DEBUT: Michael Misa’s NHL DREAM Becoming Reality | San Jose’s Line Juggling Ahead of Hurricanes

Michael Misa is set to make his NHL debut on Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes. What other changes are in the practice lines? You’re Locked on Sharks, your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Hello, welcome to Locked On Sharks, the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area. My name is JD Young, caretaker at the Reef, also the co-host of Locked On NHL. And today we’re going to be uh discussing Michael Misa making his debut, how the new line forward lines look. Uh we’re also gonna be talking about uh Shakir Mukmadulan not going to be in the lineup again as well as Colin Graph spoiler. Um plus Jack Thompson and Lucas Carlson clear waiverss and headed to the Barracuda. We’ll talk some Barracuda here at the end of the show. So, uh, before we get started though, do want to let you guys know today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Dial the FanDuel up now by visiting fanduel.com and win $300 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. All right, so uh let’s talk. Of course, Michael Misa uh has the the Sharks have announced that he’s expected or he is going to be making his NHL debut on Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes. So interesting like you we we know that the Sharks were going to kind of have the training wheels on right and had him out these you know it’s almost a week basically since he last played after you know playing in the preseason and they feel like they’re ready to go with Michael Misa here. So of course Misa the second overall pick in the NHL draft uh signed his ELC. he’s in that bucket uh just like Sam Dickinson where he either has to play in the NHL or he has to go back to the OHL. Uh there’s no in between for him. He can’t play. He’s not eligible to play in the AHL since he signed his ELC. He can’t go to college. That is kind of the world that we live in with Michael Misa. Um but we, you know, I I like I’ve said before, I think the Sharks are going to manage Michael Misa much like they did uh with Will Smith last year. And I think the beginning of the season is how kind of seeing that come to fruition with him uh you know being a healthy scratch for the first couple of games. So Misa though is expected to center uh the third line and you know Michael Misa like that’s that’s they want him to be the center right and that that is going to be his long-term you know eventually longterm will be the second line uh center but he’s going to be senting a line with Kersel Kersev and Dandria on the third line there so um I don’t mind this Dandria’s had a really great start to the season. Kersev has had some flashes here, but I think with this line there, there’s enough hardworking guys around Misa that you can kind of put him in a position to succeed. Um, and like Kersev, I think, has a skilled enough player where you can put again like you’re not, this isn’t the Luke Cunnins’s uh type. Poor Luke kind of gets, you know, dragged through the mud on this on the show. But this isn’t the like uh Kersha or like the the Gadro Cunning type of that we used to see with with Will Smith. I think you’re you do see a little bit of an upgrade here and especially the way again Phil Andrea has started the season and Kerschev has shown some flashes here and then Kersev is a former you know 50 point scorer in the NHL. So, I do think Misa though, I would wouldn’t be surprised if you know probably that like 14 minutes is probably the cap uh with him. I I’m sure he’ll probably get some some power play opportunities and stuff here as well. But, uh yes, Michael Misa will be making his NHL debut. Uh and his parents and brothers are here for it as well from via Shang Pang of San Jose Hockey Now. So, um, the lines were the four line. We’re going to talk about the four lines now and then we’ll kind of talk about the defense here in the second segment. But, um, Eklan, Celibbrini to Foley. So, the 70s line brought back together. Uh, there you have Jeff Skinner, Wenberg, and Smith. So, we split up Celbrini and Smith. Uh, Kerschef, Misa, Dandra as we talked about. And then Gdro, Godet, Reeves, Graph. And from the sound of it, it looks like Colin Graph is going to be uh the odd man out, at least when it kind of came to some of the the practice there. So, we’ll see. Uh I I’m not a big fan of of keeping Colin Graph out. I think uh he’s a very talented player who does a lot of things. I think he’s excellent on the PK and I think if you pull Colin Graph out, it’s going to make your PK worse. Um, but again, you got to keep the veterans in there for some reason, uh, because things that veterans do. But, um, as for like the top line, you know, we’ve seen this this line be successful before and especially after what we saw on Saturday’s game where the Sharks were heavily outplayed by the Ducks and especially that top line was was outshot heavily or shot attempts was outshot heavily. Um, you knew Ryan Warsovski was going to try to mix things up here a little bit and this is a line that has worked very effectively before and has played very well to start the season. Tofo has played pretty solidly as well. Um, and I think for getting Celabbrini with those guys as again Celibbrini I think is played really well last game but is might still be kind of knocking off a little bit of the rust from the preseason missing so much of the preseason. Um, so I like I don’t mind kind of putting this line together right now and then once everyone’s kind of fully uh kind of back in stride, you can put back Smith and Celebrin at any point. That’s the great thing, right? Is is the Sharks do have enough pieces in their top six where you can kind of mix and match it a little bit. Um, here especially beginning this season, you’re trying to try to find something that’s work working right now. So, um, but the second line’s really interesting to me because you do have Jeff Skinner who’s not known for his defense. You have Will Smith who not known for his defense. Uh, then you have Alex Wenberg who’s going to have to probably carry the defensive load on this this second line. Um, this line should have some opportunities to score, especially with Smith’s creativity and Wenberg and uh Skinner’s ability to get to the net. like I could see this this line is what is either going to get hemmed in its own zone uh or it’s going to create uh a lot of offensive opportunities and probably both things are going to happen in a game, right? But uh this feels very much like a there there’s no in between with this line. This is a uh we’re stuck in the zone for 90 seconds or uh we are just controlling the pace for 90 seconds type of of performance. So um but I I I’m curious. I want to see how it works. Uh, here. So, um, and then like I said with the third line, I think Mis is going to be in a spot. Wouldn’t be surprised if Wenberg or Celibbrini if Celebrity potentially double shifting there if they want to give uh, Misa a little bit of a break. Um, because Cbr is a freak of nature. Um, and again, like we we saw with Sam Dickinson, right? I know it’s a little bit different with defenseman, but um, kind of easing them into it. like I’m I’m still probably going to be at like 14 minutes for me. I just I it’s hard for me to imagine Misa playing more than that to be honest and especially if it’s a close game. If if the Hurricanes kind of you know jump out to an early like a massive lead early then Misa might just get they might just roll lines just to get Misa experience there. So that could easily be it but um and then Goodrodet Reeves it is what it is. Um, again, I still like to see Godette play a little bit more, but kind of is what it is with that line. So, uh, and Reeves has Reeves and Good Goddet have both been very good to start the season. So, uh, and Barkley Goodro is Barkley Goodro. So, uh, we’ll see. You know, again, we’re we’re we’re getting closer. I feel like we’re we’re starting to get closer. And, um, you know, spoiler, Sam Dickinson. Looks like Sam Dickinson is going to be playing again. We’re gonna have four players who are 20 and under in this game. Like between uh Will Smith who’s 20. Uh Dickinson and Celebr are both 19 and Michael Misa who’s 18. We’re going to have four players who are uh 20 and under in this game. Uh old man William Ecklan who’s 23 now. Uh yes, get him a Walker or something. It is uh yeah, the future’s now old man. But um yeah, we’ll see. We’ll see how the Ford lines perform. So, uh, we’re going to talk about Muka Madullan, uh, not being in the lineup. We’re going to look at the defensive lines, uh, again, just complain a little bit about like we’re getting close to it. So, plus, uh, we’ll catch up with the Barracuda as they get two, uh, defensive reinforcements. So, we’ll get to all that here in just one second. The NFL season is here and FanDuel is an offer you don’t want to miss. Right now, new customers can bet just $5, get $300 in bonus bets. Uh so make sure you guys are following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. So, the defense, we’ve we’ve talked coming out of Saturday’s game, we we’ve spent a lot of time talking about the defense, and the hope was we would see some changes, and we’ve seen a little bit of changes. Uh, so from Shang Pang of San Jose Hockey. Now, uh, the defense, Mario Faroh with Orv. Okay, I can I can see that. Um, Lety with Lilrin. Okay. Dickinson with Clingberg and then Muka Madul with Dones. So, looks like Mukadull and Dones will be scratched um for Tuesday’s game. Um and we just spent yesterday talking about how Muk Madulan helps like kind of helps to answer some of the questions on this team and what uh that they have problems with, right? especially on the the penalty kill where you’re you’re putting John Clingberg out there in a position where you know John Clingberg shouldn’t really be on your penalty kill. Uh and Muka Madullan who’s a big guy in front of the net and is pretty strong and can help kind of tie up guys like Muka Madillan is going to have a better opportunity to succeed in that role on the PK where you spend two minutes for the most part in front of your own net. So, um, and right, we know Worski is going to give the veterans a benefit of the doubt and to right like Lety and Clingberg and Orlav like they’re going to get first opportunities and they’re going to get a longer leash because they’re veterans and what they’ve done in the NHL, etc., etc. Um it’s just it’s like you’re you’re so close to kind of cracking this thing right for Warsovski. Um again like I don’t expect Dickinson to play every game. Um, and I’m actually a little surprised if Dickinson is going to be in this game, especially with, you know, playing a team like the Carolina Hurricanes who can uh uh definitely uh, you know, cause a lot of chaos. Um, also Worski says Smith is dealing with a lower body issue. Should play tomorrow, but something has been dealing with since before Saturday’s game. Just that’s per Shank Pang. Uh, so line of isn’t set in stone, but he confirms Misa and Dickson are playing good. Um, but back to my original thought. Uh, it’s just it feels like you’re so close to kind of unlocking this thing. Like you have all the pieces there, right? the jigsaw puzzle’s there and you’re you’re still kind of trying to put all the pieces together, but um like at some point you you have to you have to give Mukum another chance to get back into the lineup and fix whatever he did wrong from uh the first game. And yes, he made some mistakes, right? And yes, he also got two assists in that game. Um, and but you know, like how do you how do you pull Muka Madan from the game? Muk Madan from, you know, from the lineup and then let John Clingberg make a ton of mistakes uh that he made in in the seven to six loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Right. It’s just that’s the frustrating part where the accountability isn’t the same. And yes, like I I right, you’re again, you’re gonna give the vets a longer leash, etc., etc., but it’s just a bad look, man. Like you talk about competing and accountability and all these things. And um Clingberg was was a big reason why the Sharks lost that game. uh because of his again there’s two tie-ups that like he has to make those like he has to do more in front of his own net to keep the opposing team from scoring and maybe you just don’t put him in that position right you know what Clingberg is there to run the power play and to drive offense and putting him in that position of being on the penalty kill not a great thing Right. Just it’s I I feel like we’re going to get there soon. Like we’re going like especially if the Sharks keep losing these like heartbreaking games and keeps losing to start the season. We’re going to get there to the point where Wars is just going be like we have to play these younger guys because or Greer is going to tell him you have to play the younger guys. Uh because they like if you’re going to lose you might as well lose and figure out what you have with these young players. But right now the season’s new still like the restructurers are the courts are trying to win. They’re always trying to win. But um it’s just frustrating when you’re it doesn’t feel like you’re icing your best lineup here. Um, and especially with Muk McDullan who had such a great start to the season and or starts a starts uh, sorry, had such a great end to last season and such a great preseason and he has one okayish game uh, and then he gets pulled from the lineup and it looks like it’s it’s a tougher road for him to get back in the lineup unfortunately. So, and the same thing with Colin Graph, right? like graph is like has a very specific role like he is you see the hockey smarts you see the intelligence you see uh like what he does on the PK he makes the PK more dynamic right and creating opportunities and being aggressive and he’s such a smart player he he’s all that’s from the moment I first time I watch the thing that is like he the puck always finds him because of his ability to read the play and see where the puck’s going to be and to know where to be at the right place at the right time. And that is a very helpful tool to have on your penalty kill to know where the puck is going to be and be able to end like there. And um it’s again, it’s very frustrating to see uh you have all the pieces there, but you’re just not quite putting the puzzle together, unfortunately. though uh for both these players because again uh who’s going to be here hopefully in two or three years when this team is good and and you know hope getting into the playoffs and stuff uh Colin Graph or Barkley Goodro right or Shakir Muk Madulan or Nick Lei which of these players are going to be here like yes I know you’re trying to win now but you have to keep the the the pick the big time picture in in mind as well And I would rather go down swinging with these young players as they learn and gain valuable experience. That way when you get to these big time moments later in their careers, they’ve kind of gone through it a little bit more. So anyway, we’ll see. Not it’s you have the pieces right there. So, uh, speaking of other pieces, uh, Lucas Carlson, Jack Thompson, uh, heading to the Barracuda, uh, and should be big-time additions for what I think is going to be a really fun Barracuda team. Uh, so we’ll talk about that here in just one second. Most people can’t name all their financial accounts or even what they’re worth, whether it’s their 401ks, properties, or investments. Find NHL game night on Locked on NHL on YouTube, wherever you listen to podcast. So, uh, our long national nightmare is over as, uh, Lucas Carlson and Jack Thompson both go unclaimed, uh, and are sent to, uh, the San Jose Barracuda. And like, I get the, you know, the angst about putting guys like Jack Thompson on waiverss, uh, because you feel like he’s going to get claimed, but we, we kind of do the same song and dance every year. And you have to remember, right, the San Jose Sharks are the worst team in the NHL. Um, and usually when you’re the worst team in the NHL, teams don’t typically grab players from your organization because, uh, you’re the worst team in the NHL and they feel like they can get better players elsewhere. So, um, the Sharks, you know, like probably like if it was Jack Thompson was on the waiverss and the Sharks were eligible to claim him, like that feels like a move that the Sharks probably would have been smart to make. But um one GMs are cowards and they typically don’t want to kind of ruffle the feathers because uh there’s always that well you did it to me and so I’m going to turn around and do it to you at some point. So usually stuff like this does tend to kind of slide even with players who probably should be in the NHL like Jack Thompson. But um the Sharks did get both of them down. So this is two huge additions for the San Jose Barracuda. Uh who won their first game 7 to6. Uh that was a lot of goals coming out of San Jose on Saturday. uh who yeah they won their first game against the Bakersfield Condors and um was a very fun exciting game but uh when you give up six goals the defense was a bit shaky as you would expect when again you have a lot of new pieces kind of coming into place right um on the blue line like Matias Havl Cole Clayton um these are new players to San Jose and it’s going to take a little bit of time to kind of get them in you know up to speed. Um, but getting two guys who’ve been here last year, you know, Lucas Carlson is a longtime veteran, who’s played a lot of of games in the AHL, and Jack Thompson, who’s um, you know, a tweener right now between the NHL and the AHL. These should be big-time additions and give the Barracuda some more flexibility and some more insurance. Uh, so that way when you do have to start making call-ups, looking at you, Luca Kenyon, or you Jack Thompson, it just gives you a little bit more guys to kind of work with here. So, um, but yeah, with with the the Barracuda, like just kind of a quick, you know, reaction from Saturday’s game, but um, the young players doing exactly what you wanted to see, right? Uh, Cam Lun AHL debut, three assists in that game. Uh Quinton Musty uh a goal and an assist in that game. Igor Shernishoff was an absolute monster with the exception of one play, one play where he uh gets caught flatfooted on the penalty kill. Uh and he tries to keep a puck in and it just does not go well for him uh there. But like you sure off having a strong game like all the young players and even kind of quote unquote veterans and like Phil Beaststead uh and Ethan Cardwell like Beaststead had a monster of a game in in this performance here. Um all all the offensive pieces really looked strong and the Cuda really like they they were able to ring up a lot of goals very quickly in this game. And I do think the offense like the offense is not going to be as consistent as it was last year as you’d expect when you have so many young players, but uh it does have potential to be dynamic at times with all these young guys uh in the lineup here. And I think getting some defensive pieces like Jack Thompson and like Lucas Carlson, both who can kind of settle things down a little bit more, um I think it’s going to go a long way to help out, you know, Jacob Sharick, who I thought played pretty well despite giving up six goals. Like as crazy as it sounds, it was just it was just a track meet. Like this game was an absolute track meet. felt bad for the goalies because um like Garrick made some solid saves in this game, but it was like he was hung out to dry a couple times as well. And uh it’s it’s just early season hockey right now as everyone’s still kind of getting their bearings and getting the systems in place and and getting all their pieces back uh right now. But like this Barracuda team is going to be really fun. Do I think their ceiling is as high as it was last year with with you know Ascarav and Potterski? No, but I still think this uh this team can play with anybody on any given night. And I think this team can be very good and should have uh playoff aspirations because you have a lot of young talented players on this team, right? Um like I said, a musty musty look continued what we saw from the preseason. Uh his goal was like a you know, get to the front of the net type of thing. And uh Sherv, who loves those back door passes, right? If you watch Sagen at all last year with Shernov, you saw how great he was at getting Misa the uh the puck on these back door plays. He did it just picked up where it was instead of Misa just put Quinton Musty and that’s what you got, right? Um and Luka Canon, Luka Canyon is really good at hockey. like he’s extremely good at hockey and uh if the Sharks defense continues to play at the pace that it’s at uh and Luka Canyone continues to do Luka Canyone things, it’s not going to be long before Mike Greer is going to have to make a hard decision about uh his blue line and if somebody is keeping Luca Canon from an NHL job uh because Luca Canyone again very good at hockey. So, um, that’s going to be it for me today. We’ll be back tomorrow. So, we’ll, of course, we’ll have a kind of 10-minute preview episode that’ll go up early afternoon on YouTube only. So, we’ll with those we break down, you know, uh we’ll break down the Sharks versus the Hurricanes, kind of get to know the Hurricanes a little bit more, look at the lines, plus uh what you need to know, what you should be watching for in the game, and then we’ll of course, always, as always, have a uh reaction to the Sharks versus Canes on Tuesday night. Later on this week, like I said, we’ll probably be diving into the prospect reef. Uh looking at some of the uh Sharks prospects who I’ve been watching uh to start this season, uh including Hi Wang, uh Hi Wong, who’s had a really great start. Looks like a different player than what I watched last year. So yeah, we’ll be talking about some of these uh Young Sharks prospects and uh so make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcasts and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. Follow the show on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and on Tik Tok at Lockdown Sharks. Follow me on Twitter and Blue Sky Fryhole. Uh, until tomorrow. Bye, friends.

  1. Sitting Muk & Graf while playing Leddy, Klingberg, Reaves, & Goodrow is just stupid to me. I hate that the vets are held to a lower standard than the young players. I am so fed up of the coaches/ GM playing subpar vets over young prospects who are better now & in the future.

  2. Warsofsky does not like younger players beyond Mack. The vets never are held accountable for their actions. He doesn’t know how to develop young players (Smith got better because he played with better players, not because he was brought along slowly)

  3. I’m actually kinda concerned about Warso being so mixed up on his priorities. These veterans are not his friends and they’ll all be gone in a few months.

  4. Those D lines sound terrible. With all due respect to the veterans I believe they should have a shorter lease than the younger players. They are veterans so they've been here and know the job. If their bodies can no longer do the job based on the length of the career then there isn't any improving in their game. On the flip side the young are still learning the job so the mistakes made should be more easily corrected.
