We know essentially what everybody’s role is going to be. We know the starting lineup. Paulo Ben Carro, Fran Vager, Wendo Carter, Jaylen Suggs, Desmond Bane. We know mostly who the bench players are depending on if the Magic go to a nine or 10 man rotation. Tus Jones, Anthony Black, Tristan Dilva, Jonathan Isaac, and then go give a Todd until Mo Vagner comes back and then maybe then we’ll have a training camp out. Jace Richardson, who’s been really impressive in preseason by the way, Noah Penda, Jed Howard, uh, and those three players are capable, but likely out of the rotation. And so we don’t have this situation where we got like a training camp battle like I can’t say, oh, these two players are competing for playing time and obviously something that will continue. Now, we are going to talk about Jet Howard. I want to mention him. I want to talk a little about Jonathan Isaac and how he’s played. There is some intrigue, but for the most part, I think the Magic enter training and then of course like Jace Richardson’s played really well, but the question is where do you fit him in? And certainly once the Magic are healthy, where do you fit him in? The fact of the matter is the Magic have been able to approach this training camp and approach this preseason really knowing what their roles are. As much as Jamal Mosley is right to experiment with some different rotations in some lineups. And again, we’ll talk about Jed Howard here in a minute because he’s played very, very well, there’s not a lot of intrigue. Like, it’s fine to test some lineups here and there, but we know what that opening night rotation’s going to be. And and really, we’re all just counting down the days until October 22nd. t-minus eight days till the start of the regular season and that’s when we’re really going to learn something about this team. Now, these preseason games have been helpful. We’re we’re seeing the the Magics uh increase in pace, their int, you know, their their increase in intensity. We’re we’re seeing them take these steps, but it’s also very very clear that a they’re not operating at kind of full force yet. They’re not kind of at full speed yet. And B, we could clearly see that, okay, we’re looking, we’re not looking at a team that’s regular season at regular season intensity. And maybe that changes Thursday. Maybe Thursday, I’ve joked about this with a few people already, like maybe Thursday, the Magic are going to come out and just say we’re just going to really come in, come out locked in, regular season intensity, and just show everyone like, “Oh, no, no, no. We’re we’re here. We’re not holding anything in reserve. This is who we are.” It feels like the Magic are holding something in reserve and that’s fine. The players that are doing that are players that can afford to do that. Paulo Vancero through two preseason games, I don’t care that he’s scoring 10 points per game and shooting 31.6% and 0 for five from three. Do not care. France Vagner 12 and a half points per game, 38 and a half percent from the floor, one for five from three. Don’t or don’t care. honestly do not care. Uh even like Taius Jones, like Tyus Jones has averaged the fewest points per game on the Magic at 2.7 per game in three games. That’s what eight points. He’s shooting three for 11. I’m having to do math in my head, so I apologize. Um he’s shooting three for 11 and two for I’m blanking on math again. Two for seven on threes. He’s got 1.3 turnovers per game. That’s four turnovers. That’s a lot for him. Two of them came in one game. I’m not concerned. I’m not worried about any of these guys. Their spots are safe. Now, like Tus Jones, like yeah, like the defense might be a little concerning. The Magic still got to figure out the right ways. And I wouldn’t put it past to say like if the Magic come out of the gate struggling on defense and Taius isn’t scoring like he’s scoring now or he’s just not getting the ball enough and again like I I he knows how to get himself ready for the regular season. So I don’t think this is going to be the case but yeah maybe that’s when we’ll get some lineup intrigue. Maybe the Magic will say like okay this isn’t working. Let’s just lean into it. Desmond Bane’s our quote unquote point guard. Um, you know, maybe Jayce starts. Who knows? I don’t think they do that because Jayce has the same defensive problems that Taius does, but who knows? But I’m not worried about I don’t think we’re at that level. I don’t think we’re anywhere near that consideration. Really, the only like lineup statement that has been made in this preseason is Wendell Carter very clearly establishing himself as the starting center. I knew people and and we talked about this even on lockdown fantasy basketball when I did my Magic preview with Josh. I knew people who said Wendell Carter it, you know, if he doesn’t play well, go go should start. And I was like, no, Wendell’s a starter. He’s much more consistent on defense. Offense is what he is. Like he’s he’s the guy. The fact that Wendell Carter has come out in this preseason in three games averaging 14 points per game, shooting 65.2% from the floor. He’s shooting three for uh again doing math three for five on threes. The magic at 7.3 rebounds per game again in three games 15.9 minutes per game. Wendell Carter, if anyone has made a statement this preseason, it’s Wendell Carter saying, “Do not come for my starting center spot. I am the best and most consistent defender among the centers and I can deliver something on offense.” And certainly health has been a big factor for that. He has looked much more athletic, much more spry, much more energized. And again, not that I think there was ever debate, but he’s everyone’s kind of shut up about that debate. It’s it’s done. It’s over. And so, frankly, there’s not a lot to say. There’s not a lot to further explore um as far as there’s not a lot to further explore as far as what the Magic are sorting through and figuring out with their roster. Again, we know we know who’s playing where and who’s doing what. That’s not changing. The question is to which degree can other players put pressure and demand playing time. And you know, we could talk a little about Jace and maybe we should. Jace Richardson has been excellent this preseason. He is scoring well. Obviously, he’s second on the team in scoring in the preseason or third in this team on scoring in preseason with 11.7 points per game. He’s shooting 46.2% from Florida. He’s in three games. He has uh he’s seven for I’m doing math in my head again. Seven for 10 from three. Really encouraging. He’s getting the line 1.7 times per game and I think that’s a big piece of the puzzle. But, you know, look, he’s a rookie. He’s small. He’s going to push for playing time and maybe he pushes Tus out. You know, Tyus is on an expiring deal. Won’t be difficult to trade if it comes to it. Um, especially if the Magic are willing to take on some extra salary, which maybe they are, maybe they aren’t. Um, but Jace Jace is gonna Jace has probably been the only player that’s not currently in the rotation that’s making you really say like we got to find minutes for him. We got to find some time for him. And obviously like maybe it’s Jason’s emergence that’s making the Magic feel a little bit more comfortable about being more patient with Jaylen Suggs. They don’t need to rush Jaylen Suggs back. Again, we’re going to find out next week about all these questions. Ultimately, these preseason games tell us a little bit. They don’t tell us everything. And we’re not gonna really know for sure about much much on this team until the games count for real on Wednesday. But there’s still a lot to sort through. There’s still a lot to figure out. There’s still a lot to decipher. And I think one of the things and maybe the only camp battle we have is who’s going to get the number 10 spot. The reason why that is up for grabs, not because Tristan Dilva is playing better than expected. He’s playing exactly how we expected after a zero basket. It’s because Jet Howard has started to play really well. So much so, he is getting looks where he wasn’t getting looks before. So, let’s talk about how Jet Howard has shined in the preseason. We’re going to get to that coming up here in just a moment. But first, today’s episode of Lockdown Magic is brought to our friends over at FanDuel. I I don’t think I’m saying anything crazy there. Like if the Magic are healthy, we know the nine or 10 guys are going to play. If anything, like the two things that have happened this preseason are Tristan Dilva clearly established himself as a rotation player. He has to play. Um and so maybe that makes it a 10-man rotation. Maybe that makes it a nineman rotation. He pumps Jonathan Isaac out. There’s not a lot of room for young guys who are kind of in the inroup, but the thing about training camp is you get the chance to play for him. Now, we talked about this last week. We asked Fran Hoger what camp was like, who’s impressed him? And Fron brought up Jet Howard. Fron said Jet Howard has had a really good offseason. When impressed him a little bit more, he said, “No, Jet Jet really came back improved and a better player.” After two years of struggling to get off the bench, two years struggling to just make an impact. Last year, even with all the injuries, struggling to get in the rotation, Trevalin Queen was playing ahead of him, and a lot of it had to do with his energy and his defense. We all know Jed Howard should be a shooter and he’s struggled as a shooter early on in his career and that’s been part of why he hasn’t played two. But the big thing for the Magic is um the big fa thing for the Magic is and remains uh remains can Jeda Howard defend because if you can’t defend, if you’re not competitive on that end, you’re not going to play. And so you do that plus you struggle to shoot when that’s supposed to be your NBA skill. you fall out of the rotation. You don’t even get a chance at the rotation at that point. But this has been a really strong preseason for Jet. Before we get to the shooting numbers, before we get to the stats, let’s just talk about the effort Jet has put on the defensive end. From that first game against the Heat in Puerto Rico, Jet was diving on the floor getting loose balls. He was fighting and scrapping for possessions. Now, there’s a possession there where he got the ball, got hot potatoed it, lost it, and had to fight for jump ball. But he didn’t give up on the possession. I It’s not a win, but I’m not counting it as a loss. That’s a good That’s what I want to see. Too often, I think Jet would get down on himself for missing a shot, would get down on himself for missing a defensive rotation, would be scared because a quick hook. That’s not happening right now during these preseason games. Jet has been a difference maker. Not a differencemaker, but he’s been solid enough on defense that you want to give him a longer look. And credit to Javal Mosley for whatever these things are worth. Jed Howard has been the first guy off the bench the last two nights. We all know France Vagner comes out first and the Magic are kind of toying around with rotation ideas with Jaylen Suggs potentially missing some time. Um certainly with Mo Vagner out, you know, they they they’re trying to figure out the playing groups, who they want off the bench, who they want in the strong lineup. And look, we haven’t seen this team at full force very much. There hasn’t a lot of Palo Dez uh fron lineups, but even then on Friday’s game against Philadelphia when we had those three players, Jet was the first guy off the bench. And at that point, it felt like an experiment given Jonathan Isaac maybe the night off. We’ll talk a little about him in a minute. Um but it was a huge huge huge moment for Jet and he played well with it. He took advantage of it. In three preseason games, again preseason, Jet Howard scored 30 points. He has shot, again, I’m doing math here off the off the top of my head, 10 for 20 once, slightly below 500. And and he is shooting seven for 14 from three. Again, he shot well in last year’s preseason, too, so we don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves, but if the shot is back, and he’s been a very consistent three-point shooter, even in the first half with the starters, um he’s been reliable on that end, and he’s been confident on that end. If the shot is back and Jet can give you a little bit of something on defense, then you’ve got a player. The way I would describe it is Jet has gone from don’t play except and break glass in case of emergency situations. I like if entering this camp, I would have said Jet Howard like I’m only playing him if I have to be perfectly honest. And and and I like Jet as a person. I I I want him to go someplace where he can make mistakes. I I don’t think the Magic are good spot for him right now because the pressure’s just ramped up so high. And unless he’s making shots, which he hasn’t in his two years in Orlando so far in the NBA at least, um it it’s hard. And this isn’t like a JJ Reic situation where he’s he’s performing and not playing. JJ Reick shot 40% from three in those early years when Brian Hill wasn’t playing him. He clearly had an NBA skill and Brian Hill just didn’t trust his defense. Again, credit to statement Gundy. statement Gundy figured out a way to make JJ Reic get J.J. Reic not only to buy in on defense but be effective on defense um and then took advantage of his strong three-point shooting. This is not that situation. Jed is struggling on defense struggle on defense his first two years and struggled to shoot. And so you had to ask yourself, well, what does Jet Howard do at an NBA level? And that’s harsh. I’m I’m sitting here saying it’s a harsh thing to ask a kid, a young player, but for a Magic team that’s contending and trying to win games, that’s a necessary question you have to ask. And so now we got to see, okay, Jets making threes, that’s great. That’s a good thing. Um, and now he is defending at a higher level. So he’s gone from break glass in case of emergency or only play in case of emergency to I’m kind of curious to just throw him in there occasionally. You know, I’m not going to be upset if he gets spot minutes. If there’s a matchup dependent, if the Magic needs some shooting, they throw him in there for a few minutes. Um, I think that’s a hu again, that’s not a ringing endorsement. I’m not sitting here saying put Jet in a rotation immediately. Like, we have two years of data that say say he he’s plays differently, but he’s a young player. He’s supposed to get better. Has he taken a huge enough leap that he should be in the rotation? Like, we don’t know. We honestly don’t know. I think it’s worth giving him an opportunity at some point. Um, you know, again, a game, you know, you you just you select a game, this is the game we’re going to give him a chance and give him a shot. And it’s unfair to do it in one game and that’s it. Um, but Jets played well enough and and and shown enough in this preseason to at least make you think and and you know, it’s it’s fair enough to say Jet has gotten better. You expect young players to get better. He has gotten better. The question is, is it good enough for what the Magic are trying to accomplish? And that is a fair question to ask at this point. But Jed Howard has had a really strong preseason. He’s played well in these games. By all accounts, he’s done well in camp. And there’s at least a few hints that Jed could be a surprise member of the rotation when camp when the season begins. And that leads to another maybe uncomfortable question. Where does Jonathan Isaac fit? We’ll talk about Jonathan Isaac, the role the Magic are hoping for him to play and what he’s shown us this preseason. We’ll get to that coming up here in just a moment. The Pelaton Crossraining Tread Plus today at oneplaton.com. It was not entirely surprising that the Magic would give Jonathan Isaac a quote unquote night off. The veterans each try to get a night off in the preseason. The Magic kind of spread him out. They don’t do them all at once. Um I imagine Thursday everybody will play at least the first quarter, maybe not the second, but I think we’ll see that main trio play in the first quarter at the very least. But it’s not surprising that Jonathan Isaac, one of the long the longest tenure player on the team and one of the older players on the team now, would get a night off. And so Friday night, it was raised my eyebrows a little bit that Jet Howard was the first guy off the bench and played instead of Jonathan Isaac. But that’s not what was interesting. What’s interesting is that Jonathan Isaac did not get the night off. He came in in the fourth quarter, came in late in the third quarter, I believe, to play his first minutes of the game. that suggests that there is maybe a little bit of intrigue in the rotation that the Magic are considering switching up the rotation or in certain Jed that rotation over a player like Jonathan Isaac and so it it raises I I don’t think this is going to be the case. I think Ji’s going to play um because I think Ji’s still a better more reliable defensive player and the Magic have enough offense to cover for him. But it does raise this question, where does Ji fit this season? What is he going to bring to this team? Now, through these three preseason games, the Magic have done what we expect them to do. He’s played backup forward backup power forward. He comes in for Paulo. Uh, you know, he’s defending really, really well. Like, he’s he lost the weight. He’s reportedly down to 230. He’s listed at 230 now. He was 250 last year. He’s moving around a lot more quickly with a lot more energy. the shot blocking’s back. You know, is he ratcheted up all the way to 10 with his defense? Probably not. But even a seven is a really devastating defender. Johnson Isaac on the preseason has, let’s just check, do a quick stock check. Um, he has two block uh two blocks so far. So, not doing a bunch of stocks, but I would say he has played very very well defensively. The question with Jonathan Isaac has and will remain and will remain whether he can provide anything on offense and that is still a work in progress. Jonathan Isaac so far has averaged only 4.3 points. So in three games that is 13 points. He is shooting one for nine. It’s 11% 0 for four from three. He’s doing a lot of his work at the fell line. He has nearly he has uh five offensive rebounds in two games uh in three games, excuse me, and six defensive rebounds. So, he’s been a little bit of a presence on the glass, but not not anything huge. It’s it’s been it’s been nice to see him moving around and nice to see him playing so actively, but we’re not necessarily seeing the impact. And at the end of the day, like one of the issues with Jonathan Isaac has always been, can his defense make up for the drain he becomes on offense? He is still just not a reliable offensive player. Um, he is not shooting the ball well from the outside. And the question now is, is he big and strong enough to battle on the glass and and and connect around the rim? And that jury is still out a little bit, I think, because yes, he is battling on the glass and getting to the foul line, but not finishing like super strong. So, again, there’s just so there’s just a question of like, well, what does Jonathan Isaac do? Same question you would ask Chad Howard. What does he do? Well, he does defend at an NBA level, at an elite NBA level, and that is why you go with him and why you stick with him a little bit. But very very quickly, players who can’t contribute on both ends are going to fall out of favor. And the Magic are going to have to make decisions on what actually gives us the best chance to win. I would still argue that’s Jonathan Isaac. Like, does that mean he’s long for this team? Does that mean that the Magic have to address these issues? No, absolutely not. But Jonathan Isaac has continued to show his versatility. The Magic are trying him out as a center in a lot of lineups. He’s playing as sort of the third string center on a lot of these lineups before Orlando Robinson, which I understand. They’re testing it out. And look, he’s holding his zone. He’s not like getting blown away or anything, but finishing through contact, finishing around the rim, still a little bit of a challenge for him. And there’s just not a lot he’s doing offensively other than being a spot-up shooter and an offensive rebound crasher. And he’s not particularly good at either. um he’s he’s better as a crasher and around the paint, but it it’s not perfect. It’s not ideal. And so, you know, there are a lot of players under a lot of pressure for this Magic team. Let’s let’s let’s make no bones about that. There are a lot of players under a lot of pressure. Uh you know, Anthony Black heading into an extension summer. He has to show that he can, you know, what he is. is to show us who he is as a player and how he can contribute to a championship team. Johnson Isaac on his perpetually like non-g guaranteed contract has to show that you know last year was a fluke and that he can still make that impact being healthy. The Magic put a lot of money that it’s been some cost fallacy in him but they believe in him. They’re not giving up on a player with an elite skill until they absolutely have to. Well, we’re getting pretty close to absolutely having to. just trying to see if there is someone out there that will take him. And there might be because again, he’s an elite defender. You don’t want to give that up so freely, but you might not have a choice. Jonathan Isaac could e Jonathan Isaac Black could easily be second apron um casualties. Chad Howard is in the same boat. What does he do at an NBA level? What is he going to show us this year when he gets his opportunity? Is he gonna become so undeniable, which I don’t think he has, although he has done enough to make me more comfortable playing him in the rotation, hasn’t done enough to be so undeniable that you can’t play him, that you have to play it. Tristan Silva’s become that. J Richardson might be getting there and making other players expendable. But these are the kind of decisions you have to make when you’re a tax team and when you’re over going to be on the second April like the Magic will be next year. We got to find out where Ji fits just plain and simple. And I’m not sure any of us know the answer to that because there’s still a lot of work to do. Having said that, he’s a veteran. It’s the preseason. We don’t, you know, everybody is gearing up for next Wednesday. Thursday is a checkpoint. Thursday’s a stepping stone. Thursday is part of the process, but nobody’s freaking out about anything because on this team, virtually everyone knows their role. That’s going to do it for me today, though. We’ll get to that on tomorrow’s episode of Locked On Magic. But until then, for Orlando Magic Daily and Locked on Magic, this has been Philip Rosen. See you again next time for another episode of Locked On Magic.

There is not much intrigue in training camp over roles and rotation. The Orlando Magic know who their nine- or 10-man rotation should be this season when they are healthy. The preseason has been more about establishing and clarifying those existing roles ahead of the season.

There is still something to prove, however.

Jett Howard has made the most of his minutes, getting some extended time with the starters and rotation players and showing signs of defensive improvement to get him a look. Jonathan Isaac is also looking healthy and more active on defense. But he still faces a lot of questions about his offensive potential.

  1. Please trade JI…he’s in his 8th or 9th season and he’s “still developing on offense”

He is a good defensive player, but I’m tired of waiting for him to be more. Lets get as much as we can for him now and cut the cord

  2. It’s one thing to say JI is a bad player but You’re clearly a hater for saying he’s a terrible person! Get off the comment section if you’re bringing this level of hate…
