Chicago Bears Get MORE GOOD NEWS After Win vs. Commanders + Ben Johnson Makes BIG Adjustments

[Music] Happy Victory Tuesday everybody. This is Chicago Bears now. My name is Harrison Graham. We got a DJ Moore injury update as Ben Johnson uh spoke to the media just a little bit ago. Plus, I want to dive into some adjustments Ben Johnson and his staff made coming out of the by-week that led to success against the Washington Commanders. Let’s start with uh DJ Moore, though. Johnson hopped on ESPN 1000 and said Moore is likely daytoday after staying overnight in Washington. He also just spoke to the media uh I think via Zoom and confirmed that DJ is back in Chicago. So, uh very good sign there. Here’s what he had to say though regarding uh DJ Moore. He said, “I think we got some good news in that regard. I think he’ll be dayto-day going forward. It was a groin deal he was dealing with, but I think we’re going to be okay.” Obviously, good news coming out of that win last night because that was really only the negative, right? It’s like you have this emotional win, you’re riding high. Oh crap, DJ’s going to the hospital. What the hell could that mean? I wonder if there’s something a little bit more that they looked into because if it was just like a groin thing, I don’t think that’s something you would stay in the hospital for. Maybe Ben Johnson’s uh you know, protecting DJ’s privacy. Maybe he got dehydrated or something and uh got light in the head in the locker room or something and they just wanted to be precautious, get some fluids in him. Who knows? There could be a million things uh that they that they checked out, but it sounds like he’s going to be okay. The first injury report of the week will come out tomorrow as the Bears play on Sunday. First injury reports always on Wednesday when that’s the case. So, we’ll see if there’s more clarity on that tomorrow. But all in all, uh seems like this is okay. Uh do I know if he’s going to play this week? I’m not sure, but it doesn’t sound like a long-term thing either way. Obviously, DJ’s had a weird season, I would say. Hey, you know, he’s kind of taking on a lesser role. Roma Dunes emerged as that wide receiver one, but also the ball’s kind of getting spread around. You got two tight ends. You got Zakius Burden starting to come on. Obviously, they ran the ball really effectively uh last night. I thought this could be a game where DJ gets some man coverage looks and they could take advantage. And early on, I thought they did that. He had uh all three of his catches for 42 yards in the first quarter. Like, okay, this could be a big DJ game. But then, you know, Caleb and didn’t have a great second quarter. Then in the second half, it didn’t seem like DJ was a big part uh of the game plan. But it was nice to see him get more involved early uh in that football game last night. And look, I I think if you’re DJ Moore, you just got to kind of take embrace this role of you may not be this 1,200 yard receiver this year, but if you can be a good leader, be a good teammate, uh vibe with Caleb. I think that moment at the end of the Raiders game where uh they block the kick and Caleb’s relieved and he kind of dabs him up. I think that was kind of a symbolic thing like, hey, like we’re growing as a team, we’re growing as a partnership. Um hopefully he can continue to get more involved. I think there’s still room for areas uh for DJ to be more impactful. But uh all in all, from a health standpoint, good to see good to hear that it sounds like he’s going to be okay. But we’ll see in terms of his game status starting tomorrow as the Bears host the Saints on Sunday. All right, guys. All right, let’s dive into some Ben Johnson adjustments because what was the storyline for this team from a weakness standpoint heading into last night? They don’t run the ball well and they don’t stop the run well. Well, how about this for answering the bell in that regard? They rush for 145 yards last night. Big improvement. I think they were averaging 102 yards per game before last night. And the running backs were not efficient at all. less than three and a half yards per carry. Swift averaged 7.7 as a team. They averaged 5.4 last night. They were also getting gashed on the ground. 6.1 yards per carry allowed before last night. Four flat uh in last night’s game. That’s a big improvement. And only 124 allowed. If you told me the Bears would outg on the ground, I’d be like, ah, it’s just not going to happen. I just hope they keep it relatively close. I think I said it in pregame. I was like, be within 50 yards of the Commanders. Just don’t get killed like you did against the Raiders. They won that battle. They were more efficient and more effective, which is very, very nice uh to see. And look, it’s one game, but this could be a major development. If you can become a team that can run the football uh a little bit and be much better at defending the run, all of a sudden you could be cooking with gas. I mean, that could be uh that could be huge. And then really your only like notable weakness on your team is the pass rush, which even that was better last night. So, uh, for one game, your biggest weaknesses came or turned into at least a strength on offense and not a negative on defense. Uh, so good adjustments and if nothing else, that’s a sign of good coaching. They addressed the weaknesses in the by-week against a team that runs the ball extraordinarily well and found success against them. That’s uh that’s that’s what a good coaching staff does. So, that gets me really really excited. More on this topic as we go, but do want to tell you guys about today’s awesome sponsor that is Prize Pick. Daily Fantasy Made Easy at prize.com/clns. You and I make decisions every day, but on prize pickics, being right can get you paid. Don’t miss any of the excitement this season on prize picks where it’s good to be right. I finally cooled off last night. I did not hit my three player lineup. Uh only hit one out of three in that lineup. So, uh, that was by far my worst result recently, but we’ll get back on the saddle. We’ve been hot this season. Uh, the way Price Fix works is simple as you pick two to six players in your lineups, and you take more or less on stat projections. You can take passing yards, receiving yards, uh, touchdowns, fantasy score, field goals, sacks, all kinds of stats available. You pick more or less, and if you hit, you win money. It’s as simple as that. I got a three-player lineup cooked up already this week. I am kind of like Ben Johnson. I’m I’m I’m feeding it. I want more. Uh I got Trevor Lawrence more than half a passing touchdown. Little tidbit. I like taking the more on the half a passing touchdowns. It’s a passing league. Uh it’s a goblin play, so less payout, but I still like that. Uh more on Caleb Williams. 228 and a half passing yards and a not great game for him last night. Still threw for 252, so I like more than 228. Uh and then Cam Scataboo demon play to find the end zone. He scored three times last week. So, uh, I really, really like that. $20 entry to win $80 on this three-player lineup. Download the Prize Pix app today. Use our code CLNS to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. That is code CLNS to get $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. Prize Picks, it is good to be right. Okay. A big change from an offensive standpoint that led to success on the ground and with DeAndre Swift specifically is the Bears ran much more outside zone. And the data from EJ Snyder here uh proves uh that that is just leaning into DeAndre Swift as a player because someone tweeted at uh EJ who does great work uh with Brett Coleman on their podcast and he does some Bear stuff too. He said uh that this Bush person on Twitter said, “We owe Swift an apology.” He said, “No, I don’t think we do. He’s exactly what we’ve been saying he is. They stopped trying to make him into what he isn’t. They just ran him in space.” Top two rush concepts from last night. Outside zone and pull lead for 91 of his 108 yards. It’s over 10 yards per carry. Inside still, you know, 3.4 per. I did think there were some physical runs in there though where he drags some defenders. So, even on those, I actually thought he was a little bit better. Um, but he is a guy, and we’ve said this all along, get him in space. He’s not a guy that’s gonna truck people. He’s not gonna get you a ton of yards after contact. Although, I thought there were some physical runs last night, like I said. Uh, but I just think the personnel you have, and this is where I’ll give Ben credit, and they were trying to find their run game identity the first few weeks, and I just think some things quite weren’t uh clicking. I think the personnel you have is outside zone. Definitely from a DeAndre Swift standpoint, but I think your offensive line, Darnell Wright has always been effective out in space. Theo Benedict moves well. Get him on the move. Uh we know Joe Joe Tuni is scheme proof. You can use him in any way, but he’s athletic. Drew Dolman is a much better outside zone blocker than a gap blocker. And Jonah Jackson, he’s run a little bit of both in his career. But even if in Detroit they ran more gap with him, well, if one out of your five linemen is better in gap than outside zone, well, you’re going to have to run what the other four do better. And by the way, Jonah’s played pretty well since week one. So, uh I think that’s just a good job of adjusting like, hey, let’s just lean into what works. And uh getting swift in space is uh is uh the way to go. Now, that doesn’t mean teams aren’t going to adjust and you’re gonna have to continue to find different things, but uh I thought that that’s that’s a good coaching job. like, hey, this is what we’re going to do this week running the football. Let’s go to Theo Benedict, who’s going to give us more athleticism in space uh as a running team. And uh I think that was evident last night. Okay. Also, on the defensive side of this discussion of slowing down the run, I think TJ Edwards impact was pretty obvious. Uh shout out Colin, our producer. He said he’s an X factor tonight. Uh heading into last night’s game, I should say. uh coming back from injury, he was your highest graded uh defensive player per PFF. Uh I know PFF’s kind of been all over the map this year, but I think that was obvious. He was shooting the gaps uh in the run game. Uh Tmaine played well also. Uh nine tackles, 84 run defense grade. And and I don’t know snap to snap if this stayed true, but it seemed like they kept Tummaine at the will linebacker spot and TJ played middle. I’ll have to go double check that. But if that’s the case, and I think it was, then I I think you stick with that moving forward cuz when TJ was out, Noah Su was playing middle. We’ll talk about him in a second. And Tmaine was playing Will. And Tmaine has been better this year at Will than he was in his first two years at middle. So, uh, maybe that’s just what you roll with moving forward. And look, I think big picture, I don’t think all of a sudden you’re going to be an elite running team week in and week out offensively and an elite run defensive team. Can you be middle of the pack though? Can you be between 13 and 20 on both sides of the football in your rushing offense and rushing defense? If you can, and if Caleb continues to progresses uh with this passing game, uh your offense can be a fringe top 10 offense this year, which I think we would have all taken that going into year one with Ben Johnson. And the defense, especially with how the secondary outside of Nan Wright is playing and he’s battling too and getting turnovers this team, you your defense can be pretty solid. So, that’s what I’m hoping for. I’m not saying you’re going to be elite all of a sudden, but if you go from being bad to average in those areas, that that can make a difference. That can be the difference in eight wins and 10 wins potentially. So, uh hopefully that continues. Real quick on Noah Su, he did exit last night’s game with a concussion. Uh friendly fire and an unfortunate play. I mean, he got drilled by Jonathan Ford, a 325lb defensive tackle. Uh kind of a scary looking play. It was good to see him walk off. So hopefully he’ll be back soon. Short week. You would not expect him to be ready or eligible to play in this game. I I would be shocked if he cleared protocol. Uh does that mean Ruben Hiplight’s active? He was inactive last night. I don’t know. But Su as your third linebacker this year and as your second linebacker for the first four weeks primarily. I He’s one of your most improved players. So hopefully he gets out there soon because I think he’s taking a nice little jump here. All right, that’s it for this edition of Victory Tuesday. 1. My brain is having difficulty processing that we have won back to back games by being on the right side of a last second victory. My Bear fandom has conditioned me to expect failure. Please continue to retrain my brain, Ben Johnson!

  2. Wrong. Moore is not having a weird season. He doesn't have a quarterback that processes multiple options simultaneously and then making the best decision. By now with a competent quarterback, DJ would have had easily more than four or 500 yards. He's a great receiver, just doesn't have a great quarterback

  3. DJ is definitely not the WR#2. Rome is having a great year no doubt but thats on the back of Caleb forcing everything to him. I dont know if its the play calling but they need to get him more involved. He catches literally everything and on these short downs would be a easy first down each time
