  1. I really hope they extend Preller. He has his flaws, but he keeps things exciting for the team and his dedication is 2nd to none.

  2. For all his faults he is worth extending if only to keep him away from certain other teams. I don’t even want to think about a Dodger system that is stocked with Preller prospects

  3. I think it’s a lock he’s a lifer in San Diego tbh. He keeps the stadium full and keeps putting a club out that goes to the playoffs. We may not have won it all, but it’s sure fucking better than how it was for the majority of my lifetime. We are a franchise that’s been consistently competitive and makes fans want to go see them play.

I just don’t see how you make a change at this point.

  4. We lose Preller we become a mid team perspetuallt waiting on prospects to pan out and trade

preller has spearheaded the most exciting padres era ever, flaws and all. Give me preller for life

  5. Honest question: Why do people assume that Preller is the only person who could possibly build a winner here? To read through the comments, any other GM is doomed to failure, but why?

  6. I don’t hate Preller. I think he is very good at evaluating talent. I won’t be upset if we keep him.

That being said, I think he is a middling GM. People in this sub/fanbase are far too willing to give him credit for the better performance in recent years.

The reality is, he came to this franchise and put losing teams on the field for the first 5 seasons. Then he got an increase in payroll, and the teams started performing better.

The better performance lines up more with the massive increase in payroll than it does with Preller. If he was such an amazing GM, he would have been able to put together a contender on a lower budget. I understand that some time is needed to right the ship when coming in as a new GM, but 5 years of failure to reach that point is too much.

Preller makes flashy trades, some of which work out, but many of which have been detrimental to the org in retrospect. The same thing with many of his free agent signings, he has thrown too much money at several players during the wrong time of their careers.

I just don’t understand the mindset many people here have that Preller is to thank for the more recent success. I think many GMs would succeed with the larger payrolls Preller has been able to work recently. Preller is a great talent scout, but he has many other weaknesses. For some reason, so many people have continuously deflected blame from him onto other people.

  7. I’m an outsider but this doesn’t sound particularly optimistic. Do you guys think they’d really let him go? Idk a lot about the Padres but from what I do know I thought Preller was widely liked and respected, despite tolerable flaws
