Zion’s health is important for this team. Really important, right? Like that’s not an understatement. If he’s healthy, they can be good. It’s as simple as that. So, how do you keep them healthy? One of the phrases we’ve heard a lot in the NBA is load management. Usually, just resting guys. That’s not what the Pelicans need to do here. What they need to do when it comes to Zion Williamson is load distribution. There’s a difference there. And I’m going to explain what it is. You know what? Let’s just dive into explaining what it is right now. You know, one of the things that jumps out at you when you look at how well Zion Williamson played last season was his efficiency was the best we’ve ever seen from it. In just 28.6 minutes, he averaged 24.6 points per game, more rebounds than he’s ever averaged before, and more assists than he’s ever averaged before. Basically, put up careerhighs across the board in fewer minutes. If you look at it per 36 minutes, you know, for each season of his career, he averaged more points, more rebounds and more assists by a good bit than any other season he’s ever had. Part of that has to do, and hear me out on this, by him playing fewer minutes. And you might be going, “Wait, what?” You saw this a lot with Drew Holiday in the past. You know, there’s often a threshold number for players that they’re real good up until that and then it starts to be diminishing returns when you cross that minutes threshold. Drew Holiday, if you put him out on the court for more than 8 minutes at a time when he was in New Orleans, the production really started to dip after that 8 minute stretch. They played him 8 minutes, sat him down, got him some rest, played him for eight more minutes. When he hit that and you saw the production starting to dip, you’d pull him from the game. Maybe Zion’s magic number here in terms of minutes per game is not in, you know, is not 36, not 34, not 33, but maybe closer to 30 minutes. It’s about kind of keeping him fresher so that he can be efficient in the time that he’s out there on the court. But if you play him too much, he gets a little bit more tired. Naturally, production goes down. Now, maybe that’s improved by the new physique, the new shape he’s in, but you get the concept of what I’m saying here. But the idea to me would not be play him fewer minutes. It’s how do you use him in those minutes that he’s out there on the court. It is possible to find Zion Williamson rest when he’s out there on the court. So rather than making him grind through 34 minutes, you know, or 36 minutes with a high usage rate or playing him just 28 and letting him go full boore during those 28 minutes, is there a balance here? And I want to look at two areas, scoring and playmaking. Basically, a huge burden is placed on him in both of those areas. He’s got to do the bulk of the scoring for New Orleans. He needs to do the bulk of the playmaking for New Orleans, but that’s going to tire you out when you have that high of a usage rate. Is there a way to drop that down a little bit while still keeping him on the court? Because, frankly, he’s a threat, and that’s an important thing. You know, last year his usage rate was the highest it’s ever been. I don’t think that’s bad, but I don’t know if he’ll be able to do that for 34 minutes. 28. Yeah. So, if that’s the case and you’re going to play him 34 minutes at that same usage rate, I bet he’s not going to be as efficient and that’s not what you want. So, what do they do here, right? It’s basically you need other dynamic scoring threats to take some of the burden off of him. This has not been Brandon Ingram throughout Zion Williamson’s career. Teams were content to let Brandon Ingram take mid-range jumpers and they would still kind of key in on Zion. They would still focus in on him and they were like, “Yeah, yeah, do the thing you want to do. that’s how we beat you. But now things feel a little bit different. There is just more a different dynamic to this team. Trey Murphy’s poised to take a leap and he’s not, you know, looking like he’s going to be a threelevel scorer this year. You know, he was the number one option for the team when everyone was hurt when he was healthy out there. And he delivered over 21 points per game last season. He was phenomenal. He easily could have won uh most improved player last season if he had played enough games. he would have been in the running for it at the very least. So, he’s ready to take that leap. And as a three-level score who’s got a much deeper bag of moves, his handles improve to get to the basket. He can take on a lot of that. It allows you to use Zion offball at times. And those offball moments where he doesn’t have the ball in his hands where he’s not driving downhill at full speed, flying into bodies, getting hacked, getting beaten up. It allows him to rest so that when he does be your main guy with a high usage rate, he can go as hard as he needs to go during that stretch. Same thing for Jordan Pool here too. I think having him as that microwave score, even though he can be not boomer, but there’s moments when he’s a little bit inconsistent, you know, he’s shown that he can play in a variety of different ways. He is an insanely good threat off of the dribble pulling up with the ball in his hands and you need to put a defender on him if not two at all times. That eases the burden on Zion Williamson in a way that it wasn’t it hasn’t been eased on him in the past. Just having those two guys is is phenomenal when you look at a guy like CJ McCullum. You know, they brought him in to kind of be that pull-up shooter originally, but he wasn’t really the downhill attacking threat. you know, as he’s aged a little bit, he still has moments of that, but he’s more of a spot-up shooter. It’s not Jordan Pool right now. You know, Jordan P is that downhill attacking threat that if you give him some space from three, he’s going to pull up and shoot it. And that’s a really good thing. All of that’s to say is Zion probably has more, you know, teammates to to help him like help score and take some of that burden off of him that fit what the Pelicans want to do offensively than he’s ever had before. That’s where you find him some rest. That’s where you find him sometimes when he’s out there on the court drawing at least one guy, if not two, to the ball and opening things up for others with his court gravity and you just don’t need to do him much. He can jog around. He can just do some offball cuts. You know, he can stand in the corner three and then just sprint down on a baseline cut, something like that. But he doesn’t need to constantly have the ball in his hand. His touch time doesn’t need to be high. That is a number that is tracked. If you could get his time per touch down a little bit, was around 4 seconds, three and a half, 4 seconds last year whenever he got the ball, had it for three and a half or 4 seconds. Get that down a little bit. If you can drop that down a little bit, that means he’s conserving energy for the times where you need to ramp him up a little bit more. You know, there’s a difference. That’s the difference here between load management and load distribution. Load management means you’re just sitting the guy down and it’s that simple. Load distribution means you’re you’re sharing all of that with everybody else. You’re taking that usage rate and other people are using that up a little bit too to keep somebody fresh here. This will help Zion down the stretch of games. This is going to help him, you know, you would imagine in fourth quarters to close out games. This is what the Pelicans need to be focusing on right now. You need to keep Zion Williamson not just healthy and on the court all season long, but fresh. We’ve seen him in fourth quarters lumbering, you know, breathing heavy and clearly being gassed. Now, again, I do think the the conditioning he’s in, the shape he’s going to be in is going to help that, too. But if that just means you’re using all that extra energy up throughout the course of the game, he’s still going to have nothing left in the tank in the fourth quarter. So finding ways to manage his minutes most efficiently, making sure that these are good minutes you’re getting from him, I do think is a really important thing that this team is very much capable of doing. You know, this was eye opening to see how well Zion Williamson played in limited minutes last year. He would not have had the same efficiency if he was playing 32, 33, 34 minutes per game. There was a reason they were keeping him at that 28.6 6 number, you know, second lowest of his career behind his rookie year, which makes some sense there. So, I do think if you can find the right way to kind of load distribute, I think I’m making that phrase up. I don’t know if that’s ever really been uttered before. Um, maybe it has. Maybe we’re inventing new things here on locked on Pelicans, but you know, if you’re doing that, then yeah, he’s going to be really good all season long. And that is a highly encouraging thing and that’s going to help New Orleans. So you have guys that can do the scoring. You have players like Trey Murphy, Jordan Pool ready to really take that on but also fit better around everything. But what about playmaking? It’s not just scoring. It’s creating for others too. The Pelicans are actually in a good spot for that as well. Let’s look at that. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans. So, we’re looking here in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans on how to lessen the burden on Zion Williamson to take some of that pressure off of his shoulders so that when you need him, when you’re calling on him, which is still going to be a ton, he’s really ready to deliver, he’s not tired, right? Like, that’s kind of what it is. It’s going to just lessen the burden on him so he can be the best version of himself. Playing fewer minutes than ever, but his efficiency skyrocketed in fewer minutes. That’s kind of the goal here. Can you make the most of every possession you have? And you’ve seen kind of a bit of a blueprint for how to do that with Zion Williamson. So, we looked at the scoring. It’s Trey Murphy and it’s Jordan Pool. Like, those are the two guys that are going to be the other scorers here for this team. I feel very good about both of them. Um, in that situation, if they can both get to like 18 points per game, I think that’s a real big thing for the New Orleans Pelicans, assuming everybody is healthy. If someone’s hurt, then they should be in the 20 point per game range. But what about playmaking? You know, you look at this and it’s kind of been the point Zion show and he’s really the only one that can create for others, you know, fully during his time here. Ingram was was an underrated playmaker and passer, but you know, wasn’t fully ready to kind of step into that role. And you’re not looking for anyone to fully be in that role, but you need a bunch of other people to create, I think. And that’s important. Creation, especially in the playoffs, you need like three, four guys that can do that sort of thing. right now when you kind of remove Ingram in the past from the equation, it’s just been Zion. But this is also why they so but but the point I’m trying to make here is they have other guys that can do this. You know, Dejonte Murray whenever he returns is a guy that’ll be able to do that. They brought him in to be the point guard, right? To create for others, keep the team organized down the stretch, create for others. As simple as that. He’ll come back and he will be healthy. We just didn’t really get to see it last season. you know, they’ll ease him back into it, but it does give some sort of playmaking creator with bench units, I think, that you can easily fit next to Zion Williamson. You also have Jeremiah Fears, right? Brought in to be that downhill attacking threat. I don’t think he’s going to do much as a score this season. You know, I went over what his rookie numbers, we kind of expected them to be. They’re not going to be bad. They’re not going to be incredible. I don’t know if he’s going to help the team win. And for him, it’s more process over results to me this season. And I think the process of how he’s going to play is going to be good. So, you brought him in to playmake a little bit, too. You know, you also have Jordan Pool who’s going to be your de facto starting point guard, and he’s shown he can do it in, you know, not full-time, but as a part-time lead guard. He’s actually fine at that. You don’t want him being your full-time full-time like primary ball handler every possession he’s on the court, but you only needed him to do it sometimes, right? It’s still going to be in my opinion the majority of Zion Williamson. It’s still going to be point Zion in a Zion ccentric offense, but they want to have some other options. One that if you can put Zion off ball, even if it’s just him standing around, he’s a threat out there and teams will account for that. The court gravity is big. That’s going to allow him to catch his breath. that’s going to allow him on the next possession to have a little bit more energy to maybe score a little bit better or you know whatever it might be. So having Jordan Pool take on some of that role, some of that burden alongside Murray when he’s back, alongside Jeremiah Fears when he comes back, that reduces the pressure off Zion shoulders. That’s what we’re looking to try and do here so that he can make the most of every minute he’s really out there as your primary guy. But someone else that I think is kind of forgotten about in this is someone like Derek Queen, you know, and and I see everyone saying like Zion and Queen don’t really fit together and all that. And truthfully, there is something to that, but Queen is a very underrated playmaker, particularly out of the center position. I think he could have an NBA comp in theory alongside like Alparin Shenun a little bit. I think this is someone who, you know, really can kind of be your point center, which is tough. It’s really tough to build around that kind of player. The Houston Rockets have kind of seen it. Even the not that he’s going to any not that Shenhun or anyone is anywhere close to Nicolo Joic, but that’s the type of player that’s tough to build around, but is very creative and useful to have. And while yeah, the fit isn’t natural between Zion and Queen, you know, if you’re running Queen as kind of a a playmaker for you and you’re using Zion off ball, though neither stretches the court. If you’re running a bit of a motion-based offense, having guys fly around, I think you can get away with a lot of that. Truthfully, I think that’s the type of thing where there’s just so much playmaking with others that maybe it just allows you to play Zion 32 minutes instead of 34 because Queen’s taking on some of that playmaking role where you can just kind of plug him in. I I’ve referred to him as Zion Insurance at times. Should Zion go down, you can still run semblance of that offense than you would be able to otherwise because no one can kind of replace that skill set. Except you, you know, Zion is such a unique big. What are you going to do? Queen’s pretty unique. So you got a kind of unique big as a backup there I think which can help with some of this. So there is that level of it as well. So Queen can take on some of the playmaking burden when he’s ready which won’t be you know to start the season. It doesn’t sound like he’s going to be ready to play this to start the season though. Hopefully he’s definitely kind of getting close. You saw him at you know the back to basketball event shooting doing some other things. So, he’s certainly getting there, but the Pelicans have more playmaking, I think, around this team than we’ve seen from it before. Herb Jones can take on some of the playmaking. He did a lot of that in college at Alabama. We’ve seen some playmaking from him here. Trey Murphy grew as a playmaker and as a passer last season, averaging it was over four assists per game, I think the numbers were. It’s actually pretty good all things considered. So when you look at all of that, Trey, sorry, Trey Murphy was three and a half, close to four. So you start to see that and you’re like, “Oh yeah, this this could maybe work. There might be enough playmaking here cuz Trey can do it. It look, if you needed a possession down the stretch and he had the ball in his hands, he could do it. Zion can do it. Jordan P can do it. Murray certainly is going to be able to do it. Fears will just drive and attack the basket and try and create for others that way.” There’s that, right? Queen can do some of this. We haven’t even mentioned Jose Alvarado in this one. I mean, he’s a point guard. So, you start to look at this and you start to feel a little bit better maybe about where they are and what they’re going to be able to do and realize, yeah, maybe there is like enough kind of creation on this team and for everybody to try and like fill those kind of roles that takes some of the burden off of Zion Williamson having to do it every single possession. And so if you start to really kind of look at the team that Joe Dumars is building, remember I was like, h depth, whatever, and then you start to kind of dive into it a little bit more, you see it a little bit more in preseason. We’re going to play against that, you know, the team’s going to play against NBA teams this week, so that’s going to help. All of a sudden, the vision, you know, starts to come to fruition and you can kind of see what they’re doing here, right? Was Joe Dumar’s, you know, still out on, you know, grading the OCE and everything, but was there more of a plan here? Does he understand Zion Williamson and what Zion needs more so than other people realize? And is that kind of the key to unlocking Zion? If you’re looking by how Zion played last year, yeah, maybe it is. Yeah, maybe it is. What do you think? Let me know in the comments down below. There’s one area I don’t want to see the burden reduced on Zion Williamson, though. I’m going to tell you what that is coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. We got to wrap this up quickly here, but we’re talking about ways to ease the burden on Zion Williamson and who’s really ready to fill those kind of roles and how maybe Joe Dumar has built the right team around Zion Williamson to kind of maximize him by making his life easier, not by making him do more, but by just having other guys be able to take on some of that burden that has long been on Zion’s shoulders kind of alone. But one area should one area that burden shouldn’t be lessened. Right? We’ve talked about playmaking, who can kind of take on some of that from Zion, give him a little bit of rest even when he’s on the court. We talked about scoring and who’s ready to take the leap and kind of take on that burden too. All that makes sense. One area that shouldn’t be lessened, leadership from Zion Williamson. They don’t need to bring in necessarily another vocal leader or anything like that. This is something that Zion needs to embrace, needs to step into this role, grow into this role, and this is not an area that should be shared. Certainly, you want everyone to hold everybody accountable. Don’t get me wrong. You want that kind of culture in the building here. But as the leader of the team, it needs to be Zion Williamson. It’s needed to be Zion Williamson for a minute. He seems to be embracing the fact that he is a leader here. He’s talking to the media post practice more than we’ve seen from him in the past. We’ll see if that happens during the season. We’ll see if that happens when there is an injury. You’ve heard Joe Deumar say, you know, you lose a game, the leader of the team needs to be the first one to speak. Yes, Zion needs to be the leader of this team. And it does seem like he is eager to step into that role, embracing stepping into that role, but that is not an area where fully it should not be shared. There should be heavily on Zion Williamson to be the guy you lead by example, playing hard every possession, defending hard every possession, unless they’re kind of keeping you on ball to relax you a little bit. But you get what I’m saying. It’s you need to be the leader who does all of the right things, all of the correct things on and off the court. So, they should not ease that burden on Zion Williamson. Have guys going to be there vocal and when people need to be called out, let Zion call them out and have others do it, too. whenever it’s needed, whatever it takes. But being the leader of the team, the person setting the tone, that needs to be Zion Williamson. And that burden in my opinion should not be shared. The good news is it feels like he’s willing to do that. And maybe he just feels more empowered. Maybe he connects more with Joe Dumars. Whatever it might be, they’ve started to kind of, you know, at least now it’s early on in the season, things can change. They’ve started to find the right area where this does seem to work and that’s a highly encouraging thing. What do you think about the depth about easing the burden on Zion Williamson to get the best out of him on a minute-by minutes or per possession basis? Let me know in the comments down below. I think this could work really really well to just get the most efficient use of Zion Williamson this coming season. So, that’s going to do it for this episode of Locked On Pelicans. Dude just let Zion play without making everything a question mark. No wonder you couldn't get an interview with him. Stay Over There.
