The Carolina Hurricanes Visit “The Pond” to Take on some Ducks
The road trip continues on as the Carolina Hurricanes head down to Southern California on Thursday night to do some duck hunting against the Anaheim Ducks. Can they continue their winning streak, making it four in a row? Well, only time will tell and we’ll talk all about that here on a Thursday edition of Locked on Hurricanes. You’re Locked on Hurricanes, your daily podcast on the Carolina Hurricane. Part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. Welcome to the Thursday edition of Locked on Hurricanes. On the Thursday edition of the pod, we’re going to be talking about Kane’s players to watch as they take on the Ducks Thursday to keep their winning streak up and making it four games in a row to start off their road trip 2 and 0. Also, we’re going to be talking about Ducks players that the Hurricanes need to contain because they have won their last two games and they have some guys that are putting up some decent numbers already through the first three games. And then what are the keys of the Hurricanes to get their fourth win of the season? Well, before we start all of that, today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time. Download the Game Time app. Create an account and use code lock on NHL for $20 off your first purchase. Now, we all know Tuesday night, the Carolina Hurricanes won five to one against the San Jose Sharks, scoring three goals in the second, scoring two in the third in route to their three nothing or their third straight win. Brandon Busy, amazing job. 16 of 17 saves in the net for 941 save percentage and pretty much 13 guys put up points that night. So the Carolina Hurricanes are spreading the wealth when it comes to putting p putting pucks in the net and putting points on the board. Now Kane’s players to watch obviously the ones that you know the familiar faces you know Seth Jarvis has four points Taylor Hall Shane Gospar Sebastian Aaho bot you know the bottom six you know they’re doing their jobs too you know Eric Robinson’s got three points Jordan Maruk’s got three points you know so they’re you’re seeing some points being shown up around here two guys I really want to talk about coming into this game that I think that are really due for some points is Nikolai Eers and Andre Fetchikov. So far through the first three games, they have not gotten any points. Eers is a minus one. Andre Fetchov is a plus one. Now, this isn’t to sound the alarm type of thing. I just know that for at least Eers that it’s just he hasn’t gotten the puck left. you’ve seen the chances have been there through the first three games because like I said, Aaho and Jarvis both have four points and I think you know that he is just unfortunate being able to get the puck luck to get a goal for himself or at least get an assist because right now it’s you know his linemates are playing up the points. So I think Elers is doing all the tangibles that you want to see out of him. It’s just unfortunately the finishing is just hasn’t really paid off for him in dividends and I’m not concerned about that. I think Nikolai Eers will get a point. Hopefully his first point comes against the Ducks to get off the schneide and kind of get rolling. Andre Spetchnikov his he’s been okay. I would say that when you look at Logan Stanco and Jackson Blake, both guys who have three points, a goal, and two assists each, they’re contributing very well. Andre is doing all the other things that are good to have, but I think for him it’s just the it’s a little bit inconsistent. Like I said, it’s three games and nothing to be too serious about, but you’re kind of hoping that you get the Andre Setchikov that we saw in the playoffs for the Hurricanes earlier this year. And for the top six to benefit, I mean, right now the Hurricanes lead the NHL with five goals per game. And that’s without your two left wingers on your top six, not putting up any points. But the rest of the top six have been, you know, four points each for the top line guys, three points each for the second line guys. So once you get your two left wingers rolling, I think the Hurricanes top six can be really lethal and very much unstoppable at the point. So the fact that they’re doing really well without Eers and Fetchov putting points on the board, I think that’s really impressive. But like I said, I’m not overly concerned. It’s just you kind of hope that maybe the Ducks game is where you see Fetch and Eers kind of get on the board. Like I said, they’re doing all the other small intangibles, right? Especially for Eers showing you speed, finding perfect lanes to put passes in. It’s just he hasn’t been able to even get a secondary assist or find the goal, but he has had the chances. He’s been there. He had five shots against the Sharks, which is unfortunate that Delkovich made all the saves against them. Now, the other guys I want to take a look at is your third. It would be your third defensive pairing, but with Jacob Slavven still out, we don’t know when he could be back. So, they’re kind of split right now, especially with well, not really. They’re split a little bit in terms of other other assignments, but they’re technically right now the second pair for the Hurricanes. That’s Shane Gossespare and Alexander Nikha. Now with slaving out, Rod actually moved those two guys up to the second pair and they have Mike Riley with Jaylen Chaffield as the quote unquote third pair right now. So even with Nikesian and Gossar moving up to the second pair. They’ve been playing really well so far for the Carolina Hurricanes. I know that was kind of one of the concerns that a lot of people had. How is this third defensive pairing going to be? The fact that you’re talking about two offensively minded guys as a pair and the fact that one indication still learn the system because he’s so young, you know, first full season in North America. How is he going to do learn their language and all that? in the name of Shane Gossipar who was paired with Shawn Walker all last season, you know, did lead the defenseman in points and goals and all that, but how is he going to be on his off side with the, you know, 23-year-old rookie Russian defenseman who’s still on a huge learning curve to learn the language, learn the system, you know, the life in the NHL, stuff like that. Well, so far, how about four points for Shane Gossip, one goal, three assists. Alexander Nesian, three assists. And here’s the thing, this is for this is per K’s stat brand. Alexander Keshan is with is on a three-game point streak to start his AHL career in the regular season. You definitely love to see that. And Shane Gosspear, he joins the list of defenseman to court at least a plus two and at least a point in their first three games of the season. Now Shane Gosses 2025, but then you have to go back to the Whalers era, Charlie Huie 1984 and Mark How of 1983. And that’s also provided by Kane’s stat brand. Great follow on X or Instagram if you’re on there. But Shane Gosspear has put himself in some great group of defenseman for the fact that they’re plus two and at least a point in each of the first three games. Like I said, Alexander Kean threeame point streak. He’s a plus five to start the season. Shane Gospare plus seven through the first three games. And that’s typically your third defensive pair now your second pair with Slavven out. And they have a combined seven points together. six of them being assists. For a pairing that some people were kind of concerned about, that’s a really good start for the Carolina Hurricanes. Having those two guys already kind of rolling in a sense that even with Shane Gosser playing on his off side, that is very huge for the Canes. the fact that those two are playing so well together already and the fact that you could kind of see the confidence grow especially in the case and and he threw a great hit on Dickensson on the other night against the Sharks and kind of also stood for his teammate and everything else and the fact that even with the Sharks took you know didn’t really like the Nikesha hit which was clean you know as good as the Hurricanes you know you saw them all sticking up for each other you know back you know Nikki of course that’s his nickname which great nickname by the way for Alexander Nikesha is Nikki So that’s pretty cool. But it’s really good to see that you that your quote unquote third pairing, who’s now the second pair with Slavven of the lineup, are producing and they’re already up to a plus 12 combined in the first three games. That’s pretty solid for your defense. And that’s including the fact you got Kandre Miller top pairing with Shawn Walker. And then you got Mike Riley who’s now sliding in along with Jaylen Chaffel. And then you have Charles Alex Lett is your seventh. Hopefully he gets his, you know, opportunity over the road trip. But I’d say look at the Fords. You got to look at at Eers and Sikov. Hopefully you see them get on the score sheet because, you know, they really want to as well. Especially Eers after signing the contract knowing he’s wanted to be one of the guys for the Hurricanes. And then on the defense, you got to look at the Kesha and Gajispar playing very well together as a unit going from the third to the second pair and still being able plus 12 through the first three games. And also Kajj Miller looks he looked really good, you know, the other night. I know he got a penalty early, but for the fact that he really stood on his own on the top defensive pairing with Walker first game in on the road trip, it’s very promising that even with Slavven out, you feel pretty good where the defense is at. Now, for them to stay good as they have been, they got to shut down some Anaheim Ducks. And who and who are those guys? Well, stick around and we’ll talk about that here in a second on a Thursday edition of Lockdown Hurricanes. The NFL season is here and Fandal has an offer you don’t want to miss. Now, we talked about the Carolina Hurricanes and who, you know, we should be watching for in terms of that side. You know, you’re talking about Spikov and Eers, Gosh Spar, and Nikeshin, a little bit of Kra Miller, too. But now, who are the Anaheim Ducks that the Hurricanes need to keep an eye on? Well, looking at the lines real quick, this is kind of what per Daily Face, this is what the Ducks are rolling with. Chris Crider with Leo Carlson, Alex Cler in your first line. Cutter Goautier, Mason McTavish, Bennett Senica on the second line. That is a very young second line. But in a second, I’ll tell you why that’s a very young but really good second line for the Ducks. Frank for Toronto, Michael Granland, Troy Terry is your third line. That says a lot too when you got for Toronto and Terry on your third line. That’s a very sneaky top nine for the Anaheim Ducks. And you got Russ Johnson, Ryan Pulling, and Nikita Nista Reno as your fourth. Now defense, Jackson Lakoma got a very good contract over the offseason with Rakov Gutis their captain. Olen Zelwagger, Jacob Trouba, Pavle Menchikov, and Drew Helison as your defensive pairings. And looking at the goalending, of course, it’s Lucas Dostall with Peter Morazzic, former Carolina Hurricane, who, you know, we’re in. were in when the Hurricanes made it into the playoffs for the first time after 10 years of the dark ages. But looking at the Ducks, Chris Carter does lead the team with five points, four goals, and an assist. However, he is a minus one. Same thing for Leo Carsman. Does have five points with a goal, but a minus two. So, even though two of your three guys on your top line have been putting up points, they are minuses. Even Alex Khorn one point in three games, but he’s a minus three. So that first line is a combined minus6. So even though they’ve won their last two games over the Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Jose Sharks, this is still a Ducks team that yeah, they can they can do something. They can still, you know, put up points on the board, but they’re also on the ice a lot for giving up points as well. Now I talked about that second line of McTavish, Goautier and Senakica. Senica and McTavish are both at four points. Beckett with two goals and two assists. McTavish with four assists. But Conor Goautier three goals and all those guys. Senica plus one. McTavish plus two. Goautier plus one. So, while your first line is kind of getting lit up right now for the Ducks, even in the fact they are putting points on the board, your second line of those three young guys together are still putting up pluses and they’re doing pretty solid overall. And going back to Crider real quick, four of his goals, three of them have been on the power play. So, that’s a little something to keep an eye on. If you give the Ducks an opportunity on the power play, Chris Krider has made teams pay so far this season. But after you look back through cutter Goautier, Grinland’s at three points. Troy Terry’s at three points. There’s a lot of ones on the board for the Ducks as well. They have a few guys who have not put up points compared to where the Hurricanes are at where they have 16 of their 20 guys have put up points. Only 12 of the 19 Ducks who have dressed have put up points. So I would say Ducks to contain. Krider, Carlson, Senica, McTavish, and Goautier. Those are your main guys to shut down. Now, Michael Grlin does have three assists along with Troy Terry, but I think it’s just your top six for the Ducks are ones to look out for, but don’t sleep on that third that third line for the Ducks either. So, those I say are a few guys you need to keep an eye on to when it comes to containing them as a group. But other than that, when you look at where they are at as a team, the Ducks do score four points a game, which is fourth in the NHL, but they also give up four goals a game, which is 27. So, there is that weird middle ground where the Ducks are a very good scoring team when they’re putting up four a game, but they also give up four a game as well, compared to the Hurricanes where they lead the NHL with five goals a game and they’re sixth in the league. I mean, goals allowed at 2.33. So, this will be a very interesting chess match between these two teams of where the Ducks will give up a lot of goals, where the Hurricanes score a lot, but the Hurricanes are a team that have been shutting down a lot of their opponents very early on. Yes, the first couple games they gave up three goals each, but they only gave up one against the Sharks. Now, in my opinion, I think the Ducks are on the more up and cominging path than the Sharks are. And I think the Ducks could be a team that if they kind of figure out some of their, you know, their top line for not getting scored on a lot, they can figure out a couple other things as well. Do I think they’re going to make the playoffs? They can make it probably close, but I think they’re on a better trajectory where the Sharks are at right now. So, I would say just like the San Jose game, you don’t want to look past this Ducks game to look at the LA Kings that are on Saturday. That’s the crazy part is the fact you go from Northern California to Southern California. You get all three California teams done one, two, three, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. That is a lot of hockey in the three game stretch. the fact you have every other day is a day off through the California portion of the trip before you go to Vegas, Colorado, Dallas, and all that stuff. Like I said, and you guys heard me say it a lot in this NHL that is now, anyone can beat anyone. The Hurricanes last year, yeah, they split the season series with the Ducks. They beat him later in the season 5 to2, but they lost to the same Ducks team last year minus some new faces that they’ve gotten recently on the Eric Stall jersey retirement in 3-2 in overtime. And I think this is where if you’re riding Baltimore and the Hurricanes, you want to change that narrative where you should beat teams that that you you should beat the teams that you need to beat. No disrespect to the Ducks. Same thing with the Sharks. these teams, everyone could beat anyone in this league. We all know that now. But if the Hurricanes want to be that team to take that next step and be the cup contenders that everyone thinks they can be, which I think they are, you have to take care of your business against a team like this. So, like I said, when you look at the Ducks, yeah, Krider’s got five points and four goals, but three of them are on the power play. But him, Carlson, and Ke a combined minus six. You should be able to shut the if you shut these guys down and score on that line. I think the Ducks are going to be in a very interesting spot because then you got to then they’ll have to rely on their second line which is a combined plus four with three very young players as a as a trio that that they might have to carry a little bit on this Ducks team. Their first line is getting scored on and shut down. And their defense their defense is okay, but can they figure that out as well? And right now in terms of what you’re looking at their defense, I mean you look at Drew Helison minus one. You look at Rakutis minus two. Zelwer minus two. Menchikov minus one. Trouba isn’t even surprisingly enough. But then you also have Jackson Lome is the only plus one of the group for the defense. So, like I said, if the Hurricanes can exploit, if they can shut down the offense, the the Fords, especially that first line, and they kind of get to the defense that right now is a lot of minuses across the board, I think they’re in a good spot. And looking at the goalender quick before we go to the keys of the game right now, even while Lucas Dol is one and one, he has a 308 goals against in an 893 save percentage. PM Morazzic in his one start did get the win. Here’s the crazy part though. 602 goals against and a 739 save percentage. Like I said, we’ll talk about it in segment three of the keys of the game, but that’s going to be a very big thing for the Hurricanes. If you can shut down the top guys for the Ducks and do what you need to do against the goalies, whoever it is in this game, this could be a good possibility of the Hurricanes going forward on the start the start of the season. And what are those keys to the game? Well, stick around. We’ll talk about it here in a second on a Thursday edition of Lockdown Hurricanes. Hockey season is officially here and nothing beats being in the arena for those opening games. Welcome back to segment three of locked on hurricane team every day. So we talk about the Kane’s players to watch the ducks to contain. But now what are the keys to the game? Now you kind of heard me talk about a little bit goals for goes against Hurricanes score five game first in in the NHL. Ducks fourth, four goals a game. Of course, a goal against 233, six for the Hurricanes, four for the Ducks, 27th in the league. But this, I think this first one, this first key is going to be the big component to how this game is going to go. Remember how I said in segment two that you look at Chris Crider’s three of his four goals are on the power play? Well, the Ducks right now second in the NHL on the power play at 36.4%. 4%. However, after the Hurricanes went five for five against the Sharks on Tuesday night, now their pen to kill jumped 10%. And they are now ninth in the league at 90%. Now, everyone’s used to them being top three. It’s only three games in. I think they’re going to get to the number one spot at some point, but you’re seeing a good trajectory. The team’s going up in the right direction. So, limit the penalties. Do not give the Ducks any opportunity to go on the power play. Do not have five penalties like you did against the Sharks. You have to limit that to two or less. If you can keep the Ducks off the power play, force them on you to what the Hurricanes do best, five on five hockey, I think the Hurricanes are in a great spot to get their fourth win of the season because like I said, Crider’s three of his four goals are on the man advantage. If the Hurricanes limit that group to maybe two power plays and shut them down like they did the Sharks, you’re almost neutralizing Krider at that point because right now he’s got one even strength goal in the first three games. Don’t give that man an opportunity on the power play because that’s what he’s been doing for the Ducks so far. Now for the Hurricanes, I’ll say this, the Ducks are 25th on the pill to kill at 71.4%. So, you would think that’s good for the Hurricanes to be able to take advantage of that when you look at the Ducks being at 71.4% on the pelvic kill. However, the Hurricanes have only had one power play goal in the first three games. They are currently at 9.1%. Yes, nine. A single digit before the point. 9.1% on the pill on the power play. 27th in the league. I’ll say this, not a great start for the power play. Yes, it’s three games in. Hopefully, it kind of changes the mojo a little bit, but you cannot always rely on your five on five to do the job for you. If you get multiple power plays, like they got three against the Sharks, you should take advantage of the man advantage. Like I said, it’s early on. However, you cannot be 9.1% when you have a top group like Elers, Aaho, Jarvis, Senikov, and Gosh. That group should be rolling. Yes, some guys are scoring. Two of two of those five guys haven’t scored a point yet, but you’d have to think at some point they’re due for one. Now the second group that’s the group that’s got the power play goal thanks to Keandre Miller with Stan Kovven Hall Blake Miller Walker. You can’t rely on your second power play to score the goals for you as well. I mean that it’s good that they got one but something’s got to ger on the power play. Yes. Like I said it’s early. Hopefully it changes right now but if this is if the Ducks and the Sharks games are the place to kind of get that rolling, this is where it needs to be. So like it’s kind of still and it’s kind of like a oneb to the 1 a point of limit the penalties get special teams to your advantage but you also got to be very aggressive on the power play. You got to get a man advantage goal. You really need to you cannot sit there and not get a power play goal. You definitely need that more than anything else. So if you’re the Carolina Hurricanes, limit the Ducks to maybe two power plays or less. But if you get a power play, you got to take advantage. You got to use it for your you gota use it for you. That’s what you really need to do. All that encompasses the point two. Gets to the goalie early. Doall and Morazzic have absurdly bad numbers. Yes, Doall is one and one, but his save percentage is sub900. His goals his goals against his goals against is sub 900. His save percentage or his goals against is over a three. His save percentage is under 900. That’s not good to start the season for him. Peter Morazzic over a six goals against and a sub 800 save percentage. It doesn’t matter who the Ducks put in that net. If you are the Carolina Hurricanes, you’ve scored on average five goals a game to start the season. Absolutely score early and keep your foot on the gas. Do not let them stay in this game. If you give 60 minutes of Hurricanes hockey right from the rip, score early, keep putting the pressure on, foot on the gas, this game should be put away early. Yes, you ended the first period 000 against the Sharks on Tuesday night. I would say that’s not a bad thing if you do it to the to the Ducks as well if you score in the second period. But if do not let one of those two goalies get hot early. If you put up 12, 13, 14 shots in the first period and they stop them all, they get warm, that’s going to make things very interesting. Now, like I said, if you have two goalies who are very cold right now, who are not having great starts to the season, regardless if it’s, like I said, two starts for one guy and one start for the other guy, get to them early. Start scoring early. Put the pressure on. Do not let them get comfortable. You got to have to put quality shots on net, get a couple goals early, and put this game away. If you put this game away early, you might have a good shot where you’re forcing the Ducks to make mistakes because then they’re going to have to really push. They get back into this game. If you go into the first period, first intermission up two nothing, you’re in a good spot for the Carolina Hurricanes. Even one goal, you’re in a good spot, but you got to get to the Ducks early with their goalending being very questionable to start this season. Yes, they’ve won two games in a row. However, this is a game where you should take care of business and get your fourth win of the season. That’s kind it’s kind of basic. Only two points, maybe a sub point there, you know, a 1A, 1B with a lot of special teams and stuff like that. But the second point, get to the goalie early because then you’re setting yourself up to have a a night where you’re getting your fourth win on the season and you continue this road trip 2 and 0. But those are the keys to the games. Let me know in the comments below if you’re on the YouTube side of things. How do you feel about the keys of the game? What are you looking for when it comes to the Carolina Hurricanes in this game against the Ducks on Thursday night as they look to go 4-0 in the season and go 2 and 0 on the road trip. For me, special teams has got to be key for the Hurricanes. Limit their power plays, but take advantage of yours and then get to the goalies early 60 minutes right from the rip. Foot on the gas. Do not let them in this game. Do not let them get comfortable. Put this thing away early. It should be interesting on Thursday night as another Canades after dark with a 10 p.m. start time on FanDuel Sport and 99.9 the fan as always with Mike and Trip on the call.
