How can Colton Dach UNLOCK Connor Bedard as lines change? | CHGO Blackhawks Podcast
One loss and Jeff Blashel’s already hitting the line blender. We’ll give you up the updates next and hear from the head coach coming up next on CHGO Blackhawks. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] Happy Wednesday. Welcome into the CHGO Blackhawks podcast. I’m Jay Zawoski. That’s Mario Tierosi. Sean Anderson’s over there. Tony Gills over there. We got everybody. Stevens over there. Luke Stuckmer’s that way. Emma is somewhere that way. It’s a full house for Jake Flanigan’s birthday. That’s why everyone’s here. That’s all I can imagine. I Yes. I I think we all got the invitation to his party except Jake. He doesn’t know this, but I’m popping out of a cake for him later. That’s a giant cake is for. Hey, okay, fine. It’s big. It’s pretty big. Uh, thanks for being with us. We appreciate it. We are one game into the season, and we’ve already got some line changes going on at Blackbox practice. I’m panicking. The panic button has been smashed just like you are going to smash the like button on the YouTube page right now. Then you’re going to smash the subscribe button on the YouTube page. Then you’re going to open your podcast app, hit follow, hit subscribe there. So, when the podcast processes, boom, you get the alert. You listen to it after you watched it. Cut to profits. Yes. Larry’s wondering how many likes specifically they have to get for the show to start. For it to start. Yeah. We started. Well, we started. The show has began. If if if we don’t reach a hundred likes, the show doesn’t get published. So, we hope you all like it. Otherwise, no one will be able to You know what, Larry? I appreciate your hustle. Let’s find out. Let’s see. And maybe I’ll pop out of a cake on the show. So, you never know if we get enough likes. All right, let’s get into it. Uh, we’ve got some line changes today at practice. During the game, by the way, if you missed it, the top line was switched. Uh, Ryan Donado went down. Ilia McKay went up, but today at practice that was not necessarily the case. Your lines were Bard centering Doc and Burkovski, Nazar, Terravine, and Bertusi sticks together as they should. Diggson, Donado, McKayv, and then Green with Felino and Laferdy. your D pairs Vic who will be back against Boston and Renzel Kaiser Lechnov and Grizzlick and Murphy. So Colton Doc to the top line. Uh your initial thoughts. Uh my initial thought is that’s I have two initial thoughts. Okay. Believe that. Um, I’m surprised that the change was more than just a one-off in game um for basically just the third period. I I wouldn’t have expected Jeff Blashel to kind of go make a change game one to game two just kind of going by how he had talked all summer and preseason and everything. Um, my other reaction being that it’s Doc going up and not just the same change of McKay going up is what an opportunity for for Colton Doc like to get put onto the top line. You’re playing alongside Conor Bard. Um he’s just been like fasttracked deservedly so I would say uh from the start of training camp to now going into game two of the season he’s playing on the top line alongside Conor Bard. Like he has really worked himself into uh these opportunities and and the game he had last night. I mean he had a a chance with Conor Bard uh on that twoon-one. when the puck just goes off the heel of his of his blade and he’s not able to to get a really good chance uh out of it, but he was there for it. Um he was physical. I know his minutes weren’t weren’t high, but in the role that he played, I think he he he did what he was asked, and he’s getting this opportunity to play alongside Baddard, play with Burkovski, who I know a lot of people had problems with in his first game. Um but it’s it’s a new mixture. See what happens. You’re not playing the Panthers. Bruins are still a good team, better than you, but it’s not the Panthers. No, let’s let it play out before we call the Panthers better than the Blackhawks. Let’s not jump to conclusions here. Okay. Um, a couple things on this as I’ve been thinking about it and we got in this discussion last night where a lot of people are saying screw it. Put Nazar with the Bard already and just get it over with. Move Bard to wing and put the two best players together. And the point you made was well Nazar helps Bedard by not being on his line too because it makes the the opponent have to make a decision on which line to stop and say okay if we commit everything we’ve got to shutting down Connor Badard the Nazar Terravine and Bertuzi line is going to get us. They got the Panthers twice last night. You put them together then the focus all goes to that one line. So more than or maybe I think this is a demotion for Donado, but it also is a bit of a boost for that third line. It gives it a little more scoring punch with Dickinson with McKay and Donado. And then Doc with Bedard and Berikovski is kind of a clone of that second line where you’ve got the speedy playmaking center. You’ve got the net front win along the boards winger and then you’ve got the facilitating skilled other winger. Yeah, it’s kind of a similar makeup between Baddard is Nazar, Barakovski is Terrainan, and Doc is Bertusi. It’s not identical, but it’s kind of similar in terms of the attributes that those guys have. Yeah, it’s similar in what you’re trying to I think the style you’re trying to accomplish is a little bit similar. I think the reason that Ryan Donado last night uh got moved down and McKay went up is because in the moment in the game, I think what they were trying to do was have more puck possession. And McKay was uh having a really good night as far as being hard on the puck, being hard on the forche and and trying to keep possession. whereas Donado, I think he it was with him in that mix, it just wasn’t working. Um, so you made that you made that switch. Now, is Colton Doc going to be a possession guy? I don’t necessarily know that that’s going to be his his game and his style, but we do know that energy, effort, compete level, physicality, we know that you’re going to get that from Colton Doc night after night. So, I think maybe the matchup of going up against Boston uh might play into Doc being maybe a little bit more effective in that role and hopefully that opens up ice for Conor Bard who as we saw last night like he can create his own chances. I think the the speed is is evident. It’s not a um it’s not a myth. Like he is actually faster playing faster. I saw you publish we’ll get into that a little bit later the speed the speed burst for yesterday. So I I I think if if Doc can can be that get the puck, be physical guy, then you can allow Burkovsky and Baddard to maybe play that more skill game uh and hopefully open things up for him. Well, and it’s I think as we’re making the comparison to to the Bertusi’s role for Doc that Bertusi’s not a puck controller either. He’s going to get the puck off the boards. He’s going to go in front of the net when you do have possession and cause havoc there. he’s going to go behind the net and try to wrestle it away from people. I I watched the highlight of his um secondary assist on Tavo’s goal last night probably 100 times today because that that play was just so well executed where Berusi just chips it off the boards in the Hawk zone. Nazar grabs it at full speed while turning completely around, you know, a 180 to get the puck in stride and then gets it over the table. It’s a beautiful play and you’re seeing what all three of those guy you’re seeing the skill sets of all three of those guys on display. If you had to give a nutshell description of what this line does, that’s it right there. Um, and I think Doc is the kind of guy who, yeah, he’s not going to carry the puck into the zone. He’s not going to be distributing left and right, but he’s going to go play that gritty game that is needed. Not to say that Ryan Donado can’t do that, but I do think you put Donado down there with Dickinson and uh McKay and it’s three lines with some scoring punch on it, and they haven’t had that really ever. Not in the last few years. Not since they were lifting Stanley Cups. Yeah. Yeah. I I I like the that third line. I mean, with Doc on that third line, it still feels like a really good third line because Dickinson and McKev can be, you know, defensive matchup guys, but also both of them have scored 20 goals before. Um, now with Donado and Doc, like I think that the play profile is similar. I don’t think Ryan Donado is as inherently physical like Colton Doc is, but I don’t think Colton Doc is going to be a guy that has 30 goal potential, right? Um, but he doesn’t need to be to be successful in the NHL. But, you know, we saw that last year from from Ryan Donado. So, that third line feels like a very stereotypical NHL third line now with the Donado, McKayv, uh, and Dickinson group. Those are all three guys that can that have had PK responsibility. They’re they’re it’s a good defensive matchup um, third line and and yeah, it’s it’s got scoring punch on it. So it it could it could again as we have this discussion about helping Bard the matchups that teams will have to deal with both offensively and defensively. Like if you say okay we’ll shut down your top three lines maybe you have a night where Ryan Donado scores a goal and I McKay scores a goal and if you’re not trying to defensively stop that group that’s a group that can also you know attack you offensively. So it’s again through the lens of Blackhawks only. Um, it’s a it’s a good top nine as far as what you’re trying to balance out. Obviously, it’s not all stars on each line like the Florida Panthers last night, but what you’re trying to accomplish, I think, can still be there. It’s it’s going to be interesting because Doc Bardovsky have had one practice together now. Um, I know Doc and Baddard played I was Doc Baddard Riel that first preseason game was the top line I believe it was. So, um, so I mean they have a little bit of time together, but getting Burkovsky in there as the trio, that’ll be interesting to see. But McKay of Dickinson, Donado, they’ve played together enough. I I I don’t think those guys meshing together is going to be much of an issue. Yeah. Well, we are uh you know, we’re three we’re one game in and we already are up to three line combinations for Conor Vadard so far. Yeah. So, trying to break last year’s record. Yeah. And I know uh we’re going to hear from what what Jeff Flashel had to say uh today after practice in the next segment, but we f went back to Jeff Flashel’s introductory press conference. This is something we’ve referenced a lot where he says he’s not going to panic and make changes just because things aren’t going well. Uh this is from May 27th. this ver this video courtesy of the Blackhawks. Here’s what Jeff Lash had to say during his introductory press conference. The stages we were at in Detroit uh honestly is is a bit different than the stage that we’re at here to be to be honest with you. Um but as you’re going through those processes, you know, one of the big things as a coach, you want to help your team and you want to find answers and um so at times you’re searching for answers. How can we best put our guys in the best position to have success? And there’s certainly times as you go through that you that you can over search for answers that you can um maybe change a system when maybe that’s not what needs to be done. And and sometimes you just have to stay calm uh believe in the process and stay the course. And I just think uh going through those those times allows me uh to to remain calm and stay focused on the process in the face of the adversity that you face as you’re trying to go from being a team that’s that’s near the bottom to being a team that’s at the top. So he specifically mentions changing systems, not necess not just changing lines. So when I always like in my minds I thinking back on that comment when he made it, it really hung with me during the entire off season. But going back and finding it today, he was more being specific about I’m not going to change the way we take the ice and we formed a power play and those sort of things. Every coach is going to change lines. But I do we need to see some consistency and it’s not look not just everything is counterbard focused. It can’t all be about Baddard but let these guys get some run together and figure out what works. And if it’s going to be Doc Baddard and Burkovski with Donado on the third line, fine, but give it more than two periods. Let’s let these things get some time to work together and see what happens. Well, he talked about it in the in the preseason about, you know, wanting to maybe having to kind of pull himself back from changing things up and mixing things up in the preseason and wanting to use the preseason and those games um to give the NHL guys run together and and and find that chemistry to start the season. and and and I think we talked about it in the context of what we saw this past preseason with what we saw last preseason where things were different almost every game including with the NHL guys. So that when you started the regular season you kind of we we went into the regular season kind of like wondering, okay, what are going to be the lines for the first game? Whereas going into last night’s game, we already had a sense of it because we had seen it for a good chunk of the preseason. So, I would have expected that to maybe continue through the first few games of the year, but you know, if if if Jeff Blashel wants to make a change, and it’s not this isn’t like he’s throwing the lineup into the blender and pressing puree, like we’re we’re we’re flipping two players uh on on two lines. Like, it’s it’s not a complete overhaul. Um, but it is a change. And one thing that Blashel did say around that same time when he was talking with us was on the topic of lineup changes, sitting guys, how he wants to um you know instill culture and and accountability and everything. He listed what his non-negotiables were. non-negotiables on the ice were uh compete effort level um being systematically sound like things like that. I’m not saying Ryan Donado was not competing last night, but I think they’re I I think the fact that it’s Doc going up, compete, effort level, you know, playing into your role. Those are all things that Colton Doc checks the box basically night after night. So maybe it’s a reward instead of a punishment. I think I I think that might be it. And it might be just trying to maybe fit Donado somewhere else. Yeah, it could be a one-time thing. We might have a a new lineup for Saturday. Who knows? But I think it’s he’s trying this against Boston. See how it looks. Go from there. I just hope that if that is indeed the case, that Doc is getting a promotion and a reward for working his ass off in the preseason, obviously working his ass off in the offseason, and having a good game against the Panthers, that that’s communicated to Donado. And because I think that’s an issue we had with Luke Richardson, you saw Taylor Hall say, “Look, man, if you want a healthy scratching me, healthy scratch me, but give me some feedback as to why you’re doing things.” Yeah. Right. Is to as to why you’re making these decisions so Ryan Donado doesn’t show up in practice today, see the lines, and be like, “Yeah, what did I do? WTF?” You know what I mean? All right, we’re going to hit the break zone for the first time. Do us a favor, hit that like button. Uh we’re going to hear from Jeff Flashel from today. We come back and get some more into the lineup and uh talk about what Alex Vassic’s return is going to mean. That’s next on CHGO Blackhawks. You like betting on football, do you? Speaking of the Sharks, see their top line. I did not. Mlin CBrini is c uh centering Will Smith and Philip Kurishv. 55 point season incoming for Philip Kurish out. Here it comes. Yep. Also, Michael Misa was scratched. Oh, interesting. Are they doing a Leo Carlson thing with him? I have no idea. Easing him in. Speaking of uh California hockey, California, what do you think of the uh LA Kings? Oh. Uh test test running what the Blackhawks are going to do on December 13th. Yeah, I think it went well for them. Yeah, I uh the jerseys themselves are fine. I feel like the helmet took away from the jersey. If you missed it, they took warm-ups in their traditional uh the matte black helmet which looks so good. The matte black is so good. Vancouver’s doing those too and they look awesome. When we were in Vegas for the 24 draft and they rolled out the jerseys, I went up to that Kings jersey and I was like, “This is so good.” If I was a Kings fan, I would have I would have bought that jersey so fast. Well, if I was a Kings fan, I would demand the purple jerseys come back, but that’s a different story. So, they had the, you know, the expected jerseys on for warm-ups, the regulars. Then the game begins and they come out with the variation of the the traditional purple Kings jersey. It’s on your screen right now with the old school crown, but it’s the black and the silver. And then they come out with silver helmets, but they’re not chrome because they had been wearing chrome helmets, right? Like reflective mirrored helmets. These are almost like a Dallas Cowboys silver or a Raiders. Raiders probably more appropriate because of the color scheme. Silver. Yeah. Yeah. Not matte. It was not working for me. Chrome. Yeah. I I saw the the reveal and I was just like, “Okay, that’s that’s a that’s a Kings jersey for sure. But yeah, just the whole look, I don’t know. I wasn’t thrilled about it. I still I mean, again, I think their original look looks better, the Wayne the Wayne Gretzky, Tony Granado era of the Kings. Um, but yeah, I I I think it’s I I think the jerseys look fine. Again, the execution of it, I’m telling you, December 13th, watch out. All right. Watch out. Yeah. If you missed it last week on Reddit, there was a leak of what looked like black the traditional ‘9s black Blackhawks jerseys with the Fanatics branding. Brandon. Yeah. Someone had ordered a Blackhawks Centennial jersey and that is what they and they got that instead. Got um so we started to So we’re speculating that’s the day the black Chris Chelios bobblehead is being released. Yep. So maybe that’s the day that that jersey comes out. It’s uh I’m here for it. I’m going to conspiracy theory my way all the way up to December 13th, all the way up to warm-ups and puck drop. I’m not again, as I said that show, I’m not saying this, but you might read into the fact that I asked a couple people in the organization about it. Hey, did you see this leak? Did you see these? Anything to say? Radio silence. Maybe my text didn’t go through. Maybe I’m in a bad Wi-Fi spot. Maybe they blocked me, which is understandable. That’s true. Maybe it means nothing. I’m not saying. I’m just saying. Did you ask specifically about the 13th? No. That’s your problem. That is Mario’s theory. Maybe Mario should ask about the 13th. I think I’m just going to keep saying it until someone tells me to stop saying it. You get slapped in the face at the far from the Blackhawks to tell me uh to tell you to shut up. Yeah. to tell me to shut up about something. But um yeah, I I uh I don’t know, man. I I think having cuz that was okay, we’re having fun with this blah blah blah, whatever. Pepe Sylvia meme. Um but seeing the Kings do that, the thing that we were kind of saying like why would they why would the Hawks do that? The Kings actually did it. This is on me. I did not explain this well enough. It was a surprise. There was no tip that they those jerseys were ever produced and they were suddenly like and now they’re available in the store. They did they did a video package like before taking the ice after warm-ups before the game started and they you you know you saw all the visuals on the on the video board and everything and then they take the ice and everyone’s like, “Oh, holy crap. They’re wearing different jerseys and stuff.” So that was the the roll out and the surprise and everything. Um my yeah my skepticism was why would a team do something like that have no promotion of something and just boom you know do it that way but then the Kings go and do it on opening night I’m like oh it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the team would do that. So again December 13th Blackhawks verse Red Wings CHDO takeover. I think the Hawks are taking that into consideration too that it’s a Hawks takeover. That it’s a CHO takeover. I’ll say this right now. If Blackhawks, you release that black jersey that day, I will go buy one. Oh, for sure. For the set. I’m I will buy one. I’ll start a new line of credit and get get a couple. I am getting I’ll maybe we get uh I would get like maybe a Lechinov or a Nazar to add to our set. I can count You can guarantee one sale for sure that night. I’m buying one. Um think of the crowd that’s going to be in that building for Blackhawks Red Wings. It also lines up perfectly because not only do you have the Chelios thing, you’re playing the Red Wings. Cool. Uh it’s also conveniently 2 weeks before Christmas, the home for the holidays thing. So you also give enough leeway for if someone bought the Centennial jersey the day it was announced, which was what, like April or whatever it was, April, May, whatever. You’ve got some time. You got some refractory period on buying that one. And now the black ones are out right before Christmas. It makes a lot of sense. Yeah, but again, I’m not saying. I’m just saying. Yeah, this is all speculation, but it’s starting to sound like a really strong business plan if you ask me. I will say this by two people who are not on the business side of things. If it was not a plan that when the Jersey leaked Oh, but it is now. They’re like, damn, that Mario’s on to something. That’s a good idea. Yeah, you can Venmo the marketing firm at Tbasian for the idea uh on Venmo or just maybe one just shows up here. Yeah, post game show. Yeah, maybe there’s an envelope I pick up at the UC or something. A giant envelope. Yeah, stuff with a black comically sized envelope. Dead dove do not eat. Yes, exactly. Uh all right, back to back to the real things. And if this doesn’t happen on December 13th, all this footage will be deleted. Marioall.com. get your complaints uh in your immediately and I’ll screenshot them and put them online. Oh, see, and the Potato Empire says, “And you have to have the Red Wings wear red.” So, it’s the black jersey versus red. That would be sweet. Oh, okay. Cuz then the Red Wings could wear their Centennial jerseys. Mhm. See, like that. Sure. All right. I’m being told to hit the break zone early when we come back. I started the timer late. I Well, it’s more that I think that you’re going to play 28 minutes and you want to play BL. Blash’s 5 minutes. So, if you want to get conspirizing for a minute just chat for a minute and a half. He says, “Nikaitita Zidorov had the most PY minutes last season. Seems like Arty Lechinov might be gunning for that record this year. Yeah, he had four penalty minutes uh yesterday. Could have had six. Could have gotten called for spearing. It was incidental. Didn’t mean to do it, but they certainly could have called it if they wanted to. But yeah, tough first period for him for sure. I’m glad he settled down for the last 40. But look, Arnold Lef is going to be a roller coaster this year. It that just get ready for it. Yeah, you just want the highs to be really high and outnumber the lows that hopefully aren’t. I just don’t know if those are going to stop by sending him to Rockford. No, I don’t think so. No, I I I think you drafted him knowing the the style of player that he is and the expectation is that style at its peak when he’s a fully mature, fully realized NHL player is that it it he can be one of the top elite defenseman, a guy who can be a number one on a team, a guy who can be put in all situations and those peaks are super high and and are evident of that elite level skill and the valleys are like h it’s a one-off or something like that or it’s just like well you know no one’s perfect on on the ice but as a still raw talent like Lechnov is he’s kind of he has to get refined at the NHL level and I’ll say the mistakes he made yesterday were not um like horrible decisions or terrible misreads. They were puck mistakes. Yeah. It was a turnover uh and a mishandle, you know, it wasn’t like, “Oh my god, where’s he going?” Yeah. It was, “Oh god, dude, hold on to the puck or be stronger on the puck with the pass or whatever.” Those sort of things. I think a lot of that, not just for him, but for a lot of the team was nerves and adrenaline uh kind of taking over. Yeah. I mean, that’s that’s going to come with a with a young team is you’re not going to have 82 games of mistake hockey. That’s just unrealistic to think about. All right, let’s get to uh Jeff Blashel. He spoke today after Hawks practice this morning. This courtesy of the Chicago Blackhawks. After watching tape, anything you picked up that you didn’t see live? Um, no. I just think uh, you know, when I watched the game back last night on the plane, you we did some good stuff. We had some moments of good and we just we have to you know mature as a hockey team to um not allow uh so many big chances and and you know a lot of those I think are preventable. Um but that takes time. It’s uh it’s part of uh having a group that’s got to learn it. It’s part of um you know honestly young players learning it. Um it’s so hard to create chances that you can’t give easy ones up. And it’s just a kind of a learning process we’re going to have to go through through the year. And I’ve said this lot. It’s like we’re going to have throughout a game we’re going to have, you know, peaks and valleys and we just got to make those valleys less severe. We asked you before the game how you felt going into, you know, being behind the bench for the first time in a regular season game. How did it how did you feel once you got out there? Yeah, I think, you know, obviously, honestly, the atmosphere was awesome. Uh, you know, the them raising the banner made for a pretty cool uh uh game in early October. Um, I was very very impressed with uh their team. Um, I I obviously know how good they are, but but for them to not take their foot off the gas at all, and I thought they came out and played a a really really really hard game uh for game one after being to three straight finals. Um, for me personally, it was uh it’s Listen, I’m enjoying I’m enjoying this uh uh this journey. I’m enjoying this group. I’m enjoying our coaching staff and it was uh fun to be back in the action that way. Talking to Renzel, I mean, he got over 25 minutes. No other defenseman had more than 19. um he he wasn’t that happy with how he played, but how comfortable are you leaning on having Alex Black back will help? But yeah, at this point in his career, I that’s too many minutes for him to be honest with you. That’s kind of on us as a staff. Uh um you know, it it he he’s you know, he was out there obviously first PP. Uh he’s out there a lot on the PK and ultimately it’s it’s just too many minutes uh to kind of uh place on any defenseman. you know, I’ve had the chance to coach Victor Hedmond over the last number of years and and he’s not playing that many minutes. So, we got to dial that back. We probably just lost uh lost those minutes a little bit. So, that’s something that we’ll dial back. Um you know, certainly having blast will help that. Um but, you know, as it’s a just too much weight to carry over uh over a period of time, so we’ll dial that back. How do you feel about how he played and kind of moving forward your working with him on? Yeah, I don’t you know, I I think um I think Ren has another level. Um, you know, I thought it was a lot for for our young defenseman last night. Um, but that’s just part of the learning process and and you know, I think with him in particular, what makes him special and what makes him elite is his ability to make plays with the puck and and I think um, you know, he he just has to continue to and I believe he will have the confidence to take the extra second and make the the the right play. And sometimes the right play is to put into space, but a lot of times for him the right play is going to be to find a guy on the tape. and and you know that’s just a a you know I think when you when you played college you had a little more time probably and the physical confrontation was a maybe a little easier to handle. Uh there’s a little less time and the physical confrontation gets harder for him. So it’s just that balance of having that poise and and delivering the puck at the right time and and I just I think he’ll continue to to to grow as a player throughout the course of the year. Do you see Blastic as a I guess a settling presence too where he’s not he’s not the old guy but he’s not the young guy. He sort of has that sort of middle spot in this team. Yeah. No. Um I I there’s zero doubt, you know, and he’s a guy that uh you know, I would have liked to have him in last night’s game and and everybody misses guys for sure, but he’s a key guy for us back there. He’s uh you know, I thought through camp until he got hurt, um he had had a great camp. Um you particularly just watching him in practice, I thought he was really good on breakouts. He’s just a really, really, really good player. And so to miss him, uh and I know he’s not old, but on our decor he is. And he also plays, I think, a very mature game. There’s not a lot of peaks and valleys in his game. So, um, you know, that that is definitely a steadying presence and we’ll welcome him back. So, he is he will play tomorrow night anticipating that he plays hopefully. Starting to couch it a little more. Well, I know how this world goes. So, as we sit here today, he’s going to play tomorrow night. How about that? That’ll do. Yeah. Good. N Late in the game, you you put Nazar and Bad out there. Do you see that as a I guess an option where you guys need some goals that you you’ll combine them? Yeah, I think that was more, you know, kind of getting ready for the six on five. Um, but but there’s, you know, we’ll we’ll try different things. We’ll try different things as we go through the course of the year and and uh um, you know, they’re obviously both centers and I think they’re both long-term centers to to a large degree. So, um, we’re not necessarily going to do it full-time, but, you know, there’s been different duos that have done that at times. Uh, when I first came in the league, Pavl and Zedterberg did it with the Red Wings, obviously. Um, Connor and Leon do in Edmonton, you know, where there’s times we pair them together. So there’ll be times where we do that. Uh, you know, Frankie’s line’s going pretty good right now. So I don’t I don’t want to tinker with that one too much right now. It seemed like there was one play where Bard had set up Doc and there, you know, they’ve created chance. Do you do you see the possibility of what something they did on there? That’s I guess Stephen just Doc has that potential to play up in the lineup. Yeah, like the one thing I’d give uh Docker a lot of credit like he’s kind of I think he’s had a really good camp. I think he’s had a really good exhibition season. I think um um we haven’t forcefed him opportunity and he’s kind of continued to demand a little more opportunity and um that’s kind of the way you want it. And he’s been physical. He’s been a big power winger, but he also has soft hands and and can make plays and so you know he’s somebody who eventually could find his way up that lineup and and hopefully do a good job for us up there. It’s high praise for Colton Doc and uh for all the folks that are worried about like maybe not worried about but upset that Oliver Morris back in Rockford and Ryan Green was going to be and Kevin Cortinsky is there. He’s telling you right now like if a guy earns an opportunity, if a guy earns a job, I he’s not going to hesitate to promote them. He notices the hard work. He sees it paying off. And Colton Doc is a great example. And if you go through the Hawks organizational depth chart of prospects, Colton Doc is not really he’s probably towards the middle in terms of how they’re viewing the ceilings of these guys. I mean, he’s climbed for sure. Yeah. But I still think, you know, you would put, you know, Fondell and and and Blair and I would say Ma, you know, Mason West and and Nestrasil and like you gota you go through a lot of guys before you get to Colton Doc. But he’s showing like put in the work, perform in practice, perform in games, and you’re going to get your opportunities. And I think that any fear that they’re trying to go veteran to win games here is is completely misguided. They’re they want to reward the guys who are ready, protect the guys who are not, and then when they are ready, they’re going to be here. So, I like it. I like that Colton Doc’s getting rewarded. Yeah. And I I think, you know, he’s he’s a guy that that can play that power forward style and and I think that that power forward style um can benefit a player with the skill set and elite level abilities like Connor Bard has. And if he can open up some ice, give Barda even just a half inch of extra space can make a huge difference. So, and and again, Colton Doc too in his time in the AHL, not a big numbers guy, but he he did, you know, put up some decent offensive production numbers, was a, you know, producer uh in junior. So, he’s got that ability to him. It’s just not going to be his calling card at this level. But it’s not like you’re throwing out Ryan Reeves or something like it’s not just a guy who’s just going to go there be a wrecking ball and that’s all he’s going to do, right? And it’s a guy with some upside which I love. Uh let’s get into the counterbard part of things here. And I saw you put on Twitter uh earlier today some of the numbers behind the skating uh speed. We have a comment from Dying Breed Collectors who’s with us almost every show. We notice that. We appreciate it, buddy. Thank you. Dieards. Uh, he says, “Sorry if this has already been said, but my god, Bard looked so different last night. The way he drove the net was something I never saw the last two years. Really encouraging. He wanted the puck.” I agree with that. Like the attack mentality is there for Connor Bard. Uh, the willingness to shoot six shot attempts last night. Um, look, the Florida Panthers are a forcheing machine. Hard to beat that. Hard to get away from that. Um, but as these games go on and they’re playing against more ordinary opponents like Boston, like Montreal, like Seattle, who’s coming up, um, I think we’re going to see Connor Bard close to doubledigit shot attempts every night. And that’s where you want him to be. Yeah. I mean, we’ve been talking about for two years like about Bard needing to be more shoot first. Like, yeah, it was a headache in his rookie year and and last year when he was like, well, I’m I’m not just a scorer. I I can be a distributor, too. was just like, “Yes, but also you scored 71 freaking goals and 140 points in your draft year.” Like, go be that guy. Go be that guy that could that that has the thought of I have an elite level shot. I’m going to use it whenever I can. And and I think, you know, Jeff Blashel probably has a little bit more of a It’s not a Carolina Hurricanesque mentality of any shot’s a good shot. Yeah. Um, but I think it is a little bit more focused on if you have a look, don’t be afraid to take it. Don’t feel like you need to set up one perfect opportunity and be one and done. Like put the puck on net and and things will happen. I think we’ve seen that on the power play, but especially for Baddard, it’s just like when you got space, man, use it. Um, and he last night’s game he seemed a little bit more uh offensively motivated and and individual effort was was um a driving factor. And the speed that we’ve heard about all off season, all summer, we saw it in in training camp practices. We saw it uh in some of the preseason games. What was it going to look like when you get to a game that actually matters, especially against the Florida Panthers? we heard through the broadcast watching the game it was evident um it’s a new level of speed that that he is playing with and the numbers back it up in 60 what did he play 68 games uh his rookie season he had two bursts of uh speed of 22 miles per hour or faster according to the NHL edge uh data online last season zero pro bursts in 82 games of uh 22 muh per hour or better last night. Two bursts of 22 mph plus or better. Uh his max speed last night was clocked at 22.36 mph. His max speed reached last season 21.4 uh miles hour in change. So I think it’s very evident. The numbers back it up. The eye test backs it up. It’s it’s it’s a faster version of Conor Bernard. And that’s going to make a difference when you’re talking about last season some of those oddman rushes or those breakaway chances where he just didn’t have that extra gear to have that separation of speed. Um it seems like he’ll be able to have that this year, which unlocks an element of his game offensively. Defensively, being able to play at a faster speed allows you to get to pucks faster. If you can out uh skate your opponent to a puck, that’s a way to win win a a puck battle. When we talk about these things like winning battles, getting to the puck first is a way to do it rather than it’s a 50/50 battle and who’s the bigger guy, who’s the stronger guy. If you’re the faster guy, you’re going to get there first. So, we see that with Frank Nazar. We see that with, you know, Jason Dickinson when he’s fully healthy. He’s played with speed. I MCV plays with speed. Landon Slagger plays with speed. like those guys can be victorious in those battles by being the first there and and defensively with Bard. I know it’s again it’s not his calling card in the NHL, but it’s something that he’ll have to have that element in his game. Uh especially under Jeff Blash like being defensively uh engaged and being able to affect the game that way as well, not only offensively, having that speed is going to help him in his all-around game. I mean, I I I think on paper, on the ice, it was very evident. I talked to Ryan Donado about this last week because uh he is a guy who two summers ago added speed and it made a huge difference for him. And I basically what I was asking them is, have you seen a difference in counterbard? And he said yes. And I went on to say like, so when when you add that dimension of speed, is it something that you aside from look at me, I’m skating faster, right? Do you notice on the ice? He’s like, “Actually, sometimes you’ll have like you almost have because you’re faster, you have less time to decide than you’re used to. So, you kind of have to calibrate your brain to your own body’s speed, right? Like, I can get there faster or maybe like, you know, last year Conor Bernard reads a play, sees a puck going into a corner, and maybe a defenseman approaching it and saying, “You know what? I probably don’t have the speed to get there, so I’m going to head back and back check, you know, defend.” whereas now he’s going to have to learn like I do have the speed to get there now and win that puck. So th those adjustments are going to come in game and like Conor Bard can do all the practicing he wants to do in the offseason. He can skate through all those little twirly machines that he was skating through and all the mannequins he wants, but until, you know, Aaron and Seth Jones and those defenseman are standing in front of him trying to stop him, he’s not going to get a full feel for that speed difference. Uh but it was evident last night and I without even looking at the numbers you pulled up you could see it. It is not he is noticeably faster. The the computer boys and the eye test boys and and girls in the NHL handshake meme are are have to be Yeah. have to be in an agreement that yes, Conor Bernard is faster. and and talking about like the speed and playing with it. Uh revitalized elite defenseman Seth Jones now that he’s out of Chicago. Bard walked right past him. Yes, he did. He didn’t bury the chance, but he went right past that’s a guy that’s an an all-star. He’s been, you know, a top five Norris getter. He’s now a Stanley Cup champion. All Seth Jones, even though people want to hate on him, like he is that kind of defenseman. and Bedar went right around him like he’s going to be able to unlock that element in his game to play that style and getting his mind and his hands and his body up to, you know, getting used to being that fast is only going to unlock his offensive potential. And conversely, if you look at the same play, that’s what we’re talking about is maybe he because I think the reason he didn’t convert is he got in a little deep. He was a little too close to Babroski to really pick a spot. Yeah. He tried to go uh glove side on him. He’s a left left. Yeah, left catch goalie. He tried to go glove side on him and just didn’t have enough room to get it past the arm. So, if he activates that move a step sooner knowing he’s faster and it won’t take as long like it’s the it’s the math meme, you know? It’s the uh Yeah. Yeah. It’s it’s it’s him processing things. when you’ve gone through, you know, growth spurts in your life when you were younger and then you some people shoot up, you know, 6 in in a year and you’re like, “Oh my god, I’m knocking things off the counters cuz I don’t realize my arms are this long anymore.” Like you just you get used to your your body. Definitely. I would love to go through a growth spurt one time in my life. Give it time. Yeah, I know. Same here. Uh Brandon, I’ve been this size since I’m 13. Oh, yeah. That’s how tall I’ve been. I’ve been waiting to feel growing pains at some point. Um, Brandon in the chat mentioned uh Baddard’s lack of success on faceoffs yesterday. I just found this. Uh, it was his seventh time in his career with 10 plus faceoffs taken and it was the most ever in a game for him at 14. He’s only had 11. So, not only did he pass his career high in faceoffs taken, he was three over his career high. I don’t know if that really means anything or take away anything. Yeah, he was not good. The whole team was they were like 32% as a team last night. Uh but remember the preseason game against Detroit first game he won 70%. So yeah there it’s going to change game to game and you got to look at it big picture. Give it give it a few games before before you uh before we finally put a nail in the coffin of Bard’s bad at faceoffs. Move him to the wing or whatever. I know that I’ve had that opinion myself. Um, but I think give it a little bit of time, you know, working with Michael Pekka, working with this this new coaching staff, working on tricks of the trade, things like that. Being physically stronger is going to help. Bard not only is faster, so he’s stronger in his lower body. He’s also, I think, filling out more as he matures. He’s not 18 years old and trying to play against men, he’s now a man himself, I say. Um, so that strength at the faceoff dot can make a difference. Ultimately, if we get to 20 30 halfway through the season and he’s under 40% at the faceoff dot, then I think we we really have to get to the point of you’re giving it till 20 30 games. Oh, I was like 20 games 30 games. Let’s give it five more years, guys. No, 20 30 games, half of the season. If he’s at that point and it’s under 40% at the faceoff dot, then I think you have to finally say, “Let’s let’s move him to wing, give that a run.” Look at Anton Fondell. Yes. Played five games at center in Sweden and had like three points. He plays two games at wing in Sweden and he has five goals in those two games. Win 40%. I can live with it. It’s not apples to apples, but I think if we get to that point and we’re still having this discussion about his faceoffs, let’s let’s figure something else out. Some hockey news happened. Darren Drager announced and then uh Elliot Freriedman with the numbers, Jack Eel has been extended for 8 years, 13.5 million. And also earlier this morning, Kyle Connor, eightyear uh I think 12 and a half. Yeah. So, um, we’re gonna have, uh, more on on this stuff as it goes on, but, uh, McDavid, obviously, you know, the contract extension. Um, check out Friday, we’re off, but there will be a mini pod coming out. We’re going to talk about the contract extensions and uh the the new world order as it is with the rising salary caps in the NHL and how it’s going to change a lot of things. Yes. Um but I mean we at the beginning of this off season at at the beginning of training camp once the off season was over and you start looking forward to okay who’s the free agent class of next summer. Mhm. We had what, eight major forwards that were going to be free agents and I think four are already off the board with McDavid, Eel, Connor, uh, who’s the other one, uh, Capri off. Capri off. I I’m I’m not going to be shocked. I I know it was just like I’m sure some of these guys are going to get I’m not gonna be shocked if all of them sign. So yeah, you the the age of free agency in the NHL is is shifting. So we’re going to expand on that. Keep your eyes peeled uh uh on Friday for that mini pod, but it’s it’s changing. Yeah. All right, let’s talk about Alex Vlic’s return. Uh sounds like tomorrow Jeff Flash doesn’t want to tip his hand. Um but uh he said it, you heard it earlier in the show, 25 minutes too much for Samzel. unfair. Pointed a thumb at himself and the staff saying we can’t really put him in that sort of a situation night after night. Alex Vasa will come in and ease that burden on Samaranzelle a lot. I know they’re a pair, but it’ll take away some of the some of the some of the time there. Um, I don’t think that’s a recipe for success for as high as we are on San Renzel. Throwing him to the absolute wolves and saying go be Duncan Keith right away, right? Yeah. Is a lot to ask. Yeah. I I think pairing him with with Alex Velic I I’m not certain did if I remember correctly and I forget how to get the information quickly but did he get PK time last night Renzel? I am looking right now I believe so though. So I I obviously he’s he’s the defenseman on the top power play unit. Um you know playing with Vic. He’s he played 141 short-handed. Okay. So that’s an So I mean you add Velic into the mix because they weren’t playing Grizzlick on the PK. I don’t think they were. Grizzl was 14 seconds on the PK. Yeah. So they weren’t. Um you add Vic back into the mix. That’s a guy that you play on your PK that you can probably take that responsibility off of Sam Renzel. And yeah, maybe he still plays 20 minutes or so, but it doesn’t need to be he’s going to lead your team in ice time night after night. I think Velic’s going to be that guy that’s going to get the biggest chunk of five on five minutes. He’s going to get PK responsibilities and and that’s the guy you want to lean on. Not Sam Renzel. Not yet, at least. Well, I thought it was interesting. He is the only defenseman over 20 minutes. Renzel. Renzel in the entire game. The only other players over 20 were Frank Nazar at 2014 and Conor Bedard at 22 seconds or 22 minutes even. Yeah. So, lots of ice time for Nazar and Badard up front. But well, they had what? Four power plays. Yes. Yeah. So, I mean, when when you are the top power play guy, you’re and you’re going to get a minute and a half each power play on average. I’d say about a minute, minute and a half. And then if you’re playing on the PK as well, that adds up. You’re the top guy at five on five, that adds up as well. So, Sanzel is going to stay in that role. But I think having Vic is going to take a little bit, if not a significant amount of responsibility off his plate. I know he came in last season at the end of the year playing 23 minutes a night or whatever it averaged out to be and he had, you know, five assists and and and all that, but as Blashel said last night, um coming in and playing those nine games at the end of the season is a different animal than coming in and playing the opening night uh and having that same minutes responsibility. Yeah, a lot more pressure, uh, a lot more intensity, but yeah, look, I think he’s going to be able to handle big minutes. And I think 22 minutes a night, 23 minutes a night for Renzel is probably the expectation, but 25 plus is a lot. And like there are going to be games where he’s needed to do that for whatever reason. Like the fact that Lefches took uh two penalties in the game, cut into his, you know, cut into Lefaw’s minutes, probably added some to Renzel. Right. Right. So there’s a lot that goes into it. I just don’t want 2518 to be the routine game for San Renzel. I don’t think that’s a that’s probably not a great idea. Change the logo pointing out that Spencer Knight played at least 30 minutes last night. Well, his ice time is about 50 58 minutes a night. It’s a little bit different for goalies though. Um no, that’s funny. But a good I mean if you’re looking by the way at Renzel’s overall numbers finish even uh 2518 a shot uh six uh I’m sorry a shot six total shot attempts a hit a takeaway four block shots was credited with five giveaways uh that’s one more than left actually so that’ll get cleaned up those guys both of those guys I know a lot of the focus in the last you know 24 hours or whatever has been on Lev Shinov and his play, but Sam Renzel also went through struggles last night. And that’s what you’re going to get with with a lot of these young players. If it was Kevin Cinsky, Ethan Delmro obviously had had some rough spots. Like, that’s what you’re going to get uh this season with with a lot of these young guys is is those growing pains. Now, you hope that three three young defensemen each night don’t have to go through the same growing pains at the same time. You want them to get better. Yes. Um, but you want them to be able to grow from those and make sure that again as has been the theme so far to begin the season is make sure that those valleys are not uh as abundant and they’re not as deep. Like you want them to start getting shallower and getting less frequent. Well, and the spotlight is on Lefchov too because of where he was drafted and who he was drafted instead of. So there is already before he even put pulls over the Hawks jersey over his head for the first time there is already scrutiny on the pick. Saturday is going to be interesting. Yes it will. Saturday will be interesting when Ivan Demidov lines up for the Canadians and Arnard left for the Blackhawks. And I mean we’ve seen it once already and Demidov had a really good what do you have two assists in that game? Like two assists in the first period I think. Yeah. And looks great but you know he’s not here so move on. Speaking of Saturday Yeah. Uh we got some information about the red carpet event that’ll be happening ahead of the uh Blackhawks home opener against the Montreal Canadians. Uh the pregame festivities uh begin at 300 p.m. Yep. Outside the atrium on Madison Street. Uh the information that we got said over 50 Blackhawks alumni will be on hand uh in some way, shape, or form for the celebration, including but not limited to uh Chris Chelios, Jeremy Ronic, Denny Sevard, uh Brian Campbell, Adam Burrish, Cory Crawford, Eddie Ol, Pat Foley is going to MC the pregame ceremonies. Those start at 5:45, so be in your seats. Doors open at 4. Doors open at 4:00. you can start parking as early as 1:30, I think it was. So, um be uh be on the up and up with with all those details uh ahead of Saturday. The the red carpet event is always a lot of fun. Great opportunity for fans to get up and up close with the with the players and and it’s just it’s it’s a good it’s a good way to to start the season. Usually the vibes are are really high. Hopefully, we’re going into Saturday with a one and one record. That would be delightful. That would be really, really good. Alex Classic will be back tomorrow. So will we. 5:30 pregame uh games at 6, postgame immediately following the season’s here. We are rolling along. So we’ll talk to you tomorrow again. 5:30. And reminder, we are off on Friday, but look for that mini pod uh Friday morning. Should be fun. I I’m curious, by the way, about the red carpet. Who the most obscure Blackhawk will be? This is a game I want to play. Old World Hockey says, “Will Jim Cumins be there?” He might. Andrew Dejarden. Hey, he could sure. Maybe in Rico Jacone if Dustin Bufflin shows up. I’m taking off my meteor credential and that’s a shower and I’m trying to get a get get Dustin. Do you remember Vancouver? That was awesome. Yeah, it’ll be definitely the Chris Farley meme. All right, talk to you all tomorrow night at 5:30 for the pregame right here on CHGO Blackhawks podcast. [Applause] Man.

I’m all for Dach getting an opportunity. #28 doesn’t below there, but this is the hand Blashill was dealt—zero first-line help this past offseason, or the one prior, or the one prior…
I was saying this yesterday. You was one of the guys that stood out to me during the game
This is sort of when Q used to put Shaw on the top line totally unnecessary. Bedard needs talent on his line not a mucker. Put him with Nazar and if the opponent focuses its effort on that line so be it let them work through it. Until more talent arrives (Frondell, Sasha) where you can spread them out like Towes and Kane let them play together and let’s see some fun
Claiming we're going to see high energy out of Dach every single night is a pretty big stretch lol
No Tkachuk, No Barkov. Outshot 16-3 in 1st period. it's over, when is the draft?
How does Burakovsky play the role of "facilitator"? That man was invisible yesterday…only thing he facilitated was a line change, presumably
A note on something Mario saod about puck races. Its not about speed. Most races to the puck are actually a race for body position. Which is usually won by the bigger player.
Lol one game into the season, 3rd year now going into the unlock Bedards talent arc…
Until Frondell shows up , Bedard's linemates will be an issue
You can expect between 25 to 40 games. More being up there in that top line with Connor and Dach
Ah yes.. same issue Bedard has had.. incoming 60 line combos every year 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
Give Dach a 3 game tryout sure. Id put Mikheyev up instead. Conner and Donato proved they can shoot or pass as goals and assists last year were nearly the same. Just need a speedster to beat d-men to retrieve dump ins, with size to muscle pucks away in corners, ability to hold possession and distribute puck to linemates or trailing d-men, create space for Bedard and Donato. Mikheyev can score and developed some chemistry with Bedard last year. Oh BTW, can play defense as well.
Fill in hole in 3rd line with Burakowski and defense-first winger like Anderson, Greene, or a responsible vet like Foligno. Reduce 4th line to 10 minutes of ice time per game. Hawks don’t have enough talent right now for 4 lines. Dach, Lafferty, Reichel. (Greene should be in Rockford honing his skills to perhaps replace Dickenson at trade deadline or be 4th line center with a Nazer plan call-up in late November or December)..
