They make it two in a row, beating the Blues 83 in St. Louis. The Hawks get goals from McKev, Riel, Riel, Nazar, Dickinson, Donado, Terrainan, and Green. Connor Bard with three assists. Alex Vic with three assists. Lucas Reichel with three points. This was top to bottom probably the best game the Hawks have played. I mean, look, there have been there have been games that we’ve covered that they have won and they have won handily, but you can always kind of those games you could always kind of go into the numbers and find like, h it really was closer than it looked or maybe they didn’t deserve this one. This they kicked the crap out of the Blues. He beat them up and down the ice. Whatever category you want to pick, pick it. The Hawks dominated this game from start to finish. This was a buttkicking. Uh and and big of the Blackhawks to make an 8:52 p.m. St. Louis time start time tonight. Worth staying up for. Yeah. Um especially this early in the season. Uh just just a game that if you if you sat down, watched it as a Blackhawks fan, uh thoroughly enjoyable to see the way that they’re playing, um the way that they just the style of play, the guys that stepped up tonight. It’s all the guys that you want to play big roles, to have big moments. Um, and you do it on a national broadcast. You do it on the TNT broadcast, which no offense to ESPN, but some offense, uh, is a superior broadcast and significantly so holds more weight in the hockey world. I agree. And not only was this, if this game happened on CHSN, we’d still be having a great time cuz we’re Hawks fans. Yeah. What makes this game more important is that listen to how that panel talked about this Blackhawks team and look at the response across the hockey world for the people who paid attention to this game on national TV. 180 degree difference in how the Blackhawks are being viewed to begin this season to what they were last year. Last year it was Conor Bard cannot wait to get his butt out of town in Chicago. He hates it in Chicago. No one wants to go to Chicago. He’s got a bad attitude. He’s got a bad attitude. The team has no future. Body language. There’s nothing good coming out of Chicago. And look at San Jose and all their vibes. Look at this Blackhawks team. this game tonight. Not only is the national narrative influenced by this game, but I I I think it’s it’s a small sample, but I think this is going to be what this Hawks team, this is just scratching the surface of what this team can be. I I firmly believe that if this group it’s early game five, it’s a long season, but the efforts we’ve seen in all five games this season. Yep. The first, you know, first three games, you could have you could have said there’s a scenario in which they win each of those three games individually. Yep. They win their fourth game of the season and in their worst performance, find a way to win. Then their best performance of the season comes in game game five of the year. like this is a team that has shown a way to win each night. They’ve made it happen twice. I I think the expectations of this team have been woefully underelling what they what they have potential to be. Well, look, I I want to take some threw a lot at us there and I want to really focus on the fact that this game was on TNT and the fact that that crew holds so much sway and the fact that the young people who are consuming the NHL are doing so through TNT, social media, uh BR Open Ice, all those sort of places and all of the aggregation that is happening tonight right now on social media about this nationally broadcast Hawks game cuz if this is on CHSN you might see the Bard pass, you might see the Nazar goal, but this is their showcase game. TNT showing it off, talking about the Hawks intermission, interviewing Bard and Nazar postgame. We haven’t seen it. We came right on the air. Um, but I’m sure it’s been great. Everyone’s raving about it. Yeah, I’m seeing pictures now of the TNT broadcast of them simultaneously interviewing Bernard. You talk about like changing the narrative around the team. The players on the team see it too and they hear what’s being said about them and you want to talk. We joke all the time about the vibes and the Sharks and the vibes and the vibes and the vibes. The Hawks were nine points better than the Sharks last year. You wouldn’t you wouldn’t think so based on the conversation. Now all of a sudden the conversation shifts and the feeling about this team is totally different. And that’s the power of a national broadcast. That’s the power of someone like Paul Besonette. And whether he’s right, whether he’s wrong, whether he’s, you know, because I think last year with the Bard stuff, he was off base, but he said it and it has power. And those guys have the ability to influence public opinion. The public opinion of the Blackhawks right now is this is a young team to be reckoned with. This is a fast team to be feared. It’s a team that with their playing and clicking and firing all cylinders will give good teams problems on a nightly basis. And that’s what we talked about in the preseason. Look, don’t worry about points. Don’t worry about wins, losses, standings, all those things. worry about how it looks and how it has looked through five games has been night and day from the last three years. This is a different team. This is a team that is incredibly well coached, well disciplined. They’re now learning the system. They’re starting to get comfortable and starting to play with instincts in the system. And as Jeff Flashel said about the Tampa Bay Lightning penalty kill, I’m going to go back to this a lot. They struggled for the first month. Once they got in the rhythm of the new penalty kill, they were the best in hockey. As the Blackhawks get used to his system and his coaching and the demands of those things, they are going to get better and better and better. And look, there’s going to be games this year that come where they’re going to look very young. They’re going to look overmatched. There’s going to be games where they’re on the other side of a game like this. But most nights, they’ve played five. In four of the games, I’ll say four and two/3s because that first period in Florida was rough. Four and two/irds of their first five games, they have been right there with the teams are playing. Yeah. Uh I I I think this is this is a group that is playing for each other. I think this is a group that like across the board is is bought in. And that’s not what we had last year. I as much as we defended Seth Jones and and you know his position with the Blackhawks and how you know what he did on the ice and all that stuff. You know, we heard it as the season went on from some of the players and things that they said veiled or not. Um it wasn’t a cohesive group in the locker room. You have that now. We had it at in the final quarter of last season when it was post trade to deadline. It was, you know, Nazar was here, Renzel showed up. Like that portion of the season, it completely felt different. And it’s it’s rolled into this start of this season. It is a group that is playing for each other. It is a group that the chemistry and the vibes are great right now. Yes. And they and they they came together through the preseason. um and training camp, they’ve they’ve bought in to Jeff Blashel’s uh system. I think you’re seeing those small things putting up eight goals is is amazing, right? Yeah. But the process of how you got to those to that point, the way that they played fast, they played within their structure and within their system. This wasn’t a game where, you know, your your track meet and your your yourself, you know, twoon ones exchanging both ways and stuff like this was a game where you were able to set up some offense. You’re able to, you know, play make some plays with speed and off the rush. Make some plays where you set up and you get traffic and you get a goal. Um, like there there’s just a lot of different ways that this group was able to be successful tonight. And I and I I think it itarkens back to Blashole and um, you know, the habits that he’s trying to instill. And as Jason Dickinson said um the other night or in the morning skate before um uh I think it was before Monday’s game, he just said like you’re they’re trying to still unravel some habits that over the last few seasons they’ve kind of let slide. So, not only are you working towards what Blashel is preaching and and and trying to instill, you’re also kind of unraveling some things from your own from your own game that maybe have been ingrained for the last few seasons. So, I think you’re seeing that happen faster than maybe anyone expected. Um, everyone it it top to bottom tonight, everyone was effective. It’s a It’s a group game and when you have the group working like they like they did tonight, then your top stars are able to perform. Uh Velic, three primary assists tonight. Very good game for him. Connor Baddard, three uh three-point game. Uh Lucas Reichel, hell of a way to take take advantage of an opportunity tonight. Could have had four points, five points easy. Three three-point game, two goals. Um his first two goal game in the NHL. Uh you had Frank Nazar just absolutely uh auraing his way uh into the hearts of of hockey fans around the world. Like just it it’s just clicking for this group and I’m I’m very very happy, very excited and I’m I’ve never hopped on the ride more uh than than than tonight. I I want everyone to think back to the way we felt 10 and a half months ago, January 1st, 2025, as that game at Wrigley Field was happening, and the Hawks were being embarrassed December 31st. December 31st, sorry. Utterly embarrassed on national television against the same against the same team on a night where the Hawks could have used the opportunity to say, “Hey, look at these young players. Look what we got. They laid the biggest egg. The coaching staff had no answers. The veterans in the locker room after the game were pretty much speechless. They were a bit to blame for it, too, but they were pissed and embarrassed after the game. Taylor Hall was like holding back tears. I want you to think about the feeling of that night and the feeling of today. And I’ll point to them. Apologies to Jeff Washel because we were all worked up for David Carl. We all wanted David Carl really bad and I still think it would have been a great hire if they made it and but he decided to stay at Denver. Props to him. Enjoy your money and easy life. I would do the same thing. Um Jeff Flash’s come in here along with Mike Valuchcci, along with Michael Pekka and has instilled a culture which is a word we started rolling our eyes at last year. Stop talking about the culture. The culture sucks. The culture is you’re losing night after night. The culture has been changed by this coaching staff who came in. I I I would first practice they all take the ice together. They skate four laps. Flash blows a whistle. Not even four. Let’s go. We’re getting going. We’re starting practice. You just made a mistake. Touch the wall. Boom. From jump. the tone is set that you’re not going to take the ice at your leisure and we’re going to skate around for a while and then like all right let’s get into a drill here after about 5 minutes and then we’ll kind of mosey through the drill. Everything has been done with a purpose since day one of Jeff Flash’s arrival and it has made a world of difference. The team has bought in and look is the roster that different from what it was at the end of last year? No, not really. You added Andre Burkovski. Frank Nazar is here full-time, but it’s pretty much the same dudes. Leadership matters as Cat says in the chat. It matters. And these guys can turn around when they’re on the bench when things are going badly and go and know that that guy behind them and those all those guys behind them have a plan. Have have a plan, have their back, and it’s a belief in they know what they’re talking about. Yes. like that’s that makes a a huge difference and believing in your coaching staff goes a long way for a player. I can speak in the equivalency of high school football. I think the statute of limitations is expired on that. I can speak freely. Yeah. Um I played on a high school football team that we did not believe in our coaching staff and it showed. We were also pretty bad but also the coaching staff thing was was was a problem. It matters. Yeah. So, I I think this group buying in, believing uh and and not only buying in and believing through words, it’s through actions, too. The way that they’ve played through these these first five games, you already have an a lot of tape to go back and look at and say, “This works. Play this. Play this style. Buy into this style. This will get us to the next step. this will allow us to take that next step in this process um and go from maybe to believing Yeah. And and and Nick Felino uh said that a few a few games ago. Um not just believing that they can be a good team, but showing that they are a good team. Yep. And they did that tonight. No doubt. All right, we got to hit the break zone. We’re a little bit late. We have almost 900 people watching the postgame show at 11:45 at night on a Wednesday. This team and this city is ready to reunite in a big way. Yes, they are. And I hope tonight is a launching pad. Remember the good old days when soda pop had a nice little kick to it and it wasn’t all to make your tummy feel better full of probiotics or you weren’t forced to drink kombucha or almond milk or oat milk or all this weak crap. Well, guess what? Strong soda is still there. RC Cola has not changed its stripe since 1905 because it didn’t need to. It’s the same bold, crisp flavor it’s always been. RC Cola, it tastes like a punch in the throat. There’s nothing better than RC Cola and Tavern style pizza. This is scientifically proven. True. So do yourself a favor. Grab some RC at your local store. Grab some Tavern style pizza at your favorite pizza place. The perfect Chicago marriage. RC Cola. and and and tavern style pizza. RC cola is not a soft drink, just damn good cola. All right, we’re back on CHL Blackhawks and Hawks one. So, you know what? It’s time for We got to fire up ours. Here he comes. Yeah, he’s going. There it is. It’s a little off. Oh, he’s out of frame, but we had to we had to rush it. We forgot. We’re not in the habit of noodle arm guy yet. So, we got to know right under the lnt and culture is the middle spot for us. We’ll keep that in mind. But when the Hawks win, wavy noodle arm guy comes out and uh and enjoys the show with us. So, oh, in studio B, it’s worse. It’s like hitting us in the head. Oh, yeah. Um but yeah, so there you go. Hawks win. Noodle guy comes on. Uh a little bit of a change in the scoring by the way. Tyler Berusi was credit carded with that goal. Oh, he was. Yes. So, uh Blic loses an assist. Um, Baddard picks up and so is Bertusi from Tervine and Bard on that one. So, that is the official scoring on that goal. Bard keeps his but So, there you go. So, a little bit of a change of the scoring, but pretty good nonetheless. Um, can I say something? Yes. Do you know who has the most goals scored in the NHL right now? The mo like as a team? Yeah. I’m going to say the Hawks. They scored eight tonight. Yes. Yeah. Chicago Blackhawks have 18 goals scored uh this season, the most of any team in the NHL. Now, there’s only two teams that have played. Nope, just four teams that have played five games. One of them is the Florida Panthers. Okay. And the Blackhawks have more goals. Therefore, you know, where are the goals going to come from? Said Nor McCyver. Well, just give it a year and they’ll start showing up. Yep. There you go. Plus four goal differential this season. Tied for third best. uh in the NHL. Yeah. I through five games you have two wins, two losses, and an overtime loss. Those three losses are by a combined three goals. They’ve they’ve been each in in each of those games. Like through five games, I have I I have no and I’m I’m sure I’m way above my skis on this statement, but I have I have no worries about this team right now. I can’t concentrate. It’s very loud. Okay, there we go. I have no can’t concentrate at all. I have no worries about this team um being able to compete night in and night out and and in every game have a path to find a way to win. You want to play with speed, this team can do it. You want to get nasty, you want to get gritty, this team’s not going to back back down from you. Conor Bernard, yeah, is 510, 190 lbs, like 5 foot nothing. 10 and nothing. Not Not a big dude, right? As far as NHL standards go, Colton Perico is 66, 235. Big dude in the NHL. And he was in his face, not backing down. Nope. You’re going to try him. You’re going to try and, you know, Was it Walker that got in his face too early? Tucker, not Kyle Tucker. Um, what’s what’s the Blues guy? It doesn’t matter. Something Tucker. Can I say Boner on the show? Sure. Yeah. I don’t a person who’s made of bones. Sure. Yeah, that’s his name. That’s him. Yeah. Um Bedard has been in the middle of scrums. He’s not backed down from anybody. Uh you saw on the Frank Nazar goal, you know, Blues jump him after running into one one of the two goalies that they played tonight. I forget who it was. Um but the team jumps in after it allowing Frank Nazar to celebrate his goal. Uh and and they’re just they’re not going to back down. And you want to play a a not aesthetically pleasing, mucky game like they did Monday. They won that game. Yeah. They have ways to beat you. And that is different than what we’ve seen in the last three seasons where they found ways to lose games. This team has different ways to beat you. It’s a lot different. I mean, I think that we still have the post-traumatic stress disorder cuz it’s 83 and we’re like, “Or it was 73.” It was 73. We get that third goal. We’re like, “All right, don’t take the clock.” Yeah, I looked at the clock. I was like, “There’s still eight minutes left, guys.” Like, you could lose this. Don’t do it. But yeah, it’s I this team, it really feels a lot different. Like I was I was not expecting five games into this season to feel this confident and and they they have they have shown everything so far through five games gives me a lot to believe in moving forward. And more enforcements are coming. That’s the other thing is you’ve got Oliver Moore who’s doing everything well in Rockford. Yeah, good start. You’ve got uh Anton Fondell who’s tearing up the SHL. You’ve got uh Bakov Nester off to a good start in college scored a hat-tick uh last week. You’ve got Mason West throwing four touchdowns a game. He’s looking great for looking great on the grid iron. Yeah. Yeah. Like there’s just there’s uh well and Roman cancer lead the KHL in goals. Like it’s just there is a lot on the way and as we talk about this season, you know, when people talk to me about the Hawks that don’t follow the team super closely like, oh, you know, what can I expect this year? And I I try to explain like this is really the first year and actually Danny W said this yesterday when you asked what the expectation is and how does he measure success this year. He said this is the first year where we’re really looking at NHL performance. For a while it was like asset you know gaining assets, getting the draft picks, getting draft capital, those sort of things. This is the first year where you really say, “Okay, this is where we expect progress at the NHL level from young players, from veterans, from coaches to everything. And while it feels like they’ve been bad for a long time, because they have, it’s important to remember that this process, this Kyle Davidson process began in 2022. It was not 2017. It was not 2019. Just because you missed the playoffs doesn’t mean you are rebuilding. They weren’t actively trying to rebuild. You don’t trade for Seth Jones and Mark Andre Flurry if you’re rebuilding. Right. So the tear down, getting rid of Kane, getting rid of De Brinkit, walking away from Jonathan Taves and he walked away from them, too. He took some years off. Fine. That was 2022. So you’re finally starting to see now this is step one of the rebuild, right? this is or of the of the road back from the rebuild where you’re finally getting your top prospects in the NHL full-time aside from Bard, Nazar, Renzel, Levinov, etc. with more to come. The next two or three years are going to be adding more and more and more as these veterans age out of their contracts. Like this is how if things go the way that Kyle Davidson believes they’re going to go and you can ask him behind a microphone. you can ask him over a beer, he’s going to tell you the same thing. He believes in this prospect group that he’s put together. Um, and it and if it pans out, even 50% of what they believe these players will be turn into what they believe they’re going to be, this team is going to be a force to be reckoned with for a long time. And we’ve talked about this, too, especially in the changing landscape of the NHL where big free agents don’t just become available anymore. And you can’t just buy yourself out of suckage. You have to work your way out from being a a bottom tier team. You can’t just free agent your way out of things anymore because those game changers, those needle movers don’t become available. So now you have to do it through the draft and through trades. And he’s made a lot of his draft picks are succeeding at whatever level they’re at. and he’s got a ton of draft assets and capital that he can deal if he needs to to acquire a player now or two years from now or three years from now to put the team over the hump. They’re in really good position to be a strong team for a long time and this is the way you do it. Like and I don’t know I wonder maybe he saw this coming. Maybe he saw the free agent change coming and knew he had to change something but uh they’re the Hawks are in really good shape and really impressive. This is just a this is just a taste of what I think it’s going to be two, three, four years from now. This is just the beginning of this and that’s what’s so exciting about it, right? And look, were there still things in this game that frustrated? Yeah. Like Conor Bernard, stop passing to Colton Doc all the time. Stop trying like, you know what I mean? Like you’re Connor Bernard Burkovsky, too. You guys shoot. Let Colton go to the net and put it in. Jason Dickinson. A couple rough passes in the first period. It led to scoring chances the other way. This was not a perfect game. Although almost 900 people in the chat, almost 500 likes. It feels like a perfect game cuz it’s been so long since we felt this way. The peaks outweigh the valleys. Yep. Tonight. And oh, big time. And that is I think that is the microcosm of what you want this season. Do you want as the season goes along for the peaks to outweigh the valleys in a game sense for player performance uh and and and for team performance? And if you get it if you get that with a lot of these young players, uh but if you get that across the board with this team night in and night out, you’re going to get it across the board with games and then that translates to the season having higher and more frequent peaks uh than than you do the valleys. And I I I think this team has the ability uh to to perform that way. I I I think you you look at, you know, you were talking about with Dickinson and during the game, you’re like in a game like this, you know, especially early on when it was one- nothing, 1-1, 2-1, 22, like when it was kind of getting a little little screwy there. you can you were saying like Dickinson needs to be a guy that you can put out there you can trust needs to be like that little security blanket where it’s like hey things are going to be okay Jason Dickinson’s out there we’re gonna settle down and he wasn’t really doing that and then he gets the goal seems like his his game started to kind of like get back into that groove after scoring that goal like sometimes like if if if this team and and these players have the ability to pull themselves back from those games and not let you know small plays snowball in the wrong direction. They’re going to keep themselves in in a lot of games this year, which is which is not what they did last year for the most part and the season before that where it was just like if if early on you got the sense like this team is is is fighting it early on in a game. They had no way of coming back from it. Well, and as Jim Montgomery said, the Blues are going to take over this game any time now. Still waiting on waiting on that one. Yeah. Well, just real quick on Jason Dickson before he hit the break zone for the last time. Bounced back, led the team in all metrics. 21 shot attempts, four with him on the ice, only 11 against. Uh he was the highest rated Hawk. Right behind him, Matt Grizzlick, uh 61.90, Corsy, uh Donado McKay of Bertusi, and then Ardam Lechnov. We should spend some time talking about some of the underlying performances in this game, too. And we do owe Lucas Reichel a segment. By the way, game pucks real quick. I’m nominating Lucas Reichel, Mario. Uh, you said you said I went with Connor Bard and Sarah Frank Nazar. Frank Nazar. Get your votes in. We’ll reveal the game puck winner at the end of the show. We are very close to 500 likes. Let’s get there before this break ends. You’ve got two minutes to hit the sm to smash that like button 22 times. Let’s go. Let’s make it happen. Two minutes starting now. Most people are not great at balancing their finances. That includes me. I have not been great at balancing my finances. Uh but then I found Monarch Money. We agree with you. That uh that request has been made several times. Test my tickles. $10 says, “Money.” Thank you. We like money. Appreciate that. Thank you for the money. Uh $2 from Corey who super chats us seemingly every show. Thank you, Corey. He says, “Wayak Kaiser was awesome tonight defensively in my opinion. Wyatt Kaiser has been awesome defensively all year.” And if you uh follow hockey stats on Twitter, they posted Domision’s model for defensive rating and Wyatt Kaiser is the NHL’s top rated defenseman. Pretty good. That is good. Uh Mcloven, five bucks. Baddard and Nazar just gave a fantastic postgame interview. Nazar swore. Biz walked back the pond comment. Both Baddard and Nazar fired up about winning. Good stuff there. Freaking love it. I also hope that Paul Besonette apologized to his producer who he bust tossed for saying that uh Lucas Reichel scored a goal when indeed Lucas Reichel scored a goal. Maybe if you watched the game you were covering instead of getting pink eye uh you wouldn’t know that it was Lucas Reichel who scored. That’s just me. Sorry, I’m a producer and I hate that crap. Brandon $5 says Jody Shel was phenomenal. Great breaking down our Dzone structure. Jeff Flash will change the intensity and effort level. A lot of work still to do. Yep. Good points as always by Brandon and Cat Klene with a $20 super chat. Cat says, “You guys, I’m tipsy. I just bought $40 of super chats with no commentary.” Where’s the Where’s the other one? Don’t worry, she only sent 20. Okay. Okay. Don’t worry, Cat. You’re good. The other 20 can go to your drinks. Save it for a Save it for a night where the Hawks get pounded and we need it. Sure. We need that pickup. Uh Wyatt Kaiser tonight. One, two, three, four. Uh fifth from the bottom in blue lines, purple lines in the hockey stack cards, but that’s because the Blackhawks had uh a dozen positive skaters tonight. So, you know, pretty good. It wasn’t quote unquote wasn’t his night being the 12th best for 12th best skater of the night. But uh I mean everyone both analytically and I testly I I testly yeah uh I testicle passed pass the uh the test tonight. All right. Now if you have been with us since day one, you remember Connor’s Corner. Well, if this is your first postgame show of the year, we’re introducing a new segment. It’s called the Fred House on Matt on Madison. Let’s go. This is my buddy’s house. Stay away from those socks. Put on gloves. Lucas Reichel is our featured frat boy tonight. Two goals, one assists in 1311 of ice time. A lot of that ice time came late in the game as they were trying to get him the hattick. Yeah. And here’s my hot take for the night. Ryan Donado, selfish teammate. He had Lucas Reichel wide open right there and did not pass to him. So, uh, no, I’m kidding. But Lucas Reichel, here’s the full line. Two goals, one assist, plus two, five shots on goal, six shot attempts. This is the Lucas Reichel that we have been dreaming about. God, we have seen it in spurts. I can’t wait to use this game for the next six months of analyst and analysis on Lucas. That Yeah, but that St. Louis game though, that’s in there somewhere, man. No, I mean he like I like like I said before, he got the opportunity to get into the lineup and he grabbed it by the collar and and shook a three-point game out of it. And that’s that’s awesome. I’m I’m very happy to see that for him. And like that’s talk about a player that needed a game like that. Like he’s on the cusp of this lineup. They’re going 11 and seven. He’s getting the short end of the stick. the game, first game of the year, he gets in to the lineup, he gets six minutes. Like, yeah, that’s a guy that needed a performance like tonight. And the the goals he scored were, you know, really nice tip in. Yeah. A a horrible angle, but he but he made the shot work. Like, that was that was great. I’m very happy for him to uh have the game he did tonight. First ever twogoal game uh in the NHL. And Ben Pope’s got a quote from him. Uh Riel said he was motivated by finally being in the lineup tonight. Uh quote, “I just tried to play free and have fun and that’s what I did.” Good idea. Do that again. Lucas Riel having fun. I’m looking to see if we have any uh postgame video yet. Not yet. Not this that has been emailed yet. But um yeah, I mean I I I think Well, I think Ben might be the only person there. So, um, but yeah, it’s it’s it’s great to see, uh, for Riel to to get in and especially, you know, 13 minutes of ice time in the 11 forwards configuration. Like, it’s not good. It’s it’s it’s a it’s a non-traditional lineup setup. Um, they’re doing it pime I think primarily to even things out on the defensive side. Uh, but I think, you know, tonight you you got a glimpse of, you know, how you can kind of play different matchups and um it worked out for Riel. So, I’m I’m I’m happy for him. Yeah. It’s uh you have to imagine that has to feel so good for him. Yeah. and he, you know, a lot was made about Baddar’s work over the off season and Lucas Reichel was doing the same thing by all reports, working on his work, his game around the boards, but like you said, didn’t get in, then got in and hardly played, gets an opportunity today with Felino out and really takes advantage of it. And as we move forward here, if he can put together, I’m not saying every game is going to be three points, but if he is a factor every game, he will find himself getting opportunities on the top six. Maybe he takes Colton Doc’s spot for a period or a game or whatever it might be and see and see if what kind of magic they can make happen with Bard and Burkovski. Like, I’m here for it. Yeah, that ch that team that line’s going to give up a lot of chances the other way, but it’s a lot of firepower and a lot of speed on one line. So, the best thing Lucas Reichel can do is keep playing the way he played tonight. And what I like about it, too, is that tipped goal in front of the net. Yeah, the first goal, soft goal, yes, probably should have been stopped by Holer, but he’s driving the net with speed and he’s aggressively saying, “Look, I got a shot here. I’m not going to try to force a pass. I’m going to put this puck on net. That’s it.” That is what they have wanted to see from him. And engagement for 60 minutes. And every time he was on the ice, he was engaged. Part of it was he had two goals and wanted that third one. I get it. Yeah. You get motivated. But like that’s it. That’s all the co whatever coach you want to point to. No one has ever denied that Lucas Reichel has talent. No one has ever said, “Oh, he just doesn’t have the ability to play at this level.” No, we know that’s not true. E Lucas Reichel’s biggest attractor, whoever it might be out here in CHD, Blackhawks land, they know he’s got the talent to succeed at this level. It’s up here for him and it’s here for him in his heart, right? like if he can put out an effort like he did tonight. He’s gonna stay. He will stay in the lineup. There’s no need to trade him right now. I know they’ve been talking about it for months, but there’s no harm in keeping him around and seeing what he can do. Um I hope that he changed some minds and I hope he gets another chance and I hope Friday against Vancouver he puts together another good effort and keeps making his case for more and more opportunity. I just want to give a quick shout out. Uh Holly, one of our dieards, she is not in the chat, probably because she is sleeping. Uh she lives uh I believe she’s from the UK. I think she’s running down the street screaming right now. She probably fainted from the second goal. She is she has been here since day one. And I just want to give her a quick shout out because this is the best game she’s probably will ever see. As as much as of a big night as this was for Lucas Riel, it might have even been bigger for Holly. It’s bigger for Holly. So, I just wanted to give her a special shout out cuz she’s she’s in the chat almost every day. Yeah. Uh, some comments, too, like what I was just saying about Riel. BJD says, “That’s why we’re annoyed at him.” Um, SMV25 says, “Richel has massive talent, but he needs to sustain uh the consistency.” Adrian says, “We want to love Riel.” Yes, the Hawks fans want to embrace Lucas Reichel. He is a super likable kid. Yeah, ask my daughter. Ask Kie. He’s got a big fan base in this town. Um, people want to like him. They do. Uh, but it’s, you know, it’s up to him to prove it. This is another, like you said, Mario, I hope this isn’t a game we keep referencing four or five months from now. If we can only just go back to that night in St. Louis, it doesn’t have to be three points every night, but just be a factor. And he was certainly a factor in this one. Well, and someone pointed out the chat, I can’t I can’t remember who, but they they said on the tip goal, he’s going to the front of the net after winning a puck battle in the corner, right? Like not a thing you see often from Lucas Reichel in his game, but that was something that he took from the end of last season in the in the, you know, end of the year media availability. He was talking about like, well, I need to work harder along the boards and be stronger in battles. So, that’s something I’m going to take into the off season and specifically work on. And I I I think even for for a player like him, it’s not necessarily you have to go in there and become a grinder, but to just be stronger, to be more competitive, and to just go to those areas. Having a a willingness to just go to those areas is half the battle. I remember talking to Cory Perry in the brief time he was a Blackhawk and it’s it’s a guy that’s been a league MVP. Yeah. 50 goal scorer 50 goal scorer and you know at the back half of his career was no longer a 50 goal sniper but still a guy that was effective in scoring and he did it in the 5 to 10 foot radius around the net and he said that there’s a me there there’s something that has to be in your DNA to really want to go to that area and be successful. And I’m hoping that this this group, this Blackhawks group un understands that they’re not learning it directly from him now since he hasn’t been around the team and hasn’t been around these guys uh this group. But that is a lesson that I think a lot of these guys can can learn and that is something that you can you can have ingrained in you is that desire to go to those hard areas and want to win those battles because teams that do that. Mhm. They win the Stanley Cup. Like playoff style hockey is not beautiful hockey. No, it’s it’s dirty. It’s gross. It’s painful. And but it wins. Yeah. You’re not you don’t see a lot of globe trodder-esque plays in the playoffs. No. I mean, we’ve we’ve seen uh you know, really high offense, high-scoring teams go into the playoffs and get bounced. Think about the the the Washington Capitals of the late 2000s and and the 2010s. Yes, they got the the cup in 2018, but how many times did those Capitals teams feel like, oh, they’re just gonna light it up, you know, Ovetkin and Mike Green and Backro and those those teams and they could never get past the second round because they would run into the Penguins who were just more built to win playoff hockey and would win those battles. Well, that’s I I I think I think this is a young group, but I think this is a group that understands those habits, those tendencies, and those things that are going to make them successful. And for a guy like Riel to be able to go into a board battle, come out of the corner, go to the front of the net, get a tip, and get a goal. Like, the proof is right there. You can go back and watch that play time and time again and say, “Look, it works.” Yeah. Do it. Remember we had Petey told us a story once, our buddy Steve Peters, like when he was working with the Coyotes. He said when things were going bad, they would just all over the building in Arizona, they would just roll highlights of the Coyotes playing well, right? Scoring big goals. Like that’s in film room tomorrow or tonight, whatever it’s going to be. I want Jeff Flashel showing Lucas Reichel that sequence over and over and over again because look, is he ever going to be Dino Ciserelli? Is he ever going to be Todd Bertusi? No. No. And I don’t think anyone’s asking him to go turn into an elite power forward. That’s not what he’s built to do. But the the what separates guys, you think about small players, right? Like you think about a guy like Martin St. Louie who was very small but very gritty. Theo Flurry was 5 foot6 and was one of the toughest mfers to ever play this game and was fearless. Right. You just have to have the willingness. Then you look at guys like Redeem Verbata or Sergey Barrison who had a lot of skill but just not the willingness to go where you needed to go to have success in this league. You said it, man. When you watch playoff hockey, most goals are either deflected or scored right in front. There’s not a lot of razledazzle in the playoffs. And you you mentioned the Penguins versus the Capitals. The way Sydney plays versus the way Ovuchkin plays, that’s the difference is Sydney Crosby, one of the greatest players to ever put on skates, will go out there and kill penalties and grind and play defensive hockey and win board battles and kill you in the faceoff dot and do all the little things needed. Plus, he’s got generational, you know, multi-generational offensive ability on top of all that. He’s a he is a perfect hockey player in that way. Whereas Ovuchkin, he would lay a big hit now and again cuz he was a big dude. But how how many times did you see the dead controller uh memes with him or That’s literally him. Yes. Or he’s like literally just parked Yeah. just parked in a circle waiting for the pass, which I mean it works. It’s worked. He’s going to score a thousand. That’s right. Of course. But it’s just But in the playoffs, you’re not going to get that time and space and and just to spin it back to the Hawks tonight, the sequence they showed, I think it was maybe right before the third period started of Conor Baddard uh backing. Mhm. uh standing up to the physicality, lifting sticks, taking pucks, doing those little things needed. And again, just as Riel is not going to be Dino Ciselli or Todd Bertusi, Conor Bernard’s never going to be Jonathan Taves or Patrice Berseron, but if you have that willingness to at least give it a shot, it makes a world of difference. Whereas the last couple years you’d see Bard kind of swat or maybe he would try to do what Bashel refers to as the poke and hope, Bernard is now engaged all the time when he’s on the ice. And it’s not just him trying to create opportunities to score. It’s I need to get this puck back. Yep. I mean, it’s it’s it’s why we were like really enthralled with Frank Nazar last season when he first got here is because it was like you saw the speed, you knew about, you know, the offensive flash, but it was also the defensive effort that he would put in. And you compared that to what you saw in the previous season in the previous season and two seasons for Connor Bernard where you know the offense is is there you know the skill is there the shot the creativity it’s it’s all there but the defensive side it was just like you know everyone wouldn’t shut up about plus minus and uh you know just the defensive effort wasn’t like you you just you weren’t going to get away with it. So then you bring in Nazar who’s is he a Selki winner? Not right now. But it’s the it’s the effort and the mindset to play that way to play on the defensive side of the puck. Uh and and be able to create that into offense that once Blashel took over and he’s talking about you know the winning hockey, the habits and all this stuff. You know, we were we we were talking about it in the, you know, in the summer and and into training camp, how Frank Nazar is probably going to quickly become one of Jeff Blashel’s favorite players. Yeah. because of the way that he plays and the engagement and and effort that he’s putting in defensively. Uh while being a highly skilled offensive player and I think like you said, you’re seeing it through the first five games, you’re seeing that that change in Bard where it is more of the, you know, I’m not just going to skate by and flail my stick, you know, half half-heartedly. you actually see him going and engaging defensively and, you know, stopping on pucks and not just, you know, floating by and and hoping that, you know, oh, I might I might be sprung for a chance here. But if you’re not, then you’re out of position and, you know, you’re you’re you’re leaving your teammates out to dry and leaving a guy uncovered. Whereas now, I think Badar is is is sticking within the structure. The team is sticking within the structure. Um, and it’s they’re getting rewarded. I mean, early on in the game, there were a number of times where they weren’t cheating for offense, and yet they got three breakaway chances, you know, like it’s it it it just I I I keep coming back to, you know, this game being like the film proof of like this is the way that they can play and this is the way that they can be in games night after night. I I I really hope Friday is not the antithesis of this game. Yeah. Hey, man, they’ve got to be good. Take this film, feel good, and and not only learn from it, burn it into your brain. Make this game your DNA. Yes, that’s it. Uh, just a quick update on the Blackhawks scoring leaders. Uh, Frank Nazar and Connor Bard both tied with two goals and four assists for six points in five games. The allimportant plus minus. Connor Baddard’s a plus one. Frank Nazar is a plus three. Terrain also with six points, a goal and five assists. McKaya Verusi with four. Riel with three today, Burovski with three and so on. So the point per game challenge for uh Nazar and Bard is they’ve got a one more point than game played for both those guys. So we’ll see how that goes over 82, but I think these multi-point games are coming for what was the uh I saw you found a stat about uh multi-point game as Badard with a teenager. Connor Baddard’s uh three assists tonight makes him tied for fifth with Bobby Hall in Blackhawks history for multi-point games uh by a player before they turned 21. He has 29 multi-point games now, surpassing Jonathan Taes. Uh and Stan Makita has the all-time record of 44. So, not out of the realm of possibility for Bard to surpass that if he has um 16 more multi-point games this year. I don’t think that’s impossible. I I would love it. That’d be great. That would be great. Hey, uh also speaking of stats and numbers, uh five points in the standings right now for the Blackhawks through five games. If the season ended today, Blackhawks are the number one wild card in the Western Conference, just as we all predicted. Hell yeah. Taking on the Vegas Golden Knights in the first round. Let’s go. They always say by Canadian Thanksgiving, you know who’s in the playoffs and who’s not, right? That’s the right Thanksgiving they talk about, I think. So, yes. Yeah. So, five games into the season, we’re already declaring Hawks are in the playoffs, baby. Let’s go. We’re back. Turn that Turn Noodle guy back on. Turn him back on. All right. We got to reveal our game puck winner for the for the game. This is our first playoff post game. The winner of the game puck. He’s coming after you. He’s physical. He’s in your face. It’s Noodle Man. Um the winner is Lucas Reichel. Two goals, one assists, three points, five shots. Really great game for Lucas. Uh so congrats to him. He wins our game puck. I got to update my score sheet. I was going to say about 67% of the chat voted for Riel, 26% voted for Bedard, and 7% voted for Nazar. Who voted for Riel? How much percentage? Oh, no. No. Six, seven. Whatever. I hate it here. Yeah. Uh, Mario’s the cool hip. We do have um I think these are postgame quot. I don’t know if these are from the team. We literally just got it. You just got it. Do we want to do some overtime? Do we want to do overtime, Sarah? Go home. Who’s the uh No. Who’s in the video? We got Blash, we’ve got Riel, and we’ve got uh Nazar. Kill about two minutes and then we can go into overtime. Okay, let’s go to overtime. Can we get uh the players? Can we get Nazar and Riel? Yeah, I think that’s all right. Yeah, let’s do it. Let’s do that. In the meantime, want to give everybody a heads up. Tomorrow, the Blackhawks are debuting their first in a series of videos tied to the Centennial. Uh, we got to preview that video today. It’s very cool. Not going to spoil it for you, but very cool, very well produced. Uh, and it’s called the originals. And I will I’ll give this a little spoiler. What I thought this was going to be was going to be here are the early days of the Blackhawks and the history. What it is actually about is all of the things that the Blackhawks organization has innovated in their history. From the goal horn to the curved stick to the goalie mask to butterfly style goalending to the hattick. All these things are creations of the Blackhawks. And you’ll learn about all of them on this video that comes out tomorrow at noon on the Hawks YouTube page. So, make sure you check that out. It’s really cool. It’s definitely worth your time. Um, it’s super well produced. I I And there’s going to be a series of these throughout the years, but the first one called the originals drops tomorrow. Uh, very very well done. There’s interviews with Foley, Harvey Wittenberg, uh, Duncan Keith is in there. Um, there’s a bunch of other people in there. It’s really, really good. The, uh, the Chicago regulars when it comes to sports sports fans. Yes. the the the names whether you want them or not. Yeah. The names of faces that that you you know and you see uh around town a lot. Uh they’re in there. But I mean it’s again it’s it’s a really cool um production. Uh I’m I’m blanking on his full name. Is it Sherman Dilla? That’s the Chicago historian. He’s the uh host and narrator. Um, it’s very well done. So, yeah, awesome. It’s it’s I I learned something today. Yeah, there was a that was my first thought was like I’ve been cover I’ve been following this team for the better part of my 47 years and a lot of the stuff I did not know about. Yeah. Um, and that’s what we wanted with the Centennial was teach fans about the history of the team. This video did a great job of doing it. So, and Paul says like it’s not the home opener video. This is a whole like produced narrated 25 minutes 25 minutes and it’s a it’s going to be like a series of right them. So yeah, it’s the first of of some and it’s different than every shift. I know some people are asking about that. Um I think that’s continuing. I would imagine it’s continuing. Yeah. So this one comes out tomorrow at noon. Episode two, the mad house comes out in late November. The banner year is in early January. And then the next original following the following the Centennial um timeline as well. Yes. This season. All right. We got um we got our uh postgame videos ready to go. All right. We’re waiting on Lucas Reich. While we wait for Lucas Reichel to export. He is Holl’s favorite export. Um do us a favor. Here he is, courtesy of the Chicago Blackhawks. Might having played only six minutes this year, did you feel like you had something to prove? Yeah, I think uh every game you want to prove something and just like how the game went from the start like just pucks went through my way or even from the whole team. I think um yeah, we were shooting the puck a lot and kind of went in and yeah, I think overall it was a good game and it feels good to have two games in a row. It it seemed like that was probably the team’s best performance in years. It’s the biggest row margin of victory since 2019. Um, how did you how would you I guess what what compelled this to come out? Like how do you feel like the team got this? Yeah, I think uh like I said, we we’re shooting puck a lot. Sometimes it goes in, sometimes those shots never go in. So, um I mean we take it and I feel like we played overall a good game. Of course, uh they’re good offensively, especially in their Ozone. So, uh, there are a couple things we can fix, but I mean, uh, we’re happy with the win, of course. Did you see a hole there in that first goal or you just throwing at the net? No, I just threw it on. I didn’t, uh, kind of want like, uh, I didn’t had anything, so I kind of went like a rebound or face off. So, yeah. How did you feel about the rest of your game? Good. Uh, good. I think, uh, I was just playing free, you know, in my head. I was just try to play free and have fun and um that’s what I did today. All right, there he is. Lucas Reichel. Very very just like, oh yeah, play free and have fun. That’s it. Put that on a t-shirt. That’s f Well, we got a lot of ideas. Could do that. Yeah, I’m I’m I’m happy uh like we said with when we were talking about Reichel, happy that he had a game like this because, you know, this this season is early uh so far, but there’s been some there’s been some tough tough stretches for him where, you know, he’s playing well in the preseason and then he doesn’t play, you know, he plays well in the first game and then doesn’t see the ice until like it was like the fourth game again. um you know he’s he’s in a roster battle and he’s getting scra he makes the team but he’s getting scratched and like now they’re only playing endless train rumors all summer. Yeah. And then you know then I get yelled at cuz I ask him about trade rumors and like you know like it’s I’m I’m happy for him to have this kind of game. Um I mean we don’t know what the uh availability will be of Nick Felino in the near future. If you missed it, I know some people were asking in the chat. Yeah. Uh Nick is taking a uh leave of absence to be with his family uh as his daughter is dealing with um uh surgery for a heart uh condition that that she has. So uh he’s away from the team for now. Um but that allowed Riel to get in and he took took advantage of the opportunity. But I think, you know, you have a game like this, I I think you feel like you can keep Lucas Reichel in the lineup and and give him the opportunity to to to build upon it. Um, so that’s good. He he he needed an opportunity like that and took advantage of it. So, I’m happy for him. Yeah, it’s uh I think we and I’m when I say we, I am including myself. um sometimes forget these guys are human and just say, you know, you’re it’s an asset or it’s not an asset or there’s a spot for him and or there’s not a spot for him and you kind of want to you lose you lose the fact that these things affect him, especially these young guys. It feels like Lucas Reichel has been here forever. He’s 23. Yeah. Like it he’s still a kid, you know. So, I’m just happy that he got this game under his belt. It’s going to totally help his confidence and I hope he carries it over against Vancouver. Here’s a kid who has never lacked confidence. Here is Frank Nazar postgame courtesy of the Chicago Blackhawks. A lot of fun. Obviously felt really sweet to go out there and and put up a good number against a team like that. Um obviously playoffs playoff contending team and be able to go out there and and play so well. It’s was really good. Uh your goal there, walk us through that sequence. Yeah, it’s pretty weird. Um just good faceoff win and then good play up the wall and Bert made a unreal play with his feet, get it to the middle. And I had a few other chances earlier in the game where I kind of backed off instead of, you know, taking the pucks to the net and driving to the post. And that time I was like, you know what, I’m just going to just going to take it to the bank and and get it get it there and was able to slip it under a stick and and put it in. And then to get jumped afterwards. Yeah, I was just more excited that that I scored. You know, I was second of the season. Always feels good to score. I want to get a nice little celebration after. You seem like a guy who’d take a little pleasure in being a villain in a road city like this. Honestly, I just be myself. You know, if that’s what they they view me as, then that’s fine. But, um, you know, I’m just out there to play hockey. Go ahead. Sorry. How special was it to have a statement game like this playing without Nick your captain tonight? Honestly, it was huge. Yeah, we we talked a lot about it before the game. Um, you know, we’re obviously praying for him and his family and everything that’s going on and uh that one was was for him and and them and really, you know, it’s it’s obviously something that us as a group talked about before and after the game and and we wanted to go out there and, you know, and play for them. Was the Winter Classic on anyone’s minds heading into this or Yeah, 100%. I was just saying that. I mean, guess obviously the Blues are so close. um always a a battle playing them and um you know we’re we’re going to remember that that game and not forget it and uh think about every time we play. What do you feel like worked well for the team overall? Honestly, I think we’re just connected really well. Um obviously, you know, shutting down their momentum with with goals and and scoring once they build a little bit of momentum and uh shutting that down right away and um you know, Sod just being stable and and having a great game for Ryan to get his first goal in the NHL, it seems like he’s been really consistent through his first five games. What have you seen? Yeah, super happy for him obviously. Um deserves it. working really hard, making great plays, and um you know, you see a smile on his face when he scored. And uh that’s just how much it means. And uh like I mean, obviously being there, it’s like such a just great feeling and and unbelievable moment that you won’t ever forget. Well, hey, you made you made the point about remembering the Winter Classic and what the Blues did to the Hawks on that stage on national TV. Hawks didn’t forget it. They obviously experienced it on the ice and and they’re they’re uh taking that into games against the Blues, which going into tonight, in the last 20 meetings, the Blues were 162 and two against the Hawks. That’s rough. They swept them last year. That’s real bad. So, this win tonight is it feels even extra extra good um to have it be against a team that has had your number over the last four or five seasons. Cannot wait for Friday. Cannot wait. Yeah, you get a performance like this and and you get excited for what’s what’s coming. You you you roll that over. Roll the momentum over. You got two wins now in consecutive games. I hear three is a winning streak. That’s what I heard. That’s what Lou Brown told me. A major league. Keep it going. Yes, 100%. All right. Uh back Friday, postgame Hawks and Canucks at a normal time. That’ll be nice. That’ll be fun. That’ll be a good time. Let’s hope the Hawks beat the crap out of the Canucks who have two points and eight goals on the season. Hey, it’s a opposite end of the spectrum from the playoffbound Blackhawks. But Conor Bard just cannot wait to get there. Yeah. Yeah. Cannot wait to jump on the wagon that is the Vancouver Conucks. Yeah. Everybody wants to go to Vancouver and all the Hughes brothers, by the way. They’re all going to go to Vancouver. They’re all going. Yes. Quinn just can’t wait for all his brothers to come join him there. I like how the Conucks GM is like, “Well, we’re going to lose Quinn Hughes at a Devils, so we might as well just do it.” What? What are you talking about, bro? That’s a different show. Finally tuned. That’s the VNCR Conucks podcast. V Yeah, I guess. VNCR. VNC VN V CV. VN C VCR. V. Yeah, VCR. Yeah. Feel like Elliot Freeman at this point. He’ll get one that makes no sense at all. All right, everyone. We will talk to you Friday postgame. We are off tomorrow cuz we’re working Friday and Saturday. We’ll talk to you then after Hawks. Yes. Off day for the Hawks tomorrow as well. So take it easy. Enjoy your Thursday. We’ll talk to you Friday night after Hawks and Knucks on the CHGO Blackhawks podcast. [Music] [Applause] [Music]

  1. Wow, the Blackhawks are in the middle of the division standings! That just hasn’t happened, even in the beginning of the last several seasons. This team has spent the last 4-5 seasons on the bottom of the standings from the first puck drop. And they should only improve with time

  2. Bizz was 100% right with what he saw last year! Seth Jones was expected to be a leader last year, he wasn’t. Connor needed to grow up and I believe the laidback personality of Frank Nazar has helped Connor grow up and not take himself so seriously. The Hawks need an ass kicking scoring power forward and a nasty veteran D-man.

  3. I for one am done being fooled by one good Lukas Reichel game after he sits out a couple. This isn't the first time he's played well after sitting and it usually fades pretty quick. Hopefully he strings a couple good games together and bumps his trade value up a little but he's fools gold at this point.

  4. The roster has shown glimpses of this over the last few seasons. They've won two games. This means nothing. If they can be more consistent and perform like tonight on a regular basis, then, and only then should our "pessimistic " views be changed. Still, the Hawks haven't achieved anything. Hope!! HOPE!! as fans, this changes soon. It's unacceptable to turn into the Buffalo Sabres

  5. I was at the game. Someone I was impressed with was arty. He was pretty physical and looked confident out there. Same with the Reichel he really looked confident, and I was happy to see it.

  6. I’m stoked on the win and getting 8, as tough as it’s been to score in the other games this game provided quite a few gifts.. credit the Hawks on capitalizing and getting the puck to the net, but this was really a sub-par showing for the Blues netminders and it shaped the game quite a bit.. but yes stoked on a win in St Louis, seems we always found a way to lose there these past few yeara

  7. Tonight was a blast to see, especially against the Blues. To see us in the standings at number 13 tonight, I’m loving the vibes. But before we start circle jerking around, we need some consistency from this team. I’m just asking to at least become a wild card team come end of season. We can do it. Hope this is the year it ramps up. 🚨

  8. It's crazy how this team is so young and can even get younger at the end with hopefully Frondell, Moore, Boisevert, Kantserov, etc coming up and looking good
