Ralph Sampson Recalls INFAMOUS FIGHT vs. Boston Celtics In 1986 🥊
You was part of a legendary fight. Punch the six. You punched a 61 guy when he said he said which one you can show that. Okay, it’s good. Jerry, what’s how you say his name? Jerry Sitching. Derek gets smacked in the mouth. The Celtics fans wanted blood after that though. That’s fine. And and they they try to get it. Try to get it. So we So we’re playing and I got like 15 and seven in the first quarter. Oh yeah, you killed. So like, okay. And that in the game like you’re going to beat us. You going have to beat us at home. You’re not going to beat me on my home court. So you know, I got that point and and Larry had a good game. He had a lucky shot against Rody McCrae. We should have won that game and but we’d have been like even but we didn’t do that. So I’m in the post up and I’m picking in and for Rody and Robert and Robert to come off, you know, you pin down, pick down trying to get the ball. Well, them two little [Â __Â ] would come back and hit you in the nuts as they run past you. I’m out. Bam. Danny, bam. Like, okay, [Â __Â ] One more time. And I’m jumping and dunking and running and whatever. And one too many times, you know? So, it just kind of exploded. And if the funny part, if you look at that fight now, my my at the end of the at the end of the uh bench right there, you’ll see it. My two sisters came off the stands. Oh, did they? Sitting on the side of the car. They was ready to go. Ready to throw in, bro? Yeah. Like, okay, we’re not going to take this. You know, it was, you know, it was fun. But, you know, you got to fight sometimes. Manage was known to be dirty though. He hit you in the nuts. Yeah, he’s known to be dirty, bro. And but you know, that’s who drafted me though, too. I mean, you saw him against the song the other day on some TV against Le and they, you know, go at him as hard as well. Try and Bill Walton, he was there. But yeah, that’s just kind of the way it kind of went down. It was cool to fight back then though. It wasn’t million dollar fine and suspended for the season. None of that. You played the next game. You didn’t get suspended. A Oh my god. We have been the finals. I feel you. Yeah. But so I did get So I got threats. Oh, okay. So, uh, you can ask, “Oh, they throwing him, too.” See, we’re rewind that. Who tackled you? Bill Walden, you see Kim, if you saw Came in there, don’t punch VHS. Dennis Johnson. Was that Bill Walton that that had Okay. He was He was He was trying to make the piece or he was trying to get some. Who? Bill. No, he wasn’t he wasn’t he wasn’t going to make I mean, he’s making piece. He was making peace. He didn’t want no problem. Yeah. Yeah. He didn’t want none of that. Rest in peace to Big Bill. He But he would he would hit you and do your thing with dirty little [Â __Â ] Was he good? Was he good, Bill? Yeah. He had a game. He was just strong. Yeah. And know, you know, in his older years, whatever. I like Bill. We We got a good relationship after the fact. Yeah. But, you know, didn’t want to play against him. I wanted to kill him. You know, see, that’s back when there I mean in in the league has shifted dramat drastically. Oh, nice. Oh yeah, keep it up there. That was just off the rip. Bang. Bang. Rap wasn’t playing no game. You got to love that. Quick. Look, look at this. What’s happening? You got to, you know, then you get kicked out. Yeah. That rock. Yeah. But you had to have when you came in the game, you had to have that type of fire though, right? You had to you get walked over. You get walked over, beat up, fought and then and doing it like that too much is just hard, you know, get hitting a couple times like enough is enough. But then we go to Boston. Mhm. And so cornbread Cedric, he he actually hit me to the was when I did his podcast, you know, number of years ago, but I get to Boston. Well, we get there and then I had death threats from that game. And so I brought in my two weight coaches from UVA and both of them like 300 lb and we had sheriffs behind us. We quartered one end of the of the hotel and I had them in between my room together. But then at the game as you see it in Boston they had a noose around my neck and a and a and a kind of stuffed version of me with number 50 on it and we going to hang him and and took it over the bottom of the arena. And so me and Corbett said that’s kind of strange, right? So it came from all that and like that’s just the way Boston is and you got to understand where you are and so that that and then if you see the game they want they wanted the game. Bill Fitz knew what was going on. He didn’t tell us but he gets us off the court like two minutes before the game was over because he knew the fans crowing a storm to come on the court. So he got all the starters off and then everybody else finished the game and then they get off the court.
