Liam Coen Previews Rams vs. Jaguars | Jacksonville Jaguars
Coach, welcome to London. First of all, uh when we look at a guy like Travis Hunter, I know a lot of UK fans will be interested to see such a unique player come over here. As as far as coaching is concerned, there’s no real blueprint for a player like this. How are you enjoying the challenge of working out how to work with him, how best to use him, how not to use him. How are you enjoying that challenge? Is it fun, challenging? Yeah, it is. It’s I mean that’s a lot of reason why you coach is as you mentioned is to accept challenges, try to overcome challenges. Um, and Travis is no different as you mentioned. And so, um, it’s been the scheduling all the way from the beginning till, uh, on the plane ride out here Monday night. We were sitting on the plane going over any tweaks to the schedule we we may be making this week. So, it’s every day. Um, it’s it’s a great challenge for us. It keeps everybody uh really having to be on it in terms of the schedule. his position, coaches, athletic training, uh, media, everybody has to be involved in in the process. And when you’re working with a guy that does love football and does love to to work, he loves to play. He loves to play the game. And you really want to help people like that. And and that’s somebody that is ultimately going to continue, I think, to get better and better each week. Um, but it has been a fun challenge thus far. Why have the Rams been so consistent under Shawn McVey? What is what has he built there that gives him the ability to consistently play to at least 10 wins every day? Yeah. Um yeah, you guys know the respect I have for Shawn. Um I think he is just as good if not better of a coach after maybe a tough game, whether it’s a tough output for one side of the ball, a loss. Um, I just feel like he that’s when he’s at his best in terms of being able to still put confidence into the guys, the building, the staff, the culture. Um, you know, I don’t know what his record is after a loss, which, you know, that has a lot to do with determining coach’s successes, I think, in a lot of ways. Um, but in terms of his ability to get the guys up every single week, I think is pretty cool. I mean, the way he addresses the players, the way that he handles the players, the staff, the coaches from a positive, you know, state of mind, but also the standards, the demand, the way that he ultimately wants that team to play, it shows up every single week. And win, lose, or draw, they play hard. And the quarterback, because you coached him, obviously, I’ve heard your admiration for him. What particular challenges does Anthony and his staff have against a guy like Stafford? Yeah, don’t trust those eyes now. Don’t don’t trust his eyes, but we’ve talked it. It’s this full command of the operation that ultimately we have to be great with our disguises. We have to be great with our spot drop coverages. We’ve got to try to affect the pocket obviously in a lot of ways, but he has such a great way of dissecting pre- snap and then um operating post snap. like he sees it pre- snap. He can then can things, fix the protections, get you in a better football play, but then, okay, post snap, it’s his ability to then see areas, see coverages, but also just see open spots on the field, not necessarily just looking at receivers. Um, that’s what makes Matthew so special. And so those details for us, the pre- snap, what does it look like? The discipline in our drops, the discipline in our ability to work our games and stunts and pressures. Uh that’s going to be huge this week. Where’s the offensive line right now? And then another tough matchup this week up front. Yeah. Um I think those guys are I talked to Anton, talked to some of those guys. They’re they’re very um eager I think for the the challenge to step up. Um, you know, each week you face an opportunity in this league up front to see some of the best pass rushers and whether it’s individuals, whether it’s a crew of them, whether it’s scheme, we’ve seen some good stuff. And so, um, we’ve protected at a high level in a lot of ways. Last week was a tough go. So, they know, we all know it takes truly not just those guys up front. we’ve got to help them and have a responsibility as coaches, but also, hey, stepping up to the plate and worrying about us. Let’s go get better at our sets, the way that we slide in pass protection, the way that we protect our fundamentals, our techniques, and worry about those things and not so much the guys that we’re playing against. Trevor’s numbers have been better uh in the last three games. Is that a sign? Are those indicative of how he’s grown in your system right now or how he’s playing last couple weeks? I do think that there is there’s definitely been improvements in a lot of ways. I mean, you look at um his ability to still, you know, use his legs in some areas. Um I thought there was some really good moments of being able to play some things off schedule, make some plays. Um you know, we’ve got to continue to help him create, you know, one-on-one opportunities down the field to be able to push it down there. Um but I do think there’s been improvement. I think he has confidence right now. I do. So, um, hopefully we continue to see that growth this week because like we told the team, all of this week is about us. It’s about our preparation, our operation. Let’s get better at the controllables and see how mentally tough we are. You talked on Monday about the controllables. How do you clean that up? How do you What’s the Well, we t, you know, we typically do game records today and talk, you know, just talk about the opponent a little bit and introduce that. um we know who their good players are and have a lot of respect for them, but um the message this morning was we’ve been our game records, you know, in a lot of ways. We played some really good opponents and we’ve have a lot of respect for those opponents, but um until we look at ourselves and and fix our mistakes, it doesn’t matter who we’re playing. So, that’s been the me that was the message this morning in the team meeting or today. And um how much can we go out and create our own energy out here in a in a long walkthrough where you’ve got to stay mentally locked in and focused and disciplined and detailed throughout in a course of this day after travel, after jet lag, after whatever it is. Um no excuses. Let’s go to work and uh prepare the best week we’ve had from a preparation standpoint. Um and go play to not try to do too much. you know that I think some of that did show up a little bit on Sunday where it’s one of those tight ball games. You’re back and forth. You’re struggling to maybe make some things happen in some ways and guys maybe try to go outside of all right the routes at 15 but I need to run it at 20 because of this or that or I got to make a play and some of that stuff starts to happen. It’s natural. Um but we need to let the game also come to us that way and not try to press and do too much. How much are you missing uh or how much is there with Travis in more of the explosive game to be able to get more out of the reps that he is getting on the offensive side of the ball? Yeah, I mean I think it’s obviously, you know, scheming them open is part of it is the number one is my job ultimately our job as an offensive staff to make sure we’re putting him in the progression and and putting him in the position to be number one as you know a little bit more often in some ways. And then when he is the primary, hey, you know, we got to throw and catch. You know, we got to make sure that we identify it, find him, be able to be at the right spot at the right time from a we just had this conversation. So, it’s um I think it’s a combination of a lot of those things that ultimately can all be controlled, right? We can’t always say the ball’s going to get thrown to one person based on any play unless it’s just they’re spitting it to them and giving them a ball in hand touch down the field. There’s elements to that, especially when you’re not getting a lot of one-on-one man coverage, which last week in Seattle, it was all shell, cover two, soft, kind of letting nothing get behind them. So, that’s got to be a little bit predicated on what we’re seeing, but also making sure we’re doing our jobs as coaches and he’s doing his job to be in the right spot at the right time, and Trevor’s able to deliver it because it’s great protection. It’s all it takes all 11. Coach, I want to ask what’s your previous experience of trips overseas to play games over here? Yeah, in 2019 was able to come out here with the Rams and um that was a cool experience. We stayed here, practiced here, was able to get down, you know, I love London. It’s my wife’s favorite city. Um she’s out shopping currently, so I’m I’m really excited to see what that looks like. Uh but you know and then this organization has has done this for a long time and there’s a lot of there’s pride um in this trip for us um you know our owner our ownership it means a lot to him and how his presence is in this city as well and so if he has pride in it we have pride in it as well and I think our players and staff members that put this whole thing together take a lot of pride in what they’re doing and so it’s a great experience and opportunity for us. You uh mentioned jet lag earlier. Uh obviously last year a hurricane delayed your progress over to over to these shores, but you’ve arrived this time nice and early on the Tuesday. The Rams aren’t getting it here until Saturday. Do you think that gives the Jags an advantage? I don’t know. I mean I I fully understand like I you know working with Shawn knowing their sports science behind why they are leaving later and we um you know had the same opportunity to make that decision and we just chose to come a little bit earlier es more so because we’ve got the buy afterwards and so we can not have to deal with getting back into our time zone as quickly as we would need to if we were playing a game the following week. So is it an advantage? I I don’t know. There’s sports science that that kind of supports both. And so I just thought it was a great opportunity for our guys to get here. Um you know, be able to be together a little bit more. Um have a little bit more continuity. It just came at the right time after a loss. And um our guys are excited, I think, to be able to play out here and be in that stadium uh playing on Sunday. Uh Rayon Lane continued to make plays on special teams. Can you just talk a little bit about what he bring to that? Yeah, he’s Reay’s got some swagger, man. Um he plays the game very, you know, violently. Um he’s obviously a tough kid and and what he’s obviously gone through to in high school to college to get to where he’s at. Um he takes a lot of pride in what he does and he knows he’s a he’s a darn good player. He’s got confidence right now. The players in that room, that unit, um also believe in him at a high level. And so, man, the the the who knows where the ceiling is, right, in terms of what he can be in terms of a special teams uh player in this league. I think he he takes it personal when he’s getting double teamed and be able to beat those things and when he is getting one-on-one opportunities down the field, he’s taken advantage of him. So, been really pleased with Ray. Was it tough to evaluate him because of the service academy, it’s kind of tough to find the gems out of those places? It was kind of wild. He I think he forced didn’t he force like some ridiculous amount of turnovers coming out of out of Navy in terms of like whether it was punching out causing them falling on them. He he just disrupted a lot on his tape. So for us I I know James was high on him very early on. Uh it was somebody that we had targeted very early on that they had their eyes on. Um, and sometimes you’re like, well, is the ju like is he going to be able to get on defense and, you know, this year and help us, but man, it’s it’s a great pick, I think, and a great player for us. So, it it was a little bit um, you know, challenging to go through the process a little bit just watching it, going through the tape, but man, he did so many good things that uh, they’re a well coached operation there at Navy. one or two. Liam, when you’re making a game plan against an organization that obviously you know really well, do you feel like that’s a pro or can it kind of be a con because you know what Shawn knows and Sean knows what you know? Yeah, there’s definitely a little bit of that chess match to it in terms of um the familiarity factor, but uh they’ve evolved a little bit over the last few years. We’ve definitely evolved in some different ways. is whether it was last year in Tampa, this year in Jacksonville, it’s not identical to theirs and they’re not as, you know, identical to ours. So, there’s different wrinkles, but I do think, you know, we both probably know some of the details in which maybe you can affect the protection or be able to uh blitz to stop a open side run or a closed side run. I think there’s some of that that definitely goes into it. Um, I was meeting with Camp and the def defensive staff for a little while last night, just watching their tape, going through some of the thought process and details of maybe their scheme and how they’re running the play just so that they get a little bit more insight. So many of the ball plays are similar that you see each week. What makes Shawn and those guys, I think, different is just the details that go into it and the amount of uh how specific the motions are, how efficient they are at their operation, pre- snap, identifying it, what they’re looking for maybe in some of these plays, whether they’re can to run or can to pass, can to screens, whatever it is. Um, I think that’s where he has a notch above. How well has Trevor adapted to being a mentor to Travis on and off the field? Yeah, I mean they they do spend a good pretty good amount of time together uh throughout the course of the day, whether it’s in the meeting setting, whether it’s at the walkthroughs, whether it’s postpractice, one-on-one. Um I think a pretty cool moment was last week going into Kansas City two weeks ago now. Um they had missed on a throw in practice a few times and then Travis and and Trevor stayed afterwards threw it five times till they got it right and then it came to life on the catch that Travis made um jumping up in the air against Kansas City. And so that connection hopefully continuing to to get fostered, that relationship. And um I think Trevor’s a unique leader in the way that he’s he’s able to give such great insight for a younger guy, if you will. I mean, he’s kind of mature beyond his years in so many ways. So sometimes I feel like he’s a little bit more mature than me. So, um, no, he’s I think that relationship’s getting better and

I hope all this talking translate to performance too many grown men acting like they didn’t practice come Sunday when the game is on.
Come Q1 if these athletes don’t play like they want to win we’re not going to do anything worth while in the playoffs but go home.
Trevor is holding us back!!
SEA was down 3 starting DBs and Trevor still struggled. Dude has to step up
Go trade for AJ Brown or Devonta Smith to give Trevor a real number 1 wr and allow Travis Hunter to lock in on defense
"Who's that number 99 guy? He's pretty good."
I belive in liam, let the london magic manifest. Let this be a turning point for the jags.
