That study bases its entire point off the assumption that if a game is reffed fairly then at the end of the game each team should have the same number of penalties, which obviously isn’t how it works.

Is actually the right question to be asking… But not for the purposes of pure confirmation bias. You look at the source material to better assess the methodology and potential for bias.
And this study is severely flawed at best. Pretty easy to make data say whatever you want it to if you’re coming into the “analysis” with a desired result in mind.
