Morgan Barron has quietly been a solid depth piece over the past couple seasons, mostly playing a bottom-six role with the Jets. He’s been used primarily as a 4C or winger, averaging around 11-12 minutes a night, and has seen time on the PK. But with his size, decent two-way instincts, and flashes of offensive upside, should the Jets be looking at expanding his role?

  1. I think Arnie is pretty dead set on having a dangerous 4th line that can be a scoring threat. I would bet a bigger role for Barron means more minutes for the entire 4th line, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it shakes out in a way that sees him elevated — he may well get that opportunity at some point.

  2. I’ve been saying it since he sliced up his face a few years ago in the playoffs. He’s a lot better than a 4th liner. I think, given the right wingers, he could be an effective 2nd line center. I think he could be an effective 2nd line winger, especially for a guy like Toews at center. I would love to see him get a 10 game stretch. I promise you, it won’t look bad.

  3. Yes but not sure how. He has been a revelation at center. I would flip him and Vlad right now. But given how his improved play late last year and in the playoffs seemed to be tied to him playing center, would he be as good on the wing in the top 9 when Lowry comes back?

  4. Bring up some of the young guys like Lambert and have them play with Barron. We’ve never really rolled out 4 skilled lines and I’d love to see what it would look like.

  5. Don’t underestimate the role of a 4th line center. Critical to have his talent and tenacity in this position.

  6. Watch him really step up last playoffs and loved every second of it. Think he possibly puts up 20 or close to it this season.

  7. A promotion to 3C at least (for now). Barron’s metrics outshine Namestnikov’s at 5on5 in pretty much every category despite starting his shifts on worse ice position.

Winnipeg is never breaking up Scheifele/Connor and Toews has been very solid at 2C. I don’t really any chance for Barron to break into the top 6 – I’m hoping he sticks with Lowry or maybe gets some looks as a winger higher up once the roster starts to return to normal.
