Kansas City Chiefs vs Detroit Lions – NFL Week 6 | Field Pass Pregame Show ๐
Heat. Heat. N. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] This team is hungry. This team isn’t done. This team is not going to be denied. Energy all day. Energy all day. [Music] Nick Balden makes the hit. It’s intercepted by Ryan Cooking low. [Music] The Chiefs dropped a heartbreaker last week, but there wasn’t much time to dwell on it as we’re already back on the national stage. And what better time to get back on track than on Sunday Night Football against one of the league’s best teams in the Detroit Lions. We are 2 hours from kickoff. We’ve waited all week for this very moment. It’s finally here. It is time for football in Chief’s Kingdom. Let’s do this. My name is Matt McMullen joined by Voice of the Chiefs Mitch Holtus. This is Field Pass presented by Storage Mart. And Mitch, tough one last week, but we saw some good things. Just a matter of cleaning up the mistakes. Well, the league is so tight. Uh very similar to what we talked about on game uh on the rewind after the game that the margin of winning and losing in this league is so all three phases had some really good things and then all three phases were culpable in the loss. So, a team like tonight, a team that’s won 19 of the last 22 games in the Detroit Lions, you can’t have those happen uh in any of the phase. And so, yeah, a lot of good things happen, but if a lot of good things happen and you still like flunk one course, uh you’re going to not make the honor roll. Yeah, just some weird stuff last week. 13 penalties in that game. Uh the most for the Chiefs in a single game since the 2018 season. It been a while. Uh and of course, the 99 yard pick six. I mean, that’s just demoralizing. you drive all the way to the Jags three yd line, ends up in seven points the other way. Now, to the Chief’s credit, they still fought back despite all of that to be in a position to win the game at the very end. Uh just couldn’t get it done. I think that’s a good lesson that you can’t let a good team like Jacksonville hang around uh when you make those kind of mistakes. No. And again, there’s things that people forget. The third and 15, Chiefs up 14 to nothing, and a defensive pass interference penalty that was committed in front of the sticks. Even if the catchers made, it wouldn’t have been a first down. So, that opened the door. Otherwise, the Chiefs are going to get the ball and got the least I think up 170, probably 2100. Completely changes the game. And then the other one with the offensive culpability is to have possession four, possession five. We talk about all the time, you win the toss, you get backtoback possessions. Three and out, three and out. Well, that’s just enough to leave the door open uh for the Jags. Even if you get field goal, field goal, you’re up 20 to7 and that game uh is completely different. Yeah, those things unfortunately overshadow uh the good things and particularly on offense where the Chiefs piled up nearly 500 yards to go four for five in the red zone. Patrick Mahomes was brilliant outside of the pick six. Uh he actually accounted for the fourth most total yards of any player in a single game this year in that one. Uh so he was awesome. I mean that’s two weeks in a row now we’ve seen the offense we thought we’d have at the beginning of the year and to get it done in different variety of ways v formations. We mentioned the attacking the edge even at the first level of the defense whether it’s flip passes or whatever with Bashard Smith and Xavier Worthy. Then to see Taekquin Thornton, the three catches he made was awesome because they’re all three different plays. Uh one was a cover zero blitz. He’s got coverage manto man and he he’s able to make that play against a one-on-one defender. Another one he goes with pad on the play. It’s the play within a play knows where to go. And then the other one was spatial relationship to understand where’s the boundary, where’s my defender, where’s the ball and he made all three of those plays. So Taekquin Thornton is growing up right in front of us. Yeah, I mean you laid it out. We were explosive last week. We had 10 plays of at least 15 yards in that game against the Jags, the Chiefs most in nearly two years. Uh Mahomes got everybody involved like you laid out. Seven different players reported double digit receiving yards against Jacksonville. Hopefully we see some more of that here tonight, but we did get some bad news not too long ago. Not going to have Josh Simmons tonight at left tackle. No, Josh Simmons is not here. Uh he has been ruled out and it’s personal reasons uh in California. So, not having him tonight and he has grown so much and has been so good week to week. We didn’t talk about the offensive line yet because I thought their game last week when I reviewed the video was their best game collectively as a five person group since the zero sack game back in Super Bowl 57 against the Eagles. I thought it was that good. But now without Simmons, you got to look at Jaylen Moore. If you’re going to go six offensive linemen, probably still Caliendo, uh, Wany Morris has to be ready. This changes a lot. Not saying it changes everything, but it changes a lot in the way you approach this game, especially with Aiden Hutchinson on the other side. Yeah, let’s talk about this Lions defense a little bit. Uh, because their strength as a defense is their pass rush. Uh, they rank second in the NFL right now in sacks with 16. And yeah, Hutchinson leads the way. He’s tied for the NFL lead and pressures with 31. How do we slow down Hutchinson here tonight? Well, you can do a couple things. One, you can double team, but the other side is having a big You mentioned there’s 16 sacks. He’s got five. That leaves 11. Who’s got the other 11? So, uh, and the other side’s involved, too. So, you can’t just completely just double Hutchinson all the time, but the side to side horizontal attack is one way of slowing guys down. Uh, the fact and Hutchinson’s such a superb athlete, but we’ve seen it with the Bosas, we’ve seen it, Khalil Mack, we’ve seen it even with Max Crosby. you get a flip pass, you get an end around, you get a u uh you get action going uh to you know in front of the eyes of that pass rusher, they have to at least account for it. Especially when you have a guy like 42 or 43 running it in the fact it’s Pashard Smith or Xavier Worthy because if you just run right by him like McKinnon did against Abosa in San Francisco a couple years ago, it’s a touchdown. So, there’s no pass rush when they’re just running into the end zone like sticking the tongue out at you like uh the Road Runner. And here’s the good news for the Chiefs. As good as the Lions pass rush is, it was kind of surprising when I dove into them and all their numbers. It’s the number 17 ranked scoring defense. You would think it’d be like top 10. It’s not. Uh they’ve allowed 18 plays of 20 or more yards this year. That’s 10th most in the NFL. And this is the seventh worst red zone defense in the league. Now, part of that is they’ve faced a ton of opponent possessions this year. They faced 57 opponent possessions, second most of any team in the NFL. I do think the Chiefs can move the ball on these guys, though. And for what it’s worth, they’re missing some major players in their secondary, too. Well, and to your point, it’s it’s glaring that they’re tied for 25th in red zone defense, and they’re 19th in third down defense. Yeah, those are the two base subjects uh when you look at a defense. So, it’s it’s weird. And then the and the 20 plus plays you mentioned, they’re down five corners. Five, not two, not three, five. They are down five dudes at cornerback. They’re they signed literally guys off the street this week. Um they got the mallet kid who’s been around the league, but he was with or another Houston’s practice squad Wednesday. So to me, wow. Uh what do you do? I mean, how sophisticated can you get in coverages when I got guys that are just coming in off the street going, “Hey, we can’t run all the stuff we ran at camp cuz all the stuff we ran at camp, those guys aren’t even here.” And you got Rockin playing one corner. You know, the one guy’s Amique Robinson who we talked about, he was uh at Louisiana Tech, former Raider. A former Raider. So, we’ve seen him before, too. And the safeties, we’re waiting to see how healthy they’re going to be. Two good safeties. But can will they have to be vanilla on the back end? You can’t get super sophisticated cuz I can’t teach you calc and pass the test on Sunday when you just joined us on Wednesday or Thursday. So, the Chiefs, I think, will get opportunities if they protect one more click. One more click without Josh Simmons. That’ll be a challenge. And with that in mind, the equalizer we have to avoid in this game is turnovers. Because if there’s one thing that Detroit’s defense has done really well this year, it’s take the football away. Uh they have nine takeaways this year, third most in the NFL. And they play great complimentary football. Uh because if you look at this, uh they’ve scored 41 points off of those takeaways. Also third most in the NFL. And dating back to the beginning of the 2023 season, these guys are 19-0 when they win the turnover margin. 19-0. That’s the best record in the NFL in that situation. Conversely, when they lose the turnover margin, they’re only five and six. Much more level playing field. So, that’s the path to victory for the Chiefs tonight. Win the turnover battle. But we talk about Aiden Hutchinson up front. We talk about the decimated cornerback position, but their linebackers are good. Their linebackers will run around. Analone will make plays. So, a lot of those turnovers, Jack Campbell, the kid from Iowa, uh, grew up at Cedar Falls, Iowa, home of University of Northern Iowa, but they went to University of Iowa. But the point is those linebackers are account for a lot of those takeaways. Now it’s not only them getting it, but it’s a tip pass or it’s affecting the route which leads to somebody else getting the interception. The linebackers are very, very active and very hard to block. It’s exactly what we talked about on field pass last week. Don’t turn the ball over against the Jags. Unfortunately, that pick six was the difference in the game. Can’t let that happen here tonight against Detroit because this Lions offense is just way too good to give them second chances in short fields. This is actually the number one scoring offense in the NFL right now at nearly 35 points per game. Jared Goff is having a great year. He leads the NFL in completion percentage right now at 75%. What stands out to you about this Lions offense? Historic. We talked about leading the league this year in offense uh in point production. They also did it last year and they’re about the same level, 33, 34 points a game. Get this one. If they continue at this pace, averaging 35 points a game, it will be the best in the National Football League since the early days of World War II and the Chicago Bears of Sid Luckman in 1941-42. That’s how good this Lions offense is. And they don’t have really any weakness. Uh now they’re beating up on the offensive line on the left side much like the Chiefs are tonight. So they got to spackle something together. But when you got pane Su who’s the best right tackle in the league. You’ve got Leaporta who’ve got going to tight end. I’m on Ross St. Brown’s an animal. Uh 25 first down catches on 35. Every target’s a catch. And then the runners. And the runners are outstanding. And I mentioned Jameson Williams. They got then Tlaw is a great addition for him, the rookie out of Arkansas. So they’re just to your point, your point’s so good about the turnovers. Jacksonville may convert those turnovers. These guys will convert it. You just count on it. Well, they have weapons everywhere like you laid out. I mean, so many good players. St. Brown’s been incredible this year. Like you said, zero drops this season. He leads the NFL in touchdown grabs. But yeah, it begins with their running backs and their running game. I think that kind of gets overshadowed sometimes when talking about the Lions, but they want to run the football. They have 152 rushing attempts this year, second most of any team in the NFL. And they split them right down the middle between David Montgomery and Jir Gibbs. Those two are averaging 4.8 8 yards per carry combined. The Lions are the only team in the NFL with multiple 300 yard rushers this year. We got to got to stop both of them. How do we slow these guys down here tonight on the ground? Well, you have to understand and they’re two different guys. Montgomery although so talented. Uh and let me this this is perspective here too and the fact that and and Jonathan Taylor’s been awesome, right? Leads the league and had played today. But if you put these two guys together coming into this week, notwithstanding what happened today earlier, they’ve combined for 635 yards rushing. That’s 155 more than Jonathan Taylor. Wow. So, if you put those two headed monster together to one, it’s nobody’s close in the league to these guys, even the elite running backs. Now, you have to be very, very, very conscious of your assignment. I know I sound like spags here. This is very cliche, but you can’t sometimes do it. you have to do it all the time. And this is a team now that if you get too excited about getting a one gap opportunity that they’ll run by you. Um then you got to handle double teams. You’ve got everybody’s all hands on deck of handling doubles cuz their offensive line’s good and they can do a great job of doubling on a power or an inside run. And then you’ve got a great runner coming. Assignment sound being tough and then you got to be strong every time. You cannot take a snap off against these guys against the run ever. Yeah. Yeah, I’m expecting a bounceback performance from our defense tonight. I know they’re better than they performed last week. I think they’d be the first ones to say that. I’m also expecting our offense to keep pressure on the Detroit offense throughout this game. Forced them to go down there and score. And one player we’re relying on as part of that effort is Hollywood Brown. We had a chance to catch up with Hollywood on our podcast earlier this week. All right, got a chance to have Hollywood Brown on with us uh in this edition of Defending the Kingdom. And we talk about kind of role reversal here of taking on a really good team, a Detroit Lion team and going after them. But I got to ask you about being in the rhythm and the flow of the offense and what it means. 40 targets and 26 catches to get into a flow. What does that mean? Uh it’s very important. um felt like you know since I’ve been here uh you know battling injuries and uh you know devastated when I got hurt in training camp for me and um not even knowing if I’ll be able to play week one and just working like tirelessly to to try to make it back and then you know X goes down you know taking on even more and at the same time building myself up. Uh it’s been real it’s been a lot but it’s been real important that each week I feel like I’m getting better. Um Pat trusted me with more. My body is getting better and I feel like I’m playing faster and faster each week. So like for me it’s exciting. You got your first touchdown as a member of the Chiefs a couple weeks ago against the Ravens and really the last two weeks the offense seems to really been finding its stride. Nearly 500 yards of offense against the Jags last week. What’s been going right for you guys and how can you keep that going here moving forward? Uh I think it’s just you know uh the way we practice um the chemistry we’re building and uh guys eager to make plays. uh you know it’s only one football out there so when you get it you try to make a play with it. You trying to uh you know gain another opportunity and I feel like that’s why we mesh so well cuz we root for each other you know so so so bad. So it’s it’s a lot of fun. How much do you feel like and I’ve said this feel like you’re on the 4×100 meter relay team because you got Bashard you X I mean they keep coming. How fun is that that all putting all this speed on the field at the same time? Like it’s so fun. Uh it’s a great like work environment even like in practice. Uh the way we compete um the way we you know who can run the fastest this play or that play. Uh guys running with the ball you know who can run fast across the field to get a block. So it’s uh it’s something you know something special for sure. Didn’t even mention Taekquin. I know. Throw him Taekwon’s. Yeah. Right. I mean it’s cool to see his story because like nothing was guaranteed to him going into this season but he’s been great obviously for us. What’s impressed you about Taekquin this year? Oh man. I mean, I know about Taekquin since he was in high school. You know, he’s he’s from Florida just like me and all the adversity he done battled. Uh the things he done been through. Um you know, mentally, you know, I’m I’m so happy for him. I tell him all the time, you know, give God the glory. You know, give God the glory every single time cuz just to be here in this place is special. Uh and to see him make the most of his opportunity cuz, you know, he has a family. So, like, you know, I just smile when I see him uh every day cuz he he’s such a good person and his energy um we feed off of it a lot. That brings up an excellent point, though. You’ve been through a lot and you’ve been in this league a while. So, how much of a role do you have even off the field in talking to guys, even if it’s Brownley or anybody in that wide receiver room? I tell them all the time, um you know, my career, um I I never dealt with injuries like that in college. So, um, for me to get here, I questioned a lot of stuff a lot of times about, you know, why this or why me and why that. And then I got to a point where like, you know, well, God’s putting me down this path. He’s not going to give me something I can’t handle. Uh, so, you know, don’t worry about the outside noise. Maybe my story is meant to go through these things to come out uh with something better. So, I preach that to the guys that, you know, might not be happy in their situation, might not be happy about something, just to come to work every day. what stands out to you and how can we find some success against them? Uh, you know, high high power team. Um, they’re looking uh real good. I think for us, you know, we just got to focus on us. Um, uh, take it each play at a time. Uh, offense, defense, special teams. Uh, limit the penalties. Um, I had a bad penalty out there. So, just trying not to put oursel in the hole and just uh stay above the sticks and, you know, play Kansas City Chief football. And it’s good to have Kansas City Chiefs football and Hollywood in the house and in the flow. Yes, sir. All right. Great stuff there from Hollywood Brown. Uh we’re still waiting on the inactives here. We actually have the Lions inactives, so we’ll jump into those here in a moment. But for the Chiefs, uh no real surprises that we’re expecting anyway. We know Josh Simmons isn’t going to play. We talked about that a little bit already, but maybe a big opportunity for Jaylen Moore here tonight. Yeah, it’s only his 13th NFL start. Remember, he was he was a backup in San Francisco uh during his entire time there. He’s got some versatility. Uh it’s not like he has not played, but he hasn’t started. And he’s got, you know, the Lions will put Aiden Hutchinson and move him around, but you also have Elcadir Muhammad who’s got a bunch of sacks this year. He’s got three and a half sacks. The old Colt who’s hurt us in the past. So yeah, there’s a lot going on here, but uh hey, you got no choice, Jaylen. You got to step up and play the game of your life for us here, brother. So here’s our inactives, Mitch, down here. So uh Christian Fulton not going to play here tonight. Uh Christian practiced all week. Still haven’t seen him since early in that Eagles game, but Christian Fulton is inactive here tonight. Uh some good news though, Omar Norman Lot, who missed last week with that shoulder injury. Uh and probably could have used him and what he can do in the middle of the pocket. He’s active here tonight. So Omar Norman Lot active, Christian Fulton inactive. And Xavier Worthy had one day earlier this week where he didn’t practice, but he practiced on Friday, moved around. Well, Xavier Worthy is active as well. Yeah, an ankle’s just a little weird to swell up some, but that’s um and and the Norman Lot thing is really good because let’s go back to defend the run game. The Chiefs have good depth on the outside at defensive end. We know that they can play four guys for two slots. In the interior against this team, you have to play four guys for two slots. That means you just can’t run Chris Jones into the ground. Um, so Tiller is going to have to play and play well. Norman Lot’s going to have to play and play well. Derek Ignati is going to have to play and play well. So it’s about defensive rotation and keeping fresh bodies out there against these guys. Now with Detroit, a long injury list for them. Uh, the ones we were watching were safeties Brian Branch uh and Kirby Joseph. They were both questionable coming in. They’re both active tonight. Uh Joseph is an allp pro. Uh he led the NFL in interceptions last year with nine, already has three this season. Then Branch is a very good player. Uh his pick six against us back in 2023 and the opener was the difference in that game. So they’re both active like we talked about earlier. Uh starting corner Tion Arnold not going to play with a shoulder injury. Uh starting nickel Vonte Maddox not going to play with a hamstring injury. Um and also DJ Reid is one of their starting corners. He’s on injured reserve right now. Was placed on injured reserve last week. Then their offensive line, uh, starting left tackle Taylor Decker has a shoulder injury, not going to play. And his backup, uh, Giovani Manu was placed on injured reserve earlier this week. So, they have some major injury situations going on in their secondary and on their offensive line. And I don’t think they’ll move uh, Pane Su right to left. I just don’t think they will. He’s so good at right tackle. They might be right side centric with it. So, that means Dan Skipper is going to be at left tackle. All right. He hadn’t played a whole lot either. So, if the Chiefs have a challenge, and they do, not having Josh Simmons tonight, the Lions had that same challenge at the same spot. So, Jared Goff, who’s been great, 12 touchdown passes, leads the league. Only two interceptions. His completion percentage is ridiculous, but his backside also becomes a concern just like the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes are with both left tackles out tonight. And let’s close with this because that’s a good segue. Tough one last week. Uh we’ve seen the Chiefs win that game about 99 times out of a 100. Didn’t work out that way. Uh but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If there’s one word to describe this Chiefs team over the last 10 years, it’s resilient. It’s resiliency. A great opportunity to show some resiliency here tonight. And what better time to bounce back than on Sunday Night Football. For Mitch Hulus, I’m Matt McMullen. Thanks so much for watching everyone. Let’s go get a victory. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music]
