  1. [Rick Tochett interview by Spittin’ Chiclets](https://youtu.be/7d3bP5r8YUo)

The video is long and his interview starts at 1:17:00 mark and it’s mostly Flyers related but he talked about his time in Vancouver briefly around 2:05:00 mark. The title quote is from 1:53:50 mark and talked about Brock and Zadorov before that. I tried my best to paraphrase it.

    **On navigating social media:**

    >**TOCHETT:** “Well, I’m an expert now. I survived Vancouver Twitter. If you can survive that, that’s like climbing a mountain. They are tough.”

    >**BIZ:** “They are fucking miserable.”

**On what he should have done on his final season in Vancouver:**

    >**BIZ:** “You are a self-evaluator. What would you take away from Vancouver? What would you like to improve on and bring to Philly and have a new outlook on?”

    >**TOCHETT:** ”Hindsight is 20/20 but maybe I think I should have been a little bit harder on training camp and after training camp. We had a really good year the year before. In the case that we turn things around – we lost Game Seven 3-2 to Edmonton – but a lot of positives were happening – I think we were a little loose? Maybe not? You wanna give guys rope. Maybe I could have stepped in a little early and a little harder. Maybe that would have helped?”

**On what he regrets about his coaching in Vancouver:**

    >**TOCHETT:** “We were a really good team at what we’re good at. We were not the greatest rush team. And I kinda read into it too much and all of a sudden at training camp, all we did was rush drills and we got away from who we were. We were a really good team without the puck and a damn good forechecking team. And I went away from it. Sometimes I gotta stick to “who you are” conviction and I kind of went away from that and I kinda listened a little bit from the outside noise, something that I preached to everybody “who gives a shit what they say”? “

**On his time and relationship with the Vancouver media:**

    >**BIZ:** ”That was your first experience coaching in Canada if I’m correct. It’s a different beast. Is it really hard how you have to navigate the media? We talk about the fact that those guys have jobs to do too. Maybe they tend to nitpick. And then it’s like, it becomes exhausting and its own right and maybe it takes the focus off on what you’re trying to do in the locker room?”

    >**TOCHET:** ”If you’re gonna coach in Canada, you should talk it out and talk to people on how the best way to do it. I kinda went in blind. Adam Foote is there and I gave him some advice. I talked to Craig Berube about Toronto. You talk to certain people on how you handle that. You have 15-25 media guys every day and seven to eight different podcasts every day nitpicking about Vancouver. I’ll be honest with you. 80% of those are good guys. Listen, you gotta take the criticism, take the good with the bad. But then there’s the odd guy that I’ve had and pulled aside. I did pull a couple guys aside. It was cheapshot journalism what I thought. One guy went down the river that was just asinine and I’m a guy that can’t let it go so we had a talk about it. I was pissed and he was nervous, I tell you that. But once in a while you gotta do that though. I don’t like doing it and I don’t wanna bark at a guy in front of everybody. I think that’s grandstanding. But pulling guys aside and saying “That’s bullshit” – why not?”

    >**BIZ:** ”Did he respond well? Was he nice about it? Or did he double down?”

    >**TOCHETT:** ”Well he tried to say, he meant it this way… But he was totally wrong. He apologized. And I said to the guy, “Well you know me well enough…” Grab me aside after the scrum and tell me why didn’t you do this? And I’ll tell you I’ll be honest – this is the reason this happened. But he tried to paint it like we’re disrespecting the player, and everyone and the management was disrespecting the guy- which was farthest from the truth. The guy (player) he was talking about – I had a great relationship. I loved the guy and the guy loved me. My point is, don’t be afraid to pull a guy aside. Just don’t embarrass him in front of the media.”

    **On Canucks fans:**

    >**TOCHETT:** ”How can you complain? You get 24/7 coverage. Other cities don’t get much coverage for hockey. They’re filling the seats. The media is doing a good job of creating interest. Great place to play. Let me tell you if they win in that place… We went to the second round and people were acting like we made it to the finals. Surrey is a smaller suburb half hour from Vancouver and on game days they have Surrey parties during the games and they have two streets with two thousand people on the street watching the game.”

    >**BIZ:** ”Home of the Surrey Eagles!”

    >**TOCHETT:** ”For hockey (passion), Vancouver has got to be in the top 5.”

  2. Most of what Tocc said was good about the fans and media so I’m not gonna talk shit

But why do they always talk about Twitter, why does a NHL coach even need twitter these days?

  3. Say what you will about Chiclets, but Biz (and by extension the podcast as a whole) does a really good job of making their guests feel comfortable and share things that we wouldn’t get from any other platform

  4. *”One guy went down the river that was just asinine and I’m a guy that can’t let it go so we had a talk about it. I was pissed and he was nervous, I tell you that.”* – wonder who that is 👀

  5. Tocchet is right that we are fucking miserable at times and there is too much journalism that is more clickbait, not proper hockey journalism. Bring back hockey talk, talk about hockey, not why Petey may be sucking or god forbid blast drama for 4 months to a point where the balding bastard Friedman gets in shit for it.

  6. > TOCHETT: ”Well he tried to say, he meant it this way… But he was totally wrong. He apologized. And I said to the guy, “Well you know me well enough…” Grab me aside after the scrum and tell me why didn’t you do this? And I’ll tell you I’ll be honest – this is the reason this happened. I suspect this is in reference to Boeser being “disrespected” for not having a contract renewal, and not wearing the A.

  7. Buddy kept yapping meet pressure with pressure yet couldn’t handle a few jabronis on canucks twitter LMAO

  8. Nothing really unfair here. Biz’s comment about Canucks fans being miserable I think can be chalked up to being robbed of a cup for 55+ years. Philly fans will be no easier on Tocchet if things don’t go their way either. Not many easy coaching gigs left in the NHL these days.

  9. I think Canucks Nation needs to acknowledge the fan base and media are a competitive disadvantage. Imagine being a superstar on a sun belt team and being able to be anonymous in public, while still having a sold out loud barn.

  10. Come on now. What kind of animal goes on Twitter, with their actual name and reputation, and slanders the team?

They should just do it on Reddit behind an anonymous username like the rest of us.

The NHL is a tough league and game but damn there’s a shitload of softies as players and coaches these days.

The football market in Europe is an entirely different beast lol.

  11. This guy turned out to be soft as Charmin…

And I am willing to bet he will ruin Michikov too.
