  1. Wow! That came outta no where. Back to back 90 win seasons and a very good roster coming back next season. Wish him the best and hope he enjoys retirement. 34 years of any profession is a lot, let alone high pressure of MLB Manager role. Hope the Padres fans take the high road here.

  2. Someone said the Padres managerial position is like the defense against dark arts position at Hogwarts

  3. Alright guess i’m gonna stop what i’m doing at work and freak out for a little bit

  4. Damn, I swear I just read an article about Shildt was for sure for next year and Preller was getting extended

  5. I’m genuinely floored. This came out of absolutely nowhere!!! I hope he’s doing OK, it seems pretty sudden to retire in the middle of your contract.

  6. This news definitely came out of nowhere. Can’t hate on Mike. Took the team to back to back playoff appearances and 90 win track record. Wish him the best and hope he enjoys retirement

  7. I liked Shildt as our manager a lot more than most in this sub seemed to, even acknowledging that his decision making became more questionable after the trade deadline.

Regardless, he has never been “the” problem with this team. Sounds like the job really took a toll on him. Hope he enjoys his retirement.

  8. what the fuck? man i hope he’s alright, i was really starting to love Schildt and his energy

man, feels like we can’t catch a break sometimes

  9. With two years left on his contract, and the back to back 90+ wins per season – I’m having a hard time seeing how he wasn’t forced out.

Usually when the top brass ‘retire’ it’s just corporate speak for getting the boot. Might have lost some internal struggle with the new ownership?

If his health really is the thing making him retire and it’s not a scapegoat, shildt if I ever see you at a bar, rounds on us.

  10. Enjoy retirement, had a good run as manager bringing us to the playoffs in both his seasons can’t go unappreciated

  11. I can’t believe it man. What the fuck. I hope Shildty’s okay and takes it easy during retirement.

  12. I liked him as our coach… his mannerism with the press… I’m sad he won’t be with us next year but I wish him nothing but the best with his retirement.

  13. What if we are doing this to bring in Bruce Bochy? He hasn’t announced his retirement just that he’s parted ways with texas..

  14. Even a manager worth keeping we can’t keep😭😭😭I know some of his decisions were questionable but did a great job the past two years

  15. In the corporate world, early exec retirement is often code for “we wanted to terminate this person, but we respect them and we want them to go out with dignity.” At his age of 57, unless it was god forbid health related, I highly doubt this was a retirement fully on Schildt’s terms. The question is why, and where we go from here.

  16. TIL I’m only four years younger than Shildt and yet he looks old enough to be my father, so I guess that tracks that the pressure got to him.
