I'm back after the first one I saw this season!

Devils vs Panthers. Panthers score later in the 3rd to make it 3-2, but the goal is waived off on the ice. Florida challenges it, loses the challenge, and the game basically ends because they're now on the PK. 3-1 Devils.

As a Devils fan myself, there is NO WAY that should have been called back AND the fact that the challenge didn't reverse it is TERRIBLE. There is just no way you can convincw me that what happened here is goalie interference… Terrible call and an absolutely joke of a review.

  1. As a devils fan that should have counted, man I would have been pissed if my team was on the other end of that

  2. Goaltender Interference Rules
    1) You can’t just be up there and just doin’ an interference like that.
    1a. Interference is when you
1b. Okay well listen. An interference is when you interfere the
    1c. Let me start over
1c-a. The skater is not allowed to do a block to the, uh, goalie, that prohibits the goalie from doing, you know, just trying to save the puck. You can’t do that.
1c-b. Once the skater is in the offensive zone, he can’t be over here and say to the goalie, like, “I’m gonna get ya! I’m gonna block your view! You better watch your butt!” and then just be like he didn’t even do that.
1c-b(1). Like, if you’re about to make a goal and then don’t leave the crease, you have to still leave the crease. You cannot not avoid the goaltender. Does that make any sense?
1c-b(2). You gotta be, skating motion out of the crease, and then, until you just leave it.
1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have your stick up here, like this, but then there’s the interference you gotta think about.
1c-b(2)-b. Fairuza Interference hasn’t been in any movies in forever. I hope she wasn’t typecast as that racist lady in American History X.
1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, she was in The Waterboy too! That would be even worse.
1c-b(2)-b(ii). “get in mah bellah” — Adam Water, “The Waterboy.” Haha, classic…
1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. An interference is when the skater makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the goalie and the crease…
    2) Do not do an interference please.

  3. Basically, it doesn’t matter if the other player is in the crease or not, if you make contact with the goalie while the goalie is in the crease it’s gonna be a penalty.

I think the refs are being pretty clear on it this year so teams need to start taking note.

  4. Absolutely interference. His skates may be outside of the crease, but his body extends into it and makes contact with the goalie. (Look at :07. His body is clearly over.)

  5. Goalie in crease, player makes unnecessary contact, stick caught up in Reinhart’s equipment and pulled his blocker away from the puck, not allowing the goalie the ability to make the save.

  6. Looks like there’s a chance his right foot was in the blue paint, and he definitely made a bit of contact. With his reputation I can see why the call was made, but again it is hard to tell

  7. Goalie was in his crease. There was incidental contact with the Florida Player that resulted in the goalies ability to make the save being impaired. Therefore the goal can be disallowed. the key in this play is where the goalie is. Since the goalie is in his crease ANY incidental contact with the goalie just prior to goal being scored results in a disallowed goal.

NHL Rulebook: TABLE 14 (Rule 69 – Interference on the Goalkeeper) INTERFERENCE ON THE GOALKEEPER SITUATIONS Situation Result 1. THE GOALKEEPER IS IN THE GOAL CREASE.

    C. An attacking player makes incidental contact with the goalkeeper at the same time a goal is scored. Goal is disallowed. The official in his judgment may call a minor penalty on the attacking player. The announcement should be, “No goal due to interference with the goalkeeper.”

  8. Obviously biased, but I don’t think that’s interference. Not mad about it though, because a) these calls happen to everyone all season/league is a mess regarding this rule AND b) we were heavily outplayed the entire game. Should have been 8-1 Devils but not for Tarasov doing a May Bobrovsky impression.

  9. In the blue and made contact on the goalie. Interference in my opinion. If he would’ve pushed sideways instead of back in any way then I would say no interference

  10. I didn’t think it was interference when watching last night. However, now that I watch this angle, I can see why the refs made the decision. Goalie is at the top of the crease, but still in the blue. FLA player initiates contact (minor contact, but contact nonethless). Immediately after the goal is scored.

I still don’t agree too much, but I can at least understand why they upheld the call.

  11. Allen was in the paint. Lundell touched him while in the paint. Goalie interference. End of story. Bring in the dancing lobsters

  12. Goalies in the paint, player touches him.  Thats the rule, if they called it like this all the time players would stop trying to make “incidental” contact and we’d have fewer of these debates.

  13. From the top down view, I don’t think it can be definitively proven one way or the other if the attacking player was in the blue at the time of contact. The lines are rather obscured by the bodies, to me it looks like it might just be in the red paint, his ass or a heel might be as far as the blue, but it doesn’t matter, it has to be 100% conclusive to overturn the call. The initial call should stand after the challenge. But if any part of the attacking player is in the blue paint, regardless of skate position, when contact is made with the goaltender, it’s probably coming back.

  14. As a youth, I enjoyed watching Belfour play dirty with guys that would screen him. As I matured, I realized that he was playing dirty and a jerk, but part of me still appreciates a way to make players think twice about posting up in front of you.

  15. If anything it’s interference on the goalie 😂 I guess at this point you just hope that the calls over the course of the season balance out. Sometimes you get screwed over and other times it’s the opponent.

  16. I was at the game and truly believe this was a makeup call for a horrendous call against Luke Hughes where they said that he held a Panthers players stick…..but he was actually tripped between the legs and the stick got stuck. That call would have put NJD on a 5-3 PP. This call made up for that.

  17. It’s so easy to understand what the rule is.

Goalie is in his crease, player initiates contact.

This isn’t hard to understand. If the goalie is in his crease you can’t touch him. That’s GI by the letter of the law.

    End of story.

  18. Eh that is borderline, but technically he did both impair the goalies ability to move freely and defend his goal AND initiate contact

Given the Panthers get away with outright murder on a daily basis its entirely possible this is just a case of a ref deciding a coin flip in favour of the Devils to “even the scales”

  19. Doesn’t look it to me: he was outside the crease, and moving laterally and not into the goalie. If Allen can’t stay inside the lines, then he’s blocking his own chance of doing his job.

  20. I wondered what the reaction would be the first time the kitties had to follow the rules.

The comments in this thread from their “fans” checks out. They never learned the rules cause they have never seen them followed.

  21. As a goalie all i can say is fuck you guys lmao. The rules when i was playing was dont fuckin touch me, even if im out of my crease a bit. Refs were leaning towards goalies ALWAYS.

  22. It was a weak call but considering Florida got 2 power players on some of the worst penalties I’ve ever seen called, I’d say it was a bad officiating wash.

Seriously how the hell are you going to call Bratt for holding when a player shoves their stick in between his legs while he is taking a shot and pulls him down.

  23. 1. Goaltender is in the crease

    2. FLA player touches the goaltender

    3. If you made a projection of the crease in an upwards direction you can see that the contact was made within this projection.

    Goaltender interference.

  24. The goaltender inside the blue paint is protected, cannot be touched. The goalie here is in the blue paint and was interfered with, it’s a pretty easy call.
