Minnesota Vikings Q&A: McCarthy Return? Redmond Contract? Mason Fumbles?

[Music] What’s going on, Jerome? Beautiful day for some Q&A. Uh, I promise we’ll get better at doing more Q&A videos. There you go. First up, uh, Asia Maze. Thoughts on JJ McCarthy? Do you think he is going to have going to come back and make a splash? He held the ball too darn long in his first few starts. He should have did more with all that time he was given. Skull Baby. No. So, first off, I I I mean, time is given. I don’t know. Like, McCarthy hasn’t played a single down with Christian Darasaw, hasn’t played a single down with Jordan Addison. And also, it was the first two career NFL starts. And the first start turned out pretty pretty good at the end, right? And here’s my own thing. Like the the Vikings signed up for this. Like, if McCarthy didn’t have the high ankle sprain, he would still be starting because that was the plan all along. No matter the the Vikings were one and four, the Vikings were four- one, it it really does not matter. So I I feel like once McCarthy is 100% healthy and good to go, it’s his job. And this is everything that the entire organization has been built about. They’re just not going to give that up after eight quarters. But he was bad for seven quarters. There there’s lots lots of circumstances going on there. Offensive line, 14 different combinations. Kevin McConnell was not calling a great game the first couple of weeks. Plus, the the benefit of Jay McCarthy watching Carson Wentz is it’s different than last year because things that he sees now can be implemented right when he gets back as opposed to last year where he was just out. So, I I feel like Okonnell’s talked about this too where McCarthy has learned the benefit of getting rid of the ball, putting the ball in play, not locking on to one read and just living to fight another day. And I feel like that’s going to, you know, greatly help Jay McCarthy. us. He should have played in preseason. I know it’s very easy hindsight 2020 to uh you go back and criticize, but I mean he he definitely needed the game reps. Next up, number two, Fuzzy Wuzzy. If our other two quarterbacks are still unhealthy and Bromer ends up being the starter, what are some things we can expect from him? Play calling, more run game. So, I I feel like not a whole lot would change. I I well except I feel like Kevin McConnell would definitely lean on the quick game and that’s something that Brosmer was very adept at. He set the single season record for completion percentage or number of completions among the two for the Gophers last year. And I had said if the Vikings had to play a game last Sunday, so two days ago, McCarthy wouldn’t have been healthy. I don’t know if Wentz would have been healthy. So it may have been the bro show if the Vikings had to play week six. So, I I feel like it would actually be like a good challenge to have where the offensive line getting healthy and Bromer does have a quick release does get rid of the ball quickly and you’re going to run the ball with a plum and you’re going to have Brosmer distribute the ball, put the ball in play to your playmakers. So, I actually think actually think it would have been fine. Now, of course, every single team, the most popular guy in town is the backup quarterback. this case is the third number three quarterback because it’s always a it’s always a quantity that you don’t know like a Schroinger’s QB. He could be great, he could be bad, but you just don’t know. But Brosmer, I feel like we we got something here. I feel like Brosmer will be a long-term backup in this league summer and that has a lot of value. All right, so props to Quaison scouting department for keeping bro show here. Speaking of props to the scouting department in Quacy, uh Jaylen Redmond is looking really damn good this season. Uh question is Matt Bailey, is Jaylen Redmond a free agent after this year? And if so, what do you think the contract would look like for him? So, uh Redmond uh he’s slated to be a free agent, but he’s going to be exclusive rights free agent 2026. Now, that’s basically team control because essentially ERFA versus restricted free agent or unrestricted free agent. Restricted free agent is where you put the tender. are inflated. You’re first, second, original round tender. Uh there’s a right of refusal with the team, but other teams can bid. Exclusive rights free agent means it’s just a team. So basically, the Vikings be like, “This is what you’re making.” And Redmond’s like, “All right, all right.” So the Vikings do have control uh of him through 2026 essentially. But he’s definitely earned himself some cash, right? And Redmond Fish is a year strong. I could easily see the Vikings inking him up to a, you know, two, threeyear deal because he’s been a dog, man. He’s been fantastic. Found the next Aaron Don, the freaking XFL. It’s good. John Matthews, how much worse would it need to get before we panic about Jordan Mason’s fumbles? Well, fumbles, there’s a bit of puck luck. There’s a bit of fluke. And Mason hasn’t really been known as a fumbler. But also, you look at the Vikings running backs last couple years. You look at, you know, Jones has turfed it. You look at uh Madison turfed it. Dvin Cook, like, is it a running back coach issue? It is Curtis Mkins. I don’t know. Z Xavier Scott put one on the turf against the Browns. But it’s something to monitor and something to stress and hopefully the Vikings in individual uh drills are working on ball security with running backs. But I mean, it’s paramount. Like the Vikings won even though they lost the turnover battle uh against the Browns. can’t have that cuz that’s not going to happen uh more often than not. But Mason still got a ton of faith and frankly when Aaron Jones returns it should still be Mason as the bell cow plus Xavier Scott should be involved too. Lastly, uh Derek Triple, what do you think would have happened if Daniel Jones joined the PRA Ravens practice squad instead of the Vikings last year? Would he have stayed and made Baltimore more competitive right now? Nah. Uh, I feel like Daniel Jones, you know, glad he’s balling out because he’s helping the Vikings in the compensatory pick area, but Daniel Jones, he he was going to go somewhere where he could compete for the starting job. All right. And he could have resigned here for, you know, decent money. Probably would have been JJ McCarthy’s backup, but also if JJ McCarthy had gotten injured, he would have had this great opportunity. But also, he’s leading the number one offense in the National Football League and seems like he’s doing pretty damn good, you know. So, props Don Jones. And with the Ravens, I I I don’t think that he would have resigned with the Ravens to be Lamar Jackson’s back, though, as Lamar, you know, MVP adjacent player. And well, he he did get injured, so uh but of course, uh Daniel Jones and his agent aren’t Clairvoyance. But I still feel like he would have left and then the Ravens would have been lined for a nice little combat story pick as opposed to the Vikings. But again, props to Daniel Jones. It’s the Kevin Oconell school of uh coach uh quarterbacks who can’t throw good and want to learn how to do other stuff, too. It’s good, man. Anyways, that’s it. Q&A for this beautiful day. You guys are the best you to do. Skull production value.

  1. Trade Carson. Develop max and jj. I’m tired of every year we bring in a veteran who does just enough and then let us down in the end and we didn’t develop a young qb. We have the staff to do it. Reps and staying healthy for jj

  2. Doubt JJ plays this Sunday with how KOC was talkin in his presser! As he said it’s not just getting healthy, also footwork and getting completions and the power in getting them even if it isn’t your first read

  3. JJm absolutely should have played the first half in all preseason games minimum. Guys still want to show off well in preseason, it would have been a good warming up for him. Opportunity missed.
