How Alohi Gilman Could ‘Maximize’ Kyle Hamilton | Baltimore Ravens Final Drive

This week, the Ravens made two big additions to their secondary, bringing in veteran safeties Alohi Gilman and CJ Gardner Johnson. And while both players bring experience and playmaking ability, their arrival could mean something even more important for Baltimore’s defense. More freedom for Kyle Hamilton. Hamilton missed last week’s game against Houston with a groin injury, but he returned to practice this week. And when he’s on the field, he’s been Baltimore’s ultimate chess piece. Since entering the league in 2022, Hamilton’s ability to line up anywhere, deep in the slot, or around the box, has made him one of the NFL’s most unique defensive weapons. But injuries have limited his flexibility this season. Our Darius Washington’s Achilles tear back in May forced younger players like Malachi Starks and Susi Kane into bigger roles. And with multiple cornerbacks sidelined in week five, the Ravens options in the secondary have been thin. And that’s where Gilman and Gardner Johnson come in. Gilman started all five games for the Chargers this season before the trade, totaling over 20 tackles and three passes defended, and his arrival could stabilize the back end of this defense. In LA, Gilman’s steady presence at deep safety allowed star Derwin James Jr. to move closer to the line of scrimmage where he could be more disruptive. While the Ravens are hoping for a similar effect with Hamilton, obviously know Kam could play all across the secondary. Um, and he’s very effective everywhere else. Um, not just in the back end, but up close to line of scrimmage. So, the better players you’re able to put back there in the back end definitely frees him up. And that’s exactly what Baltimore needs right now. Through five games, the Ravens defense has kind of struggled to generate those splash plays both against the run and through the air. But when Hamilton plays close to the line, he makes things happen. In 2023, in Mike McDonald’s defense, Hamilton was primarily the top nickelback in three safety looks. That year, he had three sacks, four interceptions, and a defensive touchdown. And now newest Raven Alohi Gilman is ready to help unlock that version of Hamilton again. And the chemistry is already there. The two were teammates and the starting safety duo at Notre Dame in 2019, bringing that familiarity and trust back to Baltimore secondary. Hopefully we can get him the better best ops possible to for him to thrive and flourish. And um you know I I just you know just being the being the best version of me being a ball hawk being a guy who’s always around the ball and just commanding the defense and um you know I’m excited to do that. For a defense searching for identity and playmakers this could be the spark it’s been missing. With Gilman’s communication and range on the back end and Hamilton unleashed once again around the football. Baltimore could start looking like the aggressive, dynamic, unforgiving defense it was built to be. That’s it for today. We’ll see you again tomorrow. [Music] [Music]

The Ravens believe the pairing of safeties Alohi Gilman and Kyle Hamilton could have a big effect on their defense.
