3 Questions the Winnipeg Jets Must Answer

[Music] What’s going on everybody and welcome back to another video. Today we got a very fun one. We’re going to be looking at three questions the Winnipeg Jets have to answer. And you know, there’s a lot of stuff that we’re going to learn about this team uh before the end of the year. A lot of stuff that, you know, we’re going to find out, you know, fairly early on in the season. We’ll get into all of it, of course. Uh, but this is a very important season for the Winnipeg Jets. An aging core coming off of a President’s Trophy season. Let’s get right on into the questions. Question number one, and maybe the most burning in Winnipeg right now, are the Winnipeg Jets going to be able to battle the injury bug early on in the season? Are they going to be able to overcome it? And, you know, it’s going to be tough. They’re going to have to fight tooth and nail to get through what they are dealing with. of course not starting the year with Adam Lowry. We already know this. Uh going to miss probably roughly the first month of the season. Hopefully early November, you know, that’s his target. He’ll be back, you know. Then you got Dylan Samberg. 6 to 8 weeks without him. Probably the Jets best shutdown defenseman. And uh yeah, you know, with without him, it kind of seems like we’re going to see a lot of Stanley and Flurry in the top four partnered with Neil Pian. We’ve seen how some of that has gone here in the preseason. It hasn’t been glowing. Hasn’t looked great in the past either in past seasons. You know, that’s going to be a tough hurdle to climb for the Jets in terms of stability. Good thing they have Connor Hella back there. They’re going to need him to be the hard trophy winner that he was a year ago because if he’s not, this could get ugly and quick. Now we head over to the forwards. Cole Perfetti. We don’t know how long he’s out now, but it doesn’t sound encouraging. Scott Arneal saying that, you know, hopefully it’s not as bad as it looks. That’s not really what I wanted to hear, Scott. Um, but yeah, so Cole Perfetti is injured, too. Not really what we were hoping for here. Jonathan Taves day to day. Think he’ll be in their night one, but yeah, lots of injuries here for the Winnipeg Jets. Are they going to be able to get through it early on? We will see, of course. But yeah, this is going to be a big big test for this club. Starting 15-1 last season really helped them propel themselves into a great spot. They pretty much led the Central Division all year long. Almost everything went right for the Winnipeg Jets pretty much the entire season for them. This season, not much has gone right so far through the preeason. This is a very competitive division. You know, highlighted by the Avalanche, the Stars, the Jets obviously winning the President’s Trophy last year and the division. The Mammoth got better. The Minnesota Wild look like they’ve gotten better. The St. Louis Blues look like they’ve gotten better from a year ago. Obviously, a tough out in the first round. The Jets are going to have their hands full and they’re going to have to have everybody stepping up, especially through the first couple months here, uh, missing Lowry Samberg and we’ll see how long Perfetti is out. Moving on to the next question. Is Kyle Connor going to resign in Winnipeg? All the reports that we’re hearing is that the two sides want to make something work. So, it does sound like Kyle Connor wants to stay in Winnipeg, but it does seem like the hangup right now on the contract is the structure. Uh, you know, it sounds like he wants to have it more structured, kind of like how the Vegas and Marner deal went down. Uh, you know, where there’s a lot of bonuses, but it doesn’t sound like the Jets are crazy about structuring his contract that way. Now, if we go over to Minnesota, Carl Capriovv just signed a mega deal, highest paid player in NHL history, $17 million every single season. A lot of that contract was bonuses. Most of the contract was bonuses. So, uh, you know, we’ll see if Connor gets what he wants. Does the Capriovv contract inflate his salary? It definitely could. Can see his agent being like, “Hey, well, if Capriov is making that much, you know, Connor is not that much worse than him, right? He should be making, you know, this much money.” So, you know, estimate right now was between 12 and $13 million. I wonder if it gets inflated a little bit more, maybe 13.5, maybe even 14. We’ll have to see what happens. But this uh this negotiation, if it doesn’t go well for Winnipeg and they aren’t able to, you know, make a deal between themselves and Connor, they may need to look at the trade market because this is a type of player that you cannot lose for nothing. contract expires at the end of this season. I’d imagine the Jets would love to have it done yesterday. Uh but you know, they do have some stuff to work on here. If the Jets do explore a trade, I do imagine they’d have many suitors. They would get the best return, however, with the team that, you know, Connor would be willing to sign long-term with. It would be very similar to the Miko Ratn to uh the Dallas Stars trade, right? Not the Carolina acquiring him trade. I I think it’s going to be a lot more similar to the return or they could get a lot similar of a return to, you know, what Carolina got back from Dallas. And that’s not a bad thing by any means. Obviously, keeping Kyle Connor would be great, but it, you know, at the end of the day, if he’s not going to resign or the Jets aren’t going to meet his needs, they cannot lose him for nothing. We’ll see how this unfolds. right now. I think that it’s more likely than not that he resigns. But this is something that everybody should be monitoring as this is a big big moment in the franchise’s future and could, you know, really change the direction of where the Jets are going here for the next five seasons. Now, the third and final question, maybe the most important one here, will the Winnipeg Jets be able to defeat Father Time? Last year, they had a lot of veterans come out and have career years. They looked incredible. they were able to turn back the clock. Are they going to be able to do that this season with the players they had last year and the players that they’ve picked up in free agency? In free agency, the Winnipeg Jets have signed Jonathan Taves, currently 37, will be 38 by the end of the regular season. Is he going to be able to turn the clocks back? Is he going to be able to be a guy that can really help this team? Is he going to be able to be Jonathan Taves? You could argue that, you know, this season hinges on how well he does play because if Tapes turns into a guy that can put up 35 points, you know, not really what the Jets are looking for. Can’t argue that it would be a successful return for him to the NHL, but the Jets need a true number two centerman. Can Taves be that guy? We’re going to see if he’s able to beat Father Time. Take a look at the rest of the veterans on this team. Gustav Nyquis signed in free agency. Two years ago, he had a 70point season. That was two seasons ago. He is up there in age. He’s going to get a shot in the top six. Does he have some big-time magic left in his career? We’re going to find out. He’s going to be getting some chances there in the top six. Guys like Neonita Ryder, you know, inching towards their mid30s. Adam Lowry when he returns inching towards mid30s too, right? You know, you’ve got some older players here, Dylan Dlo, Mark Shley getting up there in age. Um, of course, you’ve got Vladimnikov. All of these guys are getting older. Are they going to be able to replicate the seasons that they had a season ago and two seasons ago? We’re going to find out very soon as the season is around the corner. The Jets have a lot of question marks facing their franchise and they’re going to have to face some big time adversity. Something that they didn’t have to face for a lot of last season. But what do you guys think? Lots of questions to ask about the Winnipeg Jets. Have I missed any questions? Are there any questions you need answers from the Winnipeg Jets? 1. When I watched that Calgary game, I saw Stanley still doing the same mistakes, hopefully (HOPEFULLY) he smartens up and starts playing like an NHL defenceman. If not they should try to get Mario Ferraro before the season starts
