Is it normal to sing the Canadian anthem when the game is between 2 American teams? Seems odd for a game between Buffalo and Colorado

  1. Pretty sure only the Sabres do this because of their proximity to Canada and the large contingent of Canadians that watch games there.

  2. I don’t think I ever knew the Sabers did this. So used to hearing O Canada anyway that it probably just never phased me.

  3. It’s a North American League and most of the players, coaching staff and management is Canadian.

  4. That’s just Buffalo. They always sing O Canada before their games even when both teams are American.

  5. Detroit fan here, was in Buffalo for work so I went to the preseason game against Pittsburgh. I was grabbing a beer and heard O Canada and immediately had a feeling I wasn’t in the right place, the very kind bartender explained without me even asking lol. They do it for every game, I find it weird that they do and Detroit doesn’t.

  6. Why wouldn’t we? Us Buffalonians are so Northern American that we’re actually Southern Canadian.

  7. Meanwhile, as a Buffalonian, my first game I went to away from Buffalo I was confused when they didn’t sing O Canada.

  8. If memory serves they always play both anthems in buffalo because buffalo was on the border.

  9. Buffalo always performs the Canadian anthem? That is incredible. Thanks, Buffalo!

As Canadians we here the US anthem all the time since most of the league is American team anyways haha. I sing it just as loudly as the Canadian Anthem either way though.

  10. Just my take here but I think they should stop singing the national anthems at NHL games. Save it for the Olympics and 4 Nations cup.

  11. Is it normal to have this game on right now at 1:00 p.m.? I just checked my notifications and saw it going on right now. I thought it was glitching out from a game yesterday or something.

  12. Been a Sabres fan since late 70s. Been doing this for as long as I can remember. Always liked that they did it. 🇨🇦🇺🇸

  13. I didn’t know it was unusual, I just assumed they sang both anthems considering 40% of the league is Canadian

  14. Anthems aside…do you have your tv hung on the wall with plastic coat hangers and command strips?!? Impressive 🙂

  15. I didn’t realize this wasn’t the norm lol. Just figured since there’s so many Canadian players and the league is a mix of the two countries… turns out we’re just special in buffalo

  16. Grew up with. Now I’m realizing it’s odd for the rest of ya’ll. Which explains why I can sing the Canadian national anthem as well, if not, better than the Star Spangled Banner.

  17. It’s a ridiculous tradition that serves no purpose. Get rid of it. Why they feel the need to sing anything before a sporting event is beyond me.

“Hey remember the time we went to a concert and everyone stood for the national anthem before it started?” “Yeah, me neither.”
