So it’s about AAV? And years????
The answer is no.
So it’s about AAV and years. Lol
There are few players worth winning a bidding war. Even fewer pitchers.
As a fan, I would love to see Skubal locked up long term at any cost. I don’t expect it to happen.
To rephrase, Will the tigers be a World Series contender this decade? Or will they be a farm system for the Mets
The reports of the Tigers and Tarik being 250 million apart is interesting to me. I think it makes the Tigers look bad and that’s why it’s being framed that way. But my guess is the Tigers don’t want to give term. So the 250 million would be the additional 4 or 5 years that Tarik and Borris want.
Spoiler alert: No.
Valenti has said it before but this is about the Tigers not being a serious organization. They don’t make serious offers, they don’t negotiate in good faith, and it all falls down to Harris and illitch.
To come out $250 million apart on offers is insane. I’m entirely convinced Harris is in way over his head on all levels in negotiating.
If they pay Skubal 400mil, how are they going to put a team behind him?
Sign Ranger Suarez and use the rest to sign other players. Team comes out slightly better then simply signing just Skubal.
what is stopping the Tigers from doing a ridiculous quasi-cheating contract like the Dodgers gave to Ohtani? defer the entire thing and pay him 60M/yr in 2040. I don’t get why only the Dodgers do things like that.
It’s not actually an auction though. Skubal is also deciding where he wants to live and work for the next decade and for all we know, he may have already decided that he doesn’t want to live here. We have no idea what goes into these negotiations.
The sad fact is, unless our ownership wants to risk losing money to put together a WS contender…we can’t afford Skubal.
Brewers traded away their Cy Young Winner and was able to keep competing.
It’s not my money, and I want to keep Skubal, but we need some bats too.
I think the bigger issue is going to be that if, say, the Dodgers want Skubal, there is literally no price they won’t go to to outbid anyone.
Our ownership has to remove “it’s a privilege to play here” mentality and just pay the man. I hope we can get players from the Korean and Japanese markets too.
The fact is, if the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees or Red Sox want him, they will get him. Detroit doesn’t have the money. Detroit can absolutely go all in, offering him the biggest contract in team history and it won’t be enough. So either trade him next year while you can. Or simply enjoy him next year and hope you win it before he leaves.
