Fangraphs’ Postseason Managerial Report Card for Aaron Boone

  1. He ain’t great but his GM isn’t helping him either. There is a weird organizational approach to emphasizing launch angle over everything else with hitting. Their player devo is not as strong as other ogranizations. (Guys come up not even knowing how to play defense or run bases)

The Dodgers are the other super power team and are on the cusp of 4th World Series appearance and potentially 3rd win in 7 years.

That’s a team that knows how to invest it’s resources into a winning product

  2. This was a good read, honestly gave me a better perspective on how managing works in baseball and all the decision making.

  3. Idk if I trust fangraphs analysts, this sub had made it clear that Boone deserved an F- in all managerial aspects

    /s

  4. I feel like he hit the right buttons and was smart this postseason, but none of the buttons worked.

  5. Boone at the end of the day is essentially our Dave Roberts/Nick Sirriani. Most of his success/failure comes down to the front office and he is not really someone who brings the gravitas or exceptional managerial skill to the table.

  6. I know I’m in the minority, but I don’t have much issue with Boone. Nor the front office to a degree.

We had a roster that could have won it all. We had a high powered offense. A solid top of the rotation with Fried, Rodon, Schlit (wish we had Cole and Schmidt obv). Bullpen was meh, but have some guys out there who could do well. Best run differential in the AL. There’s a reason we were betting favorites to win the AL for a while.

The players just didn’t show up. They got out-played. I think one player had an OPS over .650 in the playoffs. Grish, Belli, Stanton, Jazz, Volpe, Wells, Rice all played pretty poorly. Fried and Rodon shit the bed in the ALDS.

  7. Boone’s decisions played a big role in us even having to be in a wild card series to begin with

But it’s hard for me to blame him for much once we got there

Too much of the team just didn’t show up 🤷🏽‍♂️

  8. There’s been a few post seasons where Boone has made some wild decisions. I don’t think any of them were this year though. Team just couldn’t get it done, offense went cold and fried and rodon couldn’t do it vs the jays.

  9. This would mean something if Aaron Boone was actually making the managerial decisions rather than just enacting them.

  10. We were literally three Giancarlo Stanton clutch hits away from being in the ALCS, but if my grandma had a dick she’d be my grandpa or some shit.

  11. The problem isn’t any specific decisions Boone makes. I don’t care what that he made this or that decision in the post season. All managers do that, and sometimes those decisions don’t work out. What I care about is that his teams consistently underperform. Michael Kay, who seems to be a staunch Boone defender, pointed out recently that the Jay’s record was far above what their run differential would predict, while the Yanks was far below. I haven’t gone back and done a detailed analysis, but it seems to me Boone’s teams always play below what their stats would project. Every year they go into extended slumps where the whole team is playing badly. It seems to me that if the entire team is not playing up to its ability, that is a management problem. And wherever the fault lays, in the end, the only possible solution to that problem is a change in management.

  12. How do we know he even made those decisions? So many people say the analytics guys set the lineup and pitching anyhow.

  13. Enough with the excuses for losing

People keep saying the team didn’t show up

It’s been that way for the last 16 years. It hasn’t shown up the last 8 under Boone.

People are sounding just like Hal. “The players need to play better”. Well, what will make that happen? A good manager is one thing. Better players is another.

Either the players are not that good, in which case Cashman should be gone or the players are good but they were mismanaged and Boone should be gone.

“Ohhh. you don’t understand. Let me tell you why that makes no sense”. Go right ahead. It will not change the simple fact that this team has pooped the bed in the playoffs every year except 23 when they pooped the season

Yes. they had a potent offense in the regular season but there was a very long stretch in which the players didn’t show up. But pat them on the back for the offense!! Yay. Trophy time!

Should the Yankees keep doing what they are doing and hope that everything happens to work out? No. But it what they will do.
They can’t spend with the dodgers? WTF is that? Yankees have the highest profit margin of any team in the league. Hal can absolutely keep up with them. He could do exactly what they are doing. Would that be smart? Different question but FFS, saying Hal can spend when he has the richest team in the world?

People sound like someone in a bad relationship, making excuses for the person they are with lying to them

  14. Massively disagree with the A in batting, B+ in pitching is meh because there really wasn’t much he could do with our best starters sucking. Maybe not using Weaver at all since his regression has been extremely obvious. If I remember correctly, Volpe started every single game even when we were starved for offense, not one thought of using Caballero who actually gets on base (100 point difference in OBP) and in scoring position (31 SB in MUCH less playing time). There were also questionable situations where he wasn’t going to Goldy to PH against a lefty. There was no attempt to change the lineup other than L/R matchups, even with Grisham was awful as lead-off and we were starved for baserunners. C at best.

  15. Wow this ben clemens is an idiot he might know less about baseball than boone….boone is easily the worst manager in baseball…….even a a half decent manager and Yankees win the east by 10 games.

  16. Was this written by cashman? This is total dogshit and reads like ww2 propaganda. Im not sure how anyone that watched the yankees this season and the post could take that writeup away from it. Lay off the crack

  17. It was a good read and Boone didn’t manage horriblely. My only issue with Boone was his over reliance on Weaver. He threw Weaver out there like if Weaver was pitching like he did in the 2024 postseason.

  18. Boone’s lineup and BP decisions were fine this postseason, but he has a long track record of doing poorly in both. Game 1 WS, anyone?

But Boone’s problems go beyond just his lineup and BP decisions. Why do we have so many errors on defense? Over the past five seasons, we’ve finished in the top 10 for most errors committed four times. Why are we letting Rizzo and Volpe and others play through obvious injuries? Why does it always seem like when the wheels fall off, the team is incapable of clawing back? When the game gets tight, the team chokes?

Splitting the blame between Boone and Cashman is not obvious. I’d say a lot of the problems with the franchise start with Cashman (and by extension Hal who employs Cashman). But Boone does nothing to help the team. Boone didn’t totally fuck up this postseason because there weren’t too many decisions he had to make to begin with.
