Braden Fiske, Darious Williams & Terrance Ferguson Talk Rams-Ravens Matchup | Locker Room Interviews
So, you know, after after a game like last week, how do you guys, you know, like regroup and and get ready for the next one? No doubt. Uh, you know, I think we’re still a really good team. I’m not going to let one loss define us like that, especially, you know, the way we went out. You know, I think we just got to trust the process, continue to do what we do. You know, I mean, we got a great squad out here. I mean, I’m not going to stress over, you know, one game. But, uh, no, you know, we got to trust the process, keep doing what we’re doing, and just keep building. Still early in the season, a lot of games left. And uh how do you guys use this this kind of like mini by week and you know just what do you do to to recuperate and recover ahead of uh the next week? Uh I kick it at the crib. I’m more of a station type of guy. I’m not the type to go out or fly. I got to kick it out the crib. But uh I just try to relax, you know, take care of the body cuz it’s a buy, but it’s a short buy. You know, I try to stay, you know, stay recruit, watch football over the weekend, hang out, and get ready to go for Monday. Uh what stands out most about about this Ravens offense, especially the offensive line? Uh yeah, man. They’re physical. You know, they uh they do well with their fits and uh you know, they they got a great back behind him, so they know the track they want to keep him on and once he finds a hole, he’s able to hit it and go. I mean, he’s a home run hitter. Uh you know, both backs, him and Justice Hill are you know, really good. So, I think uh you know, what they bring is, you know, they’re going to be physical. It’s going to be a dog fight for sure. And with a back like Derrick Henry, you know, you guys have done a really good job of, you know, not having any vertical rushing lanes and really keeping guys, you know, bottled up. How do you do that against, you know, such a downhill runner like Derrick Henry who’s seen so many fronts and defenses in his day? Uh, yeah, you know, I think we just got to stay true to our process, you know, stay true to, you know, how we attack at our practice and, uh, just continue to be physical. I think that’s been the biggest thing, you know, just being physical up front, resetting the line of scrimmage and, you know, forcing teams to get the passing downs, keeping them in those second and longs and third and longs, get the get the rushers on the field and, you know, just keep playing ball. And when the the Ravens have a guy that uh like Lamar Jackson who might not be uh you know who who you don’t really know if he’s going to be ready or not, how do you kind of prepare for a matchup where you know you you might have a really versatile guy like Lamar or you might have, you know, kind of more of a pocket passer like Cooper Rush. Uh yeah, you know, I think at the end of the day it’s the NFL. no matter who’s out there is going to be a good player. And I think that’s something I’ve learned, you know, over the course of my year and a half, whatever it’s been, of no matter who’s out there, whoever lines up, you know, it’s a good player. This is the NFL. Everyone’s good. So, you know, we stay true to who we are. And obviously, there’s a different element to how you rush depending on who the quarterback is, but regardless, you know, we still got to bring our game and, you know, we got to play because like I said, you know, it’s the NFL, so everyone’s going to be good. So, you know, after after a loss like you guys had on uh Thursday night, how do you kind of recoup and get ready for the week ahead? I mean, we just look forward to the next game. Um, you know, stuff like that happens in the NFL all the time. So, I mean, the biggest thing is is is knowing the type of team we are. You know, we we know who we are deep down. You know, we could easily be 5 and0, but we’re not. So, I mean, we just look to the next game, you wipe that one off, and then we know we’ll see those guys again um later down the road. And, uh, how do you use, you know, the the kind of like mini by week to, you know, what do you personally do to kind of, uh, you know, relax and get ready for the week ahead? Yeah, I just kind of, you know, just kind of kick back, just regenerate. Uh, you know, take the body, recovery, watch the other games. You know, we we obviously got Baltimore coming up, so Jacksonville in a couple weeks, so just being able to watch the game, just kind of get ahead, relax. Uh, but I mean, at the end of the day, you know, it’s all about the next week. So, that was a bad taste in our mouth. Obviously, we didn’t like the going into that mini by-week like that, but uh, you know, you you you can’t get ready or just can’t wait to come back to work. I feel like that’s the biggest thing is just knowing that we had this day Wednesday ready to practice. Uh just being able to get off the couch and come back to work. And uh the quarterbacks have been, you know, utilizing kind of a rotation, you know, based on, you know, drives and stuff like that. How do you feel like that aids itself to, you know, everybody being at their best in that unit? Yeah, I think I I mean, we got guys who could play. I think right now is is kind of feeling, you know, uh just being able to capitalize on those playoffs when we get them. Um but right now, I mean, we’re still going through that process. You know, the thing is is we got we got three corners, four when gets back that can play. So, I mean, I think the big thing is just capitalizing off each other, working off each other, founding energy off each other, and I think that’s big. And, uh, what is, you know, some of the this defense has a lot of a lot of like six defensive back packages, you know, how do you feel like you guys have been able to make sure that your communication is is all on point? Yeah, I think that’s the biggest thing is is we have a lot of time in the in the classroom. We got a lot of time together. So, out there on the field. So, I mean, our communication is key in this defense. Uh I think it’s key in every defense. But, I mean, we know we got six guys. I think basically I mean having the the level of of a relationship that we have, the closeness that we have helps that communication, but uh also just being able to play off each other and know each other is big, too. And do you feel do you feel like uh the the defense is more connected in in the second year of of Chris Schula’s uh you know tenure as as defensive coordinator? Yeah, absolutely. I mean, all the way down to to guys who don’t play. I mean, we’re we’re well connected. I think that’s one of the big things that’s that’s going to help push us further into this season and push us into the uh the the playoff season is uh our closeness and our relationships with our team. And then uh what stands out most about this Baltimore offense? I mean, they got electric guys, you know, they got we got 22. We got to stop Derrick Henry. Uh, you got Z Flowers. He’s electric on the open field, getting the ball. Uh, they got possession guys. They got, you know, they’re just they’re talented. They know what to do. They know how to do it. But, you know, we’re a talented defense, too. So, we can’t wait for the challenge. Can you uh walk us through your first career catch, man? Like, what did you see on the play and how how’d it go down for you? Yeah, you know, um, super excited, obviously, to get out there and be able to make an impact for the team, help them help the team as much as I could. And you know, it was man coverage. Kind of planned for man coverage in that that scenario. Um seeing a lot of that same exact person how they’re playing. Um try to get an edge, got an edge, and um keep it vertical. And Matthew gave me a great ball, go make opportunity. Um super blessed, you know, just always pray about it, work in the work in the in the dark and on those type of things, make those type of plays. So, uh just happy to be out there. Fun for it to be like kind of a jump ball opportunity. Kind of a fun one to watch on tape. Yeah. Yeah, it was, you know, it was obviously a great ball. Um, and he put it right where I needed it. So, uh, it definitely makes it more fun with something like that downfield instead of, you know, a flat route or whatever. So, I’m just blessed to be putting that opportunity by the coaches and for them to trust me to go make that play on a big third down. Um, so that that slot fade kind of the same ball that you caught during the preseason. Is that is that a route that you know you have a lot of experience with and that you enjoy going? Yeah, you know, it’s funny. Not really, but uh as soon as I got here, they obviously seen something. Coach McVey and the staff, you know, trusted me to run that route a couple times now, obviously in the preseason and there. I think it’s something that fits into my skill set and um I can make a play on and I feel comfortable running the route. In college, didn’t do it too much, but you know, it’s something I definitely think they’ve seen obviously and trust me to go make that play. You obviously had the injury during camp. Um tight end such a tough position to transition from college to the NFL. like was it frustrating to miss that much time in the preseason and like to kind of put it on hold for a little bit there? Yeah, you know, it definitely is. You know, anytime you’re not out there with the team, um especially being a new guy trying to learn the offense, get um your your feet underneath of you and, you know, start to become the player you want to be and you were in college and you felt, you know, comfortable and you know the plays and you know the speed of the game. So, uh having that setback definitely uh doesn’t feel good. you know, no one wants to be off on the sideline watching. Um, especially when you’re early like that. But, you know, excuse me, perhap. Um, but you know, it honestly I I take it as something that’s going to make me stronger in the long run. Um, having something like that right off the bat. Um, I always think God gives trials, how small, how big they are, to people um, for them to make the most out of their opportunity. And so for me, you know, just taking it as it is, um, and each day trying to get better, uh, was the biggest thing through that time. Ask you to give state secrets obviously, but just in general, what’s the toughest part of learning the tight end position in this offense in particular? Yeah, generally speaking, yeah, I think in general, you think you look at tight ends, you got to pass protect, you got to run block, and you got to run routes. So, um, one, knowing all those things, you got to be able to know what the pass protection calls are, the run run calls. Um, know all the route concepts and usually at tight end, you get put a lot of different different places. So, it’s not just like, hey, you’re in the slot here or you’re out L out to X, you know, you got to play sometimes you’re out wide, you’re in the core, you’re coming across the ball. You do so many things, especially um, in this offense where coach M is so there’s a lot of things he does with offense. So just having to learn those uh the little nuances I think is the biggest thing too is you know all schemes you can kind of grasp and I feel like I have a good um good coaching staff at Oregon that gave me those opportunities to learn a lot of schemes a lot of coordinators but you know there’s a lot of nuance to the game and at this level there’s no not a lot of room for error so I think that’s kind of a big thing learning all those skill sets and the nuances of them. How do you try to make up for some of that lost time in camp, especially when you’re kind of balancing some of the scout team responsibilities you have and just game planning in general? Yeah, I think the big thing is just going out there every time. Um, and whether it’s a scout rep, uh, a rep with the ones, whatever it is, just trying to get better each rep, you know, taking those reps and not just going through the motions, but really getting better through those reps and trying to learn and, uh, apply our offense to the scout team things and give the best look I can and get better at those things cuz, um, all football kind of has that little bit of carryover. And then um just really trying to take the most of my opportunities, you know, uh and obviously getting with the coaches and trying to learn and do extra stuff with blocking and uh running routes and just kind of finding those nuances, getting some time with Higs and just really asking a lot of questions from those guys. All the older tight ends in the room, they’ve really helped me out just asking them questions whenever I have them.
