Collin Gillespie Phoenix Suns Practice Media Availability | 10-17-25
Oh, what’s up everyone? Kind of been uh sniffing around trying to figure out who this Dylan Jr. is and I believe it might be you. Is that fair to say? I don’t know. You don’t know? Yeah, man. I don’t know. Okay. We’ll probably get confirmation from Dylan you. So, we go ahead and roll with you saying you don’t know right now. Yeah. But but as far as having that identity or being the person that’s known for being a Martin guy, how do how how are you even looking at that? I mean, I think we got a lot of guys that are like that. Um, a lot of guys that are hungry, competitive, uh, want to win and will do anything to win. So, I think we got a lot of guys that are similar in that sense, but I think Dylan um being known as that guy around the league that uh is tough, physical, no nonsense type of type of stuff like he won’t take anything. Um kind of can project that to the rest of the team and he sets the tone, brings the energy and I think once other guys see it, they need to feed off that energy. How much when did how have you noticed him establish what you just articulated as far as in practice that whole that whole identity thing? He got two texts and a pickup game in the middle of the summer. So, uh yeah, I mean he’s nuts, but uh it’s like I think I talked to a bunch of people about it. Like there’s a guy that you hate to play against and love when he’s on your team. And if you don’t know him, you probably think he’s crazy and but he’s super chill off the court and then once he’s in between the lines, it’s like he has that villain thing that he he’s got going and like it’s like a switch inside his head and he’s like a different person. Colin, Grayson, you talked to us about sort of people not going back to old ways from last season and embracing, you know, what coach has brought. Um, how would you sort of assess the adaptability from this roster top to bottom so far? Yeah, I mean I think a lot of guys are adjusting really well. Um it’s a new newer roster. Uh younger uh a lot of energy. Uh I think I heard G talking about the competitiveness from before training camp. We had a lot of guys here in the summertime playing pickup and want to be in the gym working out. Um and then it’s just carried over ever since coach has been here having guys in the gym. uh being able to get up and down against each other, create an identity for ourselves, for our team and and kind of setting a standard for ourselves. So, yeah, I don’t think anybody nobody likes to lose and uh I think a lot of the guys from here didn’t come from losing programs in college. So, nobody likes to lose and try to try to get back to to winning ways, winning habits and kind of keep that and and build the culture around that. Did you know much about Jordan before Jordan Knaut before he got here? No, I didn’t. um not until he was hired, but I knew he was uh with the Cavs last year. And obviously being a part of it now, you could see kind of how they played last year. Um like just watching clips from their games last year, the cut and slide stuff, defensive principles. Um so you could see how successful it was there last year. And um they did a lot of stuff offensively that was really unique with guard guard stuff. uh playing two big lineups. Um so it was obviously you could tell the success they had and it worked well. So um we’d be fools not to listen to him. Did you do when he was hired? Did you do research on him or did you ask around about him at all or before you got back? Not of him. No. Um of the Cavs. as I watch some of their stuff and just what they like to do and obviously like I said you could see the success they had and it worked well and um yeah it’s been great so far just being able to pick his brain watch film with him and learn as much I can said it’s been a collaborative effort too that players offering feedback how does that communication been even just watching film yeah for sure I mean that’s that’s one of the things they first said uh the whole staff um like it’s it’s a relationship ship that we have to build and uh communication is a big part of it. We’re the ones that are out there on the floor. So, we have to give feedback of what we see, what we feel when we’re out there. Um and that starts with the older guys, uh Book, Dylan, um Grayson, those guys. Obviously, Royce being around a long time in the league and uh playing on different teams and being a part of different systems, they’ve uh been through a lot. So coaches lean on those guys. We lean on them and uh just try to communiate comm communicate as much as possible uh to put a good product out on the floor. You talk about running a lot of pick and rolls and you talk about the incorporation of the slide cuts. How have you seen that kind of dynamics basing make it more easy or make the reads more easy to manipulate when you have the ball? Yeah, for sure. Um, first you got to be aggressive coming off looking to score for yourself. But, uh, in the NBA there’s a lot of times where you could catch guys just standing watching the ball and, uh, being able to have somebody on the baseline getting behind people. Um, I think you’ve seen a lot. We we generated a lot of open looks, a lot of good shots, high quality shots early on. So, uh, we just have to keep sticking with it. Uh, keeping as much we can. Um, and I think the more we’ll play together, the better we’ll get with reads, uh, in those actions and stuff like that. Have you seen the short role play making of the bigs kind of add another layer to pick a roll at? For sure. We’ve got great bigs. Um, obviously Oso is awesome with the ball in his hands in terms of passing. He’s got the little push shot uh, and he could finish at the rim, but uh, he’s a great playmaker for us. And then you add Mark, Kaman, and Nick who are a little bit bigger uh presences, can catch the ball above the rim um and put pressure on the rim kind of. Uh so it’s it’s going to be interesting. It’s going to be good for us to have that as a layer to our offense and I’m looking forward to it. Say negative.
