Help settle a bet.
My feeling is that the Knicks told Brogdon that they were going to go in a different direction, and this is what led to Brogdon announcing his retirement.
A Knicks fan in my life is adamant that Brogdon made this decision without communicating with the Knicks front office.
What do you think?

I mean I’m sure he communicated, impossible to say. If he wanted to keep playing, he’d try with someone else.
I’m guessing they told him he was unlikely to make the cut, but obviously no way to know for sure, unless Begley reports it
I think it’s very possible. They have around 15 or 16 guys that they would probably want on their roster. So to keep Brogdon they would have to move down a player like Tyler Kolek or one of their 7 footers, and they probably don’t want to do that. The roster is DEEP this year.
Does it matter? He was here for 5 min. Who cares why he retired?
Didn’t Shams report Brogdon was going to make the team?
No. Fred Katz explicitly said that wasn’t the case and he was going to make the team.
Wild baseless guess: Brogdan was thinking about retirement…that combined with potentially taking a young player’s roster spot pushed him over the edge. He’s known to be a really good dude.
i could be misunderstanding, but shams said that brogdon was “set to make the regular season roster, but had been contemplating retirement.” im guessing those preseason games made him realize that after those injuries he just doesnt have enough gas in the tank for a full regular season and playoff run
He was making the team and a roster move would’ve been made, most likely with Kolek. A bad preseason outing from a 9 year vet likely didn’t change things, especially for a guy with his career. It’s possible he didn’t like the role he would’ve had on the team, not enough minutes, or maybe just decided to hang them up. Until we hear otherwise I think we just have to go with it being his choice.
I strongly doubt that the Knicks were going to release Brogdon. Just look at their depth chart and who do you see as PG behind Brunson? Is he an upgrade over last year? A mostly healthy Brogdon would have been a clear upgrade and a mostly known quantity.
Instead the Knicks have the same questions about who runs the show when JB sits. Can Deuce/Josh/Clarkson fill in? Will Kolek develop in time? Is there anyone else on the trade market?
Keeping even a hobbled Brogdon made much more sense.
I think the truth is that he retired. He said he didn’t have the will to play. It showed on the court. I remember thinking that he looked slow and not into the game while watching pre season
I hope they give kolek enough time early on on the season to see what he’s got before the deadline.
Maybe. The weird thing is that if he just played this season, he’d be locked in for the NBA’s pension program for life. Just seems odd that he’d call it quits right before then, which makes me think either injury or hinting he was getting cut.
