Both teams seem ready and they’re about to drop the puck in this opening face off. The Rangers start things off on the right note by winning the opening draw. There’s a shot. Denies the clever. Quick feed to McDavid. Takes the hit. He goes down to the ice and coughs up the P. puts it wide. I’m not sure what happened there. Well, it almost looks as if he was rushing the shot and then he lost control completely of that puck. Now, that was a grade A scoring opportunity. Huge one. Oh, it’s another consecutive save. What a great job of tracking the puck. Not one, but two consecutive saves. And the puck leaves the offensive zone. They’ll be forced to tag up. Oh, he hit him and got all of it. Oh, and that’s a tough one, James. You’re along the board. They don’t have a lot of give. What that means, you’re feeling it all. Edmonton’s got it in the offensive zone. Puts it on there and will play on as that gets a piece of the glove. Perkins tracking the puck extremely well right now. Just have a look at that last save to be able to get in front of that puck to be able to keep it out of the net. Outstanding performance by him on that last one. [Applause] Still plenty of time left in this frame. Still looking for our first goal. Back underway as he wins the draw inside the offensive zone. Shurkens going to hang on to the puck for a whistle. Miller’s won the draw deep in the defensive zone. Oh, big time hit along the wall. And this is why I’m glad I’m up here in the suit. And I’m right there with you, James. I wouldn’t want to be along those guards either. Almost looked like he left his feet early, but nonetheless, it’s a bone crusher. Miller’s moving the puck through his own zone. They’ve got some momentum here. Here’s a chance. Oh, great shot block there. Well, yeah. I mean, it’s great a scoring chance and you want to make sure that you get in front of that one. And he did. He gets all of it. And uses the length of his stick to knock that puck away. Back to the point it goes. Uh-huh. Nice block. Puck scooped up by Nurse. And that’s a great head stop playing in the offensive zone. Moves it up. Fast and quick lead pass. Save by the goalie. Skinner made a great save on that last play, taking away a high danger chance because of his ability to anticipate and know where the shooter’s coming from. [Applause] [Applause] Carson’s won a big draw in their own end and he handles the cross ice pass. Here they come on the attack. The Rangers play it along the boards. The Oilers have it against the wall. Handles the pass. Shot attempt completely fails on that from the left side. He moves it up ahead. That’s glove by Skinner. They got a whistle penalty coming up. The Rangers will now be under man with a crosschecking penalty. Well, this is such an obvious call for the official undisiplined. Once the arms extend, you’re going to get the cross-checking call. Edmonton’s man advantage unit will take to the ice for the first time tonight. Well, there’s no better way to break the ice than to put it in the net on the power play on your first opportunity. Wouldn’t it be nice to get the first goal of the game on the PP? And they’ll get it out of the defensive end. The Oilers get a hold of the puck along the boards. Over the line they come. Sends the pass down low. Oh, a clutch save and he loses control here. Nice zone entry on the left side. Quick shot and makes the save. to Cirin’s last save has to give this team some momentum. I mean, that’s a point blank chance that he’s able to take away. Just very aggressive and assertive in his crease. [Applause] Miller’s ready for the draw as they continue to be short-handed here. The Rangers win the draw. Now, let’s see what they can do with it. Anytime you take someone’s feet out from under them, you’re going to head to the box for two. Now, Edmonton salivating with a five on three power play. Five on three. So much ice available. You can’t overthink it, but you have to have the ability to move the puck. Know which side you want to be on. All side offside for the one-time drive to the net. Shurk has opted to hang on to the puck for a face off. So ready for the draw as they will continue to try to kill off this penalty. He overs the face off and a great save. Oh wow. Gabberov’s penalty has expired, but they remain short hit and they score on the power play. They make it happen. Let’s have another look at this, James. Yeah, there it is. I mean, look at that net front presence. Just the screen and the goalender battling to find the puck. That’s exactly what you need in the paint on a power play. And as a result, they score. [Applause] The Oilers finally break the ice and get the game’s first goal. Yeah, and it’s an important one, James, because there’s not much room out there and not much separating these two teams. So, that little bit of a cushion may give them the stir, the press they need to be more consistent and try and get another one on the board. New York’s got the puck at center looking to make something happen in the offensive zone. Quick pass across to that shot gets caught in traffic and skilled using a stick to put the puck away. Pass across Miller. The Oilers get position in the neutral zone. Whistle blows, stopping the play. You’re going to take a penalty, you might as well take your opponent with you as they both march to the box. [Applause] Well, things open up for both sides a little bit here with some fouron four action. Four on four can be pretty confusing when it comes to coverage. Shakes off the defender with some nifty moves. Dishes it off. Oh, just a great heads up play by TK. New York’s been excellent tonight, James. They found ways to work hard on and off of the puck. And when they’re away from it, they’ve really done a great job of being in good position to be able to take away lanes and angles, seams, you name it. But it has to translate to something. This is still a close game. Sturken’s got the puck and he’s going to hang on. Miller’s won it off the face off. Sends it over to Sabinad. A little dipsy doodle and he loses possession of the puck. Unfortunately, it trickles in. He’s not going to like it. He’ll want that one back. The Oilers have extended the lead to two. And boy, I really like their game tonight. Yeah, they’ve had the puck. And when you have the puck, it’s certainly a lot easier there to generate opportunities, but it’s their play away from the puck supporting it, which is a reason why they’re being able to maintain it. Puck grabbed by McDavid. Makes a move in front. Scores. The captain comes through. [Applause] I love this goal because this is a combination of quickness and explosiveness here. Oh, they telegraphed the pass and he picks it off. Toss it up on the play. Moves inside. He scores. Leon Leon tricidle makes it count. Well, instinctually he knows that he needs to elevate this puck based on the goalender’s positioning here, James. And he gets it up in a hurry on the back end and just fools the goalender. The Oilers have been moving and grooving all night long. And we’re only in the second period here, pounder. Well, they’re finding a way to get the puck and that’s because they’re retrieving it. But when they get it, they’re keeping it. They’re not letting anyone have it. And the motion in the offensive zone has been incredible. And the score is a result. makes it look easy with McDavid’s having himself a multi-point night. And these are the types of nights that you dream about and and I’m continuing to dream because I never had multi-point nights. And there’s the whistle. Icing the call. [Applause] Well, this is a big hit here and I don’t think the other team likes it because it’s a product of frustration. They’re trailing in the game by quite a margin and really just not maintaining the emotions or the control within the game. And as a product, this is hit as a result. The Oilers lead in a big way here in this second. They have been on fire offensively. Moves it quickly over to Wal. Good fight for the puck along the boards. Big time stop there. That’s a fantastic sequence of saves there, James. He was so dialed in. He tracked it perfectly. Scores back here. I guess it’s something to look at positive for James. I mean certainly is going to feel happy that they contributed but they’re going to have to find a way to dig theirelves out of this hole and it’s a large one at that to put their work boots on and try and kick it into high gear if they even want an opportunity to claw their way back in this game. Well, that quick glove hand looks like a windmill, James. I think that was meant for the highlight reel. Unfortunately, got to catch the puck if you want to make it there. The Rangers finally show some life here, but it’s still too much to not enough at this point. Yeah, they’ve been out battled, they’ve been outscored, and they’ve just been outplayed this whole game, but they’ve got to use that goal as a positive reset and just look forward. And he avoids the Pope check with some great edge work. Denied by the Goender. And now he moves it quickly to Mecca. What a steal in his own end. Gets the puck in deep. As we look at this last save, this looks uncomfortable. stretching your body, finding a way to make yourself as big as possible to get to the save. You know that these guys are constantly working in small space areas working on their games, working on their legs. Their foundation, the lower half is so critical. And this is a perfect example with the stop. Quick feed to Susi and that’s offside stopping the play. The Oilers have to be feeling good about themselves here in the late stages of this second period as they continue to lead big. Henrik’s gain possession inside the neutral zone. Here’s a chance. 44 seconds left and down he goes as the puck goes free. 39 seconds left. Picked off by Nan Hopkins. As an athlete, you always want to try and contribute and get things going for your team and especially when you’re trailing, you want to ignite a spark. Unfortunately though, they heed a little too much there and it gets taken away. Edmonton’s got it along the wall. The Rangers have it now. finds nothing but air on that shot. Pass back to the point. Oh, and he completely missed the shot. They go on the attack through center. He’s got a step in seconds and he makes the save.
