The question of how Vlad Jr. stacks up against his Hall of Fame father at the same age sparked an incredible discussion among baseball fans. Through their first 7 seasons, the numbers tell a compelling story: Vlad Sr. accumulated 31.4 WAR compared to Jr.‘s 25.8, crushed 209 homers to Junior’s 183, stole 114 bases to Jr.‘s 26, and maintained a .322 batting average that dwarfs Junior’s .288. But the stats barely scratch the surface of what made Vladdy Sr. so special.

For those who watched both players, do you think Vlad Jr. still has time to catch up to his father’s legacy, or was Vlad Sr. just operating on a different level that we might never see again?

  1. Junior was a lousy defensive 3rd basemen (kid ATE as a child) though he’s a pretty good 1st Basemen.

Senior, was an elite defensive outfield diving on concreate, with one of the 10 best Arms in the OF of all time.

    He was so special defensively.

Junior could wind up surpassing his dad in home runs and war from simply just playing longer, since power ages better, he’s in an excellent park for mashing, is signed through his age 40 season, and can just DH later on.

But he won’t have a better average than his dad.

  2. it’s a weird article to be writing already. Jr hasnt even started the phase where we say ‘if he stays healthy and maintains consistent stats, is he a hall of famer?’ just let the man play

  3. Also, you’re numbers for Vlad are off.

Technically yes, those are his first 7 seasons, those numbers miss his *8th season with Montreal, but his *first season* was a cup of coffee he got playing all of 9 games. He didn’t even lose his rookie status.

If you just merge that in with his rookie year (the following year) you can take a look at his Montreal career, which gives him.

    34.7 bWAR 234HR 123SB .323BA

Had Junior not lost 2/3 of his 2020 campaign to Covid, it’s reasonable to think he could have gotten another 2+ war and 20 homeruns. But that doesn’t really close the gap much.
