Now do one for free agency lol. He’s drafted very well, but there are completely valid reasons to be pissed about his tenure.
And people wanted Stevie to be fired…
Pretty night and day between the two outside of Larkin. Mantha was a solid result too. Obviously didn’t end up in Detroit and goofy career afterwards, but they at least got solid value out of him. (Multiple NHL contributing seasons and then a trade return that exceeded his original draft spot.
I am way closer to a yzerman truther than a hater but I imagine the argument isn’t about his drafting or in comparison to Holland … The number of people who genuinely argue we should have kept Holland has to be single digits.. I assume the critique is more on FA and lack of ability to get top nhl ready talent (outside the draft picks)
Before revisionism completely takes over.
Svech didn’t look to be a bad pick at that spot but was derailed with injuries.
Cholowski looked like he could be a dude but his development just faltered hard.
Ras was a reach no two ways about that.
Zadina felt like an amazing win, fell too Detroit from consensus 3OA. Obviously we know now how it turned out.
Yzermans drafting has been worlds better without a doubt, and the misses of the late Holland era really hurt the team. But it’s not like Holland was bad for the sake of bad on some of these choices.
Should’ve been better though.
Maaaaan I was so excited for Zedina.
The latter part of the Ken Holland era was a gong show in so many ways. The drafting may have been the worst aspect of it. Set the team back light years. Yzerman actually inherited a pile of rubble while Kenny went swanning off trying and failing to build a champion in Edmonton, where he already had two franchise players on the roster. And he still effed up with some stupid moves, like the Nurse deal and not acquiring a legit goaltender.
It’s like baseball, it takes longer to see prospects develop. He’s doing pretty well
He’s good at drafting and terrible at free agent signings .
I’ll keep Moose thank you.
Yzerman in 2019: Championships are won through the draft. I will build through the draft, and it will take a lot of time. We need lots of picks, we need to draft well, and we need to develop those players. I need you to be patient. This is going to take time.
Yzerman in 2025: DELIVERS!
I’m fucking hype right now. Lots of Yzerplan deniers over the years, and I get it, it sucks to see your team in the fucking basement year after year. But, Yzerman set expectations the moment he was signed on as the GM: this is going to take a lot of time.
Well, it’s taken 5 years, and here we are. I feel pretty good about our progress and the promises Yzerman made.
Mo and Raymond are elite and borderline stars, Ed is trending towards elite, ASP might have the highest offensive ceiling of any young defenseman, MBN is looking like an absolutely fantastic pick, Finnie skating his way onto the first line from the 7th round (sheesh), AlJo looks like a god damn professional, Kasper is centering a very productive line… Things are looking good.
We need the goalies to hit, but that is like all we are missing. On top of this, 10+ million in cap space on a team that is looking playoff bound as is, is awesome.
Some wonderful 1st round picks from Steve and team. There’s not many still arguing those. Really, tho, with what he did in TB (and to a lesser extent our team draft history), expectation was that there would be deeper draft finds. I personally think that was the measuring stick here. With what we’ve seen from Finnie, that could quell those naysayers, perhaps. Still would be nice to find solid success in the 2nd+ rounds. Maybe Lombardi or Buch makes it. Or Buium to finally close this argument down for good.
Great draft picks, but I think he has made some mistakes. Letting Gostisbehere walk in lieu of Gustafsson, Holl and Chiarot. The signings of Copp and Compher are going to age even more poorly than they have already. Also, the Walman trade was terrible asset management.
All that said, we are on the right path, and he should get credit for the team friendly extensions of Seider, Raymond, Larkin and Debrincat.
Nobody is questioning his drafting abilities, but even his biggest fans cannot deny how bad he has performed in free agency.
Holland did draft some talent in early 2000s for sure. But brutal 2010s.
Anyone who doesn’t appreciate Yzerman and all he’s done for this city since he was 18 YEARS OLD can find the door on their own. I don’t even want to show it to them. Stop calling yourself a fan and don’t bother celebrating any victories from here on out. You haven’t earned it.
I commented on a THG video where he basically predicted Montreal and Ottawa to further pass Detroit and said that Yzerman should be on the hot seat if they don’t make the playoffs. He responded and basically doubled down on that opinion. People don’t seem to understand that the Red Wings rebuild was not comparable to their rebuilds. I think Yzerman has done a good job so far. His mistakes or bad signings are ultimately going to be inconsequential. He’s done the very hardest thing you can do while rebuilding – resist pressure to gamble it and rush, commit to building a real contender from the draft. Still more to be seen but I think it’s going well so far.
There is a saying in German: Ich habe mich bereits entschieden, bitte verwirren sie mich nicht mit fakten.
It translates to “I have already made up my mind, please do not confuse me with facts.” You can show all the receipts you want, people that are that entrenched in hating Yzerman don’t care, they just want him gone because they can’t stand to publicly admit they have been in the wrong
Is there anyone who doesn’t think Yzerman has drafted well?
Also I think these really aren’t fair comparisons, outside of Zadina, there are no high picks, and most of Yzerman’s picks are still TBD on their outcomes. Seider is really the only “good” pick here as he was unexpected, Raymond was the obvious choice at 4, the rest are unproven.
Almost all of the heat that Yzerman has is because of FA and trades, which let’s be honest, has been abysmal. I really want Yzerman to be successful but let’s not start hanging the mission accomplished banner until the team at least makes the playoffs.
Can we make the playoffs and have some success before we annoint Yzerman as a GM? I love all of the draft picks he has made and I’m not going to argue Holland vs. Yzerman. I’m just saying Yzerman still hasn’t accomplished anything as a GM and we’re not at a point where we can say suck it h8ers!
The draft position is kind of night and day.
I wish I could snort a picture

I put people who have wanted Yzerman fired in the same box as people that write Holland off as a has been that was terrible at drafting. Both groups have no idea how to look at anything with nuance.
This also goes for people that feel the need to defend Yzerman by throwing Holland under the bus.
20 years straight of being one of the best teams in the league is going to empty the cupboard. Once that empty cupboard needs to be the primary driver for success, you’re in for a lengthy rebuild. It’s pretty simple.
Damn I didnt remember Ras being 9th. Ouch
Its pretty pathetic that you people think Yzerman being better than Holland at drafting is a flex.
Yzerman is a great GM and anyone who says otherwise is not looking at Detroit closely or has bad memory. Yzerman was a huge part of Tampa’s success. I mean he left and they won back to back cups with the team that he built. HOWEVER, Detroit’s pro-scouting needs to be addressed. Yes their amateur scouting is phenomenal but you can’t create a successful dynasty through the draft alone. I don’t think he should be fired just as they are turning things around. As much as I want the Red Wings in the playoffs, I want them to be a successful team for a long time and that can’t happen without the careful reconstruction that Yzerman and his team are conducting. Give the guy some time.
How about don’t victory lap after 5 games? 2 years ago we had like an 8 point cushion in January and missed the playoffs
