Jake Oettinger, Thomas Harley, Wyatt Johnston & Glen Gulutzan Recap Dallas Stars SO Win vs. Colorado
two games, you know, I we talked about you guys learned a lot the first game. What’ you learn in this one? Yeah, I think just similar similar stuff. Like I think um you know, we had great stretches and then sometimes just you know, letting them back in for for no reason. So I think uh that’s the nice part about playing two of the best teams in the league. You know, the first two games of the year is they kind of show you where you’re at and you know, we got a lot of stuff to work on and get better at. just proud to, you know, go into two hard buildings and get two wins against two great teams. How did you feel? Were you seeing the puck? Well, what what was the reason for your success that you saw? Yeah, I think I mean did some stuff well. Did some stuff that I want to clean up and just um you know, this is like one of the best buildings to play in. I It feels like a playoff game no matter what when you’re in here. So, get to play against you know, some of the best players on the planet, try to elevate your game and you know, I I did that tonight which was fun. as you get to the end of a game and you get overtime and you get a show, does that also add to what you guys are learning early in the season? Yeah, you just want to, you know, once you get to OT, it’s just like let’s just have some fun and and try to score. So, um yeah, just proud of the guys and um you know, had some big big goals in the shootout and uh fun to come out of here with a win. Is there anything you guys are learning about the tweaks you you’re making? Like is this kind of expected to have some chaos and things like that early on with the defensive system? Yeah, I think I mean for like I don’t want to speak for the guys, but I think when you you know play the same play away for you know three years then it’s it’s kind of ingrained in you. So you know I think that’ll just take time for for guys to do it instinctually. But um you know I think just you know the things that goalies harps on um you know just I couldn’t agree more with and just I mean blocking shots you know sticking up for the goalie you know guys fight step up um you know so the stuff that he’s been been harping on has been awesome and um you know it’s been really fun to play for him so far. I know it didn’t count in the end but what do you think seeing Scott standing behind that Edwin Robertson’s shot goes in? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I feel like I’ve watched those two do breakaways against each other more than like anything on the planet. So, it’s uh those guys have a good little rivalry going. So, uh you know, I’m sure I’m sure Ro will be tripping. That’s for sure. So, is there a transition for you when you go from overtime to shoot out, you know, like anything you do mentally? No, I think just like I’m just trying to have fun. It’s such a, you know, it’s your time to shine kind of. So, it’s uh you know, it’s great to step up tonight and uh you know, I just wish OT was like 5 minutes longer. That would be a lot more fun, but maybe in a few years. Chaos, it seems like. Uh yeah, different types of chaos between the two games. Um tonight was kind of like holding back an avalanche. Um but glad we got 29 back there to bail us out. Um we’ll take the two points obviously. Um, but there’s some things we got to clean up and do better. Do you know when Jake’s on his game? I mean, it just seemed like every night it seemed that way. Every night he’s coming to play. How much of this do you guys attribute to the changes that you’re making defensively? Like it’s going to take time. Glenn’s even said that. Yeah, it’s going to take time, but I think we expect more of ourselves than that. Um they pretty thoroughly outplayed us and we have to do a better job of breaking the puck out for checking and just kind of making smart decisions. When you got opportunities, it seems like you made smart plays, sent people to the net. These are things Glenn talks to us about. You know that it is simple, but I mean when you got opportunities, you took advantage of. Yeah, we have some some skilled forwards in this room that can that can put some goals on the back of the net. And thank goodness that they put him in there tonight. What was it like facing Scott Wedgewood when you I know you’ve done it before, but it just seems like a couple of players were very hyped up to try and score. Yeah, it was a little extra when we play Wedgie. Um, so that was my first one against him, so I was happy about that. But, uh, Robo has his number, which is funny. You expecting that pass from Mo? Uh, not really. and um just kind of floating in some open space and I don’t know, he just threw it there and thank goodness I I hit it hard. Have you guys noticed some more creativity? It just seems like you’re making some more plays more freely than me. Um I think so. Um go’s freed us up a little bit to a little bit more road hockey I think as he calls it. Um so that’s just a little more freelancing just kind of making reads playing hockey out there and a little less uh robotic. Since we got you here, what have you seen from Nells? Two really good games for him. Um, he’s been great. Um, it starts with his defense. He’s he’s very solid back there. Um, and then offensively, we’ve always known he could make plays for the puck. So, as long as we’re defending well, we’re going to have uh we’re going to have the puck and play make some good plays. I think the biggest thing is that, you know, we need to get to another level. I mean, they took it to us for a lot of that game and so it’s obviously awesome to come out with a win, but you know, I think we can be, you know, a little bit happier with our game overall. Do you need to do you see that you if you stick with it, you can make plays as a team and and it doesn’t matter what the shots on goal are, you can just, you know, find a way. Yeah, absolutely. Um, you know, we’re a great team. We got great players. We can make plays. We can see the ice really well. Um, and so, you know, I think it’s really important to, you know, find a really good balance of making plays and also, you know, making the smart play. So, um, yeah, I mean, two games in the year, you know, there’s we got a long ways to go. It’s it’s too early, but, um, yeah, I mean, definitely good to start with two wins. I know it’s been a year now, but what’s it like playing against Scott Wedgewood, especially for you getting a threequarter ice breakaway on him? Yeah. Um, it’s good. I mean, you know, he’s obviously great goalie. Um, you know, we all we all loved him here. Um, you know, treated me really really well. So, um, you know, it’s definitely fun to, you know, compete against, you know, especially a goalie you know, and someone, you know, you’ve you’ve shown on a ton ton of times. So, um, yeah, just fun fun competing, especially against, you know, someone you know pretty well. Think you were on the ice. Did you have any clue what was going on when that Robertson puck went off the boards and in? Uh, I was kind of circling back. I was um yeah, I didn’t really see a whole lot of it, but I mean, yeah, kind of wild. Would have been nice if it counted, but um yeah, weird weird play for sure. What about Jake? Obviously just came up with several huge plays, especially in the late going overtime, all Yeah. Yeah, he was unbelievable. Um yeah, I mean, I think everyone knows by now how good he is and um you know, he showed it tonight. Just an amazing goalie. What’s going through your mind? You blocked that shot on Taves and then you’re coming in on the breakaway. Like, are you thinking what am I going to do? Are you looking at what he’s doing? Um, honestly, I was worried my stick was broken. So, I was I knew I wasn’t going to shoot. I knew I was going to de. And so, that’s kind of my go-to de if I’m not going to shoot. Usually, I like to shoot on breakaways and situations like that, but I I don’t know. I had no clue if my stick was still in good shape. So, um, lucky enough it was, but, um, yeah, I kind of just tried to make a move, not have to put too much pressure on my stick. We We learned we have to get better. We were outplayed. Um, listen, I’m just going to state the obvious here. I don’t know if I’ve seen a goalie performance like that since Jakeer against Calgary. At some point, I was watching him play a game like that. Uh, and I thought, “Wow.” And and and that’s what I think tonight. He stole us the game. Plain and simple. He stole us the game. And there’s no there’s probably nothing else to talk about uh personnel-wise other than that. Is there something to be said for going into two tough barns like this and coming out with four points? Yeah, you know, as a coach though, this this one leaves a little sour taste in your mouth, but you know, you got to look at it I’m trying to look at it this way. I told the guys after the game is um you know, there’s growth that has to take place here. Um you know, you can’t be in your zone that much and and and get out. You know, basically we lost a lot of battles. A lot of battles. And uh when you do that, there’s no system that can protect you. You know, even though I thought, you know, system-wise, you know, our Dzone we uh we held in there, but you know, we have to do a whole whole bunch of things better. And I said earlier, this is a growth game and and we need to grow from it because we need to we need to get better. What’s your approach when you see the game going like that? You mentioned you’re getting out late. Is there anything you do to kind of try to reel that in? Stay calm. stay calm because uh you know if you and that’s what I’ve learned over the years is that you know if you start to hyperventilate on the bench and and get all crazy and uh it gets worse. Uh so at the end of the day just stay calm, keep telling the guys we we got to you know well we got to get playing. We got to get playing. We you know things you can do adjustments and um but that’s what I’ve learned. just just stay calm and uh um you know we ended up getting some points today but yeah again there’s there’s growth that needs to take place in addition to Jake there were a couple little things Bastion gets his goal going to the net and Kovian with the fight to you know support uh group so just things that you for yeah no I um you know if you look at that second period our sec our supposedly fourth line with fax and bass they get a goal but they also get a faceoff that gets a goal they they ham them in, he gets a goal. So they they were part of two goals really and uh they actually had three good shifts to kind of change the momentum a little bit. Um so um that’s important. That’s important and we needed uh probably more of that from more guys, but um you know there there are some spots there that that helped out, but again it’s a growth game. How have you felt about that physicality you wanted? At least from our perspective, it looks like a more physical team. Oh yeah. Yeah. We’re uh you know, we’re battling, right? And we we talk about it all the time and you look at Ritzy tonight and you look at you know I look at the block shots, you know, we’re talking grid in it a different different way. You know, finishing checks, blocking shots, sticking up for one another, you know, rallying around and I I I think it’s there. Uh I think it’s there. And uh but tonight it was our goalie Hey.
