback. So, win for the Vikings. Uh Phil has this also as a W for the Vikings. So, all of us unanimously kiss a death picking the Vikings to beat the uh the Eagles. Next week, short week, Thursday Night Football at the Charges. Jud, what say you? I have this as a loss. short week. I mean, it’s both teams have a short week, right? So, that doesn’t make a huge difference, but it’s on the road. I think if you if you do beat Philadelphia, I think it’s going to be pretty emotional, high, strong, physical game. So, you know, I don’t expect you to smoke the Eagles. Um, and because you have to travel and it’s Harbaugh who’s very good and and the Chargers are weird. I mean, the Chargers, this league again is reminding us, and this is this is not new, how weird it can be week to week. Jaden Daniels and the Commanders go in there uh what, this past Sunday now or a week ago now, and beat the Chargers. But I’m going to go with this is a Vikings loss. Yeah, I have. So, I think in both iterations, I had this as a win because I I don’t believe in the frauders, uh, as I’ve been calling them all off season. Um, now they have some injuries here. They’ve definitely This is more getable than even I probably gave it credit for. But here’s where I have this as a loss, too. I align with you. So, the Chargers will be in Miami playing a bad Dolphins team this week today on on October uh October 12th. They are then home for the next three weeks essentially. like they’ll they’ll travel in November to play the Titans, but they’ll play they’ll host the Colts on October 19th, so they’re already at home and then they stay at home to host the Chargers. Rest advantage, man. Rest advantage in the NFL is huge. The Chargers aren’t traveling and going in different time zones. They’re staying in their own beds. The environment of SoFi Stadium, not as intimidating and not as big of a hole as like other places to play. Yeah. In fact, let’s be honest, there’s probably a a a good chance that it might be more purple than Chargers fans, right? But still traveling uh short week. I think I have this as as a loss as well. Phil has this as a W. So Phil has this as a win on his schedule. So you and I say loss, Phil says win. Um week nine at Detroit. So, so the so the regression that the two of us expected from the Lions has not come despite the fact they were terrible in week one against the Packers, which is now very odd. But anyway, it is what it is, as they like to say, this is a loss for the Vikings. I until, you know, Kevin Oonnell, I don’t think he’s beaten Detroit since his first year here. Yeah, I think in his career. Yeah. Until I start to see it, I’m not going to believe it. I don’t care if it’s Darnold, Joe Montana, or JJ McCarthy, a quarterback for the Vikings. So, second second consecutive loss on the road. The Lions win. Okay. Uh I have this as a loss as well to to your point. I until proven otherwise, which I thought the demise of the Detroit Lions would be taking place in front of my eyes this year after week one. I started climbing that mountain. Um Detroit looks pretty damn good. And it’s in Detroit, too. Um, I know the Vikings will wrap up uh at at home in week 17 against Detroit, but for right now, I also have this as a loss. And in Phil Mackey’s schedule, he also has has this as a loss. So, all of us saying loss in Detroit. Uh, week 10 against the Ravens. Is this Lamar Jackson or is this someone else? But regardless, Jud, little little tricky to pick. How do you have this one shaking out for the Vikings? I have this as a Vikings win. I don’t know this now a if I’m not mistaken last season the Baltimore defense was playing poorly and they got it fixed. I don’t know you’re fixing this thing. Baltimore just looks terrible. It look it looks like and you know been wrong before be wrong again but it’s looking like more and more one of those seasons in Baltimore um they have been just really really bad. So I’m going with a Vikings win here after two consecutive losses. Uh I have this as a win too. If if this is Lamar, I do think it’s probably more of a pick them and more of a a closer situation. To your point, the defense in Baltimore is terrible. They’re allowing 30 plus every single game. Um, so the fact the Vikings go back home here, they’ve lost two out of three out of the buy. I think they do get right against Baltimore. It’s a win for me and for Phil, it’s a loss. It’s a loss for Phil Mackey on his So, he’s got the Vikings. Mhm. Yeah, I think he thinks losing back to back. I think he thinks Lamar’s going to come in and l them up, which I mean I guess he could. I just B, it just feels like one of those years in Baltimore. Uh, next week home against the Bears, Jud, what do you have for this one? I’m going to go with a win. I’m going to go with a win. Bears here now. They, you know, they probably didn’t, well, I shouldn’t say that. They didn’t deserve to win for three quarters on opening night in Chicago, but McCarthy balled out in the fourth quarter. Um, but I think when you’re playing in your home stadium against the Bears, no matter where the Bears are, it should be pretty or are in as far as their build goes, it should be a pretty even rostered game, if not advantage Vikings. So, because the game is here, I’m going to swing it towards the Vikings and say it’s a win for the Vikings. I do, too. I know the Bears have um figured some stuff out here, which is good. Good for the Bears. We’re happy for you. Uh, but I I like the Vikings chances back at home still. Caleb Williams hasn’t proven he can really beat the Vikings. So, win for me when Vikings have now won backto back. Uh Phil also has this as a W in his schedule. Okay. Vikings now hit the road. Okay. Back-to-back road games. In fact, four out of the next five are road games. I believe week 12 in Green Bay, Jud. And right now, I’m at six and four. I don’t know where where I think uh quick math. You’re going to make me do math here. Really? Don’t. That’s why I’m writing down my my records. Six and four. Six and four for me. Phil and Phil’s about the same, I think. Um, all right. At Packers, this is a loss. This is a loss. Now, who knows? JJ McCarthy could be playing well by now. Carson Wentz could be an MVP consideration by now. You know, week 12, week 12 compared to where we are currently is 100 years away in NFL years, but I’m going with a Packers win at Lambeau Field. Yeah, agreed. I’m I’m with you there, too. I uh Packers, even though they’ve slipped up a little bit after a hot start, maybe not as dominant as we thought. Winning in Green Bay is tough. Um weatherwise, it will probably be cooler. I don’t think it’ll be dire, but probably obviously a little cooler outdoor game. Love the vibes there in Green Bay uh for an outdoor game. However, I do think it’s a loss for the Vikings. So, L for me, L for Jud, and an L for Phil. Jud als Phil also has this as a loss. Okay, for the Vikings, uh week 13 at the Seahawks, Jud, I have this as a win for the Vikings. They they know Darnold’s uh uh faults. They know what buttons to press. They know what he does well and what he doesn’t do do well. Um, you know, it’s funny. It sort of got glossed past a little bit, I thought, but as great as the shootout against Tampa Bay was last Sunday, you notice Darnold did a key pick towards the end of that game. Um, so I’m going to go with a Vikings win. I’m sure Phil is going with a Seahawks win, but um I am not I am not as convinced that the Vikings cannot go in. Now with Zimmer, they would always lose it felt like in Seattle, but with Okonnell, they won last year. I think they repeat that this year with Darnold on the other side. I have this as a loss. Excuse me as I unmute my microphone. Um very Judlike. It is very Judlike. I have this as a loss. I think Seattle’s a better football team now. This is like two months from now, so things change. But right now, if they go into Seattle, I think the Seahawks beat them nine out of ten times, quote quote the Herb Brooks line. Uh but not this game. Not tonight, but in the other way. Uh so I I think Seattle’s just a better team. So I have this as a loss. Phil also has this as a loss, excuse me, on his uh Viking schedule. Uh week 14 after back-to-back road games, Vikings do return home against the Commanders. How do you have this one shaking out, Jud? Uh, Vikings lost. Vikings lost. They’re feeling good about beating Seattle. Jaden Daniels is very good. Uh, the Commanders are weird because, you know, Jaden missed what, a couple of games and they didn’t play well. Well, of course they didn’t. Jaden Daniels didn’t play. Um, I think the Commanders are a tough team. So, I think the the up and down nature of this league, hey, we went to in in my world, we went to Seattle and we won, is offset by a loss at home to the Commanders. So, right now, I am at seven and six, by the way. Okay. Okay. Uh, I have this as a win. Um, Commanders have figured some stuff out here. Jaden Daniels, assuming he’s healthy, obviously a dangerous team. Dan Quinn, a lot better coach than maybe we thought he was going to be when he took this job in Washington. Um, but I do have this as a win. You played back-to-back games on the road. You come back home here. Uh, I have this as a W. Phil also has this as a W in his schedule. Um, week 15 now in Dallas. Jerry World at the Cowboys. Jud, I have Well, this is a little bit tougher because Dak’s playing well now. Again, it’s a long ways away. Um, back-to-back games NFC East a little bit dicey. I think people are probably assuming it’s going to be easy. I don’t know that’s the case. I have this as a win though. I have the Vikings winning at Dallas to go to eight and six. Okay. I have this as a win too. Um I think going 2 and 0. I think these weeks 15 and 16 on the road are probably going to determine how you feel about going into your playoff odds here because you’re going to close at home obviously against Detroit and Green Bay which is great. I think if the Vikings are going to have any shot without having to play for their lives, I think you have to win both of these games at Detroit at New York. I think that’s a tall task. I guess stay tuned to see how this shakes out for me. For now though, I do have the Vikings winning this game in Dallas. Phil also has this um as a win in his schedule. Staying on the road. Week 16, Christmas Day. Glorious Christmas Day. 300 p.m. game. Get to get out of all your family obligations. Wait, no, never mind. Uh Jud sitting on the couch regardless. Holidays wait for no one. Uh football waits for no one on holidays, as Jud has always said. Yep. Uh so at New York, Jud, how do you have this one shake? Wait, this is the Detroit game is Christmas. Oh, Detroit’s Christmas. I’m sorry. I So this is the week before Christmas. Your holiday shopping in Manhattan. Yeah. Um, and then and then you go to gorgeous Jersey to watch the Giants and Vikings. All right. So, how’s Jackson Dart playing by by this point? Are the Giants was the win against the Eagles their Super Bowl? Was that a popup? Um, I have not sold enough. Like the the ballsy call, the old 1500 ESPN, the ballsy call would be like they’re going to lose to the Giants. Can you believe it? Um, but I’m not going to go there. I’m gonna go that this is a win to take him to to nine and six for the Vikings. I have this as a loss. I have this as a win every single time uh in the schedule I have picked it. I have this as a loss. I I think uh Jackson Dart has given them a different type of Moxy and Edge. And I think playing in New Jersey in late December is less than ideal. So maybe trap game vibes, but regardless, I have this as a loss. I think they’re going to lose one of these two games. Yeah. And I think and and I I think it’s going to be more in the outdoor world in Meadowlands. Uh so I have this as a loss I believe heading in. Oh, and Phil, by the way, sorry, Phil on this has this as a win. So in in Phil’s schedule, they have won three in a row. Win against Commanders, Cowboys, and Giants. Um right now, as I tally this, Jud, give me a minute here. I got to do math. Four, five, six, seven. I have met eight wins. One, two. Sunny’s crying. One, two, three, four, five. Uh, eight and seven. Yep. Eight and seven for me in the heading into the last two games of the season. And what’s Phil? Can you tell? See here. Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. Nine and six. Okay. So, we’re both So, Phil and I are nine and six. You’re eight and seven. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Week 17. Vikings are home for the rest of the way. Their road schedule is regular season road schedule is complete, I should say. Uh, so they’re home. This is indeed the Christmas day. I believe it’s already a white out. I think they already announced that it’s going to be a white out. Yep. I think they’re going to wear white helmets, right? As well. Yep. Yep. Uh, so versus the Lions. What do we have here, Jud? How How does this one going to shake, baby? Loss. Loss. Now, what if the Lions have come back down to earth though and and they are fulfilling the Balln knowowers the Balln knowowers predictions and they are playing well. But uh as of right now with the way things are shaking out and that’s that’s all we can judge on right now uh because it’s difficult. I’m going to go with this is a loss to the Lions. So I’ve got them now at nine and seven. Yeah, I have this as a loss too. Um, I think that I just Detroit’s the better team. Again, even though you’re at home, I think Detroit’s just the better team. So, the these two games also are going to be integral in terms of the playoffs. Detroit maybe even clinches the division with the win here again, which they did right last year, I think. Yep. Um, Minnesota. Yeah. So, I have this as a loss as well. Phil has this as a loss, too. All three of us saying loss. So heading into the last week 18 here versus the Packers. Could be a Saturday game, too. We don’t know when it’s going to be played yet. Good point. So, Jud, uh, by the way, what’s your record heading into this game? Nine. Uh, Phil and I are in sync at nine and seven and you’re at 8 and eight. Yep. So, how do they shake out? And do they make the playoffs? They run out of steam. They run out of gas. They lose. Nine and eight. Nine and eight. It’s just It feels like it’s trending to be a long year. um lot of things. So yeah, un unfortunately my optimism of training camp has been slowed. Hopefully I’m wrong, but uh because it’s obviously more fun if they make the playoffs for everyone involved, including uh including Purple Daily and the great sponsors that take care of us. Uh but I’ve got them losing the game nine and eight. Yeah. So actually, so I do have this as a win. Um, and I I don’t if you didn’t they’d be under 500. We’d be really upset. I mean, I and I don’t think that’s like out of the realm of possibility. I I it’s it’s very possible that they’re under 500. I I told you guys on the hottest take two weeks ago that I I think they’ll be lucky to make the playoffs. Um, I do think uh with the injuries and everything else that I’m more I am more interested right now and honestly JJ McCarthy’s development than them being like a playoff sleeper overnight. I just I think it’s going to be too much to overcome. Uh so I have this as a win. I have this as a win because I do think they can beat Green Bay and plus maybe Green Bay has wrapped things up seating wise. So like maybe they’re resting players. Um so that that’s my long-winded way of saying Detroit has probably won the North. The Packers have also clinched a wild card spot and maybe can’t really move up uh from where they’re at in their standings. So, the Vikings win this game, but does nine and eight get them in as like the last team? Yeah, I don’t know. Um I mean, theoretically, right? It it could it probably comes down to tie breakers. So, I was going to say you’ve left a lot of things out of your own control. Yep. So, well, let me let’s just play a game here as I I do this on the fly. So, the Vikings have in my schedule. I’m looking at like NFC conference tiebreers. Vinnie, you’re okay. Vincent. Vincent’s upset. Why you What are you crying for? Sunny’s crying. House is out of control. So, the good news would be if like if the Eagles and Commanders and Cowboys even uh in my schedule release are all nine and eight, the Vikings have the head-to-head tiebreaker. They don’t have the tiebreaker against Seattle, which would be big. They don’t have the tiebreaker against the Giants, who I don’t think are making the playoffs, but you never know. Um, so right now, yeah, it would just come down to tiebreers. I think 9 and eight, and I I’ll just say no to answer the question, then not be a cheapkate here. I’ll say no. 9 and 8 does not get them in a year ago. Green Bay was the last team in at 11 and six. Yeah, it was deep. So, if that repeats itself, even close. And in the AFC, it was not as good. But Denver was the last team in at 10 and seven. Okay. So, nine wins probably does not get you one of those spots. No, not at all. So, there it is. Phil say Phil said uh uh uh sorry, win against the Packers, which would put Phil at 10 and seven. So, so you got a chance then. Yep. Yeah. I feel like nine and eight probably it’s fair to say. Let me let me double check my math here. Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10. Yeah, he has 10 wins. So, so 10 and seven for Phil, me and my sports dad. Nine and eight.
