Coach Mike Tomlin Postgame Press Conference (Week 7 at Cincinnati Bengals) | Pittsburgh Steelers

you know, a tough heart for game. Um, but certainly got to give credit to those guys, the Bengals. Uh, they did what was required to win. They made a few more plays than we did. Um, just from a analysis perspective, I just thought, um, you know, the first half, uh, we allowed them to run the ball too much. Um, I think they had about 100 yards rushing at the half and then we turned the ball over a couple times and so that just kind of set a negative trajectory and we’re fighting uphill the rest of the way. I certainly appreciate the fight. Um, but man, we got to be cleaner. We got to be better. And we weren’t tonight. And that’s that’s life in this business. Uh, we certainly got to learn from it, man, and keep pushing. Uh, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t compliment them, man. They fought their tails off, man. They won the game and they’re certainly deserving. Uh, no real injuries to speak of. Um, had some bumps and bruises associated with play. Uh, next time we get together, I’ll provide some details in that area if necessary. anyone Michael uh as the game went over you thinking about double teaming Chase more. What’s your thought? We we you know we played these guys a bunch. Um we double teamamed them some. We double team five some. It’s a mix. A mix is required. Um they got depth and talent. Um just like the one play 80 made down the middle. We were doubling them both and they were one-on-one in that circumstance. And so, you know, there’s many ways you can analyze it. Uh but the bottom line is they made more plays than we did. Mike, defensively against the run, what was the issue, especially there in the second? They popped a couple. Um they did, man, we didn’t do a good enough job of gap control. Um and they popped a couple big ones and and it kind of created an unsteady environment. Especially disappointing with the secondary considering, you know, sort of the focus this offseason was getting these guys to play these Bengals. Yeah, we won’t be defined by this performance, but it certainly was disappointing tonight. Mike, do you feel at all in the second that maybe you got away from the run with the success you were having in the first? I don’t. I don’t. You know, we turned the ball over a couple of times. It’s 60 minutes of football. We ran it well in the second half. Um, any pocket of the game you can isolate and, you know, have judgment, so we don’t worry about that. I thought we ran the ball effectively largely over the course of the game. Was that a flee flicker called in the first half? It was. I think you said earlier in the season after game you had a bunch of turnovers be able to turn over everybody. Is this a game where a couple turnovers could mask some of what you were giving up on defense? You know, when we’re not getting it, we better secure it. I think it’s the totality of it. Um we work as a collective. Um and so if we’re not getting it, we certainly better protect it. And so we didn’t do a good enough job of getting it tonight. We didn’t do enough good enough job of protecting it. When you’re minus two on the road, you don’t win a lot of those games. Did they do anything special to visualize your pass rush tonight? Now, they got rid of the ball quick and they were running the ball effectively and so it minimized some of those one-dimensional passing circumstances.

  1. Stop putting your damn ILB's up on the line (on running downs). If a RB gets pass the line, it's open field. Need to level the D. But I guess they do that because they don't draft run thumpers inside, like Farrior, Kirkland, Timmons, Foote & Earl Holmes anymore 😠

  2. “They got the ball out quick, eliminating those one dimensional pass situations” THEN RUN PRESS-MAN TOMLIN. I have always defended Tomlin but it’s been getting hard to for years. YOU ADJUST TO YOUR OPPONENTS.

  3. Joey Porter is NOT weakest link in the secondary- can’t tackle, should have had 10 PI’s- fakes injured after being cooked every game- dude is a backup at best on the Titans

  4. Playing down to competition again, I see. A team with no defense down their best player managed 2 takeaways while your vaunted defense only had 2 sacks and 0 takeaways against a 40 year old statue. He should've been blitzed the whole night, but no, let's run my baby shit zone defense.

  5. How many times are we gonna let this man say his “tomlinisms” and walk away free as ever .. it’s time to get him and teryl Austin out of here since like 2 years ago

  6. Offense (particularly the running game ) looked great , Rodgers getting more and more comfortable moving outside the pocket after the Achilles year 2, unfortunately the defense took a BIG step back

  7. The Steelers will be fine…the Bengals needed this more! We will beat them at our house!!! Good to see A-Rod slinging it….I was feeling too good today and it wasn't a good sign…..0-7 on Thursday night on the road in the Division this is a problem along with Playoff wins!!!
