Matthew Schaefer Scores First Career NHL Goal! | New York Islanders News

Mitch, the Islanders would get a power play opportunity pretty early. 326 in. Uh Roy goes off for slashing against Simon Holmstrom. Yep. Power play comes out. Matthew Schaefer’s on the top power play. Mhm. That excites me. It’s something that I talked about in the preview last game. I said I I don’t think we’re long for Tony D’Angelo on power play one. In comes Matthew Schaefer and he gets on the board with his first goal. Talk about chaos. The chaos in front of the net on this one. How did Kyle Palary not freaking score that goal to be like right away? No. Yeah. And Matthew Schaefer comes in and then runs and jumps off the boards. An absolutely electric moment. Super happy for him. He’s got two points through two games. Point per game. Ma uh Matthew Schaefer. Let’s go. Uh what bothered me with this Mitch is that it took eight eight minutes of a delay for them to finally say, “Oh, yep. That’s a goal.” First it starts, they rule it a goal on the ice. There’s a few mi a TV timeout they call it. After the TV timeout, then you get the coach’s challenge and they look at it for another extra couple minutes. And I’m sitting there saying, if you don’t know after all this time, you’re still looking at the same play. It’s inconclusive. It’s you got to stick whatever the call was on the ice. And thankfully, they finally did. But I was like, man, you cannot call that back right now. No, you cannot. Like it it’s way too long. They gave them a lot of time to figure out if they wanted to challenge it or not, which is borderline unacceptable. Um I get it. Like it kind of looks like he he hits it and you can make the argument that Bo Horvat tries to punch it in the net, but it doesn’t go in. But try it. You can make an argument. It’s not conclusive that he tried to do that. You can argue that he just like moved his stick because he was getting pushed in. It’s it wasn’t clear on on the review, at least according to the referees. And so you can’t you can’t call that back. And so fair freaking goal, give the kid his cake. Just absolute glorious stuff. And and like the puck isn’t there when he’s bolting towards the net. He doesn’t see the puck right away, but he’s thinking, I’m going to go anyways. It’s pure chaos. Maybe I can tap it in. And sure enough, it follows right in front of him and he goes just shovels it in. It’s not the most beautiful goal in the world, but it’s a 1,00% or 10,00 point IQ play from Matthew Schaer. Yeah. And it’s kind of that’s what I think I’ve came away most impressed with through two games. Again, I know it’s really early. We know the speed is good. We know how well he skates, but he is smart beyond his years. He literally just turned 18. He’s playing his second NHL game tonight. And some of the hockey IQ plays that he’s making is just like, oh boy. like they they got something here. Yeah. Like Rick Rock starts it off that the chat. Let me be the first to say that Matthew Schaefer is not elite. He’s generational. He’s the best overall defenseman I’ve seen in a generation. So I mean he he looked he looked really good. Ple I again early two games but this looks awesome right now and I am just excited to be along for the ride. We’re coming out a post game in a game they lost four to2, but you could tell by the tone. There’s a lot of positivity in our tone right now because I mean most of it because of how Matthew Schaefer played in this game. It was phenomenal after he scored that goal. I think Patty then and the entire defensive you know crew is just kind like we have to play this kid. You have to play him uh non-stop. He was out there every other shift which you know maybe a little bit too much but they were trying to win a game and he was giving them he was the only one to give them something offensively. Yeah. the other defenseman just were not doing it. And his skating just creates so much chaos. His He might be I I think against maybe better teams, they’re going to find a ways to exploit his pinching and and that’s fine. He’s 18 what 18 years old in 36 days. Like, let’s chill out here. Um I just hope that they don’t coach out his offensive pinching because it is so goddamn good. I’ll take the risk that it might bring defensively. I’ll take it. Yeah, they just I mean not a fix on October 11th, but they just need to find a good defenseman to to play with him. Scott Scott Scott Mayfield is is tough right now. Tony D’Angelo is not a good option, and I I don’t think Ryan Pelock’s a great option either. So, uh that’s likely a next summer conversation looking for who are you going to pair with Matthew Schaefer. But the kid was awesome.

  1. Roy needs to put Schaefer with Pelech. He's our best stay at home D-man. Mayfield has 2 skills. Blocking shots and clearing netfront. Unfortunately, defending the rush isn't one of them, and that's what Schaefer will need with how deep, and how often, he was going into the O-zone. It's time to move on from Mayfield and his dumb penalties. Let Boqvist and George alternate with Romo.

  2. In addition to all the great things you mentioned, he’s also the only guy I’ve seen move the puck with Barzy where we look like we have a truly threatening pair attacking the net. Damn, this kid is special. I was very impressed with Shabinov also. He has some serious skill that if he can settle in with a gd pairing will be another threat.
