Hughes, Sherwood, Lankinen, DeBrusk & Adam Foote Post-Game Media | Canucks vs. Blues (Oct 13, 2025)

Uh, it’s a good question. Probably just make more plays. Um, I don’t know. It’s fresh. Cut off the ice five minutes ago. Uh, obviously not the result we wanted. So, definitely have to change change some things up. What have you seen from the special team so far this season? The penalty kills obviously been great, but a little bit more than the power play. Yeah, I mean PK I don’t know how many kills they have, but one for 11. Uh, pretty good. And be nice to see the power play get a goal. Was there something in particular that was happening on the side that was frustrating you guys tonight? Um, I don’t know. I mean, I think they’re a good team and they’re just making a lot of plays and and we probably weren’t um, you know, matching that. What more can you do to generate a little more? I mean, um, it’s a good question. I don’t know. Does it does it feel like a a bit of a question mark right now or is there something that you’re trying to do more of and it’s just not shown up yet? Um, I mean, if I had the answer, you know, I would have capitalized on had a goal and assist, but I don’t know. So, why the breakups such a problem? I don’t know. Just probably need more communication. Yeah, I think we got to be ready from the puck drop. It’s uh probably constant theme here. And um, you know, I think it starts, I think, with our just same structure in our systems and and from there just executing our passes. you know, when we don’t execute, then we’re chasing and then we lose possession and we got to work twice as hard to get it back. So, um, you know, we know they’re a rush team and we just, uh, we gave too many looks tonight. You’re a guy that has a high work rate that lead to a lot of your offense. Is there enough of that? Yeah, I mean, it’s it’s just, you know, um, like we we have a good group here. It’s it’s obviously not the ideal start, but, you know, um, it’ll it’ll prove our character. You know, we have a lot of good leaders in here and um, a lot of world class talent. So, um, we’re we just got to put our head down and work and and be ready from puck drop and have a full 60 minutes. Your mind so good tonight? Uh, just we’re just playing simple, just get in on the for check, getting sticks back, stick on puck, and then um from there just creating turnovers and um then allows the plays to kind of open up, but it’s just generating possession on the for check. Why are the Why were the breakouts such a problem tonight? I know they teams 10:00 the neutral zone, but it’s got to be more than that. I don’t know. I don’t know. It’s uh I’m sure we’ll we’ll work on that, but um yeah, you know, we have a big road trip coming up here, so we got to just buckle down and and get back to work. This practice coach talked about it this morning. Practice time is there is no practice time in that schedule. Is that a problem? Uh everyone has the same schedule, so there’s no excuse, right? Like we got to we got to be we got to buckle in and just put our work boots on and um you know, get after it. How frustrating is it a couple of times you guys as a group get a goal to battle back within one and they seem to answer pretty quick and how important is it to continue that momentum after you get a goal when you’re chasing the game? Yeah, I mean the game’s uh a game of momentum and and energy shifts and you know we got to value that and value that like you know a shift after uh a couple shifts after a goal is important for both sides whether it’s against or for and you know we’re getting really good efforts from our goalending so we we owe it to them to kind of be better defensively and then the rest will take care of itself. Can you talk about the what you’ve seen out of the penalty kill so far this season? Yeah, for you know, we’re we’re pretty we’re pretty structured. Um, you know, I think it’s a testament to our D. We have a long D here and um they they have a lot of good reads and they’re big big um keys for us down the stretch. So, forwards kind of read off of them and once we take care of uh um you know the seams and stuff, it kind of allows the pressure to kind of take care of itself. Is that success on the PK something that can kind of build out to the rest of of the team’s game? For sure. Sure. I mean, power player PK are chances for momentum uh shifts and energy. So, um our PK takes pride in uh trying to get that momentum back after a kill and you know, from there we keep rolling. Can you take us through your the short handle? Uh just um yeah, we just good pressure and uh kind of forced them to make a bad pass and I think Fowler was uh just bobbled it and uh then we just kind of off to the races and kind of you know, just get after it, I guess. Read Bington. Read Bington pretty well there. Uh yeah, I mean he’s he’s I know we play against each other a lot so I feel like uh just try to get pucks in the net and kind of try to create looks. Yeah. Yeah. Obviously not the not the result we wanted but uh yeah a lot to build on. Uh long summer behind put in a lot of work. I’ve been I’ve been feeling better than ever and had a great camp and couple good preseason games. So got to keep building. From your perspective what was just missing tonight? I can just speak from my own my own side here. I think I could have probably stopped one or one or two of those goals to help it win, but um like I said, we’re just going to keep building. A lot of scrambly play in front of you tonight. Is that just part and parcel of early in the season like game three going to have a lot of loose play? H I think that’s just NHL right there like guys crashing the net. A lot of goals are scored from from the blue paint and and uh the 5 meter radius right there. So just got to got to find ways to stop those pucks. keeper was just saying that goalies and the defense have been the key to the penalty kill so far this season. What have you seen in front of you in terms of the PK? Yeah, I’m I’m really proud of the guys like even building leading from last year we had a had a great PK and we’ve been building from that just great decor and then guys are buying in the forwards are doing a great job and and uh even Kefir tonight showed some some um offense from there so that’s huge for us. Is the road trip an opportunity for the guys to sort of come together and and get on the same page and get those results booked around here? Yeah, 100%. I I think we got to practice a couple good practices here and then be ready to go again. What about your overall play? You saw some pretty high in scoring chances at your Yeah, it was all right. Um obviously I I wish I could have stopped one or two more pucks to give the team a better chance to win, but um a lot to a lot to build on and uh always moving forward. Nice to get the first one out of the way. Yeah. Yeah, a little bit, but uh obviously not the result we wanted. There’s so much work in the offse and his staff about building up the culture and building up the leadership. Is is now a time like we’re only three games in, but the last couple have I’m sure gone the way that you guys play. Now’s the time that gets tested a little bit like just to as a team, how do you come out of this? How do you start to play better? I think it’s tested every single night in this league. there’s no no easy nights, no easy games. So, we just got to show up every single night and not just game days, but practices as well and and keep building this this system, this team that we have here. So, uh got to got to get back to work tomorrow. Um it’s good to see um some guys step up in that that way and hopefully they can keep it going. But I look at that as every line, every guy can do that. It’s it’s not rocket science. You just support each other uh make the right play when it’s there and and get pucks to the net. And um they got rewarded for it and good for them. Yeah, I mean, um, yeah, it’s been it’s been frustrating, um, for me and, um, I think for everyone on the line, obviously, um, those two guys are really great players and, um, they’re probably used to having the puck a lot more on their stick and so am I. I’m used to shooting it. Um, but in saying that, um, I think I said earlier, we got to just as a team, I think in general got to play, uh, a little more north, south, and a little more simple. You know, it’s not pretty right now. Uh, you look at the goals around the league, even some of the goals tonight, um, it’s smuck. So, we got to we got to get there. Just myself personally, I got to um find a way to be better at that. Adam, just uh start with your thoughts on the way the game unfolded for your group tonight. Yeah, we uh again in the second period, we got that shorty and we went down and they got got an rush on us, you know, and we got ourselves right back in the game and then we we pressed a little bit, didn’t have that F3, and you know, we fought back hard to try to get our get it close and it just didn’t happen. You mixed up your top six in the second half of the game. What were you looking for from that group and what do you need to see from them going forward? Just try just trying to spice it up. I mean, they’ve got a balanced three lines for sure. Their fourth played well where we’re trying to get some something going there with the top six. Uh Kefir Sherwood gets the two goals. What did you like from what he brought to the game? The energy that he had. Yeah, he was buzzing and I I think he was, you know, he’s an emotional player that plays on that edge and I felt tonight he controlled his emotions well and he had success. You saw when he’s, you know, he he’s learning how to play with that bite but then reel it in and when he does that he can be very effective like he was tonight. That entire line seemed to have some chemistry. Uh Ratu seemed to be very good along the boards. He gets the assist. Uh what do you think is working for him within that line? You know, he’s smart. He’s a young player. So, you know, he he Ratu got some pucks there and he’s made some good decisions with them. Um, and as you see as the game goes, there’s times where he knows he’s going to feel more and more comfortable when he has more time rather than making a quick play. And I think just with Bainy and and Woody, they give give a little bit help him with a little bit of speed because he, you know, he’s smart uh with the puck and uh he he really understands the game. So, uh those two with their speed and their hard for check help them. Um we talked to both Quinn and Jake after the game and both expressed a little bit of frustration. and Jake more so with his own play. Um, do you need more from your top guys? Well, you know what? It’s early in the season. We’re in game three and you know, we’re not going to get into that. Like, you know, the top guys know, you know, they I’m sure they’re thinking about their power play or, you know, it’s been three games and they want to get it going, but um, we’re not going to over um, analyze that at this moment. Uh, what about a younger guy um, in you know, in Coots? He hasn’t necessarily been been as noticeable uh, the, you know, the last two games. What are your thoughts on on where he’s at and his readiness? Yeah, he was fine again tonight. I mean, he’s just we’re, you know, in the last two games we’re playing you’re playing against an Edmonton team that as we know lose their first game. They’re coming in with the Heat, you know, and they did and they had five five power plays. So, um, and then tonight you’ve got a fast team. We were there. Um, we lost we lost coverage on the first one uh to veteran D. It just it was a little mishap. It happens fast. The puck went to the east west and they got in in inside us. That that usually doesn’t happen and there was a mishap on another goal where they got to break away from just we picked oursel on the change. So we got to clean up some of the fundamentals of our of the way we’re playing and and not not do it to ourself and you know that’s where then you saw we score the shorty and then we go press press press and they get a non-man rush again. So there’s lots of hockey left in the game. um when when it’s unfortunate where we go behind the eightball early, we got to just hang in and trust it and uh we just we’re just going sometimes too much. And but the the the good thing is the the uh they want to win the they want to they they go for it. They want want to win the hockey game, but they’re learning that when you’re playing good teams, you don’t have to press at times. When you just make it 32, you don’t have to press. It’ll go all in right away. So they’ll they’ll learn that and it’s early in the season. What have you liked out of your penalty kills so far? Yeah, there. You know what? We’ve got Bluger out and you know, we’re I like the way Ratty’s played actually. He’s winning faceoffs and he’s really listening to Deiner. I thought he had a good game. A few good shifts in the PK where he gained the confidence of Dean Dino and uh tonight he he did well again. And um you know that goal tonight was just um I think I think we thought we had more time on the rush. I would have liked to seen our forwards come more inside, but they were assuming we’re going up the wall. But, uh, you know, you don’t usually see a bounce like that behind our net too often. We’ve got a pretty sound penalty kill for the most part. Conversely, I know we’re only three games into the season, but what do you need more of from your power play? Well, they just got to zip it around. I mean, I think I think sometimes you get in your own head and you you overanalyze and um they’re really good players. they’ll figure it out and when one drops, uh, you know, usually that’s when the confidence picks up. You talked about St. Louis being a good rush team in that area of the game specifically. Where did your players come up short today? Well, we we actually played it pretty pretty decent. I mean, when you look at what happened, you you have a you have a change where we bump into each other and they get they get a breakaway, right? Um, so I wouldn’t even call that a rush. Um, and you know, the rush goal they did get, um, you know, they hit the late guy. I thought maybe we could have, maybe we could have been there with him. Who knows? But, uh, I just felt, uh, we pressed it a little bit too much and we were diving in. You get so excited when you get the 3-2. They feel the energy of the crowd. We know we got this. We know we’re humming and like I said, maybe over trying at that moment going all in when they get a bounce and they go the other way and then make it 4-2. It’s uh, a little bit deflating where we’ll learn from that. We learned you have seven minutes left in the game or in the second period. There’s lots of hockey left and uh we’ll learn from that. It’s early in the season and we’ll just uh you know know that we got to make a little bit better uh reads on those ones and uh not not force it too much. What did you think of the play of your goalender tonight? Yeah, I thought it was good. There’s a couple that had no chance. I mean, a couple dropped right in front of him and uh there was a little bit of lost coverage. Um and uh you know, Lance is always there, always professional and uh you know, it’s not on him, that’s for sure.

  1. Seems to be no jump in half the teams step, they just don't seem to want to win enough. Petterson should be setting the example and hes not

  2. When Sherwood and Chytil are leading goal scorers something is very wrong. Does the top line have any points?
Clearly EP40, Debrusk, and Boeser are not clicking. Change it up.

  3. Miller had a reputation, as a disturbance on teams long before it was made public in Vancouver. That's why he was moved from NY to Tampa, Tampa to Van, and we all know what happened here. He was absolutely dominant, and Petey largely rode his presence to collect points. He's also a major factor in every game he plays pretty much. Petey? Has been outplayed by bottom six forwards for over a year now. And it ain't gonna get better. He's a bust

  4. Start by changing the lines because they’re clearly not working. The defence is supposed to be the team’s strong point, but so far it’s been looking horrible. Demko and Sherwood only players that are playing good. With that said it’s still very early, but it’s going to be a long season for Canucks fans if they can’t figure this thing out.

  5. What the puck does EP11.6 even do? Lose faceoffs and one-touch pass. Guy ruined this franchise, Hughes is over it. Traded the wrong guy JT should've been Captain over Quinn. Petey woulda been gone haha

  6. Adam Foote is wearing rose colored glasses. Today I saw St Louis look like the Harlem Globetrotters on skates. It's easy to say it's early, but where's the fire in the belly and some mental toughness?

  7. There's 2 forwards who show up every game. Sherwood and Garly. That's gotta be frustrating and I have to wonder if that'll play into his decision to extend or leave in the offseason. Losing him will be a major gut punch. We need Petey to lock in sooner rather than later. This so-called revenge tour looking a lot like last season so far. The Cootes experiment needs to end though. Like the kid, but at the end of the day he's 18 and he's not ready yet. That line got brutalized tonight and hasn't looked good at any point this season.

Made my day watching the nucks lose ❤ … camucksNate I was right all along, nucks no playoffs baby ❤

  9. Sherwood is such a motivated player. Im glad hes able to show off his talents with the Canucks. I just hope the rest of the team is as hungry as him.
