Sam Nestler will be reporting live from Ball Arena a little bit later as assuming he doesn’t get lost inside the building out there in Denver at some point which I don’t think we can make that assumption less. No, I wouldn’t. Uh yes, we know Sam’s having issues some way he’s having issues. It’s been way too quiet of a day from Sam’s perspective. So, we’re all waiting for the other shoe to drop. If you were to say, in fact, I think we talked about this when the schedule came out this summer and you have to start on the road at Winnipeg and at Colorado, you knew that was not going to be easy. And I think we all were thinking, well, if you get something out of that trip, it’s okay because that is a gauntlet. I don’t think any of us were going in there going, “Well, four points is what you expect, but that sure is a nice way to start the season.” Yeah, I would say realistically, if you could get two of the four points, I mean, looking at them two teams back to back, but it did it did help with some injuries, some key injuries to to Winnipeg, right? And sure, but but then even still coming into tonight’s game, you would think it would be a little bit tougher. And it honestly, it was a little bit tougher. And I will say that the lead of this is is this may be the best game I’ve seen a goalender that gave up four goals in a hockey game play because he was pelted by uh shot after shot by some of the best players on the planet. Um and man did he make some incredible saves that he had the glove hand working tonight. Not only that, early on it and I think Razer probably mentioned it. I I really didn’t even have the sound on, so I didn’t listen to Razer. I’m g I’m guessing the the word Velcro must have came in at some point in Razer’s eloquent speech. I don’t know, but it just seemed like I mean Jake was just gobbling everything up and keeping it in tight. We didn’t see a lot of stuff laying around him or bouncing off him tonight. To me, you’re absolutely right. Jake’s performance tonight is the number one storyline coming out of this one, especially Luds when you compare it to the way he played against Winnipeg, which let’s face it, they got the win, but we said on a couple of goals, boy, he you even said it early, it didn’t look like he was tracking the pucks really well in Manitoba on Thursday night. I don’t know if you noticed this, but it looked to me early in this one like he was in a different level. his sharpness was there even before the big power plays where all of a sudden they were peppering with shots. It just looked like he was in a different zone tonight. It it it’s like he knew exactly where they were shooting. Even the ones that were going into his belly, if you if you go back and you watch him, you can see him just prior to them releasing the puck, he would take a little shuffle one way or the other, like he kind of knew or he could have been baiting him, you I mean, sometimes goalie will give you a little bit here, then you you know, you step into it. Um, and I do want to say I I remember when we had one of the guys from uh Colorado uh on the air and we did a show with him, right? And I had made a comment about Marty Nas about probably being overpaid if he got I don’t remember what I said, 10 or 12 minutes. But I’m going to tell you, he looked awesome tonight. Nous was one hell of a player and I felt that every time he got below the tops of the circles um he was dangerous and I think that that marriage be between him and McKinnon and then when Mar gets on you know all into that thing they’re going to be a pair to to handle. What’s your gut feeling now? I know that probably won’t happen until the off season, but Nes could end up being an unrestricted free agent. And I know you and I talked about this on the summer shows that it sounded like Nas wasn’t really thrilled about sort of being forced into Colorado. Not because he doesn’t want to play for the ABS, but he didn’t have a say, right? He was a undecided or unwilling trade. It’s not that he didn’t want to go. He wasn’t asking to leave. Carolina used him to try to get Mico Ranton in. But if you watch the way they play the first couple of games and Nas already has a pile of points. How much do you think if you put on you’re very good at this prognostication if you put on your Nostradamas hat is some deal going to get done? Is he going to have so much fun playing with McKinnon and Mar that it it erases any doubts that he wants to be there? I you know what when you think about it Owen what besides McDavid who else would you want to play with in the league right I mean I think there’s a maybe Mo you know there’s maybe three or four and Coov is on that list and Rantin obviously a guy like Dryidle or maybe Jack Eel and MC and McDavid and Sydney Crosby we’re talking the elite of the elite yeah and he’s only what 27 26 27 I think he’s 26 yeah I thought he was older for some reason. But yeah, I I think he can probably see himself playing with this team and especially playing with with McKinnon and piling up some points and some goals and the and that contract of his is probably that number is going to go up and so I think he feels he’s in a pretty good spot right here. Nas will be 27 on June January 15th. He was born Luds January 15th. This doesn’t make us all feel old. 1999, only about six months before you guys won the Stanley Cup. What do you mean? It makes some of us feel old. Well, you you’re talking to me. Yeah, but me, too, because I’m I’m on the wrong side of 40 now, too. So, yeah. Okay. But, all right. Before we get back into the game itself, uh I wanted to just flush out one more thing on this contract thing because one of the reasons why Miko Ranson wasn’t extended for the dollar amount that he ended up signing in Dallas was this big contentious negotiation between the Avalanche and his representation. They both played hard ball. They probably both got it wrong. Although I lean a little bit more towards the ABS making the mistake because they blinked, right? It wasn’t as though Miko blinked and turned in a trade request. He was just playing hard ball up toward the end. But they have to pay Kale Mar. And Mar might get pressured to do what McDavid did, might get pressured to do what I I mean, you could say Jack Eel, you know, pretty team friendly in the end. Or he could go for what Capri off did. And Macar is worth every penny of what he gets. Is that going to make it any harder, do you think, for them to to resign Nas? No. I Well, you know what? I think Nate may be a little bit like McDavid, knowing that how good a player Nachious is. And now there’s a there’s the three or the four, whatever number you want to put on great players there that I would believe that those three or four guys believe that they can win a Stanley Cup and that we want to make this fit and we want to make it work because I mean I agree with you. I mean, McKinnon can probably do the same thing McDavid did. I’m going to go in, I’m gonna I’m gonna name my number and they’ll give it to him. But I I think that he’s made a lot of money, right? And he’s going to make a lot more money coming up. So if 17 million I mean I I I agree. I I actually thought it’d be around 18 to be honest with you or more. Um but I think he’ll come in between 16 and 17 million. And I think that probably allows them to get somewhere where they want the neighborhood of NIS. And I I I just believe that these guys have made their money. They’re great players. They’re going to make more money, but I think they ultimately want to get another ring. Yeah, it’ll be really interesting to see if Macar takes that quote unquote teamfriendly deal like McDavid did or if he goes for top end money because let’s face it, Kale Mar is right at there at the top of the of the NHL ladder and he can command whatever dollar amount within the percentage of the cap that he wants. Right. It’s like McDavid. McDavid, it wasn’t a negotiation with Edmonton. He he get told them what the number was going to be and they were stunned. It was under 14 million for sure. All right, let’s let’s break this one down. We start in the first period like we always do. And honestly, I thought the Stars had a very good start to this game. And if it wasn’t for special teams, I thought early on and even later in the game, there were times I’d say in the first two periods where Dallas looked like the better team five on five. But this game of course wasn’t played just five on five. Let’s start with that early play. It was an easy call by the referee, but the puck goes in the Avalanche net on a dump in by Jason Robertson and it was clearly a delayed offside. The Stars had not touched up and the Avalanche dodged a bullet there, Luds, because that was a bad bounce, but it also went in their net and they were really fortunate that the Stars weren’t on side. Yeah. You know, and again, I I think that I don’t want to say it was a a sign of things to come, but the way the whole game unfolded by going back and forth, back forth. Um, yeah. I thought I didn’t think Dallas was great. I thought they were good. Um, I thought that when when Colorado’s best players had the puck, they made things happen like they usually do. But I just thought it was an entertaining game. Honestly, that that’s the way I look at this game. It was entertaining. I thought it was really entertaining. It was a fun hockey game. Uh when you think back on that, if we kind of stop our recap for just a second and think about coach’s reactions, they may not be thrilled with the looseness of this game, but from an entertainment fan perspective, gosh, I wish we could have had more than five minutes of overtime. Yeah, they they got their money’s worth there. We did, too. I mean, we we got our money’s worth here for for sure. I I mean, it was a back and forth game, and I think it got tilted. I thought Colorado there were times where Colorado had it tilted for more a longer period of time than Dallas ever really did. Dallas, but there was sustained pressure and sustained opportunities I thought more by Colorado at times than Dallas. Budsley, the first power play happened. Colorado gets it. They have a lot of zone time now. didn’t get any grade A’s, but they had six quality chances. And Razer made the comment of they kept hitting Jake in the belly button. While that makes the goalie look better, you’re still talking about Lechinan, Mar, Nelson, Olivesson, Mar, Burns. These aren’t guys that are just lobbing it in from center ice. He did. They weren’t putting him in the corners, though. Well, that that’s the thing is they were hitting him in the belly button. I mean, it seemed like every time Jake wanted them saved, he was directly in the middle of the net. So, I don’t think their sights were where they wanted them to be, but but at the end of the day, good players found find a way to squeak them through a few holes, but they didn’t on them power plays there. John, the Stars get a power play. Uh, they had a couple of chances, really good ones from Wyatt Johnston and Maverick Bourke. Those were great A’s, but Wedgewood I thought looked sharp early as well, but Les, it was the second Avalanche power play. didn’t score on it, but Nate McKinnon hit the left post on that back door pass from a car and then he had the one-time from the bottom of the left circle which easily could have gone in. Those Oh, and by the way, Brock Nelson teed up right in the middle of the slot. Jake and the posts were very, very good. Yeah, I I remember, you know, Patrick would always Patrick W always kind of kisses the post and Flurry would kiss the post and I’m happy Jake doesn’t do any of that kind of stuff, turn around or rub the post or anything like that. But yeah, they had their opportunities. Like I said, they they they just had a few misses. That that that score could have been a little bit lopsided with those power plays coming out of the first period, but it wasn’t. It wasn’t. Robo had a really good look. He was wide open, zooming in down the right side, got the pass, and he just missed the net. Now, look, that’s going to happen from time to time. Elite scorers are shooting for the edges. They’re not shooting for the middle. And he puts it wide on Wedgewood. He’ll get his chance later. But before we get to this break, would you like to break down the first goal because Thomas Harley scored what a setup play starting with with Niels Lungquist and then Rantin to set up the one-time goal. Yeah, Niels is playing with some confidence, isn’t he? I mean, coming to the ice, he had the jets going, but but again, the play is is Mo. And, you know, we had we had talked about this last game. We had shown a clip how Renan just seems to know where everybody is on the ice and he sells this all the way down to basically the bottom of the circle where he’s just continuing to look forward. He’s looking straight ahead the whole time. He’s waiting for Thomas Harley to get across that blue line. Harley does he just places a nice spot here for Thomas Harley. We know that he’s not going to try to do anything different but blow it by him and he does and he blows it right by Wedgewood and Wedgewood there. When Ranton comes in where he was, Wedgewood now has to come out and challenge him. And when he does, and that’s exactly what Ratton wants. He wants him to come out because he already knows where Harley is. Then Tus puts it on that on that right hand side, left hand side of Wedgwood and he keeps it down lower. Wedge you can’t grab it. A big goal for Harley, his first of the season. Dallas ends up the period with a one- nothing lead. They’re outshot 14-5. The Avalanche had the edge 14-9 in scoring chances. But guess what? High dangers are by my count were 4-4. As Luds was saying, Colorado had the better of the first period possession, but they didn’t always turn it into the highest quality scoring chances. And that’s why Dallas had the lead after the first. That and Jay Cotton was pretty good. Okay, we’re going to go to the second and third periods and talk to Sam and of course take your super chats. We have a ton more to get to here on the DLLS Stars podcast postgame show. It’s back. Yes, Mando’s back, man. It’s back. Nando’s back. Fall’s here. Chris Bear, football, maybe a bonfire or two. And look who we brought in. Speaking of grundles, let’s bring in Sam. Sam, did you hear the first Mando read of the season? I did not. I just missed it. It’s a little cleaner and grundles, but the drop is still there. So, Sam Nestler joins us live from Ball Arena. Speaking of balls, butt cracks, and grundles. Yeah. How’s uh how’s that one for a pretty entertaining contest? Yeah. I don’t know if we expected this to be any different, right? I don’t know if these teams ever play a boring game, but um pretty obvious the the story there was was number 29 in net for Dallas. I mean, they they were heavily outplayed. It’s kind of in a different way than the Winnipeg game, but similar type of games where you you don’t get anywhere near the game you want to play, but you find timely goals, you get a couple saves, and you get two points out of it. So, um guys were very honest about it afterwards, but it’s it’s four points and it’s time to go back home for the home opener. What was the sense from Glenn Gulletson in this one as far as he was not thrilled with the last 10 minutes of the game against Winnipeg, but overall fairly content with the first game. How do you feel about tonight? Yeah, not not at all content. Uh he said, I mean, first thing he said was was uh a great quote about Jake. He said, “This is probably the best goalie performance or I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a goalie performance since Jake Hottoner in 2022 against Calgary.” So, uh very much praising him on that, but the he they were very honest. we we got outplayed said we have a lot to work on. Uh I think Mike asked him, you know, what did you learn from this game? And he said, I learned we have a lot to work on. So, uh they they fully understand it. Nobody. And I I like that. You know, I don’t I like the idea of being proud that you found a way to get four points against two very good teams on the road, but I also like the fact that they fully understand that they have not played anywhere near the game they want to play. Uh a couple of, as I mentioned, timely goals tonight. Jake was just absolutely ridiculous. uh without some of those glove saves he made going to his left, this game might be seven to3 Colorado and over in a in a heartbeat. And then Nico Ranton, I know it wasn’t an overtime winner or you know the late winner, but he still finds a way to bury his former team and they just hate it here. They the middle fingers and the booing and the screaming and a lot of it’s pointed at Duchine, too. Still that it’s been a while. I thought they move on from that. Duchain asked for a trade. Yes, Rantin did not. But he also tore their hearts out in Dallas last May. Yeah. And they they do not forget it. Every time they’re on the ice, they are booing them from start to finish and every time they touch the puck. So, I’m sure for guys like Mo, they probably feed off that. And he had a great game again tonight. But lots to work on guys. That’s that’s the key. And and Goldson actually said structurally he didn’t hate it. Like they were he thought they were in positions. They were just lost battles all over the ice. Uh and you could see that. I mean, Luds, I’m sure, has already talked about it, if not will talk about it. They lost coverage a couple of times, but a lot of it was losing battles in front of the net. I mean, the the amount of cross ice passes that guys just didn’t get a piece of or guys getting inside on them in in the blue paint. Uh, that’s what they need to work on to get to their game. And let’s just hope 10 15 games in as Led has talked about they get there. No, Sam, I’ll tell you what, you’re right. And and what I believe it is right now, because they have tweaked some things, you know, again, they’ve changed some of that cover. It’s indecision right now and you can see guys are stopping where they would normally go some certain place or take them out of where they’re supposed to be and now they’re thinking and there that thinking against a good team creates quality scoring chances and that’s what it is there with Niels and Wyatt there was I think that led to one of the goals and but it was just are you going and are going and I should go there because last year I went there even though the puck wasn’t there I’d go there and now they’re kind of caught in between not all of them but but again that’s going to just takes some time to, you know, get used to everybody around there. Yeah, Jake said the same thing, too. He he was like, I don’t want to speak for the guys because obviously I have this pretty much the same type of job that I have always had, but he said it if you play one way for three years, it can lead to a lot of of not confusion, that’s the wrong word, but Lud said indecision, uh second guessing once in a while where you think I’m going to go here. And I think if you watch a lot of these goals, it wasn’t like I’m just in the wrong spot. You know, we saw in the games, uh, the Winnipeg game, you know, Rope makes the turn the wrong way or things like that. This one to me was more, as Luds just said, of kind of getting stuck of like, oh, should I go to this guy on the left? Oh, maybe not. And then all a sudden the cross ice pass gets to Nas and it’s a goal. So, I think that you’re right, LS, I think it’ll take time to to adjust to it. But, um, the the effort is there, I think. Uh, and I think that’s a good thing. The reading react thing that’s it’s all read and react now where before it was just that’s my guy, I go now. And and so that has to come with the flow. You have to kind of look around a little bit, you know, more than just going, “Oh, here’s my guy right here.” That’s easy. But like I said before, that’s kind of a get out of jail free card because when something breaks down, all you have to do is you turn around, go, “Well, I got my guy right here.” Well, maybe maybe your partner fell down. You should have helped. So anyway, like you said, it will take some time. Sam, I got to ask you because I saw your reaction to our group texts during the game. What do you think about Justin M Kovian and standing up for Muriel Hayeskin during the game tonight? God, I love it. I love correct ls. Correct me if I’m wrong. Shouldn’t that have been a penalty? Yes. Right. I thought that was a board. Yeah, there you go. For sure. It’s It’s a definite hit from behind if anything. And it was a follow through. But in this in this hit, right, I I I don’t know what we have here for clips. I don’t remember. But I am and I Sam sent us a text message and my my first response to Sam was why wasn’t Bishell the first guy there because Leon Bishell was coming around the back side of the net where he would have been the first guy to get to this but he cut in front of the front of the net and then he went to a different player instead of going to the one that runs him from behind and Richian is the guy that was like comes back around later and goes oh that left hand here I will and then here’s a little tilt here and and a little Ritzo gets him here with a little left I believe it was at the end. Y boy, what a big left hook. He was he took a couple lads an uppercut or two early. He was kind of stuck in his jersey, had to shake out of it and when he switched to southpaw and got his hands right, he came with that big sweeping left hook and dropped Ross Colton. I loved it. Ross Colton also had he was grabbing his uh the part of his chin strap right here. He was just pulling on it. Super Robian was sleeve coming out of his jersey, helmet turning sideways, all the kinds of craziness and then he still finds it. But no matter what happens in the fight. It’s a great fight and it’s great that he gets that left hand and kind of gets the the win I guess if you want to call it that. But the fact that the win the fact that he stood up for him is the big thing for me. I mean, we go back to last year with with the most recent was obviously Darnell Nurse and and Bousard on on rope hints, but we saw that constantly throughout the year and Luds is basically sitting there putting his arms up like why is nobody doing anything about it? There’s no Jamie Ben in the lineup. They don’t have Mason Marshman on the team anymore. Bishial didn’t do it. Guess who’s doing it? It’s the rookie who’s trying to make the team and stay on this team. And I I absolutely love that. And you know, you know, the more that he jumps into this, it’s going to do two things for him. It’s going to get him more ice time, right? Because now he’s seeing and he and a little I don’t want to call him little guy, but little guy from some other guys that continues to do that. It drags the bigger people into the fight and then you become bigger and bigger and the next thing it’ll do, it’ll get a little phone call or a tap on the back and say, “I need you to go look for an apartment.” Yeah. Get out of the hotel. He can stay with me if he wants. Katie said it’s fine. You got an extra room. Hey Lud. Oh, go ahead. I I want to ask him about this. How important it is for a guy like Ritz Kovian to do that, but also make sure he doesn’t take an instigator and hurt his team in the process. He he went up and gave a cross check to sort of the side of the arm of Colton to get his attention. Got in front of him and they clearly said something and then they dropped the gloves. if he jumps him from behind and takes that 210 and and the extra five. I mean, that’s just to me, even though he’s young, that seems like a savier move to not take an instigator. Even if he goes in there and takes an instigator and ends up with an extra two, you still go over and you tap him on the pass at that at that moment. That that was a bad hit. That was a bad hit on your teammate. And regardless of the penalty or not, that that brings everybody together. And it’s a young kid that’s doing it. he gets pulled into the group a little bit more. Not that he’s not pulled in already, but like I said, it sometimes you you take the extra penalty to make a statement early, early in the season, early in your career, early to everybody else like, “I’m here for you guys. I expect you guys to be here for me.” Remember last year when when Ratn had his very first game? You know what I’m talking about, Sam? When he got hit along the wall and nobody came to him. Yep. That that was not cool, right? And I I don’t know if they talked about that or whatever, but that’s not the way you welcome I don’t care if it’s a fourthline guy or it’s a superstar like that. You don’t welcome a guy to a team because I remember Ren and kind of getting up and kind of looking around going, “Hey, you know, anybody?” Yeah. Anyone? Anyone here? Yeah. So, yeah. So, L I want to ask you about Nils in a second, but I did want to mention something before I forget. Uh Wyatt Johnston was talking about his game and and mentioning a few things and he he was asked about his breakaway because it’s one of those rare breakaways where he it’s from the blue line so he’s got plenty of time to think about it. He’s staring down his old teammate Scott Wedgwood and uh someone asked him what he was thinking and he said honestly I wasn’t thinking about making a move or looking at Wedgewood. I was just worried my stick was broken. So he said he went in he said I love to shoot breakaways. Wyatt always shoots on those breakaways. He he rarely dees. And he said I was going in and I was like I can’t shoot because if I do I think I might snap this stick in half. So that’s why he ended up deing and and scoring that goal with high IQ guy, isn’t it? Thought it was hilarious. The fact that he’s thinking that after blocking the shot and Golson did talk about that after as well. Uh the fact that I mean we saw some physicality tonight. Luds rope hits throwing a couple hits. Ritz Kovian we mentioned and they also blocking shots blocking shots. Uh fighting for space a little bit more. I just feel like Golson said it the same thing but I personally just feel like this team is playing a little harder. And I’m curious, Luds, what you think about Nells Lungquist because he’s got the offense. He’s flashing. He’s playing great on one end, but he’s also minus three in the in his own end. And I’m just curious your thoughts on his play. Yeah. And but but again, like I said, I think what he’s doing was when he’s going north, he’s skating. He’s getting into the play. He’s getting involved and things are happening positively for him doing those kind of things, whether it’s plays, shots on net, things like that. in his own end. He’s now it’s again like unlike some other guys, some guys have it figured out, other guys don’t yet. And again, we’re talking about the system again. So, Gully and and LA need to have a talk with them and say, “Just react. Just react.” Now, now you don’t just grab a guy, react. And and that’s the whole part of this system is is you’ll start to read off of each other. And that’s what this whole thing is about is reading off each other and going to where you’re you’re supposed to go when you f your first instincts. And so I I I think he’s going to be fine because I think they’re going to give him a little bit of rope. They’re going to give everybody a little bit of rope because it is slightly different. It’s different than what they’re what they’re, you know, accustomed to like you said for the last two, three, four years. Well, Sam, guess what? I’m going to do your reads for you tonight. You fly back safely. Let’s see if we can get it through, knock on wood, an entire trip there and back without any what we Luds and I call the Sam Nestler story. So, great job. Good reporting tonight and uh I’m sure you probably can’t get your hands on a Brent Burns tank top, but that you’d look great in one of those. I’ll try my best. All right, thanks boys. All right, there you go. Sam Nestler from Ball Arena after the Stars win 5-4 in a shootout. It’s a little silly. It’s It’s available on YouTube if you’re a supporters club member. So, some of you guys that just got it tonight, if you haven’t already, check out the supporters club. Extra content from DLS on YouTube, and you can see some behind the scenes stuff from all of the shows here on DLLS. All right, let’s let’s break this one down a little bit. We talked about the first period, the Harley goal, and then the first 30 seconds of period number two. Marty Nes, who you were right, he had a heck of a contest tonight, played really, really well. He and McKinnon both looking very very good together and he scores wide open from McKinnon. It’s it’s a tough play. Look, Jakeer was phenomenal. I don’t love his upper body falling forward because I feel like if he again he’s a worldclass athlete and goalie and I’m asking a lot, but if he could somehow go post to post and stay upright, he might makes that save. But that’s like the only part of his game tonight I had any problem. He was so good. And this is also a great play by McKinnon. Yeah, but it’s it’s that it’s the indecision I was talking about. And it’s Wyatt and it’s Niels. And Niels ends up standing in front and Wyatt was should have gone to the wall right away down there. You’re the centerman typically. He he understands playing wing and center. So, but they he was the low guy, low forward there. He should have went to the wall where the pass comes from. But I’ll tell you, for the goalenders that do stretch out and fall forward, when they’re doing that, they’re cutting down the angle by reaching for that puck. So, it it can’t elevate as quick. And so, if a guy is further away, I’m guessing that’s what their their thought process is. But regardless of that, Nature’s just makes a great shot. I mean, it’s a great pass. It finds a seam through wide and nils and it’s it’s perfect shot upstairs. What are the few that got by that glove hand tonight? After the goal, that’s when Mero got checked by Ross Colton from behind in the area behind the the the net kind of in that trapezoid area. Ritzovian fought him. I want to back up real quickly. Less, we mentioned Colin Blackwell playing his 300th career NHL game tonight. Obviously a small number compared to the 1500 for Brent Burns, but he almost had a highlight reel goal in the first period. Couldn’t quite get the shot off, but made a really nice play. Yeah. Right. Right through the neutral zone. I mean, he kind of he kind of sneaks his way in the neutral zone. He ends up coming here in between three of the odds players and he he goes to the left and he finds a way to get himself behind everybody and then he’s got running out of room, but I like the way he just drops his right shoulder and he cuts to the front of the net. Probably, you know what, if it was probably a different player, if it was somebody or somebody like that, again, I don’t want I hate doing this to players, but somebody else pro because he’s on his forehand here. Somebody else probably takes it past the goalender to the far side and then tries to tuck it in. If that’s Wyatt, he probably skates a little bit further. But Blackey tries to put that in five hole and he doesn’t put it in. But even regardless, it was still a nice fight. After the nature’s goal and the Ritzgovian Colton fight, the teams traded chances for a little bit and then suddenly lets the Avalanche have their first lead. And I scratched my head because I went the defensive zone coverage here. both goals. Nas was wide open and Brinley couldn’t be more wide open standing on top of the crease. It’s a great play by Olivesson, but I’m not thrilled with Brinley being wide open at the crease. Well, if you remember right, it starts with Thomas Harley where the Brinley goes around. Harley’s trying to make some little sweep poke check here on him and and it ends up, I believe, going through the body and what he does is when he’s reaching, he kind of leans over his feet and now he’s flatfooted so he gets beat. And then right at the end, right in front of Jake, Niels, he decides that he should go right now. Niels has got to go. You know what? He’s at a he’s at a poor angle right now. I’m just going to take the offside guy. He doesn’t. He ends up going over to the puck carrier. Nice little pass and ends up just being a tap in. I’d like to see him give Jake a chance to make that one-on-one save, don’t you? And stay with He’s at a poor angle. And Jake, at that point when when a when a player is down below the top of the or the bottoms of the circle there, the goalender wants to have the confidence that he can come out and challenge there knowing that on my defenseman especially, we’re not letting any passes go across the crease and Niels should have held his position. This is what Sam was talking about about a couple of little plays in his own end. I want to highlight even though it wasn’t a goal, an unbelievable chance for Jason Robertson on the power play as he gets the pass from Wyatt Johnson. He dangles Wedgewood and a skater and he goes to his backhand. He has the whole net and Josh Manson for the first of two times tonight completely bails out Wedgie. Yeah, Manson’s been good for him earlier this year. Sure has. I think when Josh is healthy health healthy, which they hope that he will be, and we saw the hit that he I’m sure most people saw the hit that he laid out the other night, he can be a force back there. So that was in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Yeah, it was a big hit. So, it was a really good one. Manson’s a good player and he plays with an edge. So, he’s good player. Yeah, Robo Robo was all around it again tonight. So, you talk about interior. Remember we played that clip of Glen Gullson in the pregame show talking about getting interior offense. Brinley’s on top of the net for the Avalanche. You know what about Nathan Bastion? First goal as a Dallas star and where is he? right on the top of the crease. And it’s it’s Lindell. He’s in the paint. He’s in the paint. L I watched him. He created this chaos. Yeah. About 10 seconds before the goal by just throwing his body through and all of a sudden a couple of abs get sort of out of sorts. Landisk goes flying and then he never recovers to Bastion as the Stars really patiently move the puck around the perimeter. I was kind of wondering what the hell ESA’s doing down there. ESA was almost in the crease. makes a really nice pass. I mean, but what that’s what Bastian does. I mean, that’s how guys like him stay in the lineup. Scoring a goal is just a little extra cherry on the pie for him. And he’s in the tough area of the ice. And you can see him. It looked like he scored overtime goal in game seven. You know, he was excited about it. So, you know, he should be. Oh, yeah. So, no, I mean, it it’s nice when you see those guy guys get rewarded for all the dirty things that they have to do, but where does he do it? He does it right there in the crease. That was about five and a half minutes after the Brinley goal. So, it’s 2-2 now. Remember, the Stars had a one- nothing lead. Then they trailed 2-1. By the way, Dallas would not trail again after tying it at two because three minutes later on an offensive zone faceoff. Luds rope hence won’t get credit for an assist on this one because it touched Labouchkin, then it was a Harley shot, and then Robo’s goal. But he wins that faceoff that starts this play. Yeah. and and poor poor poor decisions by the defenseman for the abs. And Robo Robo’s in one position where you’re trying to you’re so you can tie a stick up. He reaches over to his left from a defenseman standpoint. He’s reaching over Robo’s left shoulder and trying to come around this way. Now Robo, all he has to do is he’s got a free stick. That’s how he ends up getting his stick loose is because the defenseman reaches around from the middle around to the outside. Robo’s already got him off his back, so he was able to hold him off there and then just get a little piece of that shot. But again, it was a great shot. It’s in the right spot. Robo uses his body. He’s got a big frame. He’s what what is Robo like 6’3? I got so Yeah, he’s a big kid. He’s a big kid and he’s pretty solid when he’s standing up like that. He’s hungry when he gets down below the hash marks there. How important is it that Jason Robertson already has goals in both of his first two games this year? and Thomas Harley, a two-point night, had a bunch of assists the other night. Like, seeing these guys start to cash in early in the season to get positive momentum after just two games. I would say it’s more important for Robo than it is Thomas. I mean, Thomas had a good year last year. He He’s I mean, for me, Harley should be knocking on the door of 20 goals, I think, this year. Looks pretty good, doesn’t he? Yeah. I mean, he’s got all the confidence in the world. He’s got he’s just naturally a confident kid anyways. He is. Robo needs him to go in for his confidence to get to where he can be and where he wants to be. And I think right now for Robo, it’s it’s more important for Robo, those goals going in like that. And I think it’s important where they’re going from because it’s not just a shot from here and there. He’s got to pay the price and he’s got to set up and he’s got to take a couple of whacks to score some goals. Lud’s 34 seconds into the third period. Stars going into the break again with the lead. They were up one- nothing after the first. 3-2 after the second. It’s 3-3 less than a minute into the third because Arturi Lechinan, you talked about Bastion being in the crease. Lechinan was in the paint almost standing in the pocket of Jake Aer. He’s not interfering with him, but there’s no way that would be a goal in 1999. No, no, but but again that that you know that it was one of these kind of games, right? I mean, both teams knew where they haded to go had to go in order for things to happen for them in a good way. And isn’t that fun for these two fast skating, high-flying offensive teams, it was played near the net. They’re playing playoff hockey in game two. That’s what they’re doing, which has to make I know Gully’s not happy with some of the defensive coverage and systems, but that mentality like this early in the season, that’s got to be a really good sign from this team. Yeah. And when you’re especially when you’re two and 0, you let some of the negative things just kind of sit on the corner of the table and you don’t bring them up and you just bring one or two of them up, but you keep on continue stressing all the good things that you’re doing, finding ways to win hockey games. Right now, we talked about it with Sam, but the Wyatt Johnston goal, which was at 158, so about a minute and a half later, again, quick answer for the Stars. It was 3-3. Now they quickly get the lead again. And Wyatt scores, blocking a shot and going all the way down. He has two goals in two games. This is a really smart play from a really smart hockey player. But I had no idea he was thinking about possibly a broken stick. But just the whole ability to get that and you’ve said this the other day, I think it was maybe after the Winnipeg game how fast Wyatt is. He’s not going to beat Roe Hint in a sprint all the way up the ice, but he has that quick acceleration. He blew right past Devonte. See, that’s what he is is he he’s quick. Wyatt’s quick left to right and he’s got these short little bursts. I think the reason he one of the reasons he got by him, Tas is the one that blew the shot right into his shin pads like and and Ta was facing forward, took the shot, and then I think the puck kind of went up in the air, and Taz probably reacted to the puck, and that’s what gave Wyatt the edge to break out of there. Couple of highlights for me that weren’t goals was Jason Robertson driving to the net on his backhand, dropped his shoulder a little bit, and he ended up onehanding backhand shot. Wedgie made a pretty good save there. I like Robo. You talked about his size earlier, Luds. I like the idea of him leaning on guys and taking more power moves, not just trying to shoot from the perimeter. Well, if he when he’s scoring goals with traffic and people draped all over him and they’re going in the net, he’s going, “Okay, I guess I got to do this a little bit because again, there is a little ching ching down the road here.” So, there’s a lot of ching ching go in. That price keeps going up for him, too. Otter made a great save one-on-one. I don’t like that Mar is wide open there, but he makes a great I mean, he’s literally left circle staring at him one-on-one. Jake makes the save and then Roe hints deflects Parker Kelly’s rebound. He got back and helped. Made sure that wasn’t on net. Nice play there. Then we get to another power play and Brent Burns shot. I love the nature composure on the rebound. Burns takes a long distance shot. It’s stopped by Aer and it’s in the in the slot and instead of just trying to get it right on net LS N just dust it off and it’s I know it’s easy to look for Nathan McKinnon but that was a really smart play. Well there I I got a feeling they’re going to look for each other. You know what I mean? I think there’s that that chemistry that seems to be developing the two and they’re they’re two highly skilled players. So after the goal it’s 44. You had Otter saving McKinnon as he drove the net down the left wing. Then he stopped leaning in on the rebound who was right there and everybody thought it was gonna score. In fact, I think even Josh on his playbyplay got tongue-tied for a second because he couldn’t believe that it didn’t go in. But Luds, the glove save he made on Jack Drury wide open in the left slot. The sprawling save he made on Nas back door from McKinnon very similar to the nature’s goal earlier in the game. Those two kept it 44. And boy was that incredible. I would say Jake at that point was feeling it and and and everybody else wearing the ABS jerseys were kind of shaking their head. Sam Steel was wide open at the crease. Wedgewood made a little bit of a save. Ma ma uh Josh Manson actually swatted it over the net. That was his second big save to help his goalie. And then Wedgie made a great save on Wyatt. Wyatt drove the net from the left corner. Robo had a rebound. Boy, they were right there. Guess what? We’re going to overtime, not in the show, but in the game. and we’ll talk about that after the break here on the DLS Stars postgame show. All right, we got two things to talk about. This is usually Sam’s spot, but because he’s trying not to get lost at Ball Arena and make his way to the airport, probably not till tomorrow, it’s my turn to talk about the newsletter. It is free. When I say free, I mean absolutely free. It doesn’t cost you a dime. The DLS newsletter in your inbox every day of the week on weekdays. Ali is our new newsletter writer. He is also part of the Cowboys show now. Is he is his name is Ali Jawad and he’s been on been there for I want to say about a month or so now. And of course, get something that’s free. Cost you nothing. Now, on the other side, let’s talk about the Stars Takeover and the Die Hard sale. This is not free, but it’s sold out. Sign up because I have a feeling with how well that First Stars Takeover sold, there’ll be another one this year and you’re not going to want to miss that. So, make sure you’re a diehard. All right, lads. Let’s finish off this recap into our super chats and call it a night. Overtime. I thought the Stars actually defended better maybe because they’re used to man-on-man, but the the play that scared everybody, but what a great job. Matt Duchain breaks his stick and blocks a shot. And I thought they it was back and forth. I The only thing I wish was there was more than five minutes of overtime. The Jake save, that sprawling glove save on Nas. Boy, Nate just had a great game. Three three-point night. He’s still gonna have nightmares about Jake Oddinger. Yeah, you keep on saying Sparling Doves Daves. If you haven’t watched the game, you need to go watch it. That’s all I can say. I’m sure there’ll be highlights all over the place, right? So entertaining and and the save he made on Drury in the third period. I mentioned that earlier, but we didn’t say. Not only did he make a great save, he did the little puck toss. He threw it into the circle and it was right at a timeout on the ice, so it was perfect. I think he glared at him a little bit. Maybe a little smile on his face. He was having fun tonight. See, remember when I was talking about that a couple years ago and I said, you know, every time Jake makes a save, he just kind of faces it to where the face off’s going to be the circle. Now I’m starting to wonder if there’s a little bit of, you know, a little Olay. Oh, there’s definitely a little flare to that. Yeah. Shootout. Jason Robertson shouldn’t be allowed to take shootouts. He I know he’s he’s not he’s under 60% in his career. He’s very high, right? 58% or so, which is an incredible number. But Luds, it looks like he’s automatic. I feel so bad for goalies because he’s got the same move and he’s got three places he can go and goalies can’t cover all three. Yeah. And he what he does is he just waits them out. Like it’s supposed to be who waits out who. And he just waits to let the goalie make the first move. And it doesn’t bother him how tight end he is. Even with the one that he go he roofs it there, he’s still okay somehow being right on top the crease. and maybe inside of it and going upstairs there. But that one there just underneath the glove and the pad I believe is where that one went. What do you think about the Val Nushkin shootout goal? He’s so big and and rangy and it was how he finished it. It’s power and I was surprised. I I looked in the third period and I I didn’t see much of Val and so I just think he’s big early. He’s a big powerhouse kind of kid and well he’s not a kid anymore. I guess he’s almost 30 years old but but when he finishes with that backhand it’s with authority. it. You see most guys make that move, but he he gets his arms out there. He’s catching a long read, but he finishes by driving the puck. It’s almost like he thinks, well, if somebody’s going to get a pat on it or a glove on it, I’m going to push it right through him. But he makes sure it goes in the net. The Miko Rantinan shootout goal was really fun because the crowd’s cascading booze down on him and he goes in there and just wires it past the blocker of Wedgewood and you know that felt amazing, right? Yeah. Well, I I I think I think it feels amazing for him all the time, but but he doesn’t have a you know what’s nice about him is he doesn’t have one of them overreactions to the crowd or where he is. He’s happy about it and he just goes back and he goes, “This is just what I do. Just what I do.” Um, all right. Let’s take a look. Let’s We’re stars win. Let’s take a look at some super chats real quick because we’re going to have to fly through these. Ryan, let’s start it off. I want to thank uh everybody for submitting them already. to been gifting DLS uh supporters club mer uh supporters club memberships for a month which is really generous of him. All right, let’s hit these because we’re running out of time on our show already. We’ve got 80 more of these to go. All right, talks with a Lungquist and year after the cup, two wins at tough places and on to a rocking AAC on Tuesday. Go Stars. LS, I want to ask you real quick on this one. Elliot Freriedman said earlier, he goes, I was listening to his podcast from Friday. He goes, “If I ever owned a team, it would be a non-starter for my team to lay an egg in a home opener.” He goes, “You can lose, but you can’t noshow a home opener.” He goes, “That would drive me crazy.” I don’t think the Stars are going to have that problem. You know what? I I don’t think that this group of guys have ever had that. You know what I mean? Where they lay an egg at home. I mean, even in some of the game, I mean, yes, you’re always going to have an occasional one, but sure, it seems like they’ve always been ready to go for opening night at AAC. All right, let’s go to the next one. Bing bang. Talk hockey with me. Jordan with a dismiss and a 99 cup here. Otter. Otter. Otter. I don’t know if we have the phenomenon drop, but he deserves it tonight. He was outstanding. Let’s go to the next one. I want to make Ryan work on the uh Streamyard. It’s It’s not as easy as software for a producer as our normal in studio stuff. Mark Lowry with a Lungquist and and year after the cup. Great win because my favorite star. When was the last time Lope had a big game in a big game? What do you think, Lutz? Um I don’t know. I think I think some rope does things that I think sometimes people want more from him like the the and I get it but but he does so many things with his speed that I think go fly under the radar a little bit. He opens up space by the way he skates and and Ro is not afraid to go to tough areas of the ice, you know. No, no, he’s not putting pucks in the net like like Mo and you know Robo are right now, but he’s part of the reason that they are scoring their those goals. All right, let’s go to the next one. Bing bang. Bailey, our guy Bailey who’s back with a Hastkin and 99 cup here. I’m back gents. The win was Mando. I’ve been itching for a new season. This one’s a little uncomfortable. Luts. He says, “Left the Grundle crusty for Luds.” I don’t think you should ever have a Crusty Grundle. Good win. See y’all for the next 80 games. I told you they love the Mando Reed. They the Luds Mando. Is this a thing now? Is Mando back all season? And Grundles. I don’t know how long they signed up for, but yes, they’re back with the new ad campaign with us starting tonight. So, that was a surprise. And how much fun it was to see the new Mando. All right. Uh if before we get any else here on super chats and we have a couple minutes left. Luds, the Stars home opener is on Tuesday. You’re not on the show to on Monday, but it will be Sam, myself, and I believe Sean, but they’re getting ready to play your old buddy’s team, Billy Garren’s Minnesota Wild. And boy, did they have a strong start. They they literally embarrassed the Blues in St. Louis. They were booed off the ice, the Blues, because of how good the Wild played the other night. I know they were in action tonight. I can scan and check it real quick, but I haven’t seen yet how they did. I’m going to do it right now. Oo, 7 to4 loss at home to the Columbus Blue Jacket. So, maybe not so nice on that one. What are you expecting Stars and Wild next uh Tuesday night for an 830 start, but it’s on ESPN, so it might be an 850 start. Late night on a Tuesday. I always feel that especially in Dallas those games get a little, you know, a little testy and they’re physical games and so I I think you’re going to see the same thing. Um I think this is a Minnesota team obviously that believes and now they’ve got their big guy, you know, committed um that they’re a playoff team and and so I I I got a feeling they’re going to have a little burr under their saddle for the whole season where they’re going to play. They’re they’re not a team that’s going to try to outskill you and dangle around and things like that. They’re more about, you know, we play direct hockey, we go to higher areas, we make it difficult on you, and you know, we’ll we’ll make we we’ll earn our wins. Bing bang. Oh, we got another one because guess who doesn’t want us to end on time? Our GM Ben with a very generous Casey to Smith and 99 Cup. Your ls. He wants to know your favorite song on the new Taylor Swift album, but he may have had one too many beverages because he added an extra R in Taylor. I I’ve never heard a Taylor Swift song, so I I wouldn’t know one of them. And I got a feeling even if I did, I probably wouldn’t admit it. But I do I don’t know any of the one almost echo in it. I like that one. Um, a monster in there with Ryan. We have I know he’s really getting good at this already, isn’t it? And this is hard. Streamyard. This is not easy. Remember our old producer John would say playing some of the elements are tough on Streamyard. Ryan, first time it’s finding a way to do it. So, that’s not right. That’s not right. No, it isn’t. You have Look, we always talk about man of the match. This one’s an easy one tonight, isn’t it? Jakeer. Yeah, for sure. Hands down. All right. Guess what, Luds? We’re done. We’re done. We got through it all and no more super chats and it’s right at time. Big thank you to Sam, Ryan, Luds, all the super chats. We’ll be back Monday 2 o’clock for another DLS Stars podcast. Stars are two and 0 to start the year. I’d like to use a couple cwords. [Music]

The Dallas Stars swept their two-goal season-opening road trip, as they beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday night at Ball Arena. Jake Oettinger put on a dazzling display, stopping 35-of-39 shots through regulation and overtime and then going 2-for-3 in the shootout to earn his second win of the year. In a very entertaining affair, the Stars led 1-0, 3-2 and 4-3 before ultimately winning via the skills contest, while the Avalanche led 2-1 and clawed back from three deficits to earn a point in their first non-win of 2025-26. Thomas Harley led the way for Dallas with a two-point night (1 goal, 1 assist). The Stars also received goals from Nathan Bastian, his first as a Star, Wyatt Johnston and Jason Robertson. Nathan MacKinnon (1-2-3) and Martin Necas (1-2-3) each posted three-point performances in the losing effort for Colorado. Join the Post Game Show for all the reaction, breakdowns, insights and more. Plus, Sam Nestler reports live from Ball Arena.

I hope the taking up for teammates is contagious.
Val shouldn't even be playing.
Im tired of hearing Dallas fans say they are better than the Avs. Y’all get doubled up on shots every single game against the Avs. Y’all get out played 5-5 every single game. Y’all are luckier than the Avs. Y’all have some weird curse you’ve put on that team. Otter is literally the only reason you win when you play the Avs. They could outshoot you 100-1 and y’all would still win because of some weird juju. Quit saying you are the better team. Start saying you are the luckier team.
2-0-0 babyyy
Love the balls on Ritzy! Nobody should be able to get away with a dirty hit on one of your best players, let alone Miro
The day I stop to call my favourite team the better one after a win, is the day I become a Maple Leafs fan!🤣
How in the world was Ottenger not one of the 3 stars of the game? I get Mackinnon. But Nelson #2? Huh!? Necas i could understand as well. Have to say Colorado has the homerest of homers. I can't stand to listen to their call. They show no acknowledgement of the other teams. Every game I swear there is so comment of how they have never seen anything so awful against them. Im thinking did you just start watching today? We definitely got outplayed for 3/4 of it. I loved the fight. That seemed to give us a boost. We were fortunate to even get 1 point. Ottenger was amazing!
Let me say this…Ludwig is weirdly obsessed with Wyatt, to the point he blames him for goals he isn’t responsible for giving up. It affects his analysis…First, Wyatt wasn’t the centerman on the once for the Neccas goal, Hintz was…Second, Wyatt wasn’t even in the vicinity when Neccas scored, he was on the opposite side of the ice…Rantanen was over there. And Wyatt had to travel to that side because Nils didn’t move out…All Nils did was point at Rantanen to get McKinnon (instead of moving out himself). Wyatt, seeing this, travels to that side to pick up McKinnon. Neither Nils nor Lindell rotated. Instead, Nils ran into Lindell, and they left Neccas wide open. In other words, because Nils was out of position, Wyatt was forced to come over and help with McKinnon…nobody picked up Neccas. With that, the Avs scored 4 goals…why did Ludwig immediately highlight (as an example), the one Wyatt was on the ice for?
Last year playoffs, any time Wyatt was on the ice when a goal was scored, Ludwig would fault even if other players also missed their assignment, “well that was Wyatt’s man”. This year, he will blame Wyatt, even if it isn’t his man lol. During the preseason, for example, he would acknowledge it wasn’t Wyatt’s man but still blame him.
It’s very strange, especially when you considered that Wyatt made great defensive plays this game. Wyatt can’t play 5 positions….and if he moves to one side of the ice, traveling with the puck, the rest of the guys (likewise) need to rotate.…He was on the right side of the ice when Neccas scored (from the left side). Where was the defensemen lol?
Dallas w/o otter lol. Ignore the stat sheet and enjoy the “win” fellas
