BREAKING NEWS: Padres manager Mike Shildt announces his retirement after two seasons in San Diego
Now we got some breaking news as we’re here, live on MLB. Now, here’s the Padres. Thanking mike S thank you for many contributions, Padres organization, San Diego community. Mike wish you very the very best in your retirement. And again, Schultz saying that he’s retired from the Padres, which is different, Steve because the first thing that how old is Mike Schilt? He’s 57. Take it easy on the easy 57. You’re a spring chicken. It is surprising to me, I didn’t know there was friction, full disclosure, by the way, Jake Peavey is a special assistant to Padres group. So, so you know that we’ll ask jake, but first your thought, general thoughts on this happening. Yeah, surprised by it because what I saw him do is take a team that felt like they were sort of afloat over the last two years and, and galvanize them and bring them together. They played some really good baseball and look, they had some injuries down the stretch. Obviously, they lost Jason adam and, and Lorean in the postseason, hurt them a little bit, but I thought he did a really nice job. A lot of big personalities there , they didn’t hit a lot of home runs that they still won games. And so I thought he did an excellent job. Now, remember he was in Saint Louis previously and one of the , the word on the street Then was that there was a little bit of a class with the analytics with the front office and everything else. So my initial thought went to, I’m shocked by this, but I wonder does this mean that there was something that wasn’t working relationally in between the front office and himself and jake, former outstanding pitcher with the Padres. Now you’re still with the Padres. But what can you tell us? I’ll tell you he did a fabulous job during his time there. He got really close with peter Seidler as a special assistant and, and really understood the Padres of who they were and what they were about what they needed. He brought that to San Diego and again to delivered winning as he did in Saint Louis II, I do think Joe Maddon is on to something when he talks about how R and D in new school analytics match up with such an old school fundamentally based guy. It makes for tough conversations at times for you to jive and, and II, I know that there was probably some of that going on didn’t seem to be in his actual managing. He didn’t seem like he’s an incredible, he’s an incredible manager and, and for that baseball staff, they give the manager free rein and Schultes making the lineup and making the moves. And you just heard Joe Maddon, he makes incredible game management moves in that. And from what I know and what I did see, I thought he did a fabulous job and had this team poised and ready to win. He will find himself on his feet and get it even another opportunity. I live this right. So I the, the grind between the manager and the front office, I had Bobby Valentine and we, we had our clashes over the years and we won a lot of games together, but we clash a lot and when you keep going back and forth in and picking battles and fights throughout, it can wear you down and at some point it wears down the relationship to where you’re like, how many times do we have to go through this again? And so, you know, if there is that sort of debate going on at some point, it’s gotta be, look , this is kind of the way we’re doing it. I know you want to fight it and you’ll accept it for a long period of time as long as you’re winning. But you gotta think, are we gonna continue to win if we keep having these clashes? Skip Schumacher said, the biggest thing that they’ve got going in Texas is there’s cohesiveness from the top all the way through the players on the field. Brian Sabian and Bruce Bochy punched through up there. Kevin Towers and Bruce Bochy when I think about my time in Chicago, when Ozzie Ghan and Kenny couldn’t be in the same room there was, it was Bobby Cox John Sholes that link there, joe Torre, Brian Cashman, that link there and, and I will tell you it takes a chunk of flesh out of you every time you go through those battles to where it really ultimately starts to filter down. There are eight openings still out there. Don Kelly was, was, was kept on by Pittsburgh. Skip Schumacher takes over in Texas, but that’s a lot of openings, but you got it. It’s a more complicated process even bring about Bobby Valentine. There’s also a lot of combustible types, right? Guys who are also very bright who don’t like to hear other other, I should point out that dave Roberts and Pat Murphy, both interim managers in San Diego. San Diego, Mark Kay was also there. They’ve been looking and trying to get this seat right for many years.

Can we get him back in St Louis??? Please????
That is so unexpected
Hope they find a good replacement
Why can't we all just get a long neck bottle?
Didn't see that coming. I wish him the best in his future.
LOL….LFGDODGERS!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Wasn’t expecting to hear this.
Holy Shildt! Mike just quit his job outta nowhere
Machado and Tatis is the reason he is gone. I don't blame him. Cannot win in SD with this culture.
I didn’t expect this bt tbh im not surprised by it either the season is an up and down roller coaster and for some of these mangers it takes a toll on them especially for the OGs this has me thinking what direction do the Padres go from here do they bring back Bob Melvin or do they go with a younger up and coming manager like the White Sox did or a former player like the Rangers just did by hiring Skip Shoemaker or do they just promote within bc this is a roster thts ready to win made some huge trades to give themselves a chance bt this roster is a bit inconsistent as well how do they turn things around
