Exclusive | Anthony Volpe undergoes shoulder surgery after rough Yankees season

  1. It’s pretty inexplicable that they kept running him out there hurt as one of the worst hitters in the league when there was a better option on the bench.

  2. curious if he’s ready opening day.

i had a labrum repair. granted i am in my 40s not my 20s and don’t have full time access to dedicated medical staff and trainers, but it was over a year before being back to almost-normal.

  3. You know, I mentioned last offseason how the kid never takes any time off to rest his body. On the one hand, I appreciate the desire and work ethic, but if it’s getting to a point where he’s never actually able to recover then that is a problem. This surgery could be opportune insofar that it will save him from himself for at least a little bit.

Also, Cashman is determined to force him down our throats so I can only hope he gets better with the bat after taking some time off.

  4. I get that these players make millions but they’re still human. I’m sure they/he knew he needed surgery around June but just told him to put it off til after the playoffs and handle it over the offseason. Surely that’s a big reason why he was so bad for us this year. Imagine playing at the highest level with constant pain from a bum shoulder. I’m sure every time he was booed he was thinking “it’s my fucking shoulder guys!” I used to be in the ditch Volpe club but now I think he’ll do much better post-surgery without pain.

  5. One way or another, this has to mark an inflection point.

Option 1: He really was hurt, that’s the reason for his poor play, and once he heals up he will come back with that excuse no longer operative. (And if actual healing means we don’t see him until July, so be it. Take the time.)

Option 2: The labrum thing was always PR bullshit to cover for his poor play, but now that they claim to have addressed “it,” he will come back with that excuse no longer operative.

Either way, for a fan base that was already 50-50 at best on whether to give him another shot, this is THE shot. One more try, no more excuses.

  6. I mean, props to him for gutting it out but this team really hung him out to dry. He looked horrible and they just kept running him out there; they did him no favors. They should have benched him.

  7. Hopefully this gets him back to the gold glove player he once was. Having that infield defense all be great glovers would do wonders

  8. So…if the Yanks were in the ALCS today, he would be playing? That’s negligence on the organization’s part.

  9. it could have been a blessing to us if Volpe had surgery sooner. anyone could have been an upgrade in the lineup

  10. The yankees need to be investigated for how they’re handling these injuries.

That and its absolute horseshit that they will knowingly let guys play with these injuries and let them get torn apart by the media and fan base only to publicly acknowledge the problem months later after the damage has already been done. Look at Rizzo and look at this.

  11. On the one hand, Volpe was absolutely dreadful this year. On the other hand, the Yanks clearly mishandled a legit injury!

  12. So, rather than be truthful, it’s better if his stats crater, he costs games, the fans boo him, and the manager look like an idiot. Got it.

  13. So the FO thought it would be a good idea for an injured player to play in the DS, in a high pressure situation?

Ain’t that some sort of malpractice, it put the team’s chances at risk and possibly a players career.

  14. Fire the medical staff that okayed him playing with a torn labrum, but fire Cashpeasant first. Fking enough of this shit

  15. Surprise, surprise. So instead of doing this last June and having him well on his way to recovery, they let him be a black hole in the batting lineup and an error machine in the field for 4+ months before coming to the exact same solution? They even could have waited a month to see if avoiding surgery was possible and known by the all star break and still been on a quite favorable timeline. They had a third opportunity to reevaluate the shoulder when they got Caballero and chose not to do so. As a non-sports doctor, am I missing something here? Was his terrible glove and bat worth that much to the team?

  16. Wishing Volpe a swift recovery but clearly they will use this as the built in excuse for why he’s the starting SS next year. Also I don’t think the front office is sold on Bichette or any available free agent SS right now. They will most likely roll the dice with Volpe until the youngsters get called up.
