Matas Ready For Big Leap But Bulls Lose To Bucks

Man, the Bulls lost this game and they got out to yet another 12point deficit early. I know we’re going to talk about individual performances, but I want to focus on that real quick. I know it’s it’s preseason, but this is something that hurt the Bulls last season. And as a matter of fact, the Bulls were one of I think they were the third best second half scoring team in the NBA. And they had to be because of how how how big of deficit they got out to early. On average, they came out of the first quarter down by six and a half points over the course of last season. So, while I don’t like to overreact to anything in preseason, but because this is such a major carryover from the from last couple of years for the Bulls, how worried about you are you about these slow starts? Well, I’m not wor I’m not going to say I’m worried about it. And the only reason is because right the first quarters aren’t abysmal. Remember last season the first quarters would be like the Bulls got clapped in the first quarter and had to literally drag themselves back into games. I don’t think that’s what we’re dealing with here early on. Now I’m not saying that it can’t be there, but a 10-point deficit is not the end of the world anymore. This this game started off Bulls were trailing by six by the end of the first quarter. That’s very respectable, right? And I think if you have a better fourth quarter, you really have an opportunity to win this game. But of course, none of the starters and all of that are end in the fourth quarter there. Um, but I thought the Bulls did a really good job fighting their way back into that first quarter, starting off shooting the ball, struggling, and sometimes that’s just going to happen, I think, with and and it it’s going to depend on, you know, kind of the system and how these guys get comfortable with it. But there were a lot of open looks created. There was just a lot of missed shots here in the first quarter. And there’s going to be some games where those shots fall and we’re going to be like, “Holy crap, the Bulls got out to a 40-25 start in the game.” Then there’s going to be other games where I think we’re going to talk about the Bulls being very similar to what they were. I think it was 36 to 29 to start that first quarter. To me, I think that’s just kind of the style of play that this Bulls team wants to play. And the fact to me I I think the more important thing is that they were able to fight back and make it competitive and adjust in quarter because in the in the middle of the first quarter I was like it’s time to stop shooting threes. They’re not falling. Iodumu checks in and he goes I’m not going to take a three. I’m going to the know he did take some but he took one I believe in the first half. Yeah. I think he only took one in the first half and then in the second quarter he started to take a few more. But it became we need to get buckets in the paint. Let’s start attacking the paint. And the fact that they shifted the mindset in the first quarter, I feel like that’s more important than what we’ve seen in past because it would truly be I know we’re hitting our head against this wall, but let’s keep slamming it against this wall until it finally starts to work. It didn’t work. And I don’t think that’s the mindset we’re dealing with here early. Well, the thing is is the Bulls. So the Bulls even in the first, second, and and I think third quarter, they took almost 11 three-pointers in each quarter. Now, the third quarter, they only took five. And I do think like and that’s because by the end of the second half when we were only down by four despite being outscored by 24 points at the three-point line in the first half of this game, the Chicago Bulls got to the free throw line uh 18 times in the first half of this game. only and that was compared to only five times by the Milwaukee Bucks. So like that’s another thing that Billy has been trying to impress here is like attack the rim, right? And that’s something they haven’t necessarily done the best in the first two preseason game. We were settling for three-point shots because we were hitting them at a lot better rate. And to your point, they realized that, hey, they’re not falling here. What do we need to do? Let’s attack. And by attacking, you’re either getting easy buckets or you get to the free throw line. The number of players that finish this game with four more free throws was ridiculous. That’s what you’re going to have to do on nights where your shots not falling. And we’re going to have nights like that. We’ve always had nights like that. We’re talking about this you bro this dates back to the Ben Gordon and Kurt Heinrich Lu Dang before Derrick Rose Bulls where we had times where we were just we couldn’t hit the hit a shot for quarters on in, right? So like we’re we’re talking about 20 years this has impacted this team in a multitude of different players. So it’s good that they understand to start attacking. IO did lead lead that way. We’ll talk about IO more specifically later on. Let me ask you this though, Pat. the slow start and you pointed out a great point of getting and attacking more, but how much do you think the presence of Kobe White helps avoid what we’re seeing specifically in the slow starts in preseason this year? Um, listen, I I think it’s a it’s very much like you said, right? It’s a team aspect. Um, the looks are there. If Kobe’s having a hot first quarter, sure, it can change that. If Kobe’s not having a hot first quarter, I think it’s very similar. You know what I mean? Th this is not a the Bulls were getting locked down defensively type of situation. And more times than not, I think when we’ve talked about these games, we’ve talked about these slow starts, that hasn’t been the case. It’s not like, oh my god, we’re playing the the 2007, you know, Los Angeles Lakers and and we’re getting clamped up completely because Kobe Bryant decid like it’s wide open looks in the corner that you just got to be able to make and you just got to have the the the talent and the skill set to make it. I think when we got to the second half of last season, you started to see a lot in those first quarters. We were knocking those shots down early. We were getting out to better starts. We were being more aggressive, finding our ways to the hole, attacking with shots that were working. Like to me, the slow start in this game. I I don’t know if Kobe White changes that completely. It depends on if Kobe White is knocking the shot down, but there were a lot of guys that we’re going to rely on to shoot the three that were missing easy three-pointers early on in this game. I uh uh Yeah, V three-point shots, baby, were all wide open. Yeah, V. Listen, and and I’ll be honest with you, my biggest beef with this entire game plan is do not revert to what you saw not work for Vu. V is not a three-point shooter. He’s a big that can hit some three-pointers. We’ve said that the whole five years he’s been here. is so annoying when I see these random game plans where that becomes the mindset and then in the second half of the game we start off with a couple of buckets to vouch with Kyle Kosmo on him where literally one he literally just flipped his hand like this and the ball went in and it’s like oh my god how all of a sudden he’s hot from the field no it’s not a surprise V told you the answer I’m better when I start in the paint I get comfortable I find my shot and then guys sag off and I’m able to knock down that three ball because I’m in rhythm. Rhythm matters. And V has been telling you that’s the important part of his game for five years and for some reason Billy Donovan keeps going, “Wait a minute. I thought you were freaking deadlift shrimp. You can’t knock down that three on a consistent basis.” I That’s hilarious. I I do think it was some of And I’m not saying it’s the right game plan, but I do think just trying to rationalize it in my head. It felt like there was some of that, oh, they’re shooting a lot of, the Bucks are shooting a lot of threes. We need threes. Vu, go out there and make some threes. Let’s run some threes for Vu. And as you said, it adjusted over, so I don’t want to harp on it too much. Um, it did just overtime. We were missing Kobe. We’re missing Kevin Hurder. Both those guys are solid from three. I think this game goes a lot differently. Um, it it’s played a lot differently. Both those guys are out there. But, you know, would a could have should. It is what it is. It was a slow start. Um, the Bulls do the best that they can and let’s be clear, this was still a winnable game down the stretch for the Bulls. They just didn’t get they didn’t get the momentum stops. They got some stops when they needed to. We got the lead down to two, got the lead down to four, but when we needed that next stop to get us the lead or whatever, we couldn’t do it. The Bulls held the lead for less than three minutes in this game. The biggest lead was three points. It lasted for 2 minutes and 44 seconds. That’s it. Other than that, the Milwaukee Bucks led the whole way through. And it is what it is. You’re not going to win them all. Like, it it is what it is. It is also preseason. And the lineups were a little weird. I honestly think the Bulls could have probably won the game in that last stretch, but then Javon Carter came in and thought he was Steph Curry. But I was nuts, bro. I listen. I was I was sitting I was like, “Yo, I’m going to have to give P Will his props today. He played pretty well. I like the shot. I like the defense.” And Billy Donovan called a whole timeout. And I know there’s no way he called this play to Javon Carter took the shot. I There’s no way you called a timeout and you said set up. no offense and just chucked that mug up. Chuck it cuz it it was off of the uh it was off of the challenge that the Bulls had in the fourth quarter with I think it was 49 seconds left and it was like, “Okay, you get your offense set up. You can you get yourself an opportunity. You can go out there. You can you can make this a competitive game.” And Javon Carter got that ball in his hands and he looked like Carlton in the Fresh Prince when he stole the ball from Bro, I was just like, “What just happened?” And I’ll give him credit. There was one I don’t be the one that you There was one shot that he took where literally the way that it that it left his hand. I was like, “Oh, we’re about to take the lead.” And it didn’t hit anything. I think it hit the net, bro. I was like, “Oh my god, it was short. It was so short.” I said, “What happened?” Like, that’s a shot I’m supposed to shoot. You’re in the NBA. You’re in the NBA, bro. You made the NBA. It was bad. It was bad. But we’re going to continue the conversation. We’re going to talk about Modis his 19 points and he did that not only guarding not every possession guarding Giannis being guarded by Giannis but uh Pat I told you before we started recording I’m I’m doing everything in me to fight my excitement over Modus Bzelis because I just don’t want to be disappointed but we’re going to talk about that after we get into this message from Pelaton Pelon is shaping the future of fitness with brand new Pelaton crossraining tread Plus powered by Pelaton IQ. More locked on bulls coming up next. All right, Pat. It’s it’s such a dangerous place to be as a Bulls fan when you’re like, I see it. I see it. And you just don’t want to let yourself get caught up in it. But Modus Bales had himself a game today. You know, he played really well in the first preseason game. It was a little rougher for him in the second preseason game. I think the Cavs after, you know, playing backto-back games against the Bulls, they really did understand how they wanted to guard Modis in that second game. They were trying to keep the ball out of his hands. And like we’ve seen with Modis basically every step of the way. Modis adjusts on the fly. And today, six of 11 from the field, 19 points, four rebounds, only one turnover in this game. We were negative eight when he was on the court, but that most of that’s due to that early run that he was out there. He was five of five from the free throw line. Modis Buzzellis just defensively he’s not backing down. Even with Giannis outpowering him at times, he didn’t back down not once. and he’s not only understanding, hey, how to use his strength and combination of length against certain players. Manus is not afraid to put his shoulder into people and seeing him put his shoulder into guys like Kyle Kosman and into Giannis Antoupo, even into Miles Turner at one point and just look at it like, “Yeah, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to go through you. Stop me. I’m getting excited, bro.” Brother, I told you, you saw it in the offseason. You saw what their plan was. Modis is going to be the focal point of this team. He’s going to be the focal point of this offense. And the part that’s exciting for me is the efficiency. The absolute efficiency that Modis is doing it at. On top of the fact that he’s getting to the free throw line and he’s knocking down his free throws at a higher clip this preseason. I get it’s still preseason. Got to do it in the regular season. It’s a lot easier to get into the paint in preseason. I think they will probably call the game a little different once we get to the regular season as well because something we also got to talk about is them saying Den Terry threw a punch. That was nuts. That was He went like this after Tory and Prince just grabbed his face like Anyway, I’m sorry. Go ahead. No, listen. That that that ref the whole night was pissing me off every time he got on the mic. Don Terry threw a punch and so he will be ejected from the game. Somebody said he looked like Super from the PJs and I can’t unsee it. Did we AI ref this? Is that what just happened? Was he AI? Was he really on the court at any point tonight? That was insane, bro. But outside of that, dog. Like, listen, be excited. Like this is a this is a feeling right now of a young player who not only clearly is taking a step who did it tonight verse what I would say is a Giannis Antmpo that kind of felt like hey I got to show y’all that like y’all playing a little too hard. I need to go out here and actually play a little bit cuz in that in that second quarter kind of going into third Giannis was like all right let me rip the rim off like y’all y’all y’all want to act like I’m not Giannis no more. He was playing versus a Jiannis Antmpo that I thought was engaged. He was getting to the bucket. I He almost put that boy down on that first bucket of the game. He almost put him down. Um the handle clearly has improved and his ability to shoot the three ball. Again, not a great day, two for six, but I think his ability to shoot the three ball when he’s confident and is feeling it is something that can become deadly. His biggest weakness is still the defense. So on the defensive end, he’s going to give up points. Unfortunately, it seems like he’s going to play to four. There’s going to be times where you’re going against Giannis. You’re going against uh um bigger guys, a Pascal Seakum even who has a little bit more length than maybe uh Madis has. And it’s going to put you in some tough positions. But this is a young man that is willing to do whatever it needs to be done on both ends to get the job done. And we haven’t seen a player like this in the building since Jimmy Butler. Do you want to hear something that it’s preeason, but something else? Like I we’re not going to see a lot of it. Do you want to guess a h how good do you think the minutes with Modis and Pee Will out out on the court together were today? With Modis and Pill out on the court today. Well, it it it was pretty good today. I ain’t going to lie. I I would say I would say a plus 14. Close. Well, so they were plus six. Okay. But they had a net rating of plus 15 and a half. Okay. A offensive rating of 129, a defensive rating of 113, a pace of 112. Bro, in almost 10 minutes, they almost were our best twoman combination out there. The only other twoman combination that was better than that was IO and P and Modus out there on the court together. Yeah. Yeah. I’m just I listen P will. It’s been still those moments that P will passive as hell and you’re just like P will why didn’t you just shoot that? But it seems like settling into this ninth tenth man role, whatever it is. I don’t know, bro. Seems like preseason, but it seems like maybe maybe there’s some motivation there. Listen, today was a different Pwell. I’m not I’m not going to sit here and just be the PW hater of the show. Today was a different Pwell. I I thought that he was aggressive more. I thought there were times where he and and listen, we’ve been saying for how long you been league? Five years now. For for years six now. The year six. So, so five actual playing years heading into year six. We’ve been saying for five years of this kid’s career. If you’re aggressive when the ball’s not in your hand, the ball will find you and you will have easy buckets. Him literally just going, I’mma cut to the basket. When Josh Giddy was holding the ball got him four points today. Him literally just running downhill and saying, hey, I’mma just be bigger than you and move you out the way and grab this board real quick. Got him four points today. Like that’s how you create the buckets. It’s why we said the opportunities with Modis are going to be so massive this season or last season. It’s it’s what we talked about with Javvante Green. They didn’t run plays for Javvante Green. And I’ll be honest with you, dog, it’s why I feel so strongly that Isaac Auroro may work out for this team this season because literally you had him guarding Giannis all day and he was just like, “Bet that shot didn’t go in. let me get my butt down this court and see if I can find a way to get the ball in a spot where I can get some easy points. Like that is truly how if you are not the focal point of the team, you get points and there are guys that get 10 to 15 points a night off of that alone and it makes the difference in winning and losing. I thought people had a good night tonight. I thought Madison on top of that was incredibly efficient yet again. And it truly felt I I’ll say this. It felt like because there is a number one or at least there was tonight that P will knew where to settle in at. Yeah, for sure. Let me ask you this question before we get out this segment too while we’re talking about our fords. You mentioned Isaac Auru. Um he’s shooting right now a combined just barely over 35% from the field. I know his role is not scoring at all, right? But he has had games of seven, six, and 11 points so far in the preseason. Are you concerned at all with the offense of Isaac? Cuz the way I look at it, he’s probably not even taking those shots if Kobe’s out there for real. Like he’s going to take some, but it’s not going to be nearly as much. But what he does as far as defense, like there are times he guarded Miles Turner, he guarded he guarded Giannis. Uh he switched on to uh what is it? AJ Green. Is that his name? AJ Green. AJ Green. It’s weird. There’s so many of them in the world, bro. So many. Yeah, there’s three of them at least in professional sports. It’s nuts. Um, but yeah, like are you are you worried at all about the offense of Isaac? No, because I think your goal with Isaac Curl was to recreate Giannis for 82 games. Um, you have Josh Giddy who you see the facilitating. He’s going to give you some scoring. He he doesn’t seem like he’s lacking any confidence in his scoring to this point, but it ain’t falling early on. I’ll say that. But he doesn’t seem like he’s lacking any confidence. And your goal was to have another player in this lineup that can bring you that defense. You put Isaac Crow on Giannis tonight. Again, like I just said, a Giannis that at a certain point it was like we want Modest to kind of get himself going offensively. This is your guy. And when Isaac Curl started clamping him up a little bit, he was like, “Oh, okay. Let me play for real. Let me go a little bit harder.” Like to me, the fact that you have a guy on your roster that you can put on Giannis and say, “I’m comfortable with that.” Who’s the guy you can’t put Isaac Auro on? like maybe a a a legit seven foot four Webby who might be 76 now because apparently he’s grown two more inches and that’s pissing me off. But I’m sick of it, bro. He He’s too He’s a video game character. I don’t like it. Yeah. Oh, yeah. He’s ridic you remember that that was that 2K 6? It was one year in 2K where it was like after year five in in in it wasn’t my league then. It was my association. It was a whole different Yeah. my association. Yeah, that it started being they called them the gods. Like it would literally be people in the draft that were like seven to 11 or whatever you were. Yes, bro. They just cuz they was like, “Oh, you won five championships in a row. We’re going to bring in people that you can’t stop now.” It It got stupid. So, like, yeah, that that to me like I think the fact that you can put Isaac Crow on a guy like Giannis tells you how confident they are defensively against him versus most of the league. Yeah. and that’s what you use Lonzo for. So, we’ll see what ends up happening. I think that’s going to be one that is going to be a very interesting asset that the Bulls can use. We got to talk about another interesting asset, IO Dumu and how he should have a big season coming up cuz I IO’s looking like, hey, yeah, if if one of y’all gonna get paid, I’m not leaving home. We got to talk about all that and more coming up next. But first, we got to tell you about a couple of sponsors we got here on Locked Door. First, we got to tell you guys all about Hold on. Throughout the f the first three games of preseason so far, IO’s averaging 16 and a half points on 64% shooting from the field. He’s averaging three and a half rebounds, one and a half assists per game so far. I know it’s preseason, but when you look at the impact, IO’s coming in and he knows exactly what to do. And it seems like IO’s at that place where the game is slowed down to him because you’re seeing him understand where to use his pace, where to go to step backs, where to shoot the three, where to drive at, where he has the size advantage. It seems like that he’s reached that that moment where everything kind of aligns. always describe it as you have a a period of time where the mental part of the game and the physical part of the game align for you. And for some great players, they can have that for for a decade. Some players, it’s it’s three or four seasons. Some of them it’s a couple of seasons, but you have that period of when that happens. It feels like Iowa’s maybe reached that level. We got to see if it’s going to happen in the regular season, but it seems like Iowa is poised to have a big season. And I said over on central and let me know if you could disagree with this pad that I don’t know if people if uh if I was going to be in the running for six man of the year because I think you have the team there has to be a certain level of team success for that to happen. But I do think he’s going to have a six-man of the year type impact for this Bulls team with what we’ve seen from him so far. How you feeling? Yeah, 100%. Listen, I told you his role on this team is going to be to fill in what Alex Caruso left. Um and that was his role last season. Be whatever you needed him to be. be be the any man, right? I think this second game versus Detroit last year really showed, you know, that mindset when all of a sudden it was just like, is I Dumu really like starting a fight with someone on the Pistons because they mowled off? Like that’s not something you expect to see from them. And it truly was. Whatever you need for this game, that’s what I’m willing to give you. And I think that’s what Iowa is going to be this season uh for the Chicago Bulls. And as far as winning six-man, is he going to win it? I probably not. I would assume not, right? Because where I have the Bulls at, I would say they’re probably a sixth to seventh seed uh in the Eastern Conference right now. I don’t see the sixth man of the year coming from a sixth or seventh seed in the Eastern Conference right now. But am I going to sit here and tell you that his production may not be so much that it couldn’t be? No. And and the reason being, I think he’s gotten the offensive game together. I think his confidence in that first step. He watched the tape from last season and he was like, “There’s not many people that can keep up with me when I take off on that first step.” And so I think that’s something that he’s confident in. I think it’s something that defenders are now watching for. And so when he fakes that first step with a jab step, you saw it tonight. Yay! That jab step, stepped back. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a step back. And he pulled the tray ball and I was just like, “All right, so now we’ve added that to the arsenal.” There’s a confidence in Iodumu that I think is going to be incredibly important not only to him but to the other players coming off of that bench because I would assume you’re saying he’s the leader of that bench this season and when your leader is confident in his game when your leader is strong that’s when the rest of the unit comes together and we saw that when we had the bench mob I mean Taj Gibson probably the guy you’d say is the leader of that benchmob and there were not like Taj felt like and and did for us like somebody you could throw out there and be like he’s a starter. Like the only reason he’s on the bench starter for us. So man, somebody is better ahead of him. So I think that the confidence on this bench is going to be through the roof this season. I think it’s going to be because of IO Duma. Yeah, I just seemed like he’s at a different level uh now. And you love it for I mean I talked a lot about how he basically had for the most part a regular offseason. and he was able to attack everything that he wanted to and and it feels like IO is is understanding of exactly what his role is and embracing that. Um, which is which is going to be really good for this Bulls team because you need that. He’s a stabilizer. I think having him train Zack Collins off the bench, just those three alone give me some confidence. Kevin Herder gets back and he shoots more how how we’re used to him shooting. Um, this could be a bench that is really really strong this year. And and that 10th man spot like even we’re talking about Jaylen had some solid minutes. Um Dan, I love that Dalon doesn’t back down from anybody, bro. If nothing else, Dalon, you remember last year he got in fight with Paul Reed? Yeah, it was just so random. I can’t believe they were throwing a punch, bro. It wasn’t a punch. He literally just kept going, “Come on, bro. Come on, bro. Come on, bro.” Like Tori and Prince wanted to start something with Dalon in that. That was so random, bro. Like, it was crazy. It was crazy. But see what happens, man. I mean, I feel like I’m I’m uh what we’ve seen from this team and the what they want to do and how they want to play, I feel like they have the right personnel for it. I I you know, the results of preseason aren’t going to necessarily indicate regular season uh production in those same areas. But that’s why I look at the at the what they’re trying to do. It feels like a team that’s going to be able to execute that part of it. How successful they can be in that, we’ll see. I told you we’ll see what ends up happening. Modest takes a step. You got the perfect team to put around him. Yeah. I mean, fun season and Bulls fans think it may be. I ain’t saying that Mod is going. Listen, on 11 shots, he’s put up 19 and 17. What he put up in the first game? 17, right? 19 in the first game. It was 11. He put up 19 in both games. On 11 shots. Give him five more shots. What’s he going to do? But that’s the thing. You got to you got to remember he’s getting those shots when Kobe’s not in there. So, we shall see. I mean, it’s a lot of people getting them shots when Kobe’s not in there. Listen, when Kobe come back, I don’t want to see Isaac Auro putting that ball in the air, bro. Like that Isaac Kuru shooting the ball like 25% on preseason so far. Hey, bro. It It’s so crazy too cuz it looks good. It does. Like his shot looks good, right? Hey, bro. Every time I look at him, I’m like, I don’t know why he’s missing. He just He’s not a good shooter, bro. You know, you know what’s going to happen is going to it’s going to literally be at some point where Okuru is going to have like a stretch like a month where he shoots like 40% from threes. It’s going to happen. Jaylen Smith J remember Jaylen Smith last year there was like a month where it was just like this dude can’t miss. This might be a starting uh center eventually if he if he keeps shooting. Maybe AK hit on this one. Maybe it was a and then it was just like oh nope that’s gone now. I feel like I feel like I feel like it felt like a month with Jaylen but I think if you go back and look it was probably like a week. Ah, it was definitely more than a week. It might have been two. It might We might be splitting hairs. It might have been two, but like Hold on. We got a little bit more time. I gotta go back and see now. See how long that was cuz it that was that stretching period where it was like, “Oh, Jaylen Smith came miss.” Wasn’t it on the West Coast like our second weird West Coast? I’m looking now. So, the month of November, he shot the ball 57% from three, but that was only four games. The month of November, he shot 29% from three. the month of December, 30% from three, 34% from three in January, 35 in February, 23 and 22% in it was over. Maybe maybe it was that 35. It was a lot of hot and cold games in that cuz it was when it was over. Oh, it was over. I remember he got in one game and he went like 0 for seven. He was like like, “Hey, bro, you your job ain’t to shoot. Stop doing that.” Like, but he before we get up out of here. Nah, man. That’s it. Appreciate y’all for tuning in and showing love.
