I think he’s a good pitcher
If the team uses it as an excuse to not spend more money, then no. If the team still goes out and spends to meet the needs to take the next step, then yes. I will never say no to more SP depth, and Flaherty has shown he can be a quality starter, even if it’s not consistent. The owner is the 10th richest owner in baseball. $20 mill is pocket change to him in the grand scheme of things.
Yeah. He’s a serviceable #3-4 guy who can eat innings, bringing in someone else to do that probably costs the same. Why not bring back one of the few players that like being here?
He seems to alternate good and bad years so I think he’ll be good again so id be happy
Meh, I’m very on the fence about him.
He had a down year so he’s due for a good one
I don’t think $20m or whatever is a good “deal”for us so I don’t love it from that perspective. But he’ll have a role at least
It’s almost unbelievable how inconsistent he is.
Some games he looks elite and could be a #1 or #2 starter amd some games he can’t find the strike zone.
That being said, yes I’d be happy if he optioned to stay with the team next year.
He’s a good placeholder, stop gap guy who can eat innings for us when we need him to. Flaherty had some downright awful games but a big chunk of his losses can be dialed up to a shared failure with the offense. Many of his losses came after allowing 3-4 earned runs, not something totally out of the ordinary for a guy who’s probably going to be the 5th person in our rotation.
$20 mil for a veteran starter with postseason experience and swing and miss stuff is a deal. Would be a boon for the Tigers if he exercises it.
Yes. He will figure it out.
By definition if the player exercises their player option it’s a bad deal for the club. Same is true in reverse
I would be fine with it. I wouldn’t hate it if he did opt out, but as of right now we’ve got Skubal, Mize, Olson, and Melton as rotation options you feel good about. Keider is great in his current role, but I don’t love the idea of him being in the 5 man rotation just yet. I am still bullish on SGL, especially if he can get his neck healthy during the offseason and have a normal offseason after returning from TJ midseason. There’s definitely a spot for Jack in the rotation and there’s not exactly a surplus of impact arms scheduled to hit free agency.
$20 million for this? I’m not amped about it.

I’d really like him back, I like his energy and I think he’s a good deal
A wise man once said, “you can’t have too much starting pitching”
Hell yeah. 100% he takes the option. We need him! The way he got out of the 2 innings in extras was awesome. He’s going to be a huge part of our world series run next year.
If?
i would welcome him back, solid #3 starter and an innings eater
Wouldn’t be the same exuberant reaction I had last offseason when the Tigers signed him, but yea, I’d be happy to have Jack back if he opts in. His performance was up and down this season but he stayed healthier and covered more innings than I expected him to.
Plus, he brings swing and miss and vet presence to a team that badly needs both. Cody Stavenhagen told a great anecdote on Tiger Territory about how, after one of the Tigers’s worst losses down the stretch, Flaherty stepped up in the locker room, showing accountability and protecting the young players. I’ll always have a soft spot for him for that, and the fact he wanted to come back to the Tigers
Good pitchers don’t grow on trees. I’d much rather have Jack around for 20 mil than any number of broken down reclamation projects getting over 10 mil a year.
That’s not much more than Alex Cobb. Go for it.
Please stay, Jack.
I know his starts have been inconsistent (to say the least), but his friendship with Skubs is super heartwarming
We need a #5 starter. He isnt all that good, but I dont think the owners are interested in bringing in free agents.
Half the time he’s a solid number 2. The other half he’s a solid or at least passable 4 or 5.
I’d rather have that $20 mil to give to a pitcher we have to coax out of retirement that never throws a single pitch after being cited as a big reason we didn’t get impact arms at the deadline.
But seriously I’m fine. He wasn’t great, but did well against good competition and was good down the stretch. He’s a veteran, he didn’t have any major IL issues and can be a higher tier innings eater to actually valuable mid-rotation arm. Skubal, Mize, Olson, Flaherty, Melton to start the year most likely. Jobe back later in the year. Let Darth Keider and SGL and whoever else you want compete for a 6th spot/long relief/spot start/IL fill in and probably add a cheaper vet for the same purpose.
Flaherty has the stuff if he works on his execution. I’d keep him
Yes definitely. He had some rough outings this year but for what he is his high end stuff is way between than the other similar guys. Every teams 4-5 guy is going to get hit around a bit, but other team 4-5 guys don’t have the ability to get 10k/9. That kind of ability has upside.
I also feel he’s way better than what we saw this year.
He is a good pitcher still and I like having him on the team
As long as we add another starter in the offseason. Don’t want to go into next year having to rely on Olson and Jobe to start a bunch of games. Flaherty is fine as a 3/4 starter.
After watching him neg himself in game 5 I want him to stick around
