The Orlando Magic do not like to give timelines. And what we were kind of experiencing and what we were seeing with Jaylen Suggs and his recovery is exactly the reason why. on media day. Now, two, three weeks ago, on media day, Jeff Welman came out and said that the aim for Jaylen Suggs was to be back for opening night. There was a hope, as slim as it might be, and as slim as it might seem right now, there was a hope that he would be able to play at least by the preseason finale, which is coming up on Thursday against the New Orleans Pelicans. Now, this is rare. Like we we’ve talked a little bit about the injury stuff and and and we put it to the side and said, “Well, Jaylen will be back when he’s back. There’s there’s not much use talking about it. He’s important. We’ll talk about that in a minute.” But the Magic do not give these kinds of timelines. And now, as we’ve gotten through the preseason, as we’ve gotten closer, there were precious few signs that Suggs was going to be ready. In fact, Friday night in Philadelphia, Tim Bonteps of ESPN was at the game in Philadelphia asked Mosley directly. Where’s Jaylen Suggs at? On Friday, Jamal Mosley said Jaylen Suggs was not doing contact yet and was still perhaps weeks away. Now, again, this is why the magic don’t give timelines because things can change quickly one way or the other. At this point, then we didn’t know. We we certainly were not expecting Suggs to be back on Thursday, and I don’t think he’ll play Thursday, but now we’re getting the update that we’ve been wanting to hear. Jamal Mosley said uh when asked about Jaylen Suggs and where he’s at said that he indeed participated in contact drills and contact games during Tuesday’s practice, a very spirited practice, which we’re going to talk a little bit about in more detail coming up in our second segment. For the first time, we have confirmation that Jaylen Suggs is not simply doing his individual work or non-cont work, which he’s been doing non-cont work throughout the course of training camp. It’s not like he hasn’t been involved with the team, but he has now graduated from that important step of five on zero to three on three. Eventually, that threeon-ree will become five on five. And obviously, right now, the Magic have a lot of time. They can get a lot of practice time in. They’re not waiting on anything. Um, you know, they don’t have games to worry about, like preseason games, whatever. Who cares? Practices were what matters. And so right now there’s definitely a very good chance or a very real chance, maybe not good, but very real chance that Suggs can escalate and ramp up quickly enough to be ready for that game Wednesday against the Miami Heat. Now, there is still a process here, so get your hopes up, get excited. I I certainly think Thursday is going to be a stretch. I would not expect him to play Thursday. Uh, at the very least, you want your first five on five to be in a controlled environment. And as Jamal Mosley said, like how soon he can come back is going to depend on a few things. First, how does he feel tomorrow? How does he feel on Wednesday? Does he feel good enough to go back and do threeon-ree again? Would he be would he feel good enough to try five on five? And then how does he feel the next day? As Jaylen Suggs likes to say, it’s about stacking days now. It’s about feeling good, getting through each workout, getting through each scenario, each game, each contact, and not feeling sore, not feeling bad the next day to be able to progress to the next level. Look, we’ll probably talk to Jaylen Suggs tomorrow on Wednesday. We’ll probably talk to him either Wednesday or Thursday before the game. We’ll get an update on where he’s at. We’ll get an update about how he’s feeling. And who knows, things could escalate and ramp up quickly. Again, I would think since the Magic have the time, give him a couple five on five practices, you know, you know, get him in in in meshed in game prep and probably under some minute restriction, maybe like 24 minutes, play him in the game against the Heat. It I would say this before Tuesday’s practice, I was skeptical that Jaylen Suggs would be ready for opening night. And I was even saying like, I don’t know if he’s going to play until after the road trip, eight games into the season. Now, count me as believing he’s going to play on opening night. And if not opening night, shortly thereafter, maybe not both games of that back-toback. The Magic play the Hawks and Bulls on a backto-back in their second and third games of the season before they take that long road trip, but certainly I would think during that home stand, one of the three, one of those three games, very very possible. It feels very, very real now. Now, Jaylen Suggs is as important as any player the Magic have. You know, it we’re watching these preseason games. We’re gonna talk a little bit more about this here in a minute. So, I’m I’m gonna do do some deep teasing, but these preseason games have certainly felt off isn’t the right word, but lacks. And and that’s okay. It’s preseason. Everybody’s got getting themselves into it. Even like Jaylen Suggs last year during preseason, don’t tell me he doesn’t know how to scale himself back. He was scaled back during preseason. And the first regular season game, uh, we were talking, you know, you know, our friend Mason Williams, who was formerly with Magic on SI, was watching his first Magic game and he was like, “Jaylen Suggs is kind of a maniac, isn’t he?” And I’m like, “Yeah, yeah, he this is this is what he does.” Like, he scaled it back in the preseason. He’s starting to starting to play crazy right now. Um, that’s that’s who Jaylen Suggs is. And the Magic need that. They need that edge. They need that guy that’s going to get after players. In fact, like this is so essential to the Magic’s identity on defense. Suggs goes crazy and everybody else has to try and match the craziness. That’s not a bad thing. That’s not uh that’s not uh uh not that’s a compliment. And the Magic have missed this attitude, this swagger. Um missed this idea. And really the Magic survived without Suggs and and and his injury was honestly one of the reasons the Magic probably went one and six on that on that home stand that that felt so crushing back back in February. This is a big deal. Now obviously the Magic need to continue crossing their tees and dotting their eyes. Like you’re not just throwing him out there because he’s ready. The whole purpose of doing this surgery, of having the mosaic plasty, of addressing this cartilage issue in his left knee and the left troleia, which is the cavity your kneecap sits in, the whole purpose of addressing this now and doing it this intensively was so that he won’t have recurrences down the road. And so if there is a setback, if he has some trouble, if you bring him back too soon and he’s having repeated issues with the knee, that means he did it wrong. And if I’m the Magic, it’s more important for me to have him in March or have him for the long term because he’s had injury history and the way he plays, he’s not going to change. He’s gonna play all out. He’s going to play seemingly on the edge of recklessness. And so, you want to make sure he is good to go. If it takes a little time, it takes a little time. But undoubtedly, Tuesday is a good day. This is a good sign. This is a good news. and hope that he can play in major games. Certainly renewed, certainly feels like he has taken a major step in the right direction. And all we could say is hopefully he is sleeping easy tonight. Hopefully he is feeling better. Hopefully he can do it all again Wednesday. Do it again Thursday in shootaround. Do it again when they practice or scheduled to practice Friday. do it again Saturday and do it again ramping up to the beginning of the regular season because that’s what this is all about. The Orlando Magic are preparing themselves for the regular season. And what we’re seeing in the preeason is not exactly everything they have. Why the Magic are holding their cards close to the vest and why the Magic had their best practice in a while on Tuesday. We’ll get to that coming up here in just a moment. Like I try to when I when I break down these preseason games, I I try to acknowledge where things are going wrong and I try to say, “Oh, okay. They the Magic have turned the ball over a lot.” That’s that’s true. The Magic have turned the ball over a lot in this this preseason. Their defense has had good moments, but they’re fouling a lot, given up a lot of points. It’s this this isn’t exactly how the Magic want to play. And I always warn that while it box scores and stats can be helpful in the preseason, most of the time, ignore them. They lack context. In order to get a true understanding or idea of what is happening in these preseason games, you kind of have to watch them. You kind of have to have an have an eye on them. And if you watch these games, you’ll definitely notice that oh, like Paulo doesn’t look quite like Paulo. like he’s not dominating games. He’s not on the ball as much. They’re they’re trying different things. Fron doesn’t quite look like Fron. Again, trying different things. Desmond Bane has taken only eight three-pointers in two games. He’s one for eight. Do any of us think that’s going to stick? He’s going to take eight game. He’s going to take eight threes per game. And so, the fact of the matter is what we see publicly is valuable information. and they do tell us something. And so we do break them down. We do talk about them. We do try and understand what we’re seeing. But I think it is also very important to understand as Jamal Mosley loves to say, every year preseason is an extension of training camp. They are an extension of practices. And at this point of the year, most of the work the Magic are doing is happening behind closed doors in the Advent Health Training Center. They’re happening where we don’t see it, where we don’t exactly know. And so we’re going to talk about what the Magic have left to show in our third segment because because there’s still a lot I want to see, but I’m going to just play it straight. We don’t know a thing about this Magic team. Yes, they’re going to play faster. Yes, the pace and spacing is different. I think the Magic are spending more of their time in these preseason games saying, “Be aggressive. Attack off the dribble. Find your passing lanes. Find your cutting lanes.” Less than, “Okay, these are the plays we’re going to run or these are the looks we’re going to get when the regular season begins.” Wendo Carter is feasting and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. I think it’s because the Magic want to see, okay, where are the pockets we can get him? What where can he roll to? What is he trying to do? Because I don’t think Paulo and Fran are necessarily looking to dominate and score at this stage of the preseason. Whether it’s fair or not, I think they have a switch. I think they have left a lot on the table. But all that left on the table is happening behind closed doors. And Tuesday was a practice that seemed to hint at some of these things that are left on the table. Jamal Mosley called it probably the most competitive and intense practice they have had since he got to Orlando, since he arrived in Orlando. Jonathan Isaac called it a really good practice. The Magic essentially played a game. They they held scrimmages. They got up and down. They played they played games and treated Tuesday like a game practice. So for saying, “Oh, the Magic played only four preseason games.” They’re playing in game-like conditions throughout these practices. And and the Magic have had some heavy practices. It’s not the first time they’ve had a practice like this. It’s just the first time players have said, “No, this was a iron sharpens iron practice.” As as Jamal Mosley put it, iron sharpens iron, and sometimes that iron gets hot. And that’s a good thing. We want guys to be competitive. We want guys to get after each other a little bit, to have that swagger and all that. And that appears to be the kind of practice the Magic had on Tuesday. It’s also from everything I’ve heard from talking to people who’ve watched a little bit of these practices, there is a lot that’s going on in the practice court that is not showing up in the games yet. And that is probably intentional. I would argue to all of you and and I know this isn’t fair and we can only analyze what we see that practices right now are far more important than anything we see in the preseason games. I would rather players go harder in practice than go too hard in these preseason games where everyone’s kind of working on different things. Like the whole thing and the preseason games and three preseason games of Magic have played the whole thing hasn’t quite come together yet. like we can see the different strands. We can see maybe the things that that the Magic are trying to put out like they’re they’re they’re throwing fishing lines out there just kind of seeing what they can catch, seeing what happens, but we haven’t seen the whole thing come together in a net. I think that fishing analogy works. I’ve only really seen Kota. Um and then like the perfect storm. Um the Magic aren’t a complete picture in these preseason games, but in practice they are. In practice, they are painting the entire picture. They’re they’re looking at the entire they’re they’re they’re drawing those strings together and tying it tying all those loose ends. That’s what’s happening in practice. And so a practice like Tuesday where the team does get into it, where the team does play with that intensity, where the team does feel like, oh no, we got better because we got after each other. That’s the kind of practice the Magic need right now. That’s the kind of practice where they do get better and that’s the kind of practice where we will see those results once the regular season begins. I know that is a frustrating thing to hear as a fan. Um, and look, the Magic are winning these preseason games. Uh, their starters have a positive plus minus. The bench has mostly recovered the plus minus from that from that game against the Miami Heat in San Juan, the opening preseason game. A, as I’ve always said, my goal in the preseason is to look better every single game. I would say the fouling has not quite rounded into the shape I’d like it to round into. I would say the turnovers have been a little bit hit or miss, but I would also say I have seen more good moments from the entire roster, not just the starters or the bench players, but the entire roster. I have seen longer stretches of good moments from this team each game. I do think the Magic have accomplished a lot this preseason in these preseason games specifically. They have gotten better as the season has progressed and I think this is a veteran team that knows they have a lot on the line, a lot they can do. They believe they believe they are getting better. They believe that they can turn that switch on when the games count and they are coming together behind closed doors more than they are in front of us. So again, we got one preseason game left. We will see what the Magic look like then. And that’s what I want to talk about to close today’s show is what do the Magic have left to show us? We’ll talk I want to talk a little about what we want to see as the Magic prepare for their final public display before the season begins. We’ll get to that coming up here in just a moment. But first, today’s episode of Lockdown Magic is brought to our friends over at FanDuel. NFL season is also here and FanDuel has an offer you do not want to miss. The Magic are set at 50 and a half. They have who’s going to win divisions, who’s going to win the NBA Cup, coach of the year. You can even bet on opening night lines. The Magic favored by eight and a half over the Miami Heat the last time I checked. I don’t know if that’s going to change very much, but eight and a half is a pretty heavy line to start the season considering the Heat have struggled so much. match could look pretty good all things considered. Whether you’re a casual fan or love diving into the stats, FanDuel makes the game day experience so much better. Just don’t bet on preseason games. Paulo is against betting on preseason games. Check it out today again at fanuel.com. So, what is what is left to see? What is remaining on the table for the Orlando Magic? Again, if so much of this is going to be behind closed doors, really, this is just selfishness on my part. Uh because I want to watch this team play. Like again, I it’s not just that I cover this team. It’s it’s I want to actually see how this thing is going to work. I would even I would love to just get a glimpse of a practice like Tuesday’s just so I have a better idea of what I should be watching for and what this team’s going to look like. But it’ll all be debuted next week in the opener against Miami. And yes, there will still be hiccups. There will still be things to work through. There will still be ways for them to improve. But we are all eagerly anticipating the start of the season. The big thing that I think we need to see on Thursday and and and it does appear like the Magic are going to go into the game this way. We need to see this team play somewhat at full strength. Um, you know, I don’t want to say exact, you know, I’m not expecting like a full rotation. I’m not expecting like, you know, full lineups through the third quarter, but we need to see Paulo Fran and Dez play together. um they have played only one game together against the Philadelphia 76ers. They played mostly well in that game. Like I I think there were good things, but the more minutes those that trio gets on the floor together, the better. And it doesn’t have to look like it’s going to look in the regular season yet. It’s more about passing, understanding spacing, understanding how to play off each other. Even if you’re driving not to score, it’s just being on the floor together, knowing where your spots are, and then executing it and getting comfortable playing off of each other. Like we’re seeing Paulo set more screens in these preseason games. I think we’ve seen him in in the regular season because he’s had to be on the ball so much. I am really excited for the prospect of Paulo Vancero as a roller. I I want him to get easier shots and using him as a pick and roll player or pick and pop player is a great way to get him some more easier shots and and Desmond Bane and eventually Jaylen Suggs and Taius Jones allow you to do that. you have more offensive minded players. And I think that’s been one of the big takeaways in the preseason is that even if Paulo and Fron are kind of coasting and taking it easy, the Magic are the Magic have a lot more players who can attack off the dribble. And again, I think that’s been a major emphasis in this preseason is just attack. Doesn’t matter if you turn it over. Doesn’t matter if it’s a bad shot. Doesn’t matter if he gets stuck. Just attack. Be aggressive. And they can re that back in in practices. They can rein that back in when the games count. So again, I I think the first big thing is we just got to see these guys play together. That’s such a big thing for them to show. Otherwise, like again, part of not having all those guys on the floor together has been we haven’t really seen this team’s full rotation. We talked a lot about Jed Howard and how impressive he’s looked and he’s taken advantage of the injuries and of the Magic not being at full strength, but we because the Magic have played so few preseason games and that’s neither good nor bad. Again, they do a lot of the work in practice. I think they’re they’re comfortable with their process here. Um, but because they play so few preseason games, they sit guys for some of these games. We haven’t seen this team kind of function the way they’re going to function during the regular season. We haven’t seen those lineups and rotations. Like again, Jed Howard has taken advantage of his time. I want to give him all the credit in the world for that. But he’s playing Tristan Dilva’s minutes. you know, I want to see Tristan in those lineups with that starting group a little bit more functionally, a little bit more the way that we’re expecting to see them. And so really what the Magic have left to show this preseason is just comfort. Just being on the floor together and continuing to evolve this thing. That’s that’s the issue. We haven’t seen an evolution because everything’s been so stilted. No Fron in the first game. They all play in the second game. No Paulo, no Dez. I I want to see this group together. Like that’s that’s such that that that’s the thing. And again, regardless of the context, just them playing together is a is an important thing. Frankly though, like besides like just reigning in turnovers, just playing with a little bit more precision. It’s not fouling. Um defense has been good, but has succumb to fouling, which is going to be a problem for the team, which it always is. that’s how they play. The Magic just need to fine-tune everything. Um, again, I’m confident they will. I’m confident the mistakes they’re making are aggressive mistakes or timing mistakes that they’ll continue to work on as they play more and as they focus more and care more about these games, which maybe that’s a problem that that’s a switch you can flip, but it’s the preseason. So, again, like it’s the same goal as I’ve always talked about with these games. It’s about getting better every day. getting better every game, looking more ready every game. And again, I would say generally the Magic have done that. I I have been impressed with how the Magic have looked, and I know there’s a lot that they’re holding back in the tape. I know there’s a lot more they’re going to do, but they got to show it. And I think I don’t think Thursday is necessarily a dress rehearsal, but Thursday needs to look like they’re on the precipice. like these things that we’ve talked about that they’ve struggled with, the fouling, the turnovers, you know, the just consistency, just longer stretches of consistency. That’s what we need to see on Thursday. And again, it’s just about getting on the court and playing. That’s what the Magic did Tuesday. Everyone seemed excited about what they did what they did behind closed doors. We’ll see what it looks like when they actually take the floor for the first time on Wednesday. We got one more preseason game before that. But that’s going to do it for me today. I want to thank you all again for listening to today’s episode of Locked On Magic. Jalen Suggs took a giant leap toward his return as he participated in contact 3-on-3 drills at practice Tuesday. Could he make his mark and return for opening night next week?

This is certainly good news after it seemed like Suggs was still struggling to take this important step and be ready for the season. It is a good sign as the Magic prepare for their final week before the season starts.

The Magic are indeed deep in preparations. Their practice Tuesday was one of the best they have had all camp. The competition increased as they played more. The games they play behind closed doors might be more important than their preseason games right now.
