Robert Horry on Joining the Spurs | “They Thought I Was a Spy!” & Earning Tim Duncan’s Trust
When I first got to San Antonio, I had people looking like, “You’re a spy.” I’m like, “What the you talking about spy? You just here to mess up our team like, “What are you talking about, Tim?” That was a whole different monster right there, dude. When talk I think it took him two years to let him let me in. Really? Yeah, man. Because he was just he’s just he’s just an island. You think about it, it’s hard when all your career you going up against this guy that has to guard you, beating you, getting championship, you beat him, getting championship, all of a sudden now he’s your teammate. I ain’t like you. So now you’re my team. do I have to let you in? And I think it just it was hard for him to let me in. And then when he finally let me in, he’s like, “Oh, okay.” You know, he’s not the I thought he was. He’s an on the court, but off the court, he’s a really nice guy. The bond with us that really happened is we just started talking video games. We all would play poker on the plane. So, he knew I love playing Texas Hold and we play poker. And that’s how we sitting there playing and talking and laughing. He’s like, “Okay.” He kind of let me in. You know, it’s just hard when you go to new teams and play with all these great players because everybody’s different. You got Dream who won’t talk much. You got Shaq who talks a lot. Then you got Tim who’s hot and cold. But you got to be who you are at the end of the day. And I think once people know that you’re a good person, they let you in. Mia.
