Just in: After nine NBA seasons, New York Knicks guard Malcolm Brogdon has decided to retire from basketball, he tells ESPN. Brogdon became the 2017 Rookie of the Year and 2023 Sixth Man of the Year after being drafted No. 36 in 2016.

Brogdon was set to make the Knicks' regular season roster, but had been contemplating retirement and informed Knicks officials on Wednesday of his decision. Full statement from Brogdon on his sudden retirement:

"Today, I officially begin my transition out of my basketball career. I have proudly given my mind, body, and spirit to the game over the last few decades. With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards. I am deeply grateful to have arrived to this point on my own terms and now to be able to reap the benefits of my career with my family and friends. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have had a place in my journey."

  1. Really? Surely he still had teams he could play for. At least he’s got enough money to retire.

  2. I know it’s not super relevant, but it’s crazy that LeBron is outlasting dudes drafted 13 years after him.

  3. Obviously Brogdon doesn’t have the most storied career ever but two major awards and a 50-40-90 season is an amazing career

  4. He’s only 32 years old.

Crazy to think he retired only 2-3 years after winning Sixth Man of the Year.

  5. Made 132m, in his early 30’s and known for being a smart guy. Good luck on the next chapter President

  6. Such a nice combo guard when he was able to play, thought he would be alright with the Knicks but his body is probably absolute toast.

  7. Probably wasn’t gonna play much with that McBride/Clarkson bench duo, but I thought the knicks had a real steal for a depth point guard who could easily play a bigger role. Happy for him though, can’t believe he’s 32.

  8. Doesn’t he have a master’s degree and his entire family is like lawyers and academics?

Off to part 2 of his career I guess

  9. What losing the wizards in preseason does to your mental. But seriously though, I expect to see him on a bench somewhere in a coaching or development role in the not too distant future

  10. Bout to turn 33 so its not a crazy age to retire but still surprising. Wonder if hes got something lined up to be on someones staff

  11. Honestly not that shocking to me. Never thought he was 100% invested in basketball. 5yr college guy, got his masters in public policy that he talked about pursuing later in life often while on the Bucks. Glad he got his ROTY, 6MOTY and payday

  12. Does he get his full pension since he was technically signed with the Knicks this year for his 10th year in the NBA? I know a guy like him who’s made 133m and is smart probably doesn’t need to rely on it but I’m curious lol.

  13. Imagine he has other ventures in mind and of course just spending time with family. He’s made some good money for being as young as he is.

  14. That’s crazy. He’s been a personal favorite of mine since he came into the league and I was stoked when we brought him in. I’m surprised he’s retiring but he’s had a great career.

  15. Imagine telling somebody Brogdon would retire before Lebron.

Dude was rookie of the year 14 years after Lebron was drafted. That is nuts

  16. Don’t they get a bunch of benefits after 10 years of service? Retiring after 9 seems wild

  17. Surprised he didn’t want to do one more year to get the lifetime healthcare.

  18. Surprised he didn’t stick it out for one more year to get that fat NBA pension. Must’ve really not been able to play any further. Had a great and reliable run.

  19. Can’t blame the guy, health is wealth. He has enough money and intelligence to have an excellent life, wish him all the best!

  20. Sad wahoo noises. What a legend.

I remember being so sad when I realized he wasn’t gonna be a core playoff piece for the Celtics. Still an amazing player, wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being a better politician though.

  21. Damn, was really looking forward to having him on the roster as a steadying PG off the bench.

  22. can’t believe he was drafted in 16, he just feels like one of those names thats been in the league since 2010
