  1. This is such a shock to my system

It’s gonna take me a while to process this too

I also wish Mike the best and hope his health improves in retirement

  2. He had his stumbles, but he stuck with these guys. He never wanted to blame others. He loved the team and he was always trying to win no matter what. Shildt was a great coach

  3. Wow! That came outta no where. Back to back 90 win seasons and a very good roster coming back next season. Wish him the best and hope he enjoys retirement. 34 years of any profession is a lot, let alone high pressure of MLB Manager role. Hope the Padres fans take the high road here.

  4. Shidty’s managerial style is intense, and I noticed that it wore on the players over time. I didn’t think about how it must be for Shildt.

  5. Really bummed to hear this. I am glad however, that he made the decision now in order to give the organization plenty of time to find our next skipper.

  6. Bummed to learn about the toll it took on him. I respect and appreciate his service to the club. Even if it was too short.

I’m really glad Shildt is content with the decision. This is probably the best you could ask for in terms of an end for everyone. Short of winning a WS ofc

Wish him all the best in his retirement.

    Thank you, Shildty! 🫔

  7. Oh, wow! I definitely did not expect that this morning. One thing about Shildt that I’ve always respected is that he seems to deeply care about his guys, and that really comes through in this message. But that can be really personally exhausting, too. Good on him for realizing when he needed to stop. Retiring at 57 sounds amazing.

  8. The whole teamā€˜s future is up in the air with Peter Seidlerā€˜s death and the family arguing over who now has the rights to the Padres.

I sure hope he (Schildt) is legitimately choosing to retire and not deciding this because the team’s immediate future is totally in question.

This is the greatest run the Padres have ever had. We’ve only ever had nine postseason appearances in Padres franchise history, and four of them have been in the last five years during THIS modern Padre era. I sure hope ownership doesn’t allow this opportunity for a championship to get away.

  9. I think this was fully on his terms. Makes no sense from a FO perspective to fire Shildt sfter delivering back to back 90 win seasons, and bringing the city of San Diego back to life with winning baseball.

Really really sucks to see. I had my differences with him but overall he was a great manager. It’s gonna be a long offseason so hoping for the best as always.

  10. We need a young, relatable manager now…fuck the old guys! We need energy! We need to call up someone from college baseball that can light a fucking fire!

  11. Wow, such a shock. I truly hope this is true and it was on his own terms, not scared off by management. Good dude and what a turnaround in culture that he oversaw the past couple years. Both teams were legitimately on the cusp.

For the replacement, I really hope Nie LA is at the top of the list to fleet up and replace him. Love how his mind works and the players seem to love him.

  12. It may just be weird wording but ā€œretiring from managing the Padresā€ raises my spidey senses that something is off

  13. just sounds like he was burnt out to the point of not enjoying it anymore, and worse, impacting his health. If that’s the case he’s making the right decision.

  14. I didn’t see this coming but I wish him the best. I can’t imagine what they go through… all those hours and days!

  15. Really hope Shildt finds peace off the diamond! Loved his demeanor and acumen as the skipper, enjoyed his time at the wheel as a fan.

Honestly, it is troubling in general to me our last 2 managers looked like they just had a nervous breakdown to end the season. I think that AJ clearly needs to make manager communication and support a higher priority, and our locker room leaders should soul search as well.

Part of me can’t help but think AJ found a way to give Shildt a soft exit based off questionable decisions down the stretch. I’d prob take even odds Shildt will be in a new uniform by March 2027
