[Fangraphs] One Failure After Another

  1. Headline uses “failure” the annoying way, that it’s World Series or bust, but the rest of the article is more realistic and optimistic about the team actually being pretty good even though they lost in the DS.

  2. This *was* the best team they could have fielded — two aces, a top offense, but the holes were very evident which is saying something about the roster as a whole. Cashman’s never been able to complete a roster and he’s got a donkey running the show for him. It hasn’t been more evident as much as it has over the last three seasons.

This offseason is gonna be more of a lipstick-on-a-pig scenario.

  3. “Ultimately, despite the disappointing finish, the Yankees aren’t that far off. They can do more to improve their roster — they should add an impact bat, sort out center field and shortstop, patch up the bullpen, and continue to develop guys — but they weren’t wrong in their belief that they were talented enough to win it all. Sometimes you just get beat.”

Not a bad overall assessment – the biggest issue seems to be the lack of obvious targets, especially though FA. I am guessing there will be some surprise trades

  4. Can we just fire Boone? What’s the downside? Even if you are a Boone defender it’s time to make a change just for the sake of shaking it up. if you don’t think he sucks, there’s still no reasonable take that the team is better because of him.

  5. I think this is a very good assessment of where the Yankees are looking this offseason. If they get Bellinger back, then it probably does make the most sense to make him the fulltime (or at least strong side platoon) CFer and commit to Jasson in LF. There’s no way Dominguez can be put in CF at this stage, so it’s either commit to him in LF or trade him (at least, IMO).

They’re also right that the time to address SS was anytime before this offseason. Bichette is unlikely and there are few SS on the trade market that make sense as solutions. I had been thinking Masyn Winn before his bat fell off a cliff starting in August (his defense is elite though). Possibly Tovar? Neither are that much more of a guarantee to be as useful as Cabellero though, who should be the starter.

They didn’t mention 1B though, but maybe (hopefully) the assumption is Rice is fulltime 1B now. Get a RHB to backup Wells. I really like their idea of going out and getting a guy like Jacob Young to platoon with Bellinger in CF. Elite defense, excellent speed, and knows how to bunt. He had more sacrifice hits (9) this year than the Yanks did as a team (7).

Glad they put the plug in about Spencer Jones. Extremely exciting player but there is zero chance he can replicate any of that in the bigs right now with those massive swing and miss issues, unfortunately. Fans need to be realistic on his potential impact (or lack thereof) for next year, without major improvements.

  6. “These Yankees had the best offense in the majors (119 wRC+); they scored the most runs (849), ran the highest OPS (.787) by 19 points, and accumulated the most WAR from their position players (34.2).”

…And we were beat by the team with the best good old fashioned batting average.
Very good article, but once again, a key component of their failure is their inability to consistently hit for contact. Is it just the luck of who we have or is it more of a coaching issue?

  7. They should’ve never given Boone another contract. Guy should’ve been canned years ago

  8. This was for sure the best all around team they’ve had in a long time and to not win the division and not even get out of the ALDS against a so so Toronto team that didn’t even make the playoffs last season is fully on Boone. No one can convince me otherwise. The guy breeds ineptitude and made so many boneheaded decisions all year which is why we Lost the division and had to play a wild card series that set us up for failure
