What Went Wrong in Week 6, Expectations for London | Jags A.M.
[Music] Stevens here with Brian Sexton and John Oer as we go over Sunday’s Big game against the Seahawks. Jaguars couldn’t quite pull it out. A tough day all around. Let’s go over our big things for you today brought to you by GEA, Government Employees Health Association. Big thing number one is it was a big play day. Explosives we saw from the Seahawks and also a ton from the Seahawks pass rush. Liam Cohen talked a little bit about what the other team did well. It just felt weird. They hit enough explosives and we didn’t. Like that’s the reality is we didn’t get after their quarterback. They got after ours. They hit a couple big plays in the pass game and we did not. So, u I don’t think either team probably ran it as well as we’ve been, you know, running the football. We did come out with a mindset of us wanting to throw the ball, but we’ve got to get after their quarterback more uh as they got after ours. Brian, we’ve been talking for a couple of weeks hoping to see the explosives for the Jaguars offense. We saw it with the Seahawks offense yesterday. Yeah. Listen, I I I thought from the Jaguars offensive perspective, they would be able to grab those explosive. Devin Witherspoon, their all pro corner, didn’t play. Julian Love, one of the better safeties in the NFC, didn’t play. They were down in total three starters in the secondary, and you felt like the Jaguars offensive line, which had allowed only seven sacks all season. Would hold up well enough for Trevor Lawrence to be able to make some plays down the field. Um, they didn’t. And obviously, the Jaguars didn’t get open down the field nearly enough to help their quarterback. It was a um it was a frustrating day because some of the things that you thought you knew about this team didn’t come to to pass. Yeah, frustrating is the right word. I mean, the Jaguars knew they were going to have to throw. They wanted to throw and they didn’t have time to throw. And then when they did have time to throw, uh there weren’t guys open or there a couple misses. So, look, this game is not a tragedy, but u it does show some things that have to be addressed moving forward. It was a bad matchup for him in retrospect. Uh they still almost had a chance at the end, but uh yeah, it was it was a frustrating day. Well, not to move too far ahead, but I mean, John, you have to get these matchups fixed because the Rams are, I think, better than this team. They’re better pass rushers. They’re going to create more problems for your quarterback. I I That’s the part going to London makes a lot of sense this week. You got to spend some time focused and tighten it down. Some other self-inflicted wounds we saw yesterday are big thing number two, penalty problem. We’ve been seeing penalties been an issue recurring different weeks and it definitely was. Yesterday, Trevor Lawrence talked a little bit about ownership and each individual player taking ownership of their mistakes. Everyone taking ownership of of their part of it. Look at today and and say, “All right, what if what can I do to improve this? How can I help, you know, the guy next to me or yourself or whatever?” I think it’s more just focusing on what you can do as an individual. And I think that’s where some of the things might be more of just like a lapse in focus at a certain time that are little penalties like the offsides or whatever it is. It’s just, you know, that consistent focus throughout the game to where these things don’t show up. John, once again, we’re in double digit penalties for this team. At first, we thought maybe getting used to the offense now, but still having some of the same issues. Yeah, they talked afterward about the penalties taking away big plays and that didn’t hurt them I think quite as much as they thought in the aftermath. It took away the Brian Thomas Jr. touchdown, but they got a touchdown on that drive. Um but I thought in looking back at it where it really hurt Brian was um it seemed like every drive you were second and 13 and and second and 15 and every penalty created at least a 10 yard situation against a pass rush and a and when you weren’t running the ball anyway it just felt like those penalties made it so every time you dropped back the Seahawks were in third and go get them. You played right into their hands. Uh it seems as if the penalties were really poorly timed. And again, I’m not talking about the Bryant Thomas, Travis Hunter. How about Hunter Long’s holding penalty on a first down. I mean, there were just there were enough of them that made you say, “Are you are you going to get this thing tightened down today?” What were there 12 flags thrown against the Jaguars? 10 of them were accepted. U How about you get a good return out to the 33 yard line and then Rayon Lane gets hit with a personal foul. Uh and and you go back to the 18. I mean, just they just never were able to help themselves. I think that’s the message that I left the stadium with is this team couldn’t help itself. It just kept hurting itself all day. Final big thing today going to be 6-7. We talked a little bit about the O line problems, but how about this? Heading into the game, Trevor Lawrence had been sacked six times and he got sacked seven times in the singular game against the Seahawks. Brian, do we have an offensive line problem? Obviously, center Robert Hayes was injured. He was not in. Jonah Manheim was in, but we’ve seen changes elsewhere on the line. Is it just that or are the Seahawks that good? Well, listen, I think Seattle’s very good, but Demarcus Lawrence is 33 years old and he had two and a half sacks, his first two and a half of the year. That’s a Jaguars problem. Not having Hany probably kept some things from being settled before the snap of the ball. A good center gets everyone lined up and sees everything in front of him. And not having Brettton Strange, who’s a big part of what they do up front also. Those two things hurt them without a doubt. Uh, but the Jaguars should be better than that. It’s We just talked about how they were behind the chains a lot and that played right into the Seattle Seahawks hands. Buckle up because Jared Verse and Bryce Young are going to be coming off the end this week. Brian Young rather in um in London and it’s not going to get any easier. They better figure some things out this week. Yeah, the hope is that in London you can run a little better and offset some of that. But, uh, look, I don’t want to overreact cuz there’s always a tendency after a game to to forget that it’s one of 17 and they have been a good offensive line that what happened yesterday doesn’t negate any of that, but you also do not want to ignore and think, oh, we’re going to be fine. It wasn’t just seven sacks. It was seeming somebody counted 25 pressures that that didn’t feel off. I mean, uh, 17 quarterback hits. Yeah. So, it’s uh again, they’ve played too well coming in to say that there has to be major wholesale changes, but uh you this can’t be what this team is or else obviously they’re not going anywhere. Definitely some stuff to look at. Stay with us here on Jags AM. Coming up after the break, we’ll look at the tape from yesterday’s game. [Music] Frank Frani here. See firehousubs.com for offer terms. we come out, we don’t really do much offensively early on. We score and miss an extra point. So, it was like those deflating moments. I think that’s probably the the the theme of today was positive, then something negative would occur and kind of take the wind out of our sales. Um, you know, I thought it was a very honest locker room in there in terms of understanding guys that we will not beat good quality teams like this, whether you’re home, on the road, in London, on the West Coast, doesn’t matter, if we continue to hurt ourselves and and have these self-inflicted wounds that ultimately is on me. Always trust Liam Cohen to be honest and give you an honest review of what he thinks about the situation. I just he’s terrific and I hope that people can understand to have a coach like that who is so transparent with you. They don’t he plays no games at the podium which is different from a lot of football coaches. I really like him. Yeah. And beyond that part of it, he also very honestly assesses and u doesn’t let the team sort of make excuse. I mean he sees the game for what it is. And I’ve been around coaches who sort of see the game through different lenses. Uh he seems to see it through a very honest lens and it gives you a chance to I think for the team and the coaches to know what’s going on and fix it more realistically than if you’re not seeing it through that lens. You know the other thing Kai is if people have not seen his postgame locker room, he’s so calm and composed. He doesn’t let the emotion overwhelm him in the locker room and he doesn’t let the emotion speak in front of the media. Um he he’s the right guy to lead this team through this difficult week. Yes. And sometimes that’s hard to do right after a game. I think we all can admit we get a little emotional at times. So good to see that from your head coach. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights. Uh things were a little frustrating early. A lot of uh not a lot of offense on either side to get things going. But we did see BTJ get involved a little bit earlier in this game which was nice to see and also Travis Hunter get involved in the passing game. So let’s take a look at this. It’s um because we’ve been talking for weeks obviously wanting to get Brian Thompson Jr. involved. He had um I think eight catches for 90 yards on the day. And obviously this was a decent drive where they set some things up. We love to see Travis Hunter juking out defenders. That’s always it’s always enjoyable. And then Brent Thompson Jr. getting his first receiving touchdown of the season. He got that um run play touchdown earlier on in the year, but finally feels like he’s getting going a little bit. Listen, you have to keep going back to him. And I I know people are looking at the numbers with Travis Hunter today and saying, “How do you get the ball to him more?” The Jaguars passing attack, John, feels like it will go through these two guys. And if the quarterback is going to have a really good season, he’s going to have to have a really good relationship with 12 and seven. Yeah, I I thought Brian Thomas Jr. in the last couple weeks has taken some real steps to getting back to where he was. I thought there were a couple yesterday that he would probably like to have back as well, but the steps are going in the right direction. And uh look, the the challenge in this is getting Travis Hunter the ball in situations where he can do what he did. What he did on that one play was spectacular. Um, you need that four or five times to have it feel like a functioning part of the offense rather than an outlier. Right now, Travis’s still feel like outliers. And I think the coaching staff would love to get that more. Okay, we’ve got four or five foundation pieces that we do well. I think you need to get him in a situation where he’s more of a foundation piece. Let’s take a look at um Jackson Smith and Jigba’s touchdown because I was very unwarm welcome. I think I wrote for you, John, um to the new quarterback, Greg Newsome Jr. Um I think his first play into the game at this point. And I don’t know what the defense was doing. I don’t know if he thought he had some safety help. I don’t know if there’s a miscommunication. Obviously, he went to about one and a half practices. So, I’m going to assume maybe he didn’t know where he needed to be on what, but um this is one of the explosives we talked about them connecting on and and one play, one touchdown that hurts you. It’s sometimes in this league it’s about who has the best players and the Seahawks had the best wide receiver in the game yesterday and no apology I mean not a knock on BTJ but this kid right now is one of the best two or three receivers um and he you know I’m going to assume that Greg Newsome Jr. is better than that. Um one play does not a career make. Yeah, but that was in a 2012 game when everything felt difficult, as Liam said, explosives made the difference and it was probably the play of the game. I mean, open it up. Yeah, it looked like he stumbled a bit. He was there and then stumbled. And I I don’t know why. I don’t know. Maybe he was thinking Dewey was supposed to be deeper. To me, it looked like he was that’s generally the safety following him and then kind of looked to see if he had help with the safety and then that’s where the step fumble came in. Uh it’s it’s not surprising that a guy would make a mistake when he was here for a practice and a half as you mentioned. Yeah. Um but something to keep an eye on going forward. Now another thing maybe to keep an eye on going forward. Kim Little missed an extra point yesterday. Misses this field goal and it affects a lot of decisions going down later in the game when you decide to go for two point conversion. Like we talk about special teams but small special teams mistakes can lead to bigger problems for your team. Well, that game early yesterday was very similar to the Texans game where, you know, some games in this in the NFL now are momentum games from Bside in the second half. This was one where every drive mattered. I I thought a huge play early was when they got out of their own goal line early with the Rayon Lane play where he changed field position. It felt like a game where those kind of plays were going to matter. In those kind of games, you give away four points, the difference between trailing by seven and three at halftime. Uh it it was mammoth. And I am a little worried about Cam Little because he’s missed a couple in the last couple of weeks. Um and I think he would tell you 50 yard field goals in this league now. You got to make them. So I I think he’s going to be fine, but he’s got to show he’s fine. They got special teams is an area we haven’t focused on because there’s been enough other issues. But um Logan Cook, you know, he had a beautiful punt, the one that Rayon Lane, you just mentioned, and he had one late in the ball game that pinned the Seahawks at their own seven, but you know, when he’s punting the ball from around the 40 yardd line on his side of of midfield, you expect that pooch punt to go down inside the 10 yardd line. That’s why he’s a Pro Bowl punter, he’s missed several of those in recent weeks. Uh we heard earlier the head coach talk about the ups and the downs and the ups and the downs. Special teams last year was that stable force for this football team. That one thing you could count on. They have not been through the first couple of weeks of the season. You have got to get that part of the game, that phase of the game back to playing consistently because those are good players that you need to make big plays. Yeah, they were big time against Kansas City. I I don’t want to sell them short because they’ve had some moments, Brian, but the missed kid. Yeah, I mean it’s it the specialists have had their moments they’d like back. Let’s take a look at this Cooper Cut Cooper Cup touchdown. He had a big catch to gain um get a first down earlier on in the drive and the defense uh I know there’s some secondary changes, but it it felt a little disjointed at times and maybe that’s cuz they didn’t have a takeaway, but even here Jordan Lewis doesn’t get a his head around which we never see from him. So, it just um I I credit to the Seahawks offense for for setting some good plays up, but that’s tough. Yeah, this is the first drive of the third quarter and it just felt like they came out of the locker room on their heels. Not not what you want to see for sure. Yeah, it uh it was a really really good throw and Cooper Cup is a very precise receiver. Uh Jordan Lewis is a high-end player. I think he got beat by a high-end play here. Um, but again, a game of moments. Uh, and the Seahawks made three or four big plays that the Jaguars couldn’t match. And, uh, you know, in in games like that, that’s what decides them. Um, let’s take a look at the second touchdown drive and Trevor converting on a fourth down earlier in that possession because I was watching this kind of go down and you’re like, “Oh, no.” Well, it kind of felt like one of those I’m going to throw across the field and get intercepted and pick six. But he connected to Hunter Long. So, I give credit where credit is due because I wasn’t quite sure if that was going to work. I tried to tell some people on the radio last night and and then this morning, you know, walking the dog in my neighborhood, he didn’t play as bad as people, what a point, right? He didn’t throw interceptions. He didn’t fumble the ball. And then he makes that throw where he’s rolling to his right. And even that one there where he’s stepping up into the pocket, he’s capable of playing at a higher level. and they’re going to need him, John, to make these kinds of plays on Sunday against the Rams and going forward. These are the kind of plays where the quarterback elevates his team. That’s a big fourth down. I thought there was a little in the postgame criticism of Trevor, I thought there was a little preconception, if you will, of people assuming, oh, he’s playing bad. Uh, you know, I haven’t really had a chance to look and see what was open downfield and some of the hold the ball plays. Sometimes when a quarterback holds the ball, fans get mad at him and if he had thrown the ball, it’s a pick and then they get really mad. So, um I the numbers and the moments uh suggest that he was okay. I think what people are waiting for and we haven’t seen yet is um the lift the team in the passing game moment that we just haven’t seen. And uh I’m waiting. Yeah. Well, that that fourth down throw back across the field, dangerous as it may be, felt like it was the cusp of some of those. When you pay a guy and he is your franchise quarterback, it’s fair to expect him to make those kinds of plays. They’re going to need them. Oh, there’s lots of expectations and they are definitely going to need them. Stay with us. We’ll give you our hot takes here on Jags AM after the break. I mean, we we need turnovers. um we need turnovers to win games and I honestly feel like we could have got a few good turnovers and you know got gave the the the football back to the offense and you know advantageous you know positions but um that didn’t happen but like I said uh guys fought we fought back um it just wasn’t good enough. Jordan Lewis, one of your captains talking about not getting any takeaways for the first game this season against the Seahawks and I’m going to go first today with my hot take because it kind of leads right into that. So mine was I feel a strength was masking up some of the weaknesses on defense. Now by no means do I think this is a weak defense but I think when you get takeaways that can erase a lot of other issues that may be sprouting up at times on defense if they’re allowing big plays but then you get a takeaway doesn’t really matter. Like when the Chiefs are knocking on the door about to score but Devin Lloyd takes it back 99 yards the other way you don’t notice as much about what was allowed on the drive. So I think for the defense just focusing in on that communication especially now on the back end with some new players out there. um in terms of the secondary is important for them this week. Also, we didn’t see Devin Lloyd was on and off the field during that game. We saw his presence was missed out there. So, just increasing that communication, getting better up front as well, getting more pressure against the quarterback. I know Trayvon Walker’s out there with a club, but not let yes, hang your hat on takeaways. That is always excellent to have, but kind of getting down to the fundamentals again, I think is important. Listen, I think you can expand that to include the offense, too. When the defense grabs 14 takeaways in five games, it it overcomes a lot of offensive mistakes and and we certainly saw that the takeaways were a huge factor. You better get some this week because the Rams are an excellent football team. Yeah, I think what bodess well in this conversation is the fact that they stopped the run, so they’re continuing to have that as a strength and you got to have that defensively. Um, but Liam said it after the game, you have to pressure the quarterback on the opposing team. uh usually over 17 games, if you’re not pressuring the quarterback consistently, you’re not going to get a league leading uh level of takeaways. All right, John, let’s get your hot take for us today. Uh you know, time to tighten up. And if you’re sort of obvious, and it’s probably been a theme of the show, but um they sort of been talking about it all year. There was an urgency when Liam talked about it, but the 10 penalties, a couple of key drops, four points left on the field. uh with a kicker. This is a a onecore small points league. Uh and when you give away five, six, seven points, um the other team doesn’t want to give those back. Correct. And they didn’t. So, yeah. Right. So, that’s you got to tighten it up. And it’s been a theme what since March. Yeah. Liam’s he feels like a broken record on that one. And I’m not, you know, I’m sure he feels like a broken record. You can’t beat good teams given away situations. Well, if we go back to the preseason, they had a poor outing on the practice field and and and in a game. And the very next day, he just kept hammering away. They lined up. They practiced lining up. You don’t have a lot of time to do that kind of stuff at this time of the year. Uh but he stood at the podium yesterday, John, and said, “This is on me.” Oh, I got the distinct impression that he’s going to fix it. If it’s on him, he will absolutely have it fixed. Um Brian, what’s your hot take for us? All right, so I’m going not ready for prime time. Obviously, John and and Kai, they won the prime time game against Kansas City, but it the way they came out yesterday felt like there was some hangover. Maybe it was the short week. Maybe they couldn’t handle the prosperity. You know, Liam talks all the time about handling adversity, but this team has struggled at times to handle the prosperity when it comes its way. And look, you you’ve got a prime time game essentially coming up Sunday at Wembley because you’re the only game in that 9:30 a.m. spot. So, follow me here. That was a prime time game yesterday. You had something to prove that you could handle playing on Monday and beating a good team and then beating a good team at home on Sunday and go to London. And they just they weren’t ready for yesterday. And I I watched practice last week. It looked like they had good on practice field, right? It looked I I don’t know how the meeting rooms went, but they weren’t ready when the game started. Uh, you know, the quarterback comes out and makes the same kind of silly mistake. First and 10, and he and he takes a two two- yard sack. Again, it’s not huge, but throw the ball away. Don’t give up two yards cuz two or four or five, they all kind of add up. So, it just they got off to a bad start. It felt like they couldn’t handle the prosperity. You got prime time Sunday against the LA Rams. Better be ready this week. Yeah, there are there are tricky parts of every NFL schedule and yesterday was a tricky part that really really good teams. I said before the game, if if they win this game, I feel like they’re really good because that was a difficult six days after London next. Uh nobody thinks about the Seahawks except for the fact that they always beat people. Um so that felt to me like if they had come out and beat a good veteran team and I felt like okay, they’re a team that can navigate this. They’re not a team that can navigate that yet. If you go and beat the Rams, right, and and that’s a tall order, but if you go beat the Rams, will you will you be able to say they’re a good team? Would you be I think they’re good. I mean, I’m sorry, but would you I think the Rams are a good team. Uh I think the Jaguars are good. There’s a difference between good and a team that can go reel off 12 and get into situations where they’re in good shape for the playoffs. I don’t think they’re a 12- win team. I didn’t ask that the right way. You were talking about how if you come off Kansas City and beat Seattle, you would you’d put them in maybe an upper echelon from where they might sit in your mind today. If you come off the loss to Seattle and you go and beat the Rams in Wembley, does it put them up there or does it just solidify that they’re solidifies 10 team? Okay. I think they’re a 10- win team. And uh so uh but it be it’d be better than losing. Be a nicer flight home for sure. Winning is better than losing, guys. Write that down. We should write that in the studio here somewhere. Very key. Stay with us. We’ll tell you what’s coming up the rest of the week cuz the team’s getting ready to travel to London. [Music] It’s game time, Jaguars fans. That’s what I’m asking and that’s where we got to go take the next step, guys, because that is what’s holding us back, man. We have got by and we’ve won some of these games because of this, right? A lot of we made a lot of great plays, but because we got hard because we play. But in times where we got to go execute and not hurt ourselves, man, that showed up today. That’s just the reality. That’s the reality. Jaguars locker room post a loss to the Seattle Seahawks. We saw them do this after the Bengals game as well. Some really cool access. We always kind of hear from them after the win, but now we’re hearing from them after the losses, too. You know, Akai, 31 years of doing this, I don’t remember. First of all, not every coach would let us come in after a win, let alone a loss. And and John, I mean, cameras are sure they’re everywhere now. So maybe people take for granted to to just see things on video, but that’s remarkable that he would let you in in a very private, frustrating moment to hear what he’s saying to his football team. It it may become commonplace in years to come with younger coaches who are used to it, but for right now, you’re right, guy. It’s incredible access. Yeah. And that being said, I’ll just say yes, you’re right. And I think it it it does show people who are watching this and and the hardcore people watching this that what he’s saying publicly publicly is real. Um, so far they’ve won because of heart and the execution has to get better. It shows some insight into how he coaches. Sort of what we referenced earlier. There’s no BS and no frrills, right? It’s this is what we got to do and here’s our expectation. We all got to go do it. And uh so yeah, it’s impressive. He’s impressive and I feel good about it going forward. Yeah. All right. Here’s the deal. We’re heading to London. As we mentioned, the team’s packing up, going to head out on Monday. We will be back here on Jags AM on Wednesday and Thursday, but we be coming to you from the Grove, the uh resort we stay at in London for the game as the Jaguars get prepared to take on the Rams. So we will see you later this week from London with Jagam. [Music]

We’re 4-2! We should be grateful to have this good of a start. We lost to a good team, which if you have seen some jag fans reactions only means we’re going to lose 12 straight. We were missing our starting center. We need to clean up penalties, protect TLaw, and Trevor just needs to continue to improve. He’s posted a 90 + passer rating the past 3 games. That’s good stuff! We are in a weak division, and the only tough teams left on our schedule is the broncos, rams, colts twice, and potentially that Texans game. The rest is a cakewalk.
4-2 is a better start than anyone thought we’d have before the season started
Trevor made the one good throw across the middle, but missed others at crucial moments. That’s the difference between a good QB1 and an excellent QB1. Games are won and lost in the small margins. Being frustrated by Trevor missing key moment passes to #12 and #7 is legitimate
We gonna need to clean up penalties all damn year, Trevor gonna be inconsistent all damn year, the pass rush gonna be mediocre all damn year, the oline had one missing person and horribly sucked gonna try and find themselves all damn year!!!
we greatly miss strange

You can clearly see in every win that they need to improve, they publicly self-critique because there's no time in a season that a team isn't trying to be better. Years past a team this mistake-ridden got curb stomped. We sit at 4-2 with a team that's still learning a new offense and new defense, under an all-rookie coaching staff. I figured they might lose Sunday because Seattle is good and teams just get outplayed sometimes. But nothing will make a Debbie Downer happy. They will always find SOMETHING to whine about. Some people were just waiting for the next L, so they could complain.
We need to get a few bigger, better linemen. This is not the final product of how the online experience will be; there will be more changes coming. 7 sacks are unacceptable.
Go Jags!
The way John sits on the couch 😂😂😂😂
The long TD pass to JSN was Dewey’s fault.
Look at the routes Darnold was throwing at. His receivers were not afraid to go across the middle.
BTJ is not elite and definitely isn’t a WR1. He has become one dimensional and highly predictable for defenses. It’s either out route or go route. It makes it harder on Trevor when his #1 receiver is limited to the routes he can run. He is absolutely shying away from contact.
Trevor had tried to elevate the passing game. The receivers need to hold onto the damn ball!!
Tbh, Cohen is making the most with the roster he was given. Kudos to him, just want until Gladstone really has time to build a team. Notice theyre making moves to free up cap space
This coach is going to fail. this team will will never make the playoffs ever again. number 16 is going to drag this team down. there is no answer to this mess. Its too hard to be a fan, its just pure misery. So its over, that's it and that's all.
Agreed with Kainani's assessment that turnovers have been masking the fact that after 6 weeks we have the 3rd worst pass Defense by yds/g and total sacks; horrid. If that doesn't improve the season won't end well.
Come on Jags!! Let's go 5-2 going into the bye!! You can do it!!
What I want to know is why our best cover corner isn’t playing defense right now?
TRAVIS IS A CORNERBACK FIRST

This team is 4-2 and still not have played their best game. Plenty of room to improve
