Keegan Murray signed his deal, $28 million a year. Sochan same realm?
October 15, 2025
This seems like a vast overpay for Murray and he is about the same tier of player as Sochan imo. I think it will be a mistake if Sochan gets a similar deal with everything else we will have coming due in that 5 year window. Thoughts?

Holy over pay! I’m a huge Sochan fan, been a big defender (but a realist, the shot needs to improve.) I think ideally you get Sochan at the 17-20 mark, he is a great defender and good off of cuts, now that we have a few good ball handlers I see him being a threat at the rim. It’s an important year for Jeremy
That’s crazy
I love Jeremy, but that’s way too rich.
It was also too rich for Murray, though, so…sheesh. I keep expecting the new CBA to squeeze the middle tier of players a bit, but that requires teams to think more than one season ahead.
I don’t think $28M AAV is an overpay for Murray imo; we gotta look at his cap hits. He’s shown flashes of two-way potential and we all know 3nD wings are a premium in this league.
Meanwhile, Sochan is a 6’8 screen n roll guy who can’t shoot…paying him more than $20 million is just betting against yourself
I don’t think anybody should be using the Kings as a reference point.
No way.
Pretty big overpay but Keegan is also more of a universal fit for any team so would have a more robust FA market since he is a plus defender, plus shooter with size and overall doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses. Sochan does. If he gets his extension now, he should get something closer to the Jovic extension ($62M/4) than this one.
20-25 is the range I expect for Sochan. The cap has jumped pretty substantially since the new TV deal was signed, and its projected to continue for the next several seasons. No reason to think it wont either considering the ridiculous media rights deals that have brought us this dumb ass 9 platform game scheduling is locked in for the foreseeable future. Anyways, with the way the cap has jumped a 30-35% total cap contract to 50 million a year (the Chet deal as an example) Sochan falling into that 20-25 range is probably right. I do think its possible he may be holding out to test whether that smoother three point shot we’ve seen falling in the gym over the off-season is real. If it is, his value suddenly jumps much, MUCH higher.
For me it comes down to, Murray can shoot, Sochan can’t.
I don’t hate the number for Murray
No because the spurs have too much other young talent. Sac has so much old players they can dump as they come off their deals but we can’t do that. I don’t think we would even give Jeremy 4/80 right now tbh but I would if I was the spurs
No, we shouldn’t be doing what the King’s front office are doing.
That’s too much for Murray and way too much for Sochan. As long as threes are king I view Sochan as a backup and he should be paid as such. Murray is clearly an archetype 3 and D starter wing. Just an average one.
Hell no
There’s no way he’s getting that type of money. If his contract breaks $20mil per year, I would be shocked and impressed he was able to get that much.
And I like Sochan and the unique skills he brings to this team…
Sochan will be less. These contracts paying 25-30 million a year are becoming more rare because of the new CBA. Maybe he comes out on fire this year and gets it… but the spurs gotta keep an eye on getting everyone paid and still tradable. If Sochan made 28 million a year that’s probably a negative trade asset.
Why would you even ask this? This feels like trolling. There’s nobody alive who thinks any team is giving Sochan $28M. And they are *not* the same level of player. Murray set the rookie record for 3pts made. Most analyst think he will get back that level now the chaos in Sac Town is back to normal levels.
He’s a 6’8″ movement shooter. The swing skill in the NBA.
No no no. More mouths to feed this year and expect improvement from our young guys. Sochan numbers are gonna drop a bunch this year because he just cant shoot/dribble/pass. You dont pay 20 million a year for your 4th big who only plays one side of the ball. He is clearly behind vic, barnes, and luke. Id give his minutes to Carter. Ive seen enough of sochan, lets give his minutes to someone else.
I think it will end up depending on his injury and production, it will be interesting to see what he gets now that the future is more or less vaguely mapped out
I would be absolutely ecstatic if we were able to resign sochan for 4 years 72-78 million or 5 year 90-96 million range. I think that’s likely what he gets to be honest. Keegan must have an amazing agent, this is a substantial overpay. If sochan starts shooting 36 percent from 3 on 5-6 attempts a game I think this would be close to the contract he’d sign, that’s a huge reach thinking he’d do that though
There’s 3 guys the front office needs to decide what to do after this season and that’s sochan, vassell and julian. Probably barnes as well but idk what his contract is rn
People may be underrating Keegan here. He has much more offensive versatility than Jeremy Sochan while being competent defensively. considering their age differences (25 vs 22), a bet on Sochan at similar price ranges would be if you think Sochan has a lot more offensive upside to unlock. If a theoretical trade (ignoring contracts) was offered, I think the Spurs wiuld jump at a KM/JS swap. The Spurs would lose a lot in vibes, but you cant really put a dollar amount on that. The issue I think, is having to pay Sochan while still having Vasell under contract for close to similar anouny as Keegan Murray.
This is about what Devin is making. No offense to Keegan but he just hasn’t shown anything to be worth that. Devin has his flaws, but I’d still take him at 28 million a year as a third option versus Keegan on 28 million a year as a 4th/5th option
This could age well for the Kings. If he gets back his rookie year three-point shooting and can keep up. The new found defensive efficiency that he developed this season. That’s a really high-end 3 and D-Wing and that’s about the going rate for guys like that
But if he plays the way he did this year, more or less through this contract, it’s going to be a massive overpay
I’m a huge Jeremy fan. But if that’s what he’s asking for you, let him hit restricted free agency. And unless he improves dramatically as an offensive player this next season, if a team offers him 28 million a year, you shake his hand and you wish him well because that’s just simply too much for his current production, particularly considering. He’s a guy who very realistically may never be able to start if his offense doesn’t improve, given the constraints and restrictions spacing wise with several guys who are very likely to be long-term starters next to Vic
Sochan’s going to get no extension and be allowed to test RFA next year.
Hell no! Bye-bye to Sochan if he wants anything close to this. The most is 15 a year, and that’s pushing it.
Keegan got the Devin Vassell contract
Sochan is a 20-22M player on the high end. Massive overpay by the Kings, but they are forced to keep and pay Murray.
I wouldn’t pay Sochan half of that on a four year deal. For the player he is right now the team cannot afford to sign him to a Keldon or Vassell like contract. I know you guys don’t want to hear it when I say he should probably be traded but are you willing to lose Castle or Harper or salary dump Fox in two years so you can bring him back? Because you can’t pay them all and stay under the aprons. If Jeremy is willing to sign a two year deal I’m willing to pay and then re-evaluate him vs Castle vs Harper vs Fox at expiry, but if he wants a four year contract I’m trading him for some veteran help on short term deals.
No.
Keegan is arguably a better defender than Sochan because he’s better at protecting the rim than Sochan and while he had a down year last year, his shooting is still miles better than Sochan’s. Also Keegan has had a far more healthy career than Sochan. He deserves a bigger contract than Sochan.
They are not about the same tier of player. Murray is so much better on offense
Sochan’s market is prob around the mid level
Yeah, Think Spurs are targeting closer to Jovic’s 4Y/64M deal than Murray’s 5Y/140M for Sochan.
This is 28M/year. Same as Trey Murphy, who is significantly more valuable.
Just slightly less than Jalen Johnson, who put up 19/10/5 last year and plays similar level of defense. Jalen is about 2y younger.
More than:
* Jabari Smith Jr (24M/year) who is bigger, stronger, shot better each of the last two years from three, and is a more versatile defender because he can guard a lot of 5s as well as wings and forwards. Jabari is 3y younger.
* Iviac Zubac (19.5M/year) Putting up 17/13 and All-Defense level defense.
* Josh Giddey (25M/year) putting up 15/8/7 and 2 years younger.
* Andrew Wiggins (27M/year) averaging 19/5 for his career (about the same numbers as he put up in Miami last year) and hitting 46/38 over the last 4 seasons.
* Jaden McDaniels (27M/year) who is a much better lock down defender (all defense in 24)
* RJ Barrett (26.7M/Y) who put up 21/6/5 last year
* Draymond Green (25M/Y) who is still an elite defender
* Naz Reid (25M/Y) – much better shooter and offensive player with more size.
* Cam Johnson (23.5M/Y) Significantly more useful offensive player and still good defensive player
* PJ Washington (22M/Y) Better defender, better rebounder, shot 38% last year, much better than Murray.
Just an awful contract based on the market for him. His 3pt% has dropped each year. He has no ability to create. He’s a good wing defender that can do 2-4, but he cannot be a POA defender or rim protector – the two most valuable defenders on your team. He shot .343 from three last year.
Who were they bidding against? Dumb dumb dumb extension.
Nah I love Sochan but $18-$22M is the range
I think Sochan has showed us he’s worth 15M-22M /year max. I hope he can perform to those numbers
