i know they said it’s “dangerous” can one suffocate under all that armour or what? cause players can fight but goalies aren’t able to becuase the refs break them up immediately.

Goalie fights definitely happen, but if there’s already two different fights going on, the refs are unfortunately always going to stop the tendies from going at it.
That was sick. Let em tumble.
Where was this?
The actual answer is because you aren’t allowed to remove your helmet during fights anymore, and goalies necessarily have to take off their masks to fight. Makes goalie fights more dangerous
But more importantly its because the NHL hates fun
I would guess it’s because goalies pretty much have to take their helmets off, which is supposed to make everything stop anyway.
Pretty sure its the whole players not supposed to fight without their helmets on thing? But then again i think Reaves was still allowed to fight the other year without his helmet from the get go so who really knows
It’s like deer, they get into a head on head and there pads get stuck together. Google quad leg amputation Sweden 1997. Changed the sport forever
You hit the nail on the head. When equipment started getting heavier we lost 8 goalies to suffocation in just a few short years. The armour gets pulled over their head and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Some say ol’ Olgilthorpe used to do it for fun.. but that’s never been proven.
Brent Johnson.
Because Gary Bettman hates having fans being happy.
VERNON AND ROY WITH THE PADS!
Why do the blue unis have so many guys on the ice
Because the NHL hates fun
Best sport, dumbest league.
There’s your answer.
I was so mad when the refs didn’t let Fleury fight Binnington.
well then you have to get the emergency goalie up and ready…the league doesnt like having to resort to them, they even changed the rule this year
Was always such a rarity.
I think coaches and owners don’t like their goalies fighting as they’re the fewest on the bench. If the 3rd line d-man or 4th line winger drops the gloves, who cares. Got men to take their places.
Goalies though, usually there’s just the backup. And the potential for a concussion protocol post-fight, and more games sitting on the bench. Big risk to get in a few punches.
Those the Komets? Hell yeah!
Having played goal the only place you have to punch, because of the padding, is pretty much the face and back
I’ve always heard it’s because there’s too much risk of your tendy getting injured. Player gets hurt in a fight and you can pretty easily shuffle your lines to fill the gap. One of your goalie gets hurt and suddenly you’re having to put in your back-up and if the injury is serious you have to bring someone up from the minors.
Dude in white got cold clocked multiple times. Bro had to be begging for the refs to jump in.
Willing fight between two well padded combatants? Not allowed.
Cheap shots to the back of the head and running guys into the boards from behind? Good , clean Florida Panther hockey play!
I feel another big reason is that you can’t penalize them (personally) unless you eject them.
Sure, you can give them majors for fighting, but someone else will serve it.
It feels like you’re asking what happens when two Falcon punches collide, in other words.
Goalie fights are more dangerous due to their equipment, and it affects the game a lot more when you fight a goalie into a state where they can’t play anymore. A defensemen gets TKO’d? who cares, put in the 2nd stringer. A goalie gets TKO’d, put in the 2nd stringer and hope to God they don’t throw the game.
Dan Cloutier challenging the entire Islanders bench after beating the back of Tommy Salo’s head in has been burned in my brain for 20+ years
There is a rule against leaving the crease to participate in an altercation or scrum that is a minor penalty. If it’s to fight, it can be a game misconduct. So basically, if you leave your crease to fight, it’s an automatic minor no matter what is going on, and could be a game.
So, the goalie would put the team in a situation where they basically get an instigator penalty, go on the PK, when they otherwise might just have offsetting penalties.
Additionally, crossing the red line to participate in the game in a penalty, whether their is a stoppage or not, so this would again include fights, and will also result in a penalty.
So, why don’t goalies fight? Because it will almost always end up putting their team on the PK, no matter what, and they are likely to get a misconduct. If we have a situation where two goalie meet at center ice to fight, you are still likely to put your team on the PK.
Lastly, while this isn’t in the rule book, it has been established that it is an automatic ejection to cross the red line to fight. Even if both goalies skate to center ice to dual, someone is getting ejected and fined, likely both. And, no one, sans the fans, wants this happening. No one.
Personally, I don’t want goalies fighting. My team needs their tendies bad right now lol.
They are allowed tho. You literally shared a post of one, asking why they aren’t allowed
If you ever played competitive hockey the worst thing that can happen in a fight is a goalie falling on top of you.
They’re at opposite ends and rarely interact. What are they going to fight about anyway? A terrible/good save?
Okay new rule. Not only do goalies not get kicked out of the game for fighting automatically. But they are now required to fight once per game. If the goalie fight doesn’t happen organically. After the final whistle the goalies are required to go to center ice and drop the blockers
Goalies are a lot harder to replace and you can’t take your mask off. Goalie fights are the most respected fight of all of hockey. I was so damn fortunate to see Poirier completely D E M O L I S H Askarov in person. Still hate Ask, but mad respect on him stepping up.
Come on nailers you gotta show up better than that!
Wouldn’t it be unusual for the goalies to be playing near each other enough for a fight to emerge between them?
The stick slap at the start to egg them on is cracking me up.
I would rather not have my goalie possibly getting injured in a fight, even if it’s the backup goalie. They are way harder to replace than the usual bottom of the lineup player that are more likely to get into a fight.
Fighting isn’t “allowed”. It’s just usually too dangerous for the linesmen to break it up when two players decide to go. Goalie fights are much less dangerous because of the padding. It’s slower movements and less forceful.
Why would goalies want to throw down in the first place? It’s not like they’re taking cheap shots from one another during the game and they’re too far away from each other to talk smack.
Goalies cannot cross the red line, so unless they skated to center ice and stayed on opposite sides the whole time, one of them breaks that rule. Personally, I love a good goalie fight if they are both ready to go. Loved Roy getting a beat-down by Vernon.
