Green Light’s Chris Long on His Level of Concern for the 2-3 Chiefs | The Rich Eisen Show
What are you uh concerned about, unconcerned about after we saw what happened in Jacksonville on Monday night, Chris? Well, uh I suppose it depends on what your aspirations for the team um are. I I think if you think they’re a Super Bowl contender, there are there are some concerns I would have. I mean, like defensively, you said that coming into the year, I don’t know that they’re the team that they’ve been in the past defensively. Um, I think a lot of people got real panicky about the offense, uh, in the form that it was like in in the form that it was in like the first month of the season where you didn’t have anybody outside. You can see how much Xavier Worthy helps. Um, being back on the field, I think you’re going to see more too high. You see people playing off a little bit more where you can run the football. The, you know, the run game was improved last night. I I think one thing that probably gets lost in the shuffle is that this offensive line by the end of the year I would think is going to be the best group that he’s thrown behind in a couple of years uh because of Simmons at left tackle and you know Kingsley at guard’s doing a better job and and you know in the run game he’s he’s a force. So um I think the offense is going to be fine. You see the screen game opens up everything and it will be even more so when Rasheed Rice gets back but but the defense I think like the lack of pass rush um to me is is a problem outside of Chris Jones. Um you know, I know Spags can manufacture pressure with the best of them and I know that they are working some things out in the back end and Spags is a guy who tinkers with the lineup throughout the season. So, I don’t think we’ll see the final product until late in the season, but I think the level of concern would be more on the defensive side of the football for me. Um I think the offense is going to look really dangerous by the end of the year, especially when they get Rasheed Rice back. Look how much the zones expand when you play a team like Jacksonville who’s down Trayvon Walker and can’t really get a pass rush. Um, you know, as as the down goes on, Patrick Mahomes has options. That’s not going to be a problem as the year goes on. That said, they’re um they’re now two and a half games behind the Jacksonville Jaguars and and and so um the Colts at 4-1, the Bills at 4- one, and the Steelers are coming off of a by-week at 3-1. Um there’s enough time in the remaining parts of the season for the Chiefs to catch up to them, if not overtake them. Um but you’re seeing the penalties, 13 penalties on on Monday night. You’re seeing the little things like holding penalties uh on the same guy on two kickoff returns. that that’s kind of like, you know, the runny nose of a of a team that’s not a Super Bowl team that you’re seeing the Chiefs have that you haven’t that I haven’t seen in the past. So, I’m I go back and forth. I mean, I just let the show kind of going back and forth where you’re I’m wondering because I did choose the Chiefs to win it all this year. Um me, you’re looking at him. I No, I said, not who? I said, “Okay, good.” Yeah. Yeah. Oh, okay. You know, I don’t see it. I just don’t see it. I mean like certainly it could happen. I I just they look like more of a team that has joined the pack and I don’t mean the you know the you know the league at large but I mean like the the elite teams in the NFL like this year the great thing that I guess all the good teams have going for them is the parody. Like I don’t see a far and away best team in the league. You know I I I just don’t see that. I think Detroit, the way that they’re kind of they’ve steadily just, you know, retoled and improved every week with their reputation. They got to feel like they’re in that mix. You know, we can go down the list, but um I think the NFC’s deep. You talk about the Bucks, you talk about the Eagles, even with their problems, the Packers. Um I’m sure I’m forgetting teams. The Commanders looked really good the other day. Uh, and in the AFC, it feels like the good thing that the Kansas City Chiefs have going for them is there’s less teams that are traditional powers playing their best football, like the Ravens being one of those teams that might be one and five at the end of this week. You know, that’s a big deal. Now, you look at the newcomers like the Jags and the Colts, and we’ll see if that stuff holds true. Um, I I think the Chiefs are I think the Chiefs are a really good football team that is not immune to making, you know, dumb mistakes and that and that’s what’s gone on at different points over the last couple years with this team. Like whether it was the drops or the issues up front, pre- snap penalties and, you know, last night. It’s another thing. And for the love of you know who, can we stop taking kickoffs out under 30 seconds at the end of a ball game? Especially if you have a quarterback that can probably get you 50 yards in two plays. We saw it two prime time games in a row. It’s a pet peeve of mine. I don’t know why you take the kickoff out. Only bad things happen. Take the ball to the 20, take a couple shots and get it over midfield. What do you think of when you see Chris Long essentially take that last play off it looked like? I I I have no idea. He could have been gassed. Didn’t Chris Long would never take that part. I’m sorry. Chris Jones. I meant Chris Jones. What do you I wish I was Chris Jones. I know. What does Chris Long think of Chris Jones? I mean, a lot has been made o of that last play from Chris Jones last night. Yeah. Well, at first I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, you know, because you wondered if they were trying to let him score. Like, I don’t know if that was part of the calculus for that team. I mean, we saw I think Houston and in the Houston Tampa Bay game, um I believe uh I think the Bucks let the the Texans score. you know, I’m like, these games are running together. But, uh, you know, once I saw that other guy, like when you see Trevor slipping and falling, they got no timeouts at that point. There’s 20 something seconds in the game. Like, you got to get on your horse, even if that’s the case. So, um, I don’t think there’s any excuse for it. I’m I’m certainly don’t clip me here and, you know, turn me into the anti- Chris Jones guy, but like because he’s made a million more plays than I ever did, but like you got to make the you got to make the effort, man. Like I I just I know guys are gas, but that’s just not a great look. Hey, you made it all the way to the end. Thanks for that. KC won 15 games last season, 11 of which were one score games. They went 11-0 in one score games. Thus far this season they are 0-3 in one score games. It’s called mean reversion.
Who would have thought the ravens and chiefs are 3-7 through 5 weeks of the nfl season
To be honest no team is a stand out. Some are strong now by playoffs they will be limping at the end. Football is not that good this year. Bills and Eagles are not a strong as people think. I would have never thought I would see the day where I only care about watching my Chiefs out of loyalty. I’m just checking scores on the other teams.
Who would have thought that the Panthers and the Chiefs would have the same record 5 games in
There’s no sugar coating that. CHRIS JONES QUIT. As a Chiefs fan it’s incredibly disappointing to see that from a team leader. Between that and Butker / special teams, it’s a game they deserved to lose.
Amazing how the Vegas line has shifted to -2.5 for the Sunday night showdown w Detroit.
Looking at the Chiefs strength of remaining schedule, hope for a wildcard berth is slipping away…quickly.
On one hand, the play at LT, getting Rashee back and having an offense that has the ability for some big plays (and truthfully just looks more exciting) is a great sign.
But their run game still is not promising, their defense has had multiple games where they have gotten consistently torched, and their special teams has been a disaster.
Feels reasonable to expect that they will be a dangerous team come January but extremely flawed.
All of a sudden the AFC looks incredibly weak. Chargers have gotten really banged up. Ravens are at risk of being officially done. Burrow is gone.
The Bills better make this their year lol.
Who looks elite? If im betting its on kc
It warms my heart to see the Chiefs playing good football and loosing.
Spags has to go all out at least once cos they’re defense is lacking pass rush in the interior
Lawrence falling down is probably what cost the Chiefs the game. If they would have had that extra five seconds or so they would have had a much better chance of getting into field goal range to tie the game. I have to assume the plan was to let them score since that only made it a 3 point game. I am not worried about the Chiefs though. It's still early and they will get Rice back soon and they always get better as the season goes on. I would not be at all surprised if they end up winning the division still, or at worst get in as a wild card. Once they are in the playoffs, they will be as dangerous as ever.

Yes, it looks like the KC offense could be the best since Tyreek Hill was traded away, while the defense is a question mark. I agree with Chris the secondary is the biggest concern with the loss of Justin Reid at safety. You never know, but I doubt Reid would've committed that pass interference in the end zone that spelled disaster for KC. But this isn't MLB and you can't just buy up all the top players like the Dodgers do…
Chris Jones didn't quit. You see the QB fall, you stop. He gets up, then falls again and now you think he's done. You have to start moving again as the QB is up and running away from you, do you think you get your motor going again and you catch the QB that close to the goal line? Give me a break and give Jones a break. Hate all this talk about one play. Chiefs should have scored more and not have to worry about one play.
Every NFL fan knows that early year penalties dont last for winner culture and coached teams. Also, kicking is also been an issue but wont be the entire season. KC has played and lost to Phil, LAC and Jax with only 12 points difference. They will beat Detroit this week in KC and then every damn sports person will say they are the team to beat. And incase you dont know, Detroit has only beaten Ravens, Bengals, Browns and Bears.
Chris Long dropped a lot of gems in this interview.
Mahomes won’t be Mahomes and back winning SB until Reid is gone and his trash OC- to be so ignorant and not run the ball or invest in the running game, playcalling is horrible- every good team has a coach that runs the ball- Herbert, Allen, Goff, Mayfield, etc are better QB now with a running game- stop having Mahomes just play hero ball- he will throw picks and eventually get injured- imagine they had a great coach like Harbaugh, Payton, McConnell, McVay, etc on the chiefs
